Yahooo I get to work a Dead show!!! I just found out that the Dead was playing Coors Amp. one of the venues I happen to work. Man this is so cool. Look for a Leith\'s eye view of a Dead show backstage sometime in July.

Hey I feel ya man. I was so disappointed that they never used Rob to the full extent that Phil does in the quintet. I really have to come clean w/ ya though, I am living in the past and that is why I continue to support these guys. When I was 16 I lived on the road following them and I really have never gotten rid of the wanderlust. That is one of the reasons I am so into the newer groups such as PB. New experiences around every corner. GD saved my life and that is no joke. I felt very betrayed when The Boyz decided to not go on directly after JG\'s death, when they finally decided that was stupid and they should play i told myself I would not participate as I could not handle what they were giving me. I saw some of the bs they tried to palm off on us, but until last yr\'s getaway i was not convinced they actually wanted this beast to live. After NYE I was convinced this could still work. I have seen somewhere in the vicinity of 200 GD shows and 75-80 JGB shows and this is the closest I have gotten to recapturing the GD spirit that caused me to run away from home oh so many years ago. I hope you find your way back on the Bus Duane. The seat next to mine is open Brother.

don\'t get me wrong,....i love warren and once hoped he would be the replacement...i just have a bad taste about this....rob in particular
-
I totally agree about Phil and his singing . He should stick to the 2-3 songs he can sing well. As for Billy I have personally talked to him and he really just wanted to play w/ his friends again. Do not get me started on that damn rapper that replaced Mickey. As for Bob, we all know he lives to be a rock star(remember the shorts and Izod\'s?) so I will not get into him. Have you heard the past Warfield show ? You can get it for FREE. I suggest if you have doubts to listen to it. Warren singing helps out in soooooooooo many ways it is ridiculous. I am very biased when it comes to these guys. Up until the "reconciliation" I was one of the "bent" ones also, but since they have actually started to invest some time into The Dead I have become a believer again. IT WILL NEVER BE THE SAME AS W/ JG but THE SONG IS STILL THERE AND I WANT TO HELP SING IT W/ THEM. This past NYE w/ The Dead was the same as most NYE\'s I had w/ GD. The 30th ROCKED and NYE was a clusterfuck. AHHHH some things do not change. I pray you change your mind as the Boyz still have some magic in them.

jerr\'s dead..oh that\'s different i didn\'t know.....as for living in the past....i spend lot\'s of my time following moe and pb while still seeing panic,umphrey\'s,nmas,dbb and others whenever i can...the grateful dead will always be my favorite band but i gave up living in the past a long time ago...no i just live in the past weekend...oh and the band has done just about everything BUT move on...all they did was bicker until the money began to run out....bobby loves to tour as evidenced by ratdog and phil gave us all something special with plq....but they wouldn\'t even speak to each other until jill lesh looked at the bank account...mickey\'s gotten all holier than thou and billy finally decided to comeback...why..oh yeah...to make some money...nothing wrong with that but fill the band out with bandmates...not hired guns who cain\'t make the next practice session... i won\'t pay for practice when there are so many other good games to go see....and don\'t forget...phil cain\'t sing...all those times we chanted "let phil sing"...we didn\'t think he would take us ser...on the side leith..i normally really enjoy your posts and look forward to meeting you someday when you come to staven for some real pizza....duane

Letting Rob go makes perfect sense when you look @ what the line-up is now. Rob has no problem w/ being out of the Dead. He has accepted that he was a cog in a larger wheel and so should everyone else.( Read the interview w/ him @ Philzone.com) Rob never was a major vocal factor anyway and that was crazy, but there was a reason for this too( see above interview ). Anyone who thinks this is about the $$$ seems to just want to live in the past and this is a good excuse for them too. Fine let them. This band will never be as huge as it once was and they know it thus Ratdog and other side projects get alot of attention instead of The Dead being the major priority. I will go see this Band as it rocks. I know what I like and having heard this band I like it. Warren provides the rudder this ship needs. Jimmy does not have the ability to lead a band as well as Warren and this is very very evident in the Warfield show. As far as Jerry not standing for this of course he wouldn\'t he\'s DEAD so let\'s move on as the Band has and just revel in his memory.
-
those of you who know me,know how i feel about the dead....hiring warren is all about the money..their not selling tix like before....touring w/the allmans just helps make that work....wait till we see the ticket prices...letting rob go was just plain crazy....like a breath of fresh air he brought songs back to life in plq that i thought were gone...they let him go so phil can sing?....so bob can say someone in his band got in...also i\'m sick of paying big money for their practice sessions...but this will sell tickets......jerry wouldn\'t stand for this...unless he just got a knew stash
-
Had to happen sometime but that\'s OK Freddie I\'ll buy u a guinness in Colo. this summer anyway.
-
leith,i gotta agree with ya buddie, although i hate to do it...
-
OK I have gotten first hand reports from the Warfield show and have listened to it at least 3 times and the consensus is..........
Warren w/ The Dead is a SUCCESS!!! So far.
Hearing Terrapin w/o Phil croaking lead was wonderful. Built to Last, Just a Little Lite, STELLA BLUE and a few other songs benefitted from having Warren there. Jams not so lost, more cohesive, after a couple shows this band is gonna ROCK!!!!!
Can not wait for Red Rocks TD/ABB CO-BILL tenetively scheduled for end of June.
-
Freddie you get your chance this Summer to pit ABB vs The Dead.
As for Adrian, I do not count robots so I excluded him and his prototype Fishman.
-
oh yea i forgot to mention..the best rythm section is a tossup between marc quiniones, butch trucks and jaimoe,or adrian the animal tramantano...
-
They are a close close second IMO. I realize this is a moot point w/ you. I just wanted to make the point that JG may have been a LARGE part of the GD but there were 4 other guys on that journey w/ him and a 5th(keyboardist) along for the ride.
So what ever those 4 want to do now is all icing though @ times it\'s spoiled frosting. Some things never change.

The best rythym section in all of rock & roll? You MUST be talking about Dave Schools, Todd Nance, & Sunny Ortiz! They redefine the term rythym section!

I still think the lack of a singer who sounds like Jerry is the real problem - Kimock is a good guitarist, Herring is good, and so is Warren (but Derek Trucks would be better). The best choice might actually be Steve Sweeny from ekoostik hookah - they did a sick China Rider with Bob Weir sitting in at one of the hookahvilles a few years ago. There are plenty of guitarists who can fill the void - if the rest of the band would allow them to really go off instead of always reigning them in. But it seems like The Dead never even attempted to find someone to replace Jerry\'s vocal part. Having Mickey rap his part is like replacing Jerry\'s guitar with a shoebox with rubber band stretched across it. I\'ll still go see them, but I wish they would get one more singer.

i love the dead, the grateful dead, the jgb, phil and friends, ratdog, shakedown, dark star orchestra, jazz is dead.......its all good music to me.phil cant sing but who cares.at least they didnt just quit after jerry died.
-
It goes back to when Vince fell apart after JG\'s death. If you remember after JG died Bob invited Vince to join Ratdog. All was glorious for awhile.
What happened is basically one night Bob found Vince on the tour bus just WRECKED( on what is debateable). Bob got pissed @ Vince and fired him on the spot. Kicked him off the bus and that is that. Vince says things are better between them now but do not look for Vince to play w/ TD as he really was JG\'s choice for the Hot Seat.

Playin\' in the Band
Sugar Magnolia

Just a few GD songs that are HUGE. Loved JG but the Dead has always been a communal effort by all in the Band.
The edit is for WAH

What do you mean that Bob will not forgive Vince? Was there a fight or something? Fill me in...

The Dead should hang it up. Every show I have seen post JG has absolutely sucked WHEN compared to the real thing. As much as I used to love the Grateful Dead, since Jerry\'s death I have realized that I was really a Jerry fan all along, not a GD fan. It really hurts my ears to hear all of their songs butchered when thay are played with out him. If you never saw GD, perhaps the Dead is better than nothing, but to many of us who used to see GD shows, the current incarnation sounds like a cheap, second rate, highschool, cover band. After the last Phil & Friends show I saw, I vowed to never waste my money again. Just my opinion.
-
OK I have just about finished reading all the entries in the new Jambands book by Dean Budnick and have come to this conclusion.
THE DEAD CAN DO WHATEVER THE **** THEY WANT.
I will support their efforts to keep going post JG no matter how crazy it seems to me @ times. They have influenced so many bands that I now enjoy so much that I feel whatever they want to do is fine w/ me.
They could hang it up (which many have suggested) but they continue to search for that elusive perfect night of music and keep writing new songs(which many do not like). It has been just about 40 years that these guys have been hanging out making music.
I saw the Grateful Dead hundreds of times, for those that did not my condolences but this is not them. IT IS HOWEVER A TRUE CONTINUATION OF THAT BAND. The Core 4 are all I really care to see on stage anyway. I have seen the solo bands and the feeble attempts(the ones sans either Phil or Bill) in TOO, but this is the band I have wanted since Jerry died. Just get a competent guitarist that would not sully the memory of JG that\'s all I have ever wanted(that and Vince baby on keys but Bobby just will not forgive him. It really sux). I finally got that in Jimmy and it seemed things were back on track(in my mind) now another shake-up but as I have now stated I\'M COOL W/ IT.
Except for Mickey\'s rapping that is just downright AWFUL!!!!
-
I like Warren H., but the Dead needed a singer, not another guitarist. When I saw them in Atlanta, Mickey Hart RAPPED Fire on the Mountain, and suddenly I was really wishing Jerry was there - I would rather hear Jerry stumble through the lyrics of Fire on the Mountain, forgetting half the verses like he usually did, than hear Mickey rap the freaking lyrics. The Dead needs a male lead singer who can sound like Jerry, or they need to let Rob actually sing, like you guys were suggesting. And no, they did not sell out the Atlanta show. But I will still come out to see them this summer anyway. We may criticise them, but I know most of us are loyal Dead fans who will at least see them when they come to our home towns.
-
Goddam that is just too much guitar... three of them: WHAT?
Warren is getting to be a little much nowadays. He\'s everywhere. It\'s like ENOUGH already. The guy is amazing but too much is sometimes too much.
Talk about a scenester....
This makes me want to see NO dead at all, but that\'s no different than before. :)
-
leith,i think you meant Dead/No
-
Yep that is the big one right there. I have heard they are planning @ least 10 dates Dead/ABB and is a big reason Warren is w/ The Dead right now.
Dead/YES would be quite hilarious though. There would not be enough psychedelics for such a show.
-
nope.abb
-
Back to the real rumor....Is the Dead touring with Yes this summer???
-
I refuse to see the Dead with Warren...I though for once I can go see a band that actually sounds like the dead.
-
They should all just retire and be happy. None of this Bob Dylan/George Forman shoulda-hung-it-up-long-ago stuff. They should make guest appearances with bands like PB and Umphrey\'s to help these bands get some hype.
-
This band could not sell out NYE in their backyard. From what I hear Rob was dissatisfied over his lack of contribution. This mainly came from Bobby as he likes singing JG\'s songs. Phil knows what he has in Rob so I do not think this will affect PL&F as a matter of fact Rob has said he\'s available for PL&F. I do not think this was done as an attendence thing. They just need a guitar player who will take charge. Warren is known for this Jimmy not so much, but the boyz are cognizant of the fan\'s desires for stability so Jimmy is staying.
-
Just thinking about his after reading aj\'s post.
Do you suppose that Warren was added to help attendance ?
I might not be remembering correctly but weren\'t only a few of the Dead\'s East coast dates sellouts?
I remember hearing that they weren\'t selling out shows
-
they never used rob\'s voice or playing to its full potential having rotating keyboard players i thought was kinda dumb. they also never let rob sing. i bet he knows all the words and doesn\'t flub em like bobby did in hartford last summer. joan i can understand getting rid of. but rob is a bad move for more southern rock of warren. how many freaking bands does this guy have to play with?
also do you think this will be bad for Phil and Friends w. rob having some ill will towards phil?!
-
I agree. I was upset at the rumour and was hoping it wasn\'t true then I heard the announcement. Hope for the best; remember the earlier incarnation of The Other Ones had three guitarists: Kimock, Karan, and Weir. But I think for the Dead, who\'s summer sound was beautifully clear, three guitarists will clutter it up greatly. Now, maybe the Warfield gig will sound so bad they will dump Warren for the summer tour. Poor Rob.
-
Well they have only "announced" a summer tour. Good sources in SF inform me that this is the expected Summer line-up unless something big happens to change it. Look for Dead/ABB tour for a few shows this is being discussed.
-
Is this Offical now?
-
Anyone else annoyed that The Dead have decided to ax Rob and Joan and add a third guitar in Warren Haynes ?
Just when I thought these guys had gotten some sense into their collective head they pull this. Underuse a great JG vocalist in Rob and get rid of the best singer in the band in Joan ?
This band could not even play Wheel OR Truckin\' @ NYE. Now adding another rogue guitarist is gonna fix things?
I THINK NOT. This is the Dead not the ABB or PL&F. Sure Jimmy and Warren play well together but Bob will be lost in this mess (anyone remember Bob w/ Phish and that was just Trey) OMG LOL. I like PL&F but it always ends up reminding me of what ABB sounds like playing GD songs. I can not see how this will be any different. I will be interested in what comes of this since this seems to be the line-up for Summer tour.
Well I guess I don\'t have to save up for Summer Tour unless PB decides to rock the Nation!!!
