Utica syn is now on myspace page! add it your profile!
-
the utica syn just perfectly exemplifies the new sound the band has been crafting and channeling over the last year.
They are evolving and really starting to gel now and just taking it to higher musical dimensions.
Their new sound is exactly this type of grand, euphoric, expansive, free flowing, trancey yet not untzy, epic, melodic, harmonic, blissfull, serness.
I noticed it first in river st, then ithaca then canton and especially at sterling. It stood out instantly because I had never heard or seen the band jam on this level in this way. Jams like this are simply on a whole nother level than anything this band ever threw down prior to summer \'07. They can still own your face with a straight up shred fest, or good old rock and roll, or untz out a queeb, or porno funk it up with the best of them and all the dozen or so other great styles they are fluent in but THIS ladies and gentlemen is the new defining sound of the breakfast.

The Jam > Tunage from 6-21 should def be included in these talks for best jam of 2008.
-
it helps if you\'re there to see it in it\'s full epicness. more than once.
zing!
text book ;)
-
this thread should be called:
UTICA Eppy 3
talk about sleeper tune/jam
if y\'all were\'nt there, check out 12/31/07
the wheel pwned my face!!!

It\'s just my opinion. I don\'t dislike the song, but I don\'t get the same feeling when I hear Ep 3 as I do with Moobo or TGSOT. My point was that if it was played more, it might grow on me and work it\'s way up to epic.

DSlotsanumbers knows all there is to know about the "jam" lingo
just wait till you hear me play a type 2

from phish.net:
Type I and Type II: John Flynn raised (date?) the distinction between two "types" of jamming. Type I jamming involves variations on a song\'s written notes and tempo; Type II jamming involves additional variations on structures and keys. Or, as he put it:
I think Phish jamming falls into two types of jamming:
1) Jamming that is based around a fixed chord progression
2) Jamming that improvises chord progressions, rhythms,
and the whole structure of the music.
Pornofunk / Type III: __ suggested (date) adding to the typology Type III jamming to categorize the funkified sound (a.k.a "porno-funk") that evolved throughout 1997, and particularly on the summer and fall US tours, especially in Also Sprach, Cities, Ghost, Gumbo, and Wolfman\'s Brother. Some feel that this is not a "type" of jamming, but something closer to a genre, and that Types I and II jamming could occur within various contexts, of which Phish adopts many (rock, jazz, funk, reggae, folk, bluegrass, et al.)

whats a type 2 jam?
a jam that deviates completely from the original beat/melody/time signature of the song which is being jammed
Think of most of the post hiatus ghosts or tweezers in phish history - many of them go into type 2 jams
thanx.that was very helpful ds673488.

MU eppy 4
-
"a new beginning" is not ep. 4
-
^^
Isnt Epp4 "A New Beginning", in which case you can hear it for yourself its been played a few times..
But come on Mooboos Voodoo rules the episodes
Damn I remember when PB shows used to be like a 50% chance of hearing Epp2.... now its such a rarity.
-
eppy 3 is the best of the 3 eppys, imo
eppy 4 i heard is even better
-
I agree, Ep. 3 is absolutely epic and its infrequency just adds to its epicness. And yes, Rush rocks my ham hocks off. Love it love it love it.
-

Ep 3 is good, but hasn\'t been played nearly enough to be called epic.
How does that have anything to do with it not being epic? It\'s been around for over 2 1/2 years and always makes any show it\'s played at that much better. One of the best things about it is how infrequently it gets played. The same goes for Mooboo\'s Voodoo (Episode 2).
-
Synergy has joined the ranks of ep 2, ep 3, scheme, queeb, rufus, TLATG>OE, in my mind. Love every second of the composed part and its possibly their best type II jam vehicle.
Not sure if I agree with this statement. Ep 2, TGSOT, Buquebus, Rufus are top shelf because they\'ve stoof the test of time; I would put OE on that list too. Ep 3 is good, but hasn\'t been played nearly enough to be called epic. TLATG is good, but I wouldn\'t put up there with some of the gems TB has created. Synergy is fun; my only issue with it is that unless the band has unlimited time, I\'ve just lost the potential for 2-3 songs because it\'s never shorter than 25 minutes; that being said, I don\'t mind the 25+ minute Buquebus.
-
rush in general rocks, i never get sick of it
-
Yeah Rush jam from Mill Street was up there too.
Rush is just so well conceptualized.
-
What about the rush jam... the one the video was made out of?
And sleeper jams... ones that weren\'t recorded... are always the best:
(denver tunage and puppetry, fort collins mayfly and scheme....)
wheres that motherfucker angelo?
-
I like Gladys a lot, totally unique tune. Never heard a song like that from another band. Always have a lot of fun with it. Utica Gladys was a TON of fun, but I don\'t know if it was the best jam of the year... It would take me a long time to try to whittle that one down...
-
2008
1. noho HLH
2. UTiCA SyN
those two are EPIC and a flip flop reversable tie but with a slight edge to the HLH because its more diverse.
I would probably put kinetic queeb at #3 for the year but its not in the same leauge. its one of the best ever recorded but the unheard upstate versions kinda trump it even though they don\'t count. they were just more experimental. plus the jam is split in two parts so it cant compare fairly with the top 2 straight up jams even though both jam sections of the queeb are fantastic.
there is quite a few jams that are just a notch below these that are hard to sort out.
there are also some sleeper jams out there I have to listen to a few more times that rival the top 3.
keep listening to the syn tho if your not convinced yet. It\'s not your average jam but man its so fuckin tasteful. the one repeating riff by timmy reminds me of the creation of the universe or something equally epic that I cant quite put my finger on in my subconscious primal archetypal awareness. you can hear the crowd just start coo\'ing when he lights it up after the take down around the 11 minute mark. seriously, listen to it again. its not as balls to the walls as noho hlh but its just as good. guaranteed to go down in history as one of the best jams ever by this band.
gladys is overated in general and so is the utica version. It\'s more or less standard for the first jam section then there is a quick take down and a long weird bass solo->hard edged but kinda meh peak out. its unique but really nothing epic. It was amazing live tho! and still a classic and always very fun tune, but still overated.
Just for comparisons sake I think the DS-SO is not as good as noho HLH and smashes the utica syn in a cage match but the syn is on a different wave length. the 07 utica mayfly is def out there too but there is a lot of really out there mayflys. The jam is not nearly as focused and driven and doesn\'t really hold a candle to the HLH, SO, or the SYN in my book.
-
^^^ that
-
in general i think gladys is an overrated song, although i love the jam section
-
I\'ve listened to this Synergy twice now and don\'t see the enormous praise. It\'s good but really? After listening to the Friday STL I\'d say that jam takes the cake in a duel. Can\'t comment on the Gladys or HLH everyone\'s talking about yet.
Gladys
Overrated.
:duck:
Generally speaking or specifically said Gladys?

But Breakfast has yet to live up to last years Utica Mayfly and Daniel Street "Space Oddity". OK Iron Horse HLH maybe ties these two...
I came in here to basically say the same thing. That Space Oddity might not ever be topped. It\'s probably why they haven\'t played it since.
i agree, i thought the ustica gladys was the best jam of the weekend
that jam really wasnt anything special imo. definetly not even close to best jam of weekend or year for that mater
Gladys def seemed like a regular Gladys to me too. IMO, Tribal Funk Affliction (with opening jam) was the song of the weekend.

Utica Synergy sounds ser indeed.
However it does not = Iron Horse HLH
Utica Gladys IMO is the best jam of the weekend and probably the best jam of the year to date.

that Synergy was sick but it aint there quite yet.
-
this thread should be titled " Ironhorse HHL" and it should say kinetic buquebus tied with best jam so far this year. i would say the synergy was the sleeper jam of the year so far, but not tied with best.
-
klout has jumped on team SYN...its a sick sick song

mayfly is nice and trancey in the beginning and has two nice peaks, a takedown and a nice funky revival. still it\'s way more cut and dry and ON the beaten path than the synergy which is just totally off the wall yet tight as hell. I put mooboos from stone church, kinetic queeb, and a few other jams from the church run, even puppetry from river st above this mayfly on the jams of the year list. But weekend wise its up there in the top 5 with gladys, synergy, tribal, queeb, sound, reba

I\'m not disputing the serness of mayfly or the others. There is definitely a few up up in the top 5 or 10 of the year
but that doesn\'t take away from the synergy
E to the P to the I to the C homeboy
it took me all day/night to post, listened to the jam a few times, along with mayfly and the others. i agree it is at least top 2 best jams of weekend (tied 3 way with mayfly and CMSS intro). we havenet even heard the last 2 nights who knows if IAQ or metro is taking over ?

^^ its obviously best jam thus far in 2008, im sure all of us have thought of that but realized
btw i am sure GFunk would love to help here, but he has no idea what we are talking about hahaha ! SALLY
-
Me thinks that if you\'re going to call for a "Best Jam of 2008", that statement should be made on January 1, 2009, otherwise, you\'ll always be working with a moving target and potentially changing you mind after every "epic" show.
-
i dont buy it. mayfly jam was just or almost as ser, jam > CMSS was insane, queeb jam was top notch per us. i dont think you can rate a best jam from either of these shows, because if you really wanted to get into it, these could technically have the best jams from each song played all year. i hear what you are saying klout, but that would make the mayfly and many other jams tied or 3rd to it, which doesnt really work.
not to mention the 2 TFA jams
-
its straight grill ownage the whole time
-
gonna put it on right now....
tim and matt do some pretty cool stuff in synch with each other at one point
-
it was an absolutely tremendous jam...although i think i had more fun during the BGE jam
-
and to think, i skipped it because i wanted to hear the new songs, then the 14th... guess i need to go back and listen to the run in order, huh?!
-
Tied with noho HLH for best jam of the year, 2008.
