I remember "Ronnie" riding over on his bicycle to see Tim when he was, what, 13? What were they up to? They were up to playing guitars, Ron learning the bass from scratch, a great run with some kick ass bands , i.e: "Fear of Fire", "Magic", "Mokijam", "Psychedelic Breakfast", "The Breakfast", not to mention numerous side projects. I wish Ron, Lisa, and baby all the best!

im not trying to be negative in any way because i REALLY hope that everything works out in the end and i can continue to go see the breakfast for years to come, but when bands lose 2 of their original members it usually does not end well, especially for one still trying to make their mark. im hoping that everything will be fine but we very well could be witnessing the end of the line for this great band, i got my fingers crossed that this is not so

Yeah I can\'t express how happy I am that I decided to go to FF9 last minute. I feel a greater sense of closure with Ron because of it. It was a big show and I\'ll always remember it as the last time I saw TB with Ron.

nice post dave.  i cant really imagine what its like to see a band play 300 times with the same bass player every time, and then suddenly he\'s not there anymore.  Im lucky enough to have seen the breakfast in all 3 of its forms so far even though ive only been to 6 shows.  I look forward to the 4th stage with much anticipation of more good things to come.  I will be at 2 more shows before ron leaves for good, and i know they will be instant classics.

i\'ve been putting off writing this, whatever it\'s gonna end up being, but it\'s about time i did it.. not sure what will come of it, but here we go.

i had a little while to think about and prepare for this news, or something like it. still, that has not made it one bit easier. i don\'t even think it\'s really hit me yet, and it probably won\'t fully do so until the last note is played in the wee hours in the morning on January 1st, 2008.

last thursday at the wheel house was an absolutely surreal experience, and the evening turned out to be a rollercoaster of emotions for me. it was depressing from the start - 11 people in the room as the band takes the stage does not put you in the best of moods. however, the band was soon on their way to playing what was easily one of their top 5 shows of 2007, and i left the wheel house with my face hurting from smiling so much. mike, adrian, and i headed to the casino, and all seemed right with the world.

we were pretty close to foxwoods when adrian broke the news about ron. talk about having the wind taken out of your sails. i swear i heard the noise mine and mike\'s jaws made as they hit the floor. it was an awful feeling, and definitely NOT the kind of mood you want to walk into the casino with. winning money helped subside the pain that night, but it was right back there when i woke up the next day.

i woke up and started working on the wheel house show, and i lost it a little bit. there were just so many GREAT moments in that show, it was hard to not let it get to me. when i listened back to the When The Levee Breaks > Hard Luck Harry segue, the tears started to flow. "say bye to a good guy" killed me, and that\'s when i put the quote up here under my name thingy.

it\'s hard to believe that this era is coming to an end. sure, the band will continue, and i\'m sure they\'ll be great. i really have no reason to not believe that. but as has been said several times in this thread, it\'s just gonna be different. i\'m not going to get into any sort of argument as to whether ron is a core member of this band or not, because quite frankly, there is no argument. ron, tim, and adrian have been playing together for more than half of their lives on this earth, and there is a connection there that just doesn\'t get picked up on overnight. and also, anyone who thinks that ron is *just* a bass player/vocalist to this band is VERY mistaken.

i give ron all the respect in the world for making this decision. many people don\'t realize that this is one of the hardest decisions he\'s ever had to make in his life. it is truly something that is going to change his entire life, and a lot of people don\'t have the guts to make decisions like that.

a lot of people will say the timing sucks - hey, i don\'t disagree. as wolf said, the band is playing the best they\'ve ever played RIGHT NOW. i\'m sure that didn\'t make this thing any easier for ron, but let\'s face it, there would never be a GOOD time for this. it was gonna suck no matter what.

ron, thank you. i don\'t think i need to tell you how big a part of my life this band has been, and you are an enormous part of that. it will never be the same without you, but i love you and know that you\'re gonna be a fantastic teacher and father.

people, now more than ever, this band needs your support. get out to these remaining shows in 2007 and give ron a proper send off. and come right back out in 2008 to see the new breakfast. welcome the new bass player aboard, and try to remember that it\'s not gonna work overnight. the transition is gonna take some time, so stick it out, and i\'m sure great things will eventually come from it.

After a slight hiatus from thebreakfast.info I found out that Ron is leaving last night. Worst news ever. Ronnie is such a part of the Breakfast\'s sound and dynamic. I can\'t believe it. Honestly I don\'t know what kind of direction the Breakfast is going to go in. I\'m frankly kind of stunned. But I guess good luck Ronnie in the future with the kid and fam and whatnot but damn, breakin\' our hearts over here. Breakfast=changed forever post 12/31/07 :-(

Well, it has taken me a few days to work myself up for this post.  This is the hardest post I\'ve ever had to make.  There are no words or units of measure available to express what Ron means to The Breakfast, to me, and to any ser fan.  Ron epitomizes what The Breakfast has always stood for: great music, perseverance, and respect for the fans.  His playing and singing have come SO far.  Tim and Adrian have been musicians since childhood and had a big head start on Ron.  As a friend of Tim and Adrian, Ron wanted to play music with them so he pulled a Miles Davis and spent a whole summer locked in his room learning the bass.  He was dedicated to the cause before there was a cause to be dedicated to.  He has rocketed ahead with the bass to catch up to a level where he can be the backbone supporting natural-born madmen Tim and Adrian.  In addition, his vocals have come just as far.  I remember the moment it really hit me: It was 3 or 4 years ago at a show at Cafe 9, and it was the first time I saw them play Karn Evil, and I stood there in shock thinking "Oh my god, Ron is belting this song right now!  It\'s like there\'s a whole new member of the band!" This is life-inspiring stuff right here.  We should all be so dedicated in our pursuits.

Ron is the spiritual leader of the band; a role more subtle but no less important than Tim\'s role of vocal leader and frontman.  That will be the hardest thing of all to replace.

The toughest part is the timing of it all.  Of course there is no good time for something like this to happen.  But I think just about everyone reading this understands that The Breakfast is peaking right now.  It has never been better.  If you are reading this and going to shows lately, you are living...neigh...you are making the greatest era in Breakfast history.  Of this fact there is no debate.  I know I like to get on here sometimes and talk about great shows of the past.  I probably do it more than anybody.  Hey, who doesn\'t like to reminisce about good old times once in a while?  But outside of a few scattered great shows, previous years overall have nothing on The Breakfast in 2007.  This is the best it has ever been.  So if you have any opportunity, get yourself to these last five shows in 2007 before things change.  I will see you at the last three.                

I support my friend and brother 100% in his new life, doing the noble work of teaching and supporting his family with Lisa.  That\'s as respectable as it gets.  

Good luck Ron.  Love you bro.  Looking forward to hanging out with you in the audience.

ron was my instant favorite after seeing him first time in albuquerque in \'04 and chatting with him after the show. i\'m always a sucker for the bass, and i was ragin him on in the front row, and it made me happy to see him lovin\' it. someone mentioned the facial expressions when he\'s rippin it up; yeah that did it for me.

 No I will not STFU. I have every right to deal with this how I see fit. Just because I am more concerned with the band as a whole does not lessen how I feel about Ron leaving. Just because I do not think Ron is the second coming of Bass Players as you all do does not make my feelings or opinions any less valid.

When I first saw this band I thought Ron was not even that great( and this has been agreed upon by others here) but could hold his own. I never thought that about the other 3 in the band.

Ron over the years has proven to me and anyone else listening that he deserves to be on the same stage as Tim and Adrian but he can be replaced without a really drastic change and that is not disrespectful just honest.

I personally think Matt is a shining example of hard work. Simply put, he can read sheet music and pull of some extremely hard stuff in a short amount of time and is able to learn a song on a ride to a show, but his rhythm is nowhere near as sound as the other three guys. I put Matt into that category, an incredibly hard worker that has made the very most of his average to maybe above-average talent.

Do I think they could find a replacement and move on strong? Absolutely. But it has been less than 24 hours and there are NO guarantees. I do worry about their future. I\'ll be excited and full of anticipation when a new bass player steps on stage. I will be there fully supporting The Breakfast as always. But until then I worry, because I can\'t help it, and because Ron is an excellent bass player and, in my **** opinion, very important to the sound of this band both musically and vocally.

I have had time to digest this possibility and just because I am moving on does not mean I think everyone else should be able to do so as easily. honestly, i think a lot of you need to back the **** off of leith.  think everyone\'s gotten into this habit of having a kneejerk reaction that whatever leith says is dick and meant to be dick.  everyone\'s upset that ron is leaving the band, and we\'re on an internet message board which means that people are going to talk about their opinions and thoughts and ****.  inevitably some opinions and thoughts won\'t align with other opinions and thoughts.  this doesn\'t mean we need to start ganging up on each other.

i\'ve had sort of a b\'fast tribute day today, listening to all the studio albums in progression and to a few live shows as well... and if anyone is ready to dismiss ron\'s talent as a bassist, you\'re all wet.  being a (mediocre) bassist myself, i listen to the bassists\' contributions a little more closely than your average listener and ronnie tears the roof off the sucka!  from the more delicate songs (\'? and the mind\', \'vera street\', etc.) to the funky (\'score\', \'may fly disarray\', \'gravity\', etc.) and the intense rockers (\'doughboy\', \'intension\', etc.)... RONNIE KNOCKS THAT **** OUT!!!  the parts just mesh so nicely with adrian\'s parts and compliment tim & jordan quite well.  his style is also very different from most bassists of the "jam" scene, so i don\'t how easily finding a replacement will go as their style is bound to be markedly different.

anyway, enough of that ranting.  i just wanted to say \'thanks\' to ron for some of the most memorable moments of the last 7 years of my life.  i\'ll always look back on the 80+ shows i\'ve seen and remember the good times i\'ve had with the \'good time boys\'.

that said, i\'ll always look forward to the breakfast coming around and i\'ll never stop supporting the band no matter what the lineup.  stay strong, fellas.

thanks man, im pretty humble about my musical knowledge, but i have been a musician my whole life so i do know a lot about fundamentals that are normally overlooked, like this example, especially in the rhythm section, since i am a drummer and piano player.

I really hope this band doesn\'t become a "revolving-door" for musicians... it\'d be great to have them take some time and carefully choose the next bassist - one that can work well with the group.  Otherwise, we\'ll be saying goodbye to yet another musician from the Breakfast at some future point.  Losing Jordan and now Ron  = :(

Yeah well you have to understand then also I was concerned about the music. Jordan played keys and the loss of an integral part of music written for 4 players was HUGE!

I was also more of a friend to Jordan as I explained in a prior post not so with Ron.

I also have more faith now that Tim and Adrian do not want to go through the rough time they did when Jordan left and have taken measures to assure that the transition to a new Bass player is not nearly as horrible.

I\'m sorry, but without Ron, this is not the same band.  Tim, Adrian and Matt are talented and I think that they should find a bass player and continue making music, but in no way is this the same band.  The core has always been Tim, Ron and Adrian and will continue to be that for me.  Half of the original band is gone, if/when they find another bass player, it will no longer Psychedelic Breakfast/The Breakfast for me.  I\'m sure that the music will continue to be great, but I\'ll give another example (Guns N Roses).  Axl had one or two of the original guys with him at different points in the band\'s career, but without Slash and the rest of the band, it\'s not Guns N Roses.  Without Ron, it\'s not Psychedelic Breakfast/The Breakfast, period!

SO my perspective is coming from a strictly musical sense. He will be missed but his stage presence just began to grow in my mind so I will miss nothing there and musically I listen to Tim and Matt more so...

Do not think I am not devastated by this news. It sucks on many levels but from what I can tell the band will be just fine. Dobs would not post he is back and not going anywhere for awhile if the band did not have things well in hand.

I believe Ron has the natural talent as well. And learning from Tim and Adrian/ playing with them for all these years has brought out that natural talent. You don\'t have to go to college for music if you learn with those cats.

I agree about the not disbanding part, but you gota be nuts to think a bass players can just fill his shoes. Ron-we all love you and Lisa, and it will not be the same without you up there. Anyone who has the WTF attitude just doesn\'t have a clue. The sacrifices you made to accomplish what you have are enormous, and we thank you for it. I think of what PB and the Breakfast have meant to me, and it is hard to put into words. Yes the music is epic, but it is so much more. Like Freddie has said: you guys have no idea how really important you are in the lives of so many.

I\'m glad you and Lisa will still be around, and I sincerely wish you and your soon to be bigger family the best. I know it will all be good.

ron- you will be missed!!  i will never forget the time when you gave me **** about my "black" ernie shirt during the burlington 4/20/06 run (which to this day i never wear anymore b/c i\'m embarrassed).  but besides that, you are such an amazing, talented bass player and i have enjoyed watching you lay down the groove and funk your heart out with the band.  congratulations on fatherhood, i wish you nothing but the best to you and lisa and your new family.  you\'re going to be an awesome teacher- you are already fantastic in captivating your audience, i know you will do the same with students.  here\'s to you mr. spears!!

First off - Ron, best of luck with your teaching career and congratulation to you and Lisa on your upcoming bundle of joy.

Secondy - Tim, Adrian and Ron were the heart of the band.  How can you say that Ron was not part of that heart?  They have been together molding their band through multiple incarnations: Psychedelic Breakfast, The Breakfast, Mokijam, Tribal Funk Afflication and many more.  The three of the them were what made this music special.  

Do I think that the remaining members should disband, no, but do I think that they should continue on as The Breakfast, I\'m not so sure that would be the right move.  If they continue on as The Breakfast, it would be as wrong as Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend touring as The Who.

Save -  Best of luck! You know you have everyones full support. You\'ll be a GREAT father and teacher. I\'m looking forward to play dates with our lil tikes!! The 6 years we were able to work together were truley 6 of the best of years of my life! Thanks for the memories.

The band has their work cut out in finding anyone who fill your shoes.. or at least stand in them for a few sets. Hopefully they will find the right guy to do the job.

Obviously the jamband masses have never fully grabbed a hold and embraced this project or they\'d probably generate enogh dough to keep everyone together. Maybe this change will force the band to to do some re arranging and lots of new song writing and just maybe it will give a chance for a new beginning.

This is where everyones fandom comes in. They need your support more than ever. The songs and the music are still being played by the guy who wrote them and I\'m sure who ever theey hire to play bass will THUMP fo sho!

Sad news indeed. Ron, I have an enormous amount of respect you as a musician and more importantly, aperson. Best of luck to you in your new endeavors, there is no doubt in my mind you will succeed at both your career and family. My best wishes to you and Lisa. You may no longer play bass in The Breakfast after NYE, but that spot on stage will always be Save Side fo\' Life, no matter who is up there.

Unfortunately I am only able to attend the Toad\'s show on the 29th, but if everyone who owns one of the Save shirts we had made way-back-when could wear it that night and NYE, I think that would be an awesome way to say thank you to Ron for all he has done for the band and us as fans.

i agree with rens comments about how much of a talent ron was.  i always was blown away by rons ability to hit the 1st note of a measure perfectly on time while adrian was going nuts on some tension buildup.  its REALLY REALLY difficult to do this as a bass player.  finding someone else who can do it this well will be tough.

Ronnie, thanks for all the great music buddy!  I give you all the respect in the world for making such an incredibly difficult decision.  There may be other bass players, but they will never fill your shoes....nor will they have such cool shoes!

Well I guess that just about says it all.  The music that Ron and the rest of the band made will forever be in my head and heart.  Those guys make me feel things I\'ve never felt before when seeing and listening to music.   I\'m acting like it\'s all over, maybe in a way it really is.  

    Ron, Tim and Adrian are the the obvious core considering how hard they ripped without even having a keyboard player, which is even more obvious with the Good Time Boys.  Back in the day, I used to play Psychedelic Breakfast to this older friend of a friend who was a drummer and way into jazz and r & b, his comments were always the same, "Yeah the drummer and guitar player are unreal but, without that dude thumpin\' out the rhythm, it\'s just a bunch of noise, to be able to keep up with them is NOT easy."  

     What will the Breakfast be like in \'08?  Who knows.  This is something that cannot be forced or rushed for any reason.  Will it be the same?  Will it sound good?  Huge shoes and personality to fill.  To say that Tim and Adrian are the "real" core of the band is stupid, I don\'t really care who I offend, but it is.  And it just isn\'t true.  No band is worth **** without a tight rhythm section, bottom line.  The interplay between these three guys is something you just can\'t go out and find right away, or maybe not at all.  So i guess we\'ll all have to wait and see what the new year will bring...

     I wish that I could find that crazy red-headed, long-haired Ken guy who used to live upstairs from that house I hung out at in New Haven in \'98-\'99, and thank him from the bottom of my heart.  Every weekend he was like, "dude, you totally have to come see my friend Tim\'s band, it\'s like nothing you\'ve ever seen!"  It actually got to be annoying.  I avoided him by going in the back door sometimes.  One night he dragged us to Toad on 3/12/99, and I was speechless.  I was way into DBB, Phish, LOS, and Gov\'t Mule at the time, and the they just knocked me out.  Wish I\'d listened to him earlier.  Who knew it would be for me what it ended up being....

     Ron, I sincerely hope you find happiness and fulfillment through all that you do and with your soon to be little family.  Good luck with EVERYTHING!   I\'ll never forget how approachable you guys were and are, that says a lot, and that is why I came back over and over and over...and over.

Now that the news has been announced, I wanted to take the opportunity to use this forum to personally thank everyone who has supported The Breakfast throughout the years. I also wanted to say a few things that I couldn\'t include in the "formal" press release.

Since the beginning of the band I have held the same aspirations as the rest of the band, to tour continuously and do everything we could to succeed. We did it, and we did the hell out of it. However, since Jordan left the band I have had mixed feelings as to what I really desired out of the band and life. We continued to tour and play as many shows as we could, but I no longer had that same drive as I once had. Coming to terms with that was the hard part. I didn?t want to admit to myself that I wasn\'t entirely satisfied by touring with The Breakfast. It was something I had done since I was 18 and a change of that magnitude is not easy to deal with. Although I was still giving 100% every night, something inside me felt incomplete. I just wasn\'t happy being on the road. I would find that many times on tour I was only satisfied when I was on stage. The band and I talked about things we could do to mutually appease both parties but we just couldn\'t reconcile the desires. They still wanted to tour, more than we had been, and I wanted to just focus on the north east. In the end we both decided that since the band still wanted to tour nationally then I should leave my post as bass player. It was a difficult decision and thoroughly considered. The conclusion is that I don\'t have the mental, emotional, or physical stamina to tour nationally anymore at our level.

As for the support and encouragement of the fans, I cannot say thank you enough to all the people who came to the shows and bought our merchandise. Some of you have been there from the early incarnations of The Breakfast and some of you are new, but each fan is so important to this band and your support is sincerely appreciated. The fans are truly the hardest thing for me to leave, and I will be forever grateful to all those who love The Breakfast as much as I do. There are many people who have poured their personal efforts into this band throughout the years and spent countless hours driving to shows, talking about the band, promoting, helping, and pushing us in every way possible. The dedication of many of the fans was something that kept me focused and on track during some of my doubtful times. However, I don\'t want this to sound as if I won\'t be around anymore. That\'s not the case. I still love the music The Breakfast makes and I will be at as many shows as I can be. Only this time I\'ll be on the other end experiencing what many of you have been experiencing for a long time. Finally, I would like to thank my wife Lisa for all her support throughout the years and the many rough spots that this band has seen. She has never given up on the dreams of The Breakfast or me. She is a remarkable woman and that\'s why I love her.

This won\'t be the last you see of me. I\'ll be at the shows, performing in different side projects with Tim and Adrian (how could I quit playing with them cold turkey?), and participating in various musical endeavors that I hope you\'ll all support.

I felt that PB died when Jordan left but not The Breakfast. They have put too much time and effort into and under The Breakfast moniker. It would really be shooting themselves in the feet to change their name yet again. They would not recover from the loss of visibility in promoter/booking areas to even bother continuing.

^That\'s pretty much how I feel.
 Tim and Adrian are the heart of the band no doubt about it just as I feel Trey and Fishman were the heart of Phish.
 Ron was a great Bass Player for this band because of how and who he learned the Bass from. He took those lessons and def. made a space for himself well earned on the same stage as Tim and Adrian but there is no doubt in my mind that a completely competent if not better replacement can and will be found.

the news of ron\'s departure fills me with sadness on so many levels.... i just can\'t imagine what it would be like to see "the breakfast" without ron holding strong on the bass... such a great musician and an even better person... always keeps it real... obviously all i can do is wish ron and his amazingly beautiful wife all the best as they embark on the journey of parenthood...

and in a way, i do see your point, kindm... do tim, adrian and matt find a new player and embark on their own new beginning? it\'s a tough question. in many ways, the name "the breakfast" is getting to be better known and so it would be tough to start from scratch. but on the other hand, if the new group that forms offers up a different style of playing than we currently know, it may be benefitial to have people come to a show without as many preconceived notions as they may bring to a "breakfast" show... definitely a topic to be debated, with merits on both sides.... as is the case when anything changes in life, it will be interesting to see how this all unfolds.... personally, i\'m looking forward to the unknown and have high hopes for good things to come...

Good luck RON!!!!  Me and my family have only been around the Breakfast for a little more then a year but we\'re so happy we were able to experience the band with you holding down the bottom and always with the fullest, funkiest, most groovalicious playing possible.  Good luck with the family...as one door closes another incredible one is opening.

my stomache dropped the second i logged on and saw a paragraph on the front page of .info.  before i read anything i had a feeling this was going to be what it said after talking to some people at the last show about how ron was expecting a baby and, knowing his personality, might not continue with the band afterwards.

i dont know guys, i just dont know.  ron was a huge part of the band and he knew every song and added a ton to the live show.  its going to be very tough to fill his shoes.

ron, good luck with the baby, you rocked thousands of people in the 9 years you played with these guys.  missed you will be...


i really think one final ron show should be played at toads after NYE, and heavily promoted, especially since i already have tickets to moe on NYE

Ron was the first member of The (Psychedelic) Breakfast I met, at some Wormtown Festival years and years ago.  We shared some New Castles in front of the sound board :(.  I will miss hearing him play.  Oh well :( :(

It?s with regret that The Breakfast have to announce the departure of our longtime bassist and friend Ron Spears. Ron has been with the band since its inception in 1998 and has been playing with Tim and Adrian since 1993. Ron and his wife are expecting a baby in Spring of 2008 and Ronny will be pursuing a career in teaching.

?After much soul searching over the past year I have come to the decision that I can no longer commit to the goals of The Breakfast. I have spent the last 9 years fully committed to the success and touring of The Breakfast; however, I feel that my aspirations have changed, as they sometimes do in life, and it is now time for me to follow a different path. This has been one of the most difficult decisions I have ever made. Being a part of this band has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life, full of memories and familiarity that I cannot soon forget. I wish my friends and band mates nothing but success in their musical journeys.? - Ron Spears

Tim says, ?We are sad to lose a musical brother on stage and we wish Ron and his family all the best with everything. He is an inspiration to us all and we will keep the music going in honor of his spirit and hard work. We are currently auditioning bass players and plan to keep touring in 2008.?

Ron will be finishing the year out with five shows left on the calendar. Gigs include this Saturday?s Asbury Park appearance at The Saint, River Street in Wilkes-Barre, Middle East in Boston, Toad?s Place in New Haven, and New Year?s Eve at the Electric Company in Utica, NY.
