I got another Dum. There weren\'t any carpet pythons there that I was particularly impressed with. Most of them had blurred, unclean markings. I found two that I liked, but the "breeders" had little information about them and made me uncomfortable. One said that he didn\'t know if his snake was a "carpet python or a carpet-diamond cross" so i said forget this guy.

The Dum I got is the prettiest I have seen, with deep mahogany coloring, very clean, sharp markings, and hints of pink and purple in the lighter areas. It also seems to be a very confident snake. it has hardly used its hide, which is unusual for a baby Dumeril\'s, or any baby snake for that matter. Has also eaten since I got it, which I think is impressive since I only picked him up on Saturday.

:)

Yes, basically shove a stick up it\'s ass. If it stops, male...keeps going in, female.

Actually, you got it backwards.

Joc, yes, all of the carpet pythons (jungle, coastal, inland, darwin, irian jaya, diamonds, etc) are all sub-species of Morelia spilota.

What kind of snake did you get?

If it\'s female and you shove a stick up her ass, it may help with the stress... And maybe even if it\'s a male... :duck:

Umm, what I meant was it isn\'t good to handle or bother a snake when it has come to a new home for a while, so you don\'t stress it. Jeez guys.

No pics of anybody yet; I\'ll post \'em when I\'ve got \'em.

So I got a new snake today. Don\'t know if it\'s a male or female yet, and I probably won\'t try to figure that out for a week or two. Want to wait until it\'s settled in before I stark poking at it. It shall be named something in tribute of Jeff Goldblum.

I also got James a triped beardie. A bunch of people at the expo were making fun of her and laughing at her and it made me sad so I took her home for next to nothing.

so you poke at it to determine its sex?

They are Australian.  Hatchlings can be a little bitey, but they grow out of it once they have a little size on them... as hatchlings they think everything wants to eat them so they are a little defensive.

Humidity is not an issue... they come from a fairly arid area, so you don\'t have to do anything special.

Good to know. I had a Brazilian Rainbow Boa (you want to talk about a nippy baby! Initially she would strike as soon as my hand was in her tank.) who needed very high humidity and I always had a hard time getting it right. I experienced mildew (even with a screen top) on top of other problems, and it made me decide to not do that again.

What type of carpet python do you suggest I look for? And what is the difference between a carpet and a diamond python?

Is one just a subspecies of another? Your look like what I thought were Diamond Pythons...

Yeah they are really beautiful. I haven\'t seen one around here at the little  shop I go to, but maybe at a big expo I could find one. Where are they from? I think I want to avoid a snake that needs high humidity. I\'ve done it before, and may do it again, but might want to avoid that hassle. These guys are pretty good to handle? I\'m not really a collector, and since I only have one snake, I want it to be one that I can interact with.

I would go for a carpet python.  They are about the same size as a dumerals, have nice temperments, and are quite beautiful.  Easy to take care of too.

Here are a few of mine:

That sucks, Joc.

Puking in boas is not all that uncommon and could have easilt been casued by too large of a meal, or getting too hot or cold after a meal.

Good luck finding a replacement.

Yeah... I am not sure what caused it. He had the same size mouse that he always eats, and I have thermometers and a thermostat in his tank,  and everything is on timers, so I don\'t know what would have caused a temperature swing in his tank. Who knows.

There is a big reptile expo on Saturday in Manchester. I\'m going to go poke around, but I\'m not sure if I want to get anyone. I would like another Dumeril\'s Boa, since they\'re beautiful, easy to tame, and a nice size, but I don\'t know....

Maybe I should just get a corn snake. heh. No.

i\'m sorry he died...

Well, sometimes my MySpace is dedicated to JG, the actor, and my snake is named after him. (Don\'t ask.)

Anyhow, thanks guys.

There is a big reptile expo in NH in April. I could get a new snake I suppose, and maybe name him The Fly, but I don\'t know, that might be disrespectful to Jeffrey.

Well, it turns out that is was Jeffrey Goldblum that died. I went to mist down his tank and discovered he died. He threw up last week after eating, which I was a little worried about but not terribly, because that does happen sometimes. I guess it was indicative of something serious going on. Maybe I should have paid more attention. :(

Things die all the time.

If you want to hide the smell, through PBR at the walls and carpet. That stuff gets a nice ordor after a while.
