I don\'t know the falafel guy from dead shows, but I know the heady wolfmans burritos from breakfast show parking lots

So listening to the Dead show broadcast and during setbreak they had a "commercial" from the lot and The Falafel Guy got a plug!
If you spent any time on Dead Lot you know the Falafel Guy.
Hilarious!
Pretty Sweet 1st set.
2nd coming up!

warren has really transformed his sound more to that of the late jerry garcia

what a ****

:wah:

I haven\'t heard him in a few years, but I was just saying last night that I felt he was a one trick pony, and for better or worse really put the Warren stamp on everything he played.

Quote from: leith;225530

Warren seems to be making more of a conscious effort to play within the GD framework and less afraid of playing more true to Jerry\'s sound.

For me Warren has typically fallen back on his ABB style jamming with The Dead which is very noticeable and just sounds like ABB covering GD.

I only noticed that in small places and he pretty much took care of it quickly playing much more with the rest of the band than he did before.

This is the key for me. I know what the Core 4 bring when they are happy together and Jeff is always on point so if Warren is going to keep this up, some really really killer music is going to happen.

Warren is reminding all the haters he really is a Bad Ass on guitar.

i knew i had read somewhere that someone else noticed his new style. shoulda known it was you leith.

im also certain his wife stef scamardo pointed it out on sirius 17 about a million times whenever they play songs from the new tour.

normally i would totally agree, but listening to a couple songs from this new tour, i hear him doing the jerry-pulloff a lot, using the subtle envelope filter, and really being more laid back than the straight up rock he always does. i actually couldn\'t tell it was him at first... usually you can tell it\'s warren right away.

Yeah, yeah. Exactly.

I\'m really curious to go home and listen to these shows now.  Sounds like a serious case of an old dog learning some new tricks. Thanks for pointing this out.

Interesting. Maybe I\'ll hitch a ride to Philly this weekend.

not being much of a deadhead, my opinion is the second set was superior of the two, and the drums section stole the show- it got dark and dirty in there for a minute!!

 Who the **** do these guys think they are? Was thinking of The Forum but now seeing the prices, **** no!

If the last couple gigs they have done is any indication it will most likely go down like this:
Phil wanting to sing the wrong songs.
Bob **** up the lyrical meter of his own best songs.
Bill trying to keep a steady beat over Mickey\'s wandering drum thumping.
Warren playing every tune as a blues number and playing over everyone while Chimenti just tries to keep a cohesive melody amongst the madness.

I mean if they were serious about performing Grateful Dead songs in the framework most of us are familiar with I would be curious.

So after listening to the Roseland Ballroom set I am pretty excited to hear this band play GD tunes.

Phil still can\'t sing a lick and they still screw up the lyrics to UJB but Bob seems to be remembering how his songs are sung, The Rhythm Devils are in sync, and Warren seems to be making more of a conscious effort to play within the GD framework and less afraid of playing more true to Jerry\'s sound.

For me Warren has typically fallen back on his ABB style jamming with The Dead which is very noticeable and just sounds like ABB covering GD.

Cassidy is a stellar example of what this band can do.

It\'ll never be the GD but it may be the closest they\'ve come except for a very few exceptions.

I have a hypothetical for everyone, feel free to tackle it:

It is January 2029.  You are 20 years older than you are today.  Trey is dead.  A guitar player that you like (it can even be Tim) joins Page, Fishman, and Mike, and they tour playing Phish songs.  All seats are $150 each.  Do you go?

Depends on what the inflation over time is... if thats the standard price for a band doing reuinon tours at that point in time... I\'d consider it. As far as ticket prices in the present... Probably not.

I ended up getting the $68 dollar seats for the show @ the XL Center in Hartford.  Come to find out the floor, lower level and first half of the second level were all $98 seats.  My seats are SEC 214 (1/2 way back from the stage) and are in row AA!?!? Thats were the cheap seats start... I think it only goes as high as GG if I remeber.  That\'s rediculous but I\'m there to listen... its not like its a killer light show or anything I guess.

not to rain on your parade but my understanding was that all less expensive seats this tour are obstructed view. I hope for your sake I am wrong but that is my understanding. Like behind the stage.
I dont think they are... section 214 is in the like mid court... just up high. So unless they\'ve had to put up some pillars to hold the place up (which it probably needs) I think I should be ok... either way, the ticket prices are pretty bunk.

Also- in 1995 I paid $35 to see GD.  With 5% annual inflation (more than the actual) that would put current tix at $66.  Of course, in the 1995 you still had JG, and Bob Dylan opening.

$66 would only bring you up to 2008, in 2009 that 5% brings it up to just shy of $70.  That being said.  There\'s all sorts of new fees tacked on besides the ticketmaster fee.  I just went to ticketmaster to see what fees I would incur.  I chose Steve Winwood (a similar degree artist)

Ticket - $60.00
Ticketmaster Convenience Charge - $10.50
Order Processing Fee - $3.65
Standard Mail Delivery - $4.00

Total cost for one ticket - $78.15 (23% of that price fees) / that is what I\'d be really upset at.

I\'d like to applaud everyone in this thread who\'s cutting back or not going at all based on these prices. If enough people stand up maybe it\'ll teach these greedy **** a lesson.

Blondie and I were stoked to go until we saw this.  She called me with the news and after a moment of stunned silence we agreed that was absurd. I\'ve said it before, I\'m done overpaying for washed up nostaglia acts. The Rolling Stones soaked me back in 1998 for $75 a pop for a poorly played version of Hot Rocks.  Lesson learned.

For those prices you can go to a festival and spend all day/weekend hearing up and coming bands in their primes.

Also- in 1995 I paid $35 to see GD.  With 5% annual inflation (more than the actual) that would put current tix at $66.  Of course, in the 1995 you still had JG, and Bob Dylan opening.

wtf are they thinking charging that much esp considering they have to compete with the phish?

I think that there are two distinct fans out there with some cross-over.  Both tours are going to be financially successful regardless of the ticket prices.  Once could make a case that Phish is overcharging at $50+ for lawn seats, but if you\'re a fan and you want to go, you really can\'t complaign.  I won\'t be catching either tour (Dead - Prices / Phish - Venues :thumbsdow), but I\'ll definitely listen to a couple shows from each tour.

I mean if they were serious about performing Grateful Dead songs in the framework most of us are familiar with I would be curious.

i dont like warren really. but i love warren and jimmy together. and i do infact like some of the songs they have warren sing. some brent tunes or some pigpen maybe.  there is a brief interview in the new relix that hints towards them bringing back some old pigpen stuff, i would love that

Hell yes I\'ll be at a number of these shows. Herring would be the sickest move ever but I know Warren is gonna be "the man"
If there is a god in heaven he will never again allow Joan Osbourn or any other chic pop star to front this band vocally. I saw it at the Meadows and I wanted to puke all over her brother (who was sitting next to me)

I don\'t mind Warren w/ ABB, but not the Dead.  much rather see them tour w/ Jimmy Herring, I don\'t even mind listening to Phil sing compared to Warren soulshinin\' up a dead set.
AGREED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Look I love Phil as much as the next guy but Please NO. He cannot sing, has never been able to sing period.

Sure Unbroken Chain is a great song and Phil used to be able to sing it but not anymore. That guy should simply stick to Bass now.

His singing at vibes 2008 was the worst i have heard him

its not like i\'d want to hear him, just compared to the alternative of warren, i could take it.  personally, have bobby sing all the bobby tunes, add barraco on keys and vocals and get joan back and have her sing too.  done deal, w/ jimmy on geetar of course.

hell ya now that would be sick

I\'d rather get fitshaced at a breakfast show for that kind of money.

word.

19 show run and they haven\'t played together for good deal of time.

What would you pay to go to Hampton ?

You could always mail order and not deal with the fees.

I think this is good for Phish actually. [-]Dead on tour at same time as hampton[/-]. Will force folks to make a decision "one way or the other....."

whoops. Hampton is in March

I have never found him to be a tasteful guitar player and I don\'t enjoy his tone either. I have no personal beef with the guy.

They def could have found someone more appropriate to fill "that spot" but I\'ll give the early tapes a listen before I decide if I\'m going to Worcester or not.
