I wonder if the zoo staff gets embarrassed when their monkey\'s start boning in front of Miss Johnsons 3rd grade class (ZOOKEEPER ZOOKEEPER, THOSE ANIMALS ARE KILLING EACH OTHER!).

Of course I like zoos!  what else is there to do with a bus load of retards?

It\'s a boring day - I\'ve got nothing to do
Except to get a load of retards and drive em to the zoo
Oh oh oh takin\' retards to the zoo (x2)
Load \'em on a bus just for laughs
Down a winding road stepping on the gas
Down a winding road just to stay dreaming
Down a winding road with the retards screaming
Oh oh oh takin\' retards to the zoo (x2)
One of them blowing a big spit bubble
Slam on the brakes at the first sign of trouble
Head on collision bodies everywhere
Head on collision retards beware
Oh oh oh takin\' retards to the zoo (x2)

I\'m always excited to get to a zoo and end up depressed. Check out my profile pic from Portland, it\'s my favorite shot from a zoo I\'ve taken. I named him Jack Handy...... and people doubt evolution.

i think that the lincoln parkzoo in chi town has a great setup for the apes, lots of room and stuff to do

the lincoln park zoo was actually really nice i thought! the apes especially seemed to be pretty chill....

i remember the the wild animal park in san diego (http://www.sandiego.org/listing/Visitors/2985) having plenty of room for animals to run around it, it was a really great experience, much more natural feeling...

Those animals are stoked at The Wild Animal Park. That I can deal with. I mean I get all the absolutely wonderful work the great San Diego Zoo does but it\'s still a Zoo. The Wild Animal Park is HUGE and way more conducive to a "natural" way of living for the animals. I just do not get how we have the right to cage animals just because they are exotic and neat to learn about. How we get to play God and decide which animals get "saved" and which do not.
It\'s ridiculous.

I think it depends on the animal and the enclosure.  As a general rule, I do not agree with large mammals being kept in captivity (elephants, large apes, sea mammals, etc).  They are just too intelligent and too big for captivity to do them justice.  I find it particularly sad when I see dolphins and whales in captivity.... super intelligent animals that are used to having free reign of the open ocean confined to a glorified aquarium and coerced into doing tricks for our entertainment.

I do feel that smaller, less intelligent animals can lead a quality life in captivity.

Despite the negatives, I will say that zoos do alot to promote awareness about the plight of wildlife.  Kids love the zoo... they don\'t necessarily grasp the fact that these animals are being held captive, they just like to check them out .  This interaction fosters their interest in wildlife and may lead to them persuing a career in ecology or environmetal science and helping to preserve nature or making some kind of difference.

In short, yes, it sucks for the individual animals that are stuck in cages. However, these aniamls act as stewards of their species in a way and open peoples eyes to what they have to lose by not recycling that can or throwing that battery in the trash can.  It\'s almost like they sacrifice themselves for the betterment of their species and nature in general.

If it was not for zoos, many people would not even have a clue these animals actually existed, and that would make it even harder to protect them and their environments.

I guess my opinion is that zoos are a necessary evil of conservation.  I do sort of get depressed when I go, but my 18 month old son absolutely LOVES it.  And, if it gets him excited about animals and conservation, then it is a good thing.

what about animals that have been bread in captivity?

breeding animals in captivity has saved dozens of species from extinction. most animals in zooz now have been captive bred (and thus have never known anything but captive life), but just as many captive bred animals are released back into the wild.

when people go to zoos it promotes a positive feeling towards animals and conservation. zoos and aquariums are also home to wildlife/wildlife rescue specialists who help save certain animals from dying, such as seals and whales caught in fishing nets. The mystic aquarium saves a bunch of animals from such scenarios all the time.

i find the Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport to be VERY depressing.  The animals don\'t seem to be well cared for.  Roger Willaims Zoo in Rhode Island is very nice and the animals there seem a little but more functioning.  Bbbut the whole idea of zoos makes me slightly torn.  I think its great we can view animals we may never see in person, but then again, what gives us that right?

I do enjoy aquariums.  Sea animals always seem so happy.

While I am young, hip, and with it, I\'d like to go adventuring to see these animals from a distance where they really live.

That\'s one of the things I like about hunting; you emerse yourself in their world...then kill them.

I think that game reserves are the coolest uber zoos around.

The last time we were at the Zoo we found it to be depressing.

I would much prefer that the animals be in their natural environment.

I think saving animals through zoos is cool. But capturing and taking them out of their natural surroundings for the sole purpose of being put on display is wrong IMHO.

If they have been rescued or they are trying to save the species it is more understandable but I think it is just a real reminder that we (humans) for the most part have destroyed their habitats.

I guess I wish they were not necessary.

I love zoos!  It\'s great that we can be so close to exotic animals.  I think, for the most part, the owners and operators do their best to take care of the animals.  I am sure it\'s difficult to know exactly what each animal needs to be comfortable & exist, but at least they\'re safe & cared for at the zoo!

:hscratch: btw, what do the zoos own, leith?

\'s = possession, or contraction ;)

it depends on the animal and the enclosure its given. to most animals, life in the wild is an intense struggle to survive. every living moment is devoted to calorie acquisition and preservation to increase the chances of reproduction; how can i survive long enough to make the most offspring?  I n a zoo animals are given a constant supply of food with no selection pressure. if they are healthy, they will survive and often be given a chance to reproduce. Much like domesticated animals they have enough free time to be lazy and take on personalities like our cats and dogs. If the enclosure is adequate, a zoo can be a luxurious experience for most wildlife.

problems are:
lack of exercise
insufficient area of enclosure
lack of social stimuli
lack of privacy

at the indianapolis zoo there was a single male lion in a relatively small enclosure. the sign mentioned how lions are social animals and live in prides composed of many indiviaduals, i felt bad for the poor guy.

i also typically don\'t like bird setups, theres just not enough flying space.

i think that the lincoln parkzoo in chi town has a great setup for the apes, lots of room and stuff to do

i like zoos unless they are hag

I don\'t.
I hate seeing all those animals caged up and when you look in their eyes you see 1 of 2 things.
Either I want to eat you or What the **** is going on here?
I don\'t like an animal looking at me with either of those looks.
