I was going to say the same thing, honestly, then I thought, do I even like being a part of the crowd?

I think Paul Ryan (FrankZappa) has some.  Be sure to check out these pics from the last Butterfield show 3/30/01 here (http://www.thebreakfast.info/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=524).  There was a Wrestlemania at setbreak, complete with DeBlock (Yoda) dressed as Hulk Hogan.  I have captioned many of the photos, be sure to read.

haha yeah i already saw them, they look pretty classic, and the captions are halarious.  so did anyone from .info live in butterfield?  who lived in baker?

even though ive only been to 5 shows, and only since 2005, i still would like to comment on how much fun i had at that red square show a few months ago.  that was the reason i joined this message board and became much more active in seeing the band.  everyone was dancin like crazy that night, myself included...i was also so hammered, but still i had a friggin blast at that show.

Wolfman and I lived in Baker.  My sister lived in Butterfield from 1997 - 2001.  Wolfman was on the Butterfield meal program and ate there with the "family".  Not sure if anyone else associated with UMass is registered here.

Yeah, I was as close as you could get without living there.  I worked in the kitchen and ate all my meals there with those kids, and I helped book the shows there.  Just didn\'t sleep there.  There are no Butterfielders on .info.  The only one who surfaces anymore is Teddy Torres, he still makes it to key shows but doesn\'t do .info.  (He was Hugh Heffner at FF9.)

Anyhow, who else has some crazy or huge crowds to talk about?  I want to hear more stories!

uh yes there is read the post you just quoted by Al again.

Please be nice leith, I am pouring my heart and soul into this thread.  I\'m not sure what you mean, as Al\'s sister is not on .info.  How about some more show stories?

Uh yeah she is. Duh.

Wow, GREAT link there!  Everything is true.  Holy crap, that\'s a very good history.  My only criticism is that it was clearly written by someone from the early 90\'s and he glossed over the Fall 99-Spring 01 period.  I could give a 12-page version of that era.  Stop me.  The Baker Quad show (5/5/01) was but a few days after Tom Degnan fell off the roof, and The Breakfast dedicated Gladys Pimp to him at the show.  The history of Butterfield is much, much bigger than the history of The Breakfast so it makes sense that PB is not mentioned in the article, but it\'s things like that dedication and even the song Honey Butter that let you know that The Breakfast were firmly intertwined with late Butterfield history and Butterfield is a major part of Breakfast history.

They should make a movie about this dorm, it would be the best movie of all time.  better than animal house cause it would be a true story.

Best crowds I\'ve ever seen:
6. Camp Creek 7/27/01

Biggest crowds I\'ve ever seen (not counting festivals, per the rules):

1.  Deuce CD release at Toad\'s, 6/1/01.  To the best of my knowledge it is the only Toad\'s sellout.  You couldn\'t move.  We also did over $1,500 in merch that night, that has to be a record.
The thing everyone forgets about the cd release party for deuce was that most of the people there WERE NOT THERE FOR PSYCHEDELIC BREAKFAST. Oysterhead had played their one show in new orleans and were now announcing that they were going on tour. The tour was going to have two pre-tour shows, the first of which was going to be at toads place in the begining of september. 6/1/01, in a brilliant marketing move was not only the night of the breakfasts cd release party, but it was also the night the tickets went on sale for this, the first show of oysterhead after the new orleans show. As you stood in the croud, there was a line that snaked from the front door back to the bar and then back to the front door again along the back wall which was all the people waiting for tickets. They got to watch the show while waiting in line, but most of them probably would not have otherwise been there, and a good majority of them left as soon as they got their oysterhead tickets.

Oysterhead never played toads place. 9/11 happened and the show was scheduled for only a few days after that, to be followed the next night in nyc. Both pre-tour shows were scrapped.

Don\'t get me wrong, there were a lot of people getting down in line and they probably made some fans, but there were just as many that were completely ignoring the band on stage.

again, wrong show.

oysterhead tickets went on sale at the 2001-08-23 pb toad\'s place show, not at the 2001-06-01 deuce cd release party.

Sportin\' a Wolfstock shirt there champ?

Well hopefully your 20-30 pages will be partially recited as part of TB\'s future documentary, in the section titled "The Early Psychedelic Days", when the fanbase has grown immensely and live footage is taken exclusively from their recent sell-out NYE show at the Roseland Ballroom. Ya\' know those scenes where the band is all leaning forward with their elbows on their knees, slight smerk, staring at the ground ahead, waiting to chime in with their funny bits every once in awhile, while the scene\'s story-teller continues through the interruptions getting more excited and the director cuts just as everyone busts a gut. Every rock-doc has \'em.

Man, I hate to ask, but where did all these kids go? What happened to prevent the crowds from gradually INCREASING in the future?

Al pretty much took care of this one, but I\'ll throw my abridged version in.  One day I\'ll sit down and write 20 pages about this but not for this post:

UMass 99-02 was a very special circumstance that existed in a certain time and place.  A lot of things had to go right, and a lot of fortunate circumstances had to come together at the same time for it to exist, and they did.    It was incredible but not sustainable.

The biggest factor was a MAJOR hipppie clique of about 250 kids who were all friends, mostly from Baker dorm.  I know this may seem impossible, but you have to take my word for it.  This was State U networking of the highest order.  You could count on ALL of these kids at the same shows and parties every time, and Psychedelic Breakfast was our band.  It was great, but it couldn\'t last forever.  Kids go their separate ways after college.  Everyone went for equal parts the music and for each other, and when you took the "each other" out of the equation, most slowly fell off the Breakfast landscape.

The second biggest factor was the closing of Butterfield.  (I made a classic post about this at the old yahoo group that you can read here (http://www.thebreakfast.info/forum/showthread.php?t=535&highlight=butterfield+era+end).)  As the band moved to the clubs you started to get a division of UMass fans: those who had been to Butterfield shows, and those who hadn\'t.  Even though the early Northampton club shows were equally epic and constant sellouts, there was no way anyone who hadn\'t been in Butterfield could get on board at the same level of ferocity.

The third factor is the fact that the band was getting bigger and touring wider and you couldn\'t go see them 3 nights a week all the time like we were doing in 00-01.

And the last factor I have to take a hit on.  Looking back I feel like I could have done a better job networking with some of the big buzzkids a couple of years younger than me and having them smoothly take over handling Breakfast grassroots and parties and stuff after I left.  There was nothing I could do to overcome the three factors above, the scene was never going to last at the level it was at.  But if I had done a better job passing the torch the dropoff could have been slower and wouldn\'t have bottomed out at the point that it did.

Like I said, I\'ve got 20-30 pages in me about the rise and fall of this era, but I feel like I owe a brief answer right now.

Beardslee Halloween show 05 there were like 700 paid that night and it was a total **** show

I just did a little research, that IS the Lion\'s Den

Wow. I am really surprised I didn\'t pick up on that.

I thought the pics looked like a much nicer Lion\'s Den and know CEG books the place but figured it was a new venue.

Weird because on the map it just didn\'t look right. Oh well. from the pictures I hope the renovated the place. I might give it another chance. And don\'t have to worry to much about taping bands there :)

Man, I hate to ask, but where did all these kids go?

I\'ll try to make sense of PB\'s fanbase dissolving somewhat in the UMass area as best I can.

During the 1999-2001 years, the band was playing Butterfield several times a year along with the Iron Horse, Fire + Water Cafe (acoustic) and other venues in Amherst and Northampton.  It literally seemed like the band was playing in our backyard every few weeks.  Most of the kids seeing the Breakfast lived in Butterfield and other dorms that were within 1,000 feet.  Hence, the fanbase was closely connected and it was easy to promote shows when all you had to do was flyer a few dorms that were next to each other.  Almost everyone on the area of campus Wolfman and I lived in knew the band and hundreds were fans.  There was such a high concentration of PB fans in such a small area that UMass quickly became their "home away from home".   This phenomenon wasn\'t exclusive to the Breakfast scene.  Sometimes the whole dorm Wolfman and I lived in would end up at the same party, only to continue late night back in the building together.  It was a very tight bunch.

Butterfield was a crazy dorm where anything could happen. The school finally decided to put the kibosh on the madness and converted it into a freshman dorm at the end of the 2001 school year (after a kid fell from the roof trying to capture the jolly roger pirate flag flapping on the roof).  The days of madness right inside the dorms were over, forcing the fanbase off campus to more subdued digs at The Iron Horse, Pearl St Nightclub, Springdale Turn Hall etc.  After the 2001 school year, many of the student fans living on campus moved off campus; the **** fans were scattered in different towns around the Amherst area.  The band still played killer shows to sizable and appreciative crowds (with post-show parties at Wolfman\'s house regularly), but it was harder to mobilize that many people who no longer shared the same bathrooms, dining facilities, frisbee lawns etc..  Keep in mind that these days I speak of preceded .info.  If we had .info back then to keep everyone connected, perhaps many would have never lost touch with the band.  Once many of the students graduated, many fans were gone from the area for good and lost touch all together.

Some of the fans were as fanatical about the band as some of you are, driving to other states on work or school nights.  It\'s a shame that they are not currently active in the scene, but I doubt they ever got sick of what the band was doing.  They made the same fantasy setlists and talked about the Breakfast\'s future being so bright the quartet needed to wear shades :exaggeration: etc.  They just moved away and lost touch.  Seriously, what the hell happened to people like Mike Bonanno?

I knew that date didn\'t feel right.  It\'s coming back to me now.  It was just a couple of weeks after Baker Quad, and Baker Quad at the time it happened was the undisputed biggest show ever.  Kids were fiending for another show after Baker Quad and this was the first chance.  At Toad\'s, on top of an excellent hometown and CT crowd, Umass/Northampton sent about 300 kids and put the crowd into stratospheric size territory.  School had just gotten out and Baker sent easily half the freakin dorm along with a big group from Butterfield and all of the associated friends from around New England also fresh out of school.  Huge show.

Man, I hate to ask, but where did all these kids go? What happened to prevent the crowds from gradually INCREASING in the future?

It seems like this must have been an extremely hopeful and exciting time in PB/TB\'s history, only to slowly deflate thereafter.

Best crowds I\'ve ever seen:

2.  Butterfield 11/19/99 Read about it here  (http://www.thebreakfast.info/modules.php?name=Reviews&file=viewarticle&op=newarticle&id=148)

I know exactly what you mean about these party/no supervision/no rules shows.  some of the best shows my band has ever played were at these wild frat parties in buffalo where we would either play in a basement or in a living room of a big house that was jam packed with ape-like drunk kids who were dancing/screaming/fighting.  the energy at those types of shows cannot be duplicated.

Quote from: Wolfman;167954
5. Puppet House 2005, both shows.

I always hear about the puppethouse shows, and ive listened to some of them...is this place a bar, and where?

Quote from: Wolfman;167954
6. Camp Creek 7/27/01

Including festivals, was this the biggest crowd they\'ve ever played to?

Quote from: Wolfman;167954

Biggest crowds I\'ve ever seen (not counting festivals, per the rules):

1.  Deuce CD release at Toad\'s, 5/23/02.  To the best of my knowledge it is the only Toad\'s sellout.  You couldn\'t move.  We also did over $1,500 in merch that night, that has to be a record.

How many people does toad\'s fit, about?

Quote from: Wolfman;167954
2.  Baker Quad 5/5/01 Outdoor 360 degree stage, about 15-20 deep for 270 degrees and 5 deep behind the stage.  500-700 people.

Where is Baker\'s Quad?

Getting thread back on track here, it\'s too good to sidetrack.

To catch up on inqueries:

-Puppet House is not a bar.  It\'s a very small theater with removable seating whose principal function is puppet shows.  The shows were BYOB.
-Baker Quad is the quad in front of Baker dorm at UMass, about 100 yards from Butterfield dorm.
-I think Toad\'s is 850-900, Ellis can confirm the number.
-I\'m changing the date on Deuce CD release, I knew that date didn\'t feel right
-Tobacco Road was an alltime classic venue and lives on in Breakfast infamy on the Dead But Not Forgotten Venues list alongside Callahan\'s, Hawk\'s Nest, Butterfield and others.  We used to rent a bus when they played there and have everyone gather in East Haven and PARTY HARD on the bus the whole way down and back.  The shows ran until absolutely whenever, 5am or later usually.  I remember emerging into broad daylight from some shows that broke the 5 hour mark...no other club has pushed it like that since.  The phrase "NO SLEEPING ONLY DRINKING!" came from these trips and as best I can remember this was the first ever Breakfast scene-ism.  And Pec recalled a great show, 12/31/02...wild night for sure.  That one should be on my list.  I was at TR all night, it was packed and insane even before the post-Phish crowd rolled in.  But management there got very bizarre at the last show in \'03 and they closed shortly after.  For one, they blew a lot of money on an expensive new light rig but had no employee who knew how to run it and they wouldn\'t let us run it either, so the band just looked like crap all night with 10 grand worth of lights doing nothing.  And more notoriously, they prohibited all taping and instead taped the show themselves and demanded $50 from the band to get the recording.  OOF.  They did a lot of great stuff for us, but they had it coming after that.
-I think the rules in the first post were meant to exclude festivals for biggest crowd but not best crowd.  If your best crowd experience was at a festival we should know about it!

1.  Deuce CD release at Toad\'s, 5/23/02.

deuce cd release @ toad\'s was 06/01/01, just fyi.

Huge show.

yup 214 sullivan st

so I assume someone else bought it, remodeled put in a new sound system and changed the name?

so technically the breakfast is playing there but not really because it doesn\'t change hands until the new year.  i.e. still 3 opening acts ala lions den. hopefully new management will be down with one or no opening band and two long sets of breakfast

anyway I think I wanna go to the upcoming show there. i have always liked the venue and it looks a lot nicer now.

Especially as a new venue...if the breakfast gets their foot in the door early while the hype about it is hot and plays there regularly and own that place, place a bunch of legendary sold out shows there and graduate to the next level in nyc.

"Sullivan Hall is a 345 capacity music and event venue located in Greenwich Village in downtown Manhattan near the New York University community. We are big music fans who frequent shows and are friends with many musicians and artist representatives. We listened to what they had to say about the type of venue they’d like to see in New York City. We created an ideal venue for both performers and fans alike. We put a state of the art sound and lighting system, and the space has near perfect sight lines. Even on a sold out show, you will have an intimate experience with your favorite performers at Sullivan Hall.    "

Biggest crowd I\'ve ever seen them play for was House Of Blues - Chicago 4/28/06, sold out. Unfortunately, they were opening for The Wailers and the crowd was 99.742% there for The Wailers. I at least **** got down because the sound quality was A++, ellis-d tore the lights a new ****, and it was my first TL&TG > OE experience which was siiiiiick willy.

After the show Jordan had the smiling shakes. I asked him, laughing, if he was alright, and he came back with, "Dude we\'ve never played on a stage like that with that many people. It was crazy. It felt great." Then Gavin walked up within two seconds and said, "I heard a bunch of kids in the crowd yelling \'too many notes!\'" and then Jordan stopped smiling. A bittersweet night.

Best atmosphere I\'ve been in (next to my only East Side show -- FF9) was the Rathskeller at Madison without a doubt. A free show where maybe a couple hundred showed up and the place was fuckin\' jumpin\'. I even saw a few chicks makin out with each other right in front of the stage during the colossal second set. That show still sits atop all the rest for me, musically especially.

don\'t even get me started about how phish\'s ticketing system went down the tubes post-hiatus.

No kidding. I mail ordered for 2 tix to each of the Phoenix, San Diego, Mountain View (x2) and Gorge (x2) shows in 2003. They processed my mail order twice and sent me 4 tix to each show (in two seperate packeges of 2 tix each). They wouldn\'t refund my money afterwards when I told them they had made a mistake. I let it go figuring I would just sell/trade them for goodies when I was out West. I couldn\'t sell those tix for **** as crowd numbers were low to start off that tour. I had to eat so much money because of it.

The days of actually mailing them a \'mail order\' was so much better.

Sorry for the thread jack.

had to pay extra for my phish ticket, since my (and 5 family members) mail order did not make the cut. don\'t even get me started about how phish\'s ticketing system went down the tubes post-hiatus. *sigh* those tickets should have been automatic for anyone who\'d mail ordered for 75+ shows in the past.

FF1 - The music was awesome and it was catered
4/1/00 - I enjoyed all Butterfield shows; I wasn\'t so much a fan on the Baker Quad show.
8/12/00 - Although there weren\'t hundreds of people, the band scheduled after them didn\'t want to play after they heard the first half of their set.  That\'s why an hour slot turned into a 3+ hour first set and a 2 hour midnight second set.
11/25/01 - This was a fun show

You\'re right, everyone was way into it both nights and Iron Horse was dope.  But FF9 is in a league of its own.  FF9 set a new precedent for :holyshit: moments ever at a Breakfast show.  Think Phish busting out Dark Side on 11/2/98 etc.... We\'re talking about unprecedented shock and energy and admiration from everyone there regardless of experience level with the band.

The fact that they were not played in a club and instead in a dorm basement with no supervision allowed for total freedom for both the band and the crowd.  Also, most of the kids lived in Butterfield or nearby dorms so no one had to drive home.

You hit the nail on the head, Al.  These rare "free-for-all" shows with no rules or inhibitions pack a certain energy that cannot be matched.  When the person at the door asks if you\'d like to be dosed on the way in, and kidz are walking through the crowd before the show handing out pot brownies, and the kegs are free and sitting 20 feet from the stage, and the band gets to play as long as they freakin want... it\'s a COLOSSAL energy boost.  You can\'t touch this in a club.  Yasgur\'s farm and Thumper\'s barn (both upstate NY) are the only other venues I can remember that totally achieved this.  Powder Hollow Barn in Enfield came pretty close for a while but had other things working against it.  Small festivals also approach this point to varying degrees.  It\'s a huge, huge factor when you can get it.

People, if you see a show that you think might achieve "free-for-all" status, drive to whatever godforsaken farm it\'s on in the middle of nowhere and go.

Nectars (NYE & 4/20)

7. Many different shows from Toad\'s and Porter\'s and Stone Church come to mind, also Tobacco Road bus trip shows, as well as FF6, FF7, and FF8.  Too close to differentiate but all VERY high energy.

I\'m probably forgetting a couple but all of those are clear winners.  The important thing is that the frequency of high-energy crowds is much, much higher today than it was 4+ years ago.

3.  Whatever the biggest Webster show was.  I think we\'ve probably done over 400 in there.

After that it\'s a whole mishmash of shows in the 250-400 range that I can\'t discern.

Good thread.
