I\'m not a DMB hater per se, but he\'s an artist that I actually prefer studio to live. I saw him in Jersey around the time Crash came out and he bored the hell out of me. I enjoy jam music for the most part, but when you play the same riff over and over and over for 15 minutes, I want to drill a hole in my head.

If we are talking about side projects now how come no one has mentioned Oysterhead?
yea, that or oysterhead would probably be my fave.
no wait, dave matthews with trey
Oysterhead is great.
Why are there so many dave haters here?

Here\'s another fun one: favorite phish side project.
For me, it\'s Trey/Mike with the Benevento/Russo Duo
ahh yes... was that G.R.A.B.? i was at the meadows show in \'06, and it was FANTASTIC!!!
also am a HUGE fan of mike gordon/leo kottke. "clone" pretty much changed my life.
leo has been owning my face as of late
check out "1 guitar, no vocals" if you haven\'t already. the first trsck is beautiful. the whole thing is beautiful
is that just leo alone?

the first big venue TAB summer tour circa 2001 was the bomb. I did a little north east run, camden, great woods, etc and it was an absolute blast every single night. no trey band or phish side project ever came close to that tour in my mind. the lot scene was almost just as good as phish and the shows and the music was new and exciting and very rockin. I got some weird VIP ticket in the lot at great woods and none of the security guards seemed to know what it was but it looked legit so they let me back stage before the show and I chilled with trey and Jen. When show time came they wouldn\'t let me stand on the side of the stage but I got to roam free in the front row pit area and some of friends snuck down and found me and we ate a bunch of euro dollars and raged out to an amazing preformance. hahahha. good times.
also the very first GRAB show stands out in my mind. It was at bonnaroo, late night....around 2 or 3 am....it was booked as just a duo show but as we showed up (spun cookies) we noticed there was a really electric buzz in the air. then we saw trey\'s rig and figured it out. sure enough it was the a full GRAB show. and they really ripped it! I saw a bunch of other GRAB shows that year but none really topped that first one in my mind. they were all kinda less experimental and repetitive and less energized after that magical surprise first appearance.

ive never really heard many of the side projects from pre-hiatus, but i agree that collaboration was a very cool thing

Just doing studio albums and am not including \'Phish\' aka: \'The White Tape\', or \'The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday\', or \'The Siket Disc\'.
1. Rift
2. Junta
3. A Picture of Nectar
4. Lawn Boy
5. Hoist
6. Billy Breathes
7. Farmhouse
8. The Story of the Ghost
9. Round Room
10. Undermind
pretty much...
Ill go with that because I dont care enough to dissect them further song by song
-
I think Undermind is a great album
Round Room on the other hand I think is the worst album they have put together. hands down.
:that:

See - I guess that\'s where I differ. I can pop in Duece or RR or the first album and listen to it from start to finish. With Phish and the Dead, I find myself skipping through tracks to get to something I want to hear. I rarely do that with live shows; the exception would be the Dead - anytime I hear West LA Fadeaway, I can\'t hit the next button fast enough.
-
Am I the only one who doesn\'t listen to Phish studio albums; I only listen to live shows. I\'m pretty much the same way with the Grateful Dead also.
i am the same way. for every 1 studio song i listen to, i probably listen to 250 live songs. i dont own any studio phish albums, however i have over 200 live shows.
Dude you are missing out. Phish , unlike almost every other "jamband", has consistently put together solid, if not totally amazing albums (with only a couple exceptions).
Billy Breathes
Nectar
Rift
Ghost
Farmhouse
Lawn Boy
Hoist
Junta
Round Room
Undermind
not counting live ones, "b-sides", Trey\'s college projects, etc

They rarely play tracks off Blues for Allah or Mars Hotel.
Also, the first release of AxomoxomoxA (yes there were two) has some really cool early electronic music on it (it was totally ruined in the second release, which the CD is based off of).

Pebbles and Marbles
Walls of the Cave
Scents and Subtle Sounds
A Song I Heard the Ocean Sing
Two Versions of Me
Mock Song
= all quality

i don\'t listen to them often, but when i first started listening to phish i just bought their albums like i do with all other bands. at first i didn\'t know about concerts. i was just like "well, live albums usually don\'t have as good sound quality." then you start to realize what live music is all about.
same with the dead. first i was like American Beauty> Workingmans Dead> Terrapin Station. then i got Europe 72 and realized it was all about the live ****.
that said, studio albums are a totally different experience. I love popping in PB or Deuce every once in a while. gotta support the artists

My top 5
1. Junta (to this day, i still get this stupid grin on my face when i hear Esther)
2. Rift
3. Billy Breathes
4. A Picture of Nectar
5. Hoist

Billy Breathes > Picture of Nectar> Rift > Ghost > Farmhouse
Those are the only ones I own, so therefore the only ones I will rank.
I like alot of the songs off Round Room (Walls of the Cave, Waves, Peables and Marbles, Seven Below) so maybe that should get put on their too.
-
i like hoist a lot, just not better than any of their other albums. as for RR and Undermind, i like them better than Micheal Jackson\'s last albums, but they don\'t touch Boyz II Men: II
that isn\'t to say that they are terrible, i just wouldn\'t pop them in to listen to. I get my fix for that type of music from other bands. Anyone who saw phish since RR came out probably knows that any songs from RR or Undermind usually diluted the energy of the show, or at least the set.
i do really like Grind and Mexican Cousin.

When I See The Connection..
-
absolutely, but thats why i really like it.... its new, its different, its a change of pace for phish. i like to see evolution in bands, not just releasing the same type of music over and over....
-
i dont really like undermind. the songs are pop. oops, i meant poop.
-
haven\'t given undermind a spin until very recently (like, this week) and its pretty damn good!
-
as much as round room was underproduced and raw, I *love* undermind because of how great the production value is on it.
-
truthfully, i dug a bunch of shiz off round room, it was all just very underproduced
i liked round room too, i actually used to skip over the actual title track however because i just can\'t stand it. lol. i agree, its a raw album but its got some great tunes.

Rift> Junta> Lawn Boy> PON> Ghost> Billy> Hoist> Farmhouse> all that other BS
i guess that makes me a taint
That makes two of us. Only thing I would change is put PON after Billy\'s. Everything beyond that is garbage in my book.

story of the ghost is my favorite phish album.

-
gotta like \'97 kids
-
yea yea. isn\'t Story of a Ghost your favorite phish album?
thats dick, its just funny to me because the kid i\'m living with is the same way. all about the Ghost.
he also doesn\'t dig Ep 3, but you\'re cooler than him, don\'t worry
:)
Ghost and Billy
I\'m kinda surprised you remember something like that.
