drink switchback (it does a body good)

mmmmm.  I can walk to the Switchback brewery, and smell the Magic Hat brewery on a calm night.  Yet I\'m drinking cheap Labatt\'s right now :rooster:.

When I was in Cincinnati I tried a new beer that I really liked: Southern Tier Oak Aged Unearthly IPA. It\'s an Imperial/Double... 11%. It was interesting with the oak flavor and a touch of vanilla. Different for an IPA. Delicious!

very good stuff

Trout River in Lyndonville, VT is one of my all-time fav\'s...shame we can\'t get it in CT. I went up there 3 or 4 years ago and LOVED the Chocolate Oatmeal Stout, as well as their pizza. Very nice folks.

Main Street in Willimantic (H-Town), CT is also top notch, if you\'ve never been there I suggest making the trip. It moved from a tiny little store into the old post office which is HUGE. I spent many a day and night there sampling very, very good beer, Cask Ales (STRONG) and eating there nacho platters.

Local store bought (for me) is hands down Dirty Penny Ale from Old Burnside. It\'s about 60% Ten Penny and 40% Stout, Just smelling it makes me smile:)

I\'ve noticed Sam Adams White Ale in a lot of the stores:

which of the following is true:

A. it\'s a new beer
B. it now enjoys a much larger distribution and can be found coast-to-coast
C. I\'ve only recently noticed it and it has always been there

(I\'m sure Wolfman can best answer the question)

Any good?

I\'ve noticed some of the larger beer companies are trying to break into the craft segment.  Budweiser has the American Ale and Michelob presents a porter, bock, honey wheat as so forth.  I\'m curious to know if any of these offerings are actually decent.  I\'ve been on a Northern California stout/porter tear as of late and am unlikely to try any of the majors without a solid recommendation.

Any feedback?

Al, I haven\'t tried any of them, but personally I wouldn\'t give most of the macrobrewers the time of day.  I can\'t imagine any of their brews being any thing but pedestrian.  Keep drinking what you\'re drinking.  Lately, I\'ve been hitting the Midwest Stouts and Porters and we gots lots of \'em, plus some new seasonal IPA\'s.  :beerban:

the michelob one\'s aren\'t very good compared to others in that department, the porter and marzan (spelling?) are the better of the 4 in the mix pack, the pale ale is terrible. One thing is they are cheap, roughly around $11/12 per 12 pack, which has led me to buy it on several occasions, since they are all better than bud light for the same price.

Flossmoor Station IPA.  A highly rated local Chicagoland microbrewery.  It\'s about 15 minutes from the house (it\'s so dangerous).  The current version is Vishnu\'s Vice.  7.7% abv.  Been bringing home growlers from there on a regular basis.  It\'s the best one I\'ve tried yet and I\'ve tried almost 40 since NYE.  Even better than Bell\'s Two Hearted Ale, which I had at The Lakefront in Menomonie, when I saw the band last month.  But it\'s a seasonal and soon to be replaced, within two weeks I\'m hearing (bummer).  Trying to drink in as much as possible before then.  Do a google search for it.  The reviews on beeradvocate.com are serious.  Last time looked there were 8 reviews, all between 4.25 and 4.75 out of 5.  PM me you addy and I\'ll send you a bottle.

Flossmoor cleaned up at least year\'s Great American Beer Festival.  Those are the toughest awards in America to win and they did very well.  I gotta try their stuff.  Last time I was in Chicago in March I plowed through Three Floyds\' entire portfolio over 4 days.  That was the best beer drinking I\'ve had in a long time, what a brewery.  Will make sure to find Flossmoor next time!

Flossmoor Station Brewpub is the old train station that was renovated which now houses this amazing place.  If you are staying in Chicago, there is a train from downtown that takes you right there.  Next time you are out this way, give me a heads up, as I\'m always down for good beer.

Syracuse Brewfest (http://www.empirebrewfest.com/)

Quote
The Sixth Annual Empire State Brewing and Music Festival will be held on Friday July 11th from 5:00PM until 11:00PM (gates open at 4:30), at the City of Syracuse?s festival site in Clinton Square. Listed first by USA Today as ?Top Ten Beer Festivals in the America? (June 11th, 2004).

This is not your typical ?beer festival?. The festival was formed to protect, promote, represent and educate the craft brewing industry and its customers. It is a means for brewers and like businesses to inexpensively market their products directly to their target market customer. This is not a drinking event, this is a tasting event. The festival also explores a wide variety of regional and national music performers, designed to complement the event.

A commemorative 4 ? ounce glass is given to all patrons at the entrance. Admission allows 2 ounce samplings from a selection of 300 styles of beer. A "Cask Conditioned Ale Tent" (open 5:30 - 7:00pm) will be added this year as a result of the popularity and success of the "Belgium Beer Tent" (open 8:00 -9:30pm) that was added to the festival in 2006. Both of these unique sampling areas are designed for the more discriminating beer connoisseur. Six bands will perform on two stages throughout the evening. Retailers related to the brewing industry will also be participating. The finest area restaurants will offer creative neo-traditional festival foods for purchase. (Ticket price does not include food).

The day is finally here! I\'ve only missed this once before. It\'s my favorite night all Summer. Tons of breweries/beers to sample. Most fill your +4oz cup to the top too. I\'m excited to check out the newly added Cask Conditioned Ale Tent. My friend will be pouring beers for Ommegang (Cooperstown, NY) so I\'m going to be in prime shape by the time this is over.

I really slacked and should have tried to get the Breakfast to play this. Instead, I have to listen to Donna The Buffalo for a couple hours. Oh well, maybe next year.

not really a fan of the super hoppy beer.

however, yuengling was $6 for a pitcher and the only other good beer they had was blue moon which was $4 something a bottle.  it was an easy decision.

That\'s too bad about the kegerator Todd.  It sounds like it\'s just crappy.

You can get ice at the bottom of a keg by putting the keg in a bucket of some sort.  Tough to do in a kegerator but possible.

Any gas company carries beer gas, but they can\'t deliver to your house, so any store that sells you CO2 can get beer gas from the same supplier they get the CO2 from.  All the bars have it.  Honestly, it\'s probably not necessary for a home setup, it\'s more important if you\'re running a commercial establishment, but by all means give it a shot and see what you think.

My biggest complaint is when I put in a new keg, it takes forever for it to reach temp.

The good news is that it\'s probably not a problem with your kegerator (unless the inside is leaking air).  The bad news is that it is probably a problem with some fundamental beer physics.  A keg placed in a 38 degree refrigerator will only cool down by about one degree per hour until it reaches 38.  So if you put a room temperature (72 degree) keg into any refrigerator, you\'re looking at about 34 hours (a day and a half) for it to cool down to drinking temperature.

The problem is the kegerator rarely reaches 38 degrees, with a cold keg or empty. From what I\'ve read, it is a common problem with the model we have. The kegs I have bought came from Walsh\'s store 20 or so minutes from my house, so it shouldn\'t have warmed up that much in transit.

Quote from: Wolfman;189735
Ice tricks can help a little, though they\'re usually better for changing perceived temperature than actually changing the temperature.  The best thing to do is to place ice along the bottom of the keg since the beer at the bottom is the first beer to come out.  Icing the top of a keg doesn\'t actually do anything, but everyone does it all the time at parties and it does make the beer look colder which is often all you need.
And just how would I get ice near the keg at the bottom? My philosophy was that cold air drops, hence ice on top would cool the beer below. Six, half dozen or another, I make it work and the beer is

And yes, cleaning the lines is VERY important! I\'ve never untapped a keg before though. When we have a keg going, the longest it sits without action is probably only a few days. I just draw a beer and throw it down the drain and then drink on. Works for me.

And...I\'ve never heard of "beer gas". We get CO2 from a place in North Haven. If "beer gas" is better and you can point us in a direction where we can get it in the future, I\'d appreciate it.

Anyone have experience with Kegerators ?

I have been thinking of getting 1.

We love ours. Although we haven\'t had any beer in it in a while. :(

what kind do you have ? things i should watch out for etc ?

I\'ve had 5 different models and they\'re all basically the same.  The go-to brands are Banner and Micromatic but others seem to work fine.

The most common problems, really, are by users.  One is that people get 1/2 barrels and then take 2 months to drink them, and leave them tapped the whole time.  This is bad enough for the beer if you\'re using beer gas (75% N2, 25%CO2) but on top of that most people run 100% CO2 which is fine if you\'re finishing stuff efficiently but eventually overcarbonates the beer and messes up the flavor.  The other common user error is that people don\'t clean their lines.  You\'ve gotta flush some Checkmate or other heavy-duty caustic cleaner through that bad boy once a month if you really want it to pour nice.

So three things to do:

1. Consider 1/6 barrels or 1/4 barrels unless you know for sure a lot of people are coming over and that you can definitely wack that 1/2 barrel in under 4 weeks.
2. Clean the line once a month.
3. Untap the keg whenever you\'re not using it.  CO2 is fine, you don\'t need beer gas, but if you\'re using compressed air stop immediately and switch to CO2.

I believe ours is a Danby. Robyn got it off of ebay. My biggest complaint is when I put in a new keg, it takes forever for it to reach temp. I found that by simply putting a couple tupperwares full of ice on top of the keg for the first day or two works. I\'ve read that you can relocate the sensor to a glass of water stored behind the keg, but haven\'t been that ambitious yet. One other issue is having to manually defrost it two or three times a year. You can spend a lot of money and get one with out these minor problems, but for the money, it\'s just fine.

This is def my favorite brewery in the US. I\'ve been trying all their brews since I was in high school and they\'re easily the most collected brewery in my beer bottle collection (25-30 different bottles). Hopefully you can find a distributer near you. I\'m fortunate enough to have one down the road which frequently stocks up on their 22oz bottles.

I\'ve tried the Santa\'s it was okay.

As I said before I probably won\'t be trying the chipotle, chocolate, or brown nectar because of the flavours.

I am going to look for the imperial stout.

Speak of imperials stouts, this is a good one (Again form Victory)

Their Brutal Bitter should definitely be on that list.

Tyzack- Stone\'s Ruination is one of my all-time favorite beers.

Nothing wrong with Sammy Smith, but it is definitely NOT American craft beer.  Support your local brewer!  Or at least an American one.  Try again.

I\'ve got to agree with Jocelyn on the Dead Guy, a bit overhyped.

Please recomend more beers by them. Dead Guy is the only one I can reliabily find in 6-packs around here. Some stores have a good selection of their 22oz, but most of them seem tagged as "flavoured" (Moca, coffee, chocalate,) etc, and I am of the opinion that beer should not be atrificially flavoured.

How come Stone Coast hasn\'t gotten any love? Their beers are as potent as their names;
Arigant Bastard, Ruination, I think both of those are IPAs, though the Bastard might be an Ale.

As for as IPA\'s go, Great Divide Titan (jking) and Victory Hop Devil (tyzack) are my current favorites.  As for Bell\'s, I have always loved their beers, which were all over Chicago for years.   Check out this longish article from 2006 and see why I can\'t get it anymore.  Chicago/Illinois politics and practices hard at work screwing the little guy.  It\'s total bullshit.  https://securesite.chireader.com/cgi-bin/Archive/abridged2.bat?path=2006/061215/BELLS&search=beer%20distributors%20%20bell\'s

Massachutts Beers:

In central mass:
Wachusett Brewing Company (I recomend the Blackshack porter (my first beer) and their Nut Brown Ale)
South-eastern:
Buzard\'s Bay (Only thing that\'s good is their pilsner)

Western:
Everyone knows Berkshire and Opa-Opa but there is on in Chicopee called "High and Mighty - The Beer of the Gods"

It\'s worth it just for the box.

Rhode Island:
One Area Code
One Airport
One Beer
Newport Storm.

In honor of American Craft Beer Week, I am going to try to drink something OTHER than IPAs. It\'s getting kind of ridiculous; I have been seriously neglecting the other fine frosty beers.

Haa ha \'Gansett. I have a a pin on my winter jacket that I got at The Wheelhouse that has that very logo on it. I was sold at the "Hi, Neighbor!"

Just released again yesterday for Craft Beer Week. Hopefully it makes its way to Syracuse in the next week or so.

Until then, I have a couple of these from 2006 and 2007 that I might have to bust out.

hopsickle was a blunt sledgehammer of hops on the tongue. i didn\'t care much for it (although i was trying it when i wanted a hopslam, which is truly the nectar of the gods!), but it wasn\'t horrible.  for good, basic ipa\'s, try great divide, lagunitas (although their maximus is pretty intense, too), stone, avery (maharajah (which isn\'t their basic ipa) is the best beer out there, in my not-so humble opinion), bell\'s, racer 5, hell.... i could go on and on... let\'s leave it at this, next jan/feb, when bell\'s hopslam gets released, MAKE SURE you get yourself a case and horde it!!! it was a struggle to find, since so many know about its greatness, but it is SO worth it!!! we had a case for my bachelor patry and pretty much killed it on night one, on top of $150 of other beers (this doesn\'t include our bar tabs, just our at-home drinkng)... and at 10% abv, there were some seriouslydrunk and happy people at our place!!

Funny, I actually have Moylan\'s IPA in my refrigerator.  I have a huge store nearby with lots of craft beers to choose from and many have their ratings listed to make it easier to scope out the gems.  Moylan\'s scored 95/100.    Go to BEVmo.com (the local store) to search their listings.
The Moylan\'s was excellent, now on to their Hopsickle Imperial IPA (9.2% apv).  Thanks for the info about BEVmo.com, I will definitely check it out.  I\'ve been referring to BeerPal.com and the BeerAdvocate.com for suggestions.  One cannot have enough sources about good beer.  Looks like sobriety is out of the question this weekend.

Colorado seems to be a Mecca for craft beers, Salli Alli, I am so jealous.  I\'ve been on an IPA kick ever since NYE in Utica.  Have tried at least a dozen different ones already this year. Enjoying a 22 oz. Moylan\'s IPA brewed in Novato, CA, as I type this.  Tasty stuff.  Al Z, I\'ll look for the Marin IPA next time I\'m in my local liquor superstore.    Life\'s too short to drink shitty beer.
