nah, gyms not open early enough. The couple of days over the summer where I went in after 6am I did but there weren\'t many. lots of rides in the afternoon after work though!

I think I spoke too soon.  I kid I work with told me that the route I\'d take from the train to work is 9 miles up hill.  I may need to take a test ride some weekend.

What is the dress code at your work?  My place is casual so I can roll up sweaty in shorts (which I did today).

summers are casual.  not that casual.

I tried to pull something together this week.  But the 22 miles from home to work is too much for a doughy b like me.  It would have worked if they would let me take the train from Mlfd to Bpt (11 minutes), would have cut the commute down to 9 miles.  But Metro North has a no bike rule during peak hours.

So **** the earth, and **** bike week

Just heard this morning that Gov. Rell is pushing Metro North to have bike storage on the new trains for next year, and to allow commuters to bring a bike onboard during peak hours.

good deal! start stretching now Slim

I picked out a pretty big, padded seat for mine.  Maybe the store where you got it will exchange yours.  I\'ve been riding a bit every day, and it does get easier.  I really like getting the fresh air, and it\'s perfect right now with all the spring flowers in bloom.  Somehow I doubt my commute is as **** as Wolfie\'s though!

Bike seats are not as comfortable as other kinds of seats for obvious reasons of their design, so there is a certain level of comfort that simply doesn\'t exsist on them. That said, there are several things you can do to adjust them to get a more comfortable ride:

the seat should be possitioned at a height so that you\'re sitting comfortably with the leg just slightly bent at the knee when the pedal is at it\'s lowest possition. you never want your leg to go completely straight (lock out the knee).
Keep in mind that because your ankle will bend as well, you want to make sure that the seat height accounts for keeping a bend in your knee no matter what possition your ankle is in.

once that is set, as long as the bike is the right size for you, you should be fine. If you\'re really uncomfortable all the time (back, shoulders, neck) bring it to a shop and ask them to measure you for it. you may be on a bike that is too big or too small for you. The seat can be sliden forwards/backwards until you find a comfortable spot for it. You can also sit on a seat in several different ways front and back to adjust comfort level.

If it\'s still uncomfortable, look into getting a bigger seat. some seats have springs built into them for shock absorbsion. others are wider which gives more cushioning. There is a difference between mens and womens seats. You can also get gel seat covers that slip on to give the seat you already have more padding.

You can also get a pair of bike shorts, which have padding in them, as we\'ve discussed earlier in this thread. ;)
I\'ve also seen bmx bike shorts that are normal looking workout shorts but they have the padding in them so that no one would know you were wearing them.

Bought a bike this weekend.  I forgot how much fun it is to ride.  But I don\'t remember the seat hurting my ass this much.  Any tips from the more experienced riders?  I\'m already looking forward to a ride today.

5-for-5 this week!  I also rode home in the rain tonight but didn\'t care.  I did, however, catch a wheel in some railroad tracks coming off a HUGE downhill (near Heath Street station) and went into major DEATH WOBBLE at 30MPH.  I saved it miraculously!  I was seriously 1 inch away from writing this post from a hospital.  I gotta watch that section, especially in the rain.

Anyways, in honor of this week, I took a photo from my bike of the Mass Pike westbound leaving Boston during PM rush hour.  Nobody was moving at all!  Suckaz! Meanwhile I was bombing home in no time, cruising over the parking lot that is the Mass Pike and laughing all the way!  I fly down that ramp on the right and I don\'t even have to pedal for the last 1/4 mile home : ) Enjoy!

yeah... my first ride home in the rain...... chilly..... and trying to draft down hill with your face near the front wheel.... not a good idea either.

on another note. i spit of 3 cars for doing stupid **** and almost killing me. the look on peoples face when i tell them off from the middle of an intersection they decided to go through a red light on.

Well, I biked to the lab today.  It took about 20 min and was more strenuous than I remember from biking in high school and college..
Now I get to bike home in the pouring rain.
oh well.

don\'t worry your not the only one.

i\'m pretty pumped though, i knocked 10 minutes off my ride so stick with it ulee it gets easier. the first day i rode i couldn\'t walk up the two flights of stairs to my office. i was holding on to the handrail for for my life and finally pulled my self up. now i run up the stairs for that last second burn before i sit on my ass in front of this computer.

and look on the bright side... atleast its the ride home and not the ride there.

my knees are still shot so i didn\'t bike.  although i walked the 4 miles to pick up my car last week.  i\'d have walked to work this week (about half an hour walk) if it wasn\'t raining and if i actually knew when i was getting out of work every day.  working a few 12 hour days makes me lazy.

Just awesome.  Boston is teeming with bike paths and lanes, it\'s great.

Good to hear they are adding bike lanes all over the place.

Are you gonna continue to bike to work in the winter, too?

I\'ve got a friend out in Newton who bikes downtown every day of the year, rain, snow and all.

Wolfman, how is your route to work?  Somerville -> Boston, or are you living in a new place now?  I don\'t recall many bike lanes in the city.

My route is awesome.  I live in Lower Allston on the opposite side of the turnpike from the sports depot.  My ride is 3.9 miles, 3.4 of which is all on bike paths.  I ride along the river bike path from the Genzyme building all the way to Mass Ave, then ride a treacherous .4 miles on Mass Ave, then I\'m right back onto another path at the Mass Ave T stop all the way to the stony brook stop where the brewery is.  38 minutes, half along the river.  Just awesome.  Boston is teeming with bike paths and lanes, it\'s great.

Riding a bike to work is a nice concept if you live close enough to work, but I\'m not about to bike 25+ miles via the Garden State Parkway (which I believe is illegal).  That being said, riding a bike for a prolonged period of time - not fun; that\'s why I always chose a skateboard as my means of transportation before I had a car.

the spandex shorts are padded on the butt, which is why they look weird when you\'re just standing so yes they absolutely make a difference! If you\'re going to sit on a bike for hours at a time, you take anything you can to help out with the comfort factor.

Also, I was unaware I was gay. According to my ex I\'m also gay for doing yoga, so I must be pretty flaming by your logic. :hscratch:

That argument doesn\'t make sense.

I sit on my ass for hours at a time but my dockers don\'t come with ass-padding.

Seriously.

I have to task, and no offense to any spandex-clad **** on this board; does it really make that much of a difference?

Or, better yet, does the amount of performance you get offset you gay-count? And if so, what\'s the saving throw?

I almost started skechting out a D&D rule for calculating that...

gay-count??

i ride a road bike. i wear spandex while doing so. i\'m sure if i was on an urban bike and/or just riding leisurely, i wouldn\'t care what i was wearing, but i couldn\'t imagine having any sort of shorts/pants flopping around on my legs while riding my road bike.

besides, i always thought one\'s sexuality was determined by what sex one is attracted to. but maybe it\'s based on clothing.

Collapsible bicycles do not need a permit, but must be folded while boarding, exiting, and being stored on a train.

Hey bike ****:  how is the Dahon Cadenza 8?  Any other folding bikes you\'d recommend?

i\'ve heard good things about Dahon in general, but can\'t speak for specific models.

but i can send you here:

I love where I live because it is reasonable biking distance (or a short ride to a BART stop) to most of the major attractions in the Bay Area.  My work is only 4-5 miles away and I do frequently ride there in the summer.  In fact, I\'m gonna hop on the bike again tomorrow.  I haven\'t been doing nearly the amount of riding I used to do.

As for Northeast biking, many of the roads are old and narrow country roads that do not safely accomodate bikes.  Out here, you can piece together safe passage on bike lanes/trails to any city you wish to bike to.  The cities out here also have serious committees and resources for adding new lanes designated for bikes.  The new Bay Bridge (under construction) will have bike lanes suspended off the side of the bridge for travel between OAK/SF.  There are 500 miles of bay shoreline and they are halfway to the goal of providing bike access to all of those miles.  Pretty ser stuff.  But the Bay Area is pretty compact along the inner bay and the weather is conducive to biking most of the year round.

There are so many bikes on the road now, especially in SF.  I tried to go to a free music festival in Golden Gate Park last summer but there was no place to chain up, as there were an estimated 10,000 bikes chained up all over the place.  Unfortunately, many of the **** bikers are radical **** who have no respect for safety on the road and always instigate problems with cars.  I have almost kicked some spandex-clad **** ass on many occasions.

Very intersting, however, these are the rules that apply to me:

Bikes are not allowed on any trains on:
Weekday trains during peak hours (shaded columns)
New Years Eve and 4th of July between 10 AM and 6 PM Inbound and after 4 PM Outbound
At all other times bicycles are allowed on trains. Folding bicycles, when folded, are allowed on all trains at all times.

Can you take a bike onto the train in the morning?  I could take a train the 2 stops from Milford to Bridgeport, then it would only be 9 miles to ride.

depends on the amount of hills, how busy the street traffic is, and your overall health. For me 21 miles would be around an hour depending on the route and if I was carrying anything, like clothes for work in a backpack.

21 miles is very tough to do in an hour, especially if you are carrying anything at all and if there are any hills along the way.  plus you dont want to be sweaty as hell when you get to work so its better to go on a more leisurely ride.

i see now that you have a shower, thats pretty convenient

you could get one of those backpack bikes. They fold up so you can just carry it like a rolling piece of luggage on the train/into work. The wheels are smaller so you wont go as fast but it\'s better than having it stolen and being s.o.l. when you get off the train.

that\'s a damn good idea.

who makes them? (for a google/ebay search)

Not happening for me. I only have a mountain bike, and it is in need of some serious repair. Plus, I\'m not up for biking all of my riding gear, and things like saddle pads etc etc, to work when it is normally a half hour drive on 50 mph roads.

It\'s a good thought though. When work was closer I used to bike all of the time.

Actually, my road bike doesn\'t have reflectors either; more wasted weight. I should ride my hybrid to work, it\'s probably safer.

two weeks out. Personally, I\'m going to try and do it every day regardless of the weather or the fact that I\'ll be leaving at 3:15am to make it in on time. Even if you don\'t bike, try walking somewhere or carpooling. Anything to cut down on the amount you\'re in your car by yourself. If for nothing else, think of all the money you\'ll save because you wont be buying so much gas at (last time for me, $3.74 a gallon)
