dude, check out the version on the UMASS amherst show from 2001 (exact date uncertain, other songs played include HLH, magic fingers, bouree). there is a sicktimmy solo and the old school ending (also sick)
attraction is a highlight of every show its played at

take it back!!! take it back!!!
don\'t let the new ending blind you!!!! (unless you hate the whole song, in which case you\'ve already been blinded)

ok, I know I\'ll get a lot of **** for posting this, but... here goes...
I LOVE the catchy/"pop"/newb songs like Phaddy Boom Batty, Beef Barley, Drunk Monk Bar, GBFBITS, etc.  mostly because when i see these performed live, they get the crowd going!  While I appreciate their musical abilities, sometimes it\'s fun for these songs to pop out & surprise the otherwise jamminess of the sets. :duck:

best songs: mooboos, happy, sundance, garcian, surreal radio, Late>Over, WPOA, buquebus, eschers
(and good things)

worst: none of their songs are bad, some are just better than others. cut me some slack is sick, noglovenolove + beefbarleyjam = funkyasfuck. dig is just a chilled out tune, phaddy boom baddy was once my fav tune so back off, and bugs (c\'mon, you know you love it)

covers:they should play bouree more often (and learn minstrel in the gallery), space oddity, no quarter, peaches en regalia, terrapin station, question, all showcase the diversity that the breakfast can pull off
but the best covers ever were the puppet house shows of august 2005
ps, LA woman=rager

So reviving an old thread because Hot for Teacher has to be the worst cover EVER BY Any band!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sit down Waldo!

I love Hot for Teacher!

Hot for Teacher is a GREAT song just not when The Breakfast play it.

Nothing about the song is good. Well maybe the drumming.

Other than the drumming when they play this song it makes them look like a bunch of hacks and not a ripping band just having fun.

Really it does.

prior to today ive never seen this thread... great to read thru some history of the band and old school fans.... for a newbie like myself anyway.....

at this point my opinions are as such:
best orig...... rufus, gravity(cuz the jams have been silly as of late), and even tho i only heard it once so far, intension was absolutely disgusting in the most incredible way ever.... o ya plus i love psygn

worst orig..... is hard to say worst, but i guess i get weird during the weird part in phatty boom batty, but the chorus is obviously great

fav cover..... obviously i **** my pants when they played peaches en regalia, timmy plays that song like he wrote it himself... and memory of a free festival always makes me feel good

worst cover.... i havent heard one i didnt like yet, but even tho i loved it at first, i think i will get tired of hot for teacher if gets played too much more

my faves are rufus and buquebus. i also love mayfly, psygn, and question mark and the mind.

i really don\'t like cosmic spaceway rhyme. i could also do without vera street, no glove no love, and drunk monk bar.

Five Worst Originals: Dig, Bugs, No Glove No Love, May Fly Disarray, Cut Me Some Slack

Five Best Covers: No Quarter, Sir Psycho Sexy, Legend of a Mind, China Cat Sunflower, Echidna\'s Arf (Of You)

Worst Covers: L.A. Woman, Soul Finger, SWLABR, The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill, You Enjoy Myself
How times change.  Here\'s my new list.

Best Originals
Doughboy: "Countdown to Ecstacy" era Steely Dan sound
Funky Bill\'s Circus Cliche: Pure showcase of technique
The Grand Scheme of Things: Musically, it edges out Spunk the most well-written Breakfast tune
Vera St.: Universal/mainstream appeal... and it still rocks
Gladys Pimp and Kangaroos With Me: Some of the best Breakfast jams of all-time have started right here

Worst Originals
Dig: Make it funkier and it\'s a PFUNK tune.  As is... forget about it
No Glove, No Love: Not that funny...
Cut Me Some Slack: Not enough action
Beef Barley: Good jams have come from this song, but it has definitely run its course
Phaddy Boom Baddy: Newbies (but not oldnewbie) love this song before they really learn what The Breakfast can do.  Cut out a verse or two and leave in the jams and we\'ll talk.

Best Covers
No Quarter: Ser... just ser
Sir Psycho Sexy: Chili Peppers meet Zappa meet TPalms
Peaches en Regalia: Just barely tops Echidna\'s as the best Zappa cover
Mommy, What\'s a Funkadelic?: Gets the crowd rocking and Timmy\'s fingers flying
The Other One: As long as it keeps its "once in a while" mystique, it will always be a treat

Worst Covers
Message in a Bottle: The ser ending jam isn\'t enough to save a mediocre song
Cinnamon Girl: Why bother?
Jumpin\' Jack Flash: I\'m always left disappointed, especially when it ends a show
L.A. Woman: I don\'t know how the Doors made this song popular in the first place...
Soul Finger: Stupid but harmless.

Title: Covers Compilation??
Post by: boombox on August 03, 2004, 05:55:05 pm
Have been thinking of putting together a PB covers collection for a while.

I have been through this thread and created a composite list. I have some some other suggestions I\'ve added, but if this is the final word (which of course, now, it won\'t be ;) ) I might start working on it.

Most frequently praised covers at top of list.

And the board\'s undisputed fave cover is....

Echidna\'s Arf (Of You) (FIVE TIMES!! Also 2 for ANY Zappa)

3x:
Hush

2x:
Sir Psycho Sexy
Legend of a Mind
Needle and the Damage Done
Peace Frog

1x:
Earache My Eye
No Quarter
China Cat Sunflower
Rockin\' in the Free World
Fire
Peaches en Regalia
memory of a free festival
night of thumpasorus peoples
mommy whats a funkadelic
Inca Roads (if it\'s ever played)
Eat That Phone Book Coda
Suzie Q
Wharf Rat
Space Oddity
In the Flesh
Any P Funk covers
Chameleon
Other One
Help!>Slipknot
One Big Mob
Shakedown Street
Flower Punk
King Kong

Added by me:

Karn Evil
Lady Madonna
Message In A Bottle

Please feel free to add further comments, eg the "best" version of a cover. Though it\'s really the result of our collective favourites, I\'m doing this for me, but if it turns out OK, I will BT it - that is if Tim and the boys won\'t mind (Will have to email if I decide to share it.)

Except for their both being pretty mellow, I don\'t think it\'s fair to group Vera St with Gypsy Girl..... Vera St is SOOOOO much a better, more mature song....

to me puppetry is almost as good as it gets...ep2 is as good as it gets..all the new songs are up there too.gypsy girl and vera street belong in the same category.not necessarily a bad category either.i prefer a more rockin kinda tune.puppetry just brings me back to a much simpler time!

Ive seen some sick barley jams.  sick i tell you....
glove should have remained an instrumental piece....
phaddy boom is a pretty sweet anthem if you ask me....

and as far as gypsy girl goes,   maybe you aren\'t heady enough to dig it \'rooney  :hscratch:

though the instrumental gypsy gir that timmy did at cliffahans a few weeks back was pretty heady in my opinon brah :lollol:

I definitely lump Glove in the same category with Beef and Phaddy.  I don\'t know what category that is, but they\'re all very similar.  Tough to like or dislike one without feeling the same about the other two.  Difference with Glove is that it is not overplayed.

\'no glove\' - a short song with a little humor (which belongs in music) and novelty
\'gypsy girl\'-  horrible chorus and a poor attempt at headiness

I don\'t find the lyrics, as a whole, absurd. I think the song is an amazing tribute. Just the "Beef Barley" line itself, even knowing the context, makes me giggle as the harmonies enter.

I for one have always liked Beef Barley, but it is overplayed a bit. Love CSR too and would like to hear more Frankly Po Zest - FPZ and LDZ were two of the first mp3s I downloaded off the web when discovering the band, so they have a special place.

However, the one song I can never get enough of is Drunk Monk Bar- gotta love that guitar riff.

I third that thought, Beef Barley and Phaddy are way overplayed.  They should play these songs about 1/6 as much as they do, and spend the extra time playing good songs that they\'ve forgotten about such as Cosmic Spaceway Rhyme, Kote, Frankly Po Zest, Spunk, Garcian Fishbowl, Flower Punk, and King Kong to name a few.  Beef and Phaddy are good tunes and there have been some fantastic Beef jams, but there\'s something about the playfulness of these tunes that I\'ve never been entirely comfortable with.  And they\'re overplayed.

Also want to put Hush as one of my favorite covers.  What happened to this song??  Haven\'t heard them play it in a while...

Disliked Originals (not bad songs!): Phatty Boom Batty, Puppetry (like the jamming, can\'t stand the singing!), Beef Barley, Food For Thought

Worst Cover:  Scarlet Begonias...heard an awful version on a live CD

I have to disagree w/ ya Origen. There are a few GD tunes that i would love to hear Tim play. Birdsong for one. I do not think enough Talented players cover GD. I know alot of bands cover a song or two(it seems a prerequisite to being a "jamband") but these seem to be the same songs and the players usually chunk it. Tim would do justice to any # of GD tunes. If Sugar Mag showed up out of a PB jam I would dare you not to boogie!

Best originals: LDZ, Tribal Funk, Attraction to Shade Ditty, Bulquebus, Drunk Monk, Wild Pack of Asscracks, Eschers Etchings I and II, Rufus, Taboo or Not Taboot, SPUNK!

Worst Originals: Beef Barley, GBFBITS, Cosmic Spaceway Rhyme

(problem is with lyrics only; PB can easily salvage these songs via a killer jam, and they usually do)  I didn\'t like the studio version of No Glove, but I recently heard it live in Pennsylvania and it rocked out.

Best Covers: Other One, Help!>Slipknot

Worst covers: any Grateful Dead besides Other One/ Help!>Slip.  I like GD just as much as the next guy but Dead cover as a whole is generic and overplayed.

WHAAAAT??!!! pb have played Gong? This I\'ve just got to hear - one of my fave "new" bands playing one of my fave "old" bands.

Personally, my songs include : (getting ready to be shot down)

Best Original: Attraction to Shade or Frankly Po Zest

Worst Original: Cosmic Spaceway Rhyme sometimes gets on my nerves a bit if the singing is off, though I usually enjoy the music side of it.

Best Cover: Legend of a Mind

Worst Original Song: Phaddy

Worst Cover: Nothing really springs to mind

But then again, I\'m British so what would I know?!!!

I just realized this thread sucks!!! PB can do no wrong. Every song they write is Tops. Every cover they play they make their own. You may not like a certain song @ a certain show but come on now **** happens. Y\'all r just JADED.

How about a thread about overplayed songs. No we will just have a bunch of Beef Barley and GBFBITS posts, forget it.

Yeah, I know... I have had this argument with the wah on countless occasions... I know that many people like it, but I tend to think that\'s because it\'s just completely different than the rest of what they play.  To me, it just too ________.  Cheesey, soft, cliche, slow, thoughtful (although not really, IMO), beatles-y.... choose your word... It\'s just not what I want to hear when PB is on the stage.

Best o.g\'s:Frankley Po Zest, Bequebus, Beef Barley, LDZ, attraction to shade, Gladys,The chase, Taboo or not Taboot, Phaddy boom, no glove, this list could go on and on cause all their songs have some special meaning (cheesy....I know) for me I.E bring certain memories to me.

Worst o.g\'s: vermont song is kind of......shall we say, not very original at all.  Cosmic spaceway kind of gets me until they get to the part where jam out.  I think thats it.

Best covers:  Sir Psycho Sexy, needle and the damage done was cool when I saw them, as was Peace Frog.  Have not heard tons of their covers so thats it for me.

Worst Cover: Deffinetly have to agree that YEM is not my fav when they do it.  Although they pull the composed part off damn well (hittin more right notes then Trey does most of the time) it just seems a little.........stale?

PB KICKS ASS so go gitchu 1!!!!

favorite cover: Inca Roads (if it\'s ever played), Echidna\'s Arf (of you), Needle and the Damage Done (adrian\'s solo at FF5)

DREW>>>>>  Um I guess PB plays in my opinion, a lot of generic tunes.... Seeing Tim\'s CD collection many a times, I can say he has the potential to play nothing but covers that wet your panties.....

These are in no particular order (though the songs I listed first are the songs I thought of first, so I probably feel stronger about them being the best/worst)

Five Best Originals: Mooboo\'s Voodoo (Episode 2), Puppetry, Lit, Funky Bill\'s Circus Cliche, Escher\'s Etchings

Five Worst Originals: Dig, Bugs, No Glove No Love, May Fly Disarray, Cut Me Some Slack

ALMOST THERE

Best Originals: Pretty much anything that I didn\'t list under "Worst Originals" aside from "Beer Jubilee"

Best Covers: Rockin\' in the Free World, Fire

Yes, I know, it\'s in the gray area.  I already went over this in the covers thread.

If it doesn\'t count, I\'ll go with Lit as worst original.  Most annoying, anyways.

OK gang, we\'ve beaten the "best song" thing to death on the group before, but it\'s been a while.  I\'m throwing in worst song nominees to keep it interesting.  What are their best and worst original and cover?

Best original: Escher\'s Etchings
Worst original: Ahhh...the Name is Breakfast Baby
Best Cover: Echidna\'s Arf (Of You)
Worst Cover: Bouree
