I just flew home to Burlington today from San Diego because all schools (including SDSU) have been shut down atleast through the end of this week. Last I heard more than a million people have been evacuated. But the winds are dying down - when I left this morning at 6 am it was really smokey because the air is just sitting still downtown. It\'s gross - raining ash. There are more fires now and random ones just keep starting. They say they probably won\'t have them under control until this weekend - its supposed to rain somewhere in the mountains i guess - Anyway...I\'m glad I\'m outa there and honestly, this was the absolute perfect time for this to happen (for me anyway...) I got to escape the nasty smoke to come home and it just so happens its this weekend : ) ...Freakout here I come! <---so excited.
nice timing indeed, i hope they get it under control soon

that sucks!!!! i hope they have a safe place to stay and they got some of there stuff out which prompts this next thread
if your house was threatened to burn down, what are the 3 things (possessions you would take with you that would fit in the car.
-
i just got word that my cousins home on lake arrowhead was burned to the ground, and her other home in san diego is close to the flames, good god.

I know - he is actually really reassuring...last night I watched two different fires in opposite directions raging for hours - I think I was out there from around 2-4 am...a bunch of drunk college kids watching crazy fires crawl towards us (they are further away that they look..) It was a pretty eerie feeling...a lot of people were crying and freakin out - it was crazy. But anyway, we\'re still okay down here....let\'s see how it goes..

Well this morning we have Blue Skies above w/ a faint smell of smoke. You can see the smoke lines out in the areas where the blazes are, but I am thinking we are totally safe now. The wind has died so I doubt we will get embers blown over to us now. My buddy Tim thinks his parents may have lost their home but we will not know until they let people back into the area. It\'s not on the burnt house list so that is good.
I feel real good that this will be taken care of. The Govenator actually put me at ease with his talk and he\'s all over the place here. I can\'t believe I actually am impressed with this guy right now.

So the footage on the news last night. Scary stuff.
-
the Govenator just addressed the Public.
Be assured that the Govenator will save the day!!!! ;)

...I feel like I\'m in a burning paradise.
e-****-gads, man.
california is hostile.
the news from there has officially scared the bejesus out of me.
be safe.

Yikes... hope it works out ok for you...

I go to San Diego State University and its pretty shitty outside - basically everytime I have gone outside my eyes and throat start burning - the campus is closed atleast today and tomorrow like a lot of other colleges in SD.
One of my roomates\' old neighborhoods was evacuated this morning - by Poway - and I guess at least 30 homes have been destroyed in that neighborhood alone. There are at least 6 fires raging throughout the county. Apparently these are the worst fires ever in CA because of the huge area they cover and they say they probably won\'t have the fires under control until Wedneday or even into Thursday. It\'s so bad this year because we have only gotten 2 1/2 inches of rain in all year whereas the average rainfall is 8 inches by now.
Anyway, I just thought I would let you in on all the info I know just in case any of you were wondering about details... the fires seem to still be moving towards the city and the coast but they\'re not too close as of now. Apparently Bush has promised government aid and we\'ll see how it goes this time...I just don\'t know where we will evacuate to if it does reach closer to the coast because we are surrounded on all sides...I hope they have a plan!
I\'m definitely wishing I was back in Vermont right now...I feel like I\'m in a burning paradise.

Holy ****. I know two people who recently moved to San Diego. I hope their home is alright...
Glad you\'re ok Leith.

that sucks.
I remember hearing a report on ABC news or 20/20 last year about a man who faxed the fax machine in his house from his office that read, God Bless This House, his home was the only one that didn\'t burn down. Not that I am saying GOD watches over you like that but it was interesting to hear none-the-less.
How far is the blaze from the Leith abode?
Well it\'s about 15-20 miles away from the north but like 25-30 miles away down in the south east. But the wind is totally blowing the other way now and we have 2 major freeways that form a fireblock basically all around us.
We have not been informed of impending evac and do not expect to be. :fingers crossed:
Thanks though. I am making my flight Wed. night wildfires or not.
Wow! Just heard that every hotel room in San Diego is filled and the airport has opened one of the terminals as a place for passengers coming into S.D. that have no where to go to due to evacuated areas and loss of homes.
So far an estimate of 250,000 people have been evacuated and the Govenator just addressed the Public.
This is kinda crazy.

sucks but nothing no one doesn\'t expect to happen. this happens yearly doesn\'t it or every couple of months?
Thus the thread title. It does suck though.
indeed. just feel bad that SW Cali is always on fire.
Are most of these man started or is it just from the dry weather and heat?
Well the Cedar Fire 4 years ago was some idiot but so far this one seems natural.
Just saw one of our Local Newsmen Larry Himmel report from his own home burning down! It was rather intense and heart wrenching to watch. Damn.

that sucks man, glad your safe. so much for cleaning up the air quality around there
the smog is coming down like snow flakes.....
-
Major bummer

So far the fires are not threatening anywhere near our home but it is pretty shitty outside as the ash is covering a majority of the County. I guess the Malibu fire up in L.A. got all the way to the ocean but so far it is not that bad here. The fire is moving west though but I highly doubt we will have to evacuate.
Damn glad I\'m leaving for a few days soon though.
