anyone know how many originals tunes the breakfast actually has?  I think phish had a little over 200

i am starting to get sentimental thinking about the boys so much

ya, but how many are truly originals and not obscure covers

They had about 170+ Original songs not including spontaneous jams that got labeled as songs or the crazy amount of covers they did.

200+ originals and 400+ covers and specific notable \'jams\'= 674 total \'songs\' played, 277 being only one timers

hard to know how many of that 400 is jams that aren\'t really songs

but i\'d say that spacey\'s guess of around 500 total actual songs performed in concert is probably pretty close, split about 50/50 between covers and originals

haters can say whatever you want about phish and trey but the guy was flat out GENIUS composer

Phish wrote 244 original compositions but only performed 226. With covers that number increases closer to 500.

Currently in the 70\'s of songs that they have played according to the lyrics section. I was actually counting last night but was unsure if the list had been updated recently.

basically i was just asking if there are songs in TB\'s repitoire that a. are rarely played but a real nice treat for die-hard fans when it is played, and b. used to be played, but havent been played for a long time and fans would like to hear it come back.  The harpua and destiny unbound references were just to give people an idea of what i was talking about (because most of us can relate to phish).  im pretty sure this has already been answered for me.

I am glad, however, that people have compared other phish songs to breakfast songs...because i am a 99/100 in my phish song knowledge, but probably a 5/100 in my breakfast song knowledge...so it is cool to see comparisons to get an idea of TB\'s song catalog.

Chalkdust and Surreal???  Are you ser guy???  Chalkdust although played alot was a phenomenal song that I personally saw lift venues in the air spin them around and replace them just before the show was over...all Surreal Radio does is clear a room.;)

That comment wasn\'t geared towards anyone in particular, it just seems that when I suggested in another thread that covering Phish for the FF, I got a lot of gruff for it from Phish fans.

All I was saying is that comparing Phish to The Breakfast is like comparing Apples to Oranges, it just doesn\'t work (in my opinion).

I await the comments back, but why are we comparing The Breakfast to Phish again?

Not sure if that was meant for me but I wasn\'t trying to start a debate as to which songs, when compared to Phish, were better. I was just giving DS673488 a guideline to some of the Breakfast material. If he is a fan of You Enjoy Myself, the he should check out The Grand Scheme Of Things. If he like\'s Moma Dance then he will probably like May Fly Disarray, and so on. Instead of just jumping into the Breakfast catalogue and not knowing what to expect he can kind of pick and choose where to get started.

I await the comments back, but why are we comparing The Breakfast to Phish again?  This is like comparing Bon Jovi songs to Springsteen songs because they\'re both from New Jersey.

They are two totally different types of music, the common thread being that they play jammed out song and are considered a jamband.  I listen to Phish a lot, but would list to a PB/Breakfast show over them any day.  Then again, I listen to Springsteen, Pink Floyd, Pearl Jam, The Doors and Brian Wilson a lot.  There is no one band that rules all of music for me.

from what i know of Psygn, it reminds me of Free (released relatively late in career, easy to sing along with/solid chords but no fancy writing, generally played often, sometimes jammed really long and somtimes stuck to the progression in a short jam)

boozetravlr, thanks for those comparisons, helps me get a better idea of the breakfast\'s song database

Harpua blows. I\'d much rather see Phish play good music instead of tell a pointless story. Destiny Unbound is more hype than it is a good song.

As far as rarity goes, Episode 3 (Awakening), Garcian Fishbowl, Tribal Funk Affliction and Sundance probably fit that bill. Songs that most people want to hear but are only played once in a while.

Some Phish - Breakfast comparisons:
Moma Dance - May Fly Disarray
You Enjoy Myself - The Grand Scheme Of Things
David Bowie - Mooboo\'s Voodoo (Episode 2)
Reba - Rufus
Bouncing Around The Room - Tricky Ways
Down With Disease - Over Exsposure
Run Like An Antelope - Gladys Pimp And Kangaroos With Me
Mike\'s [Song > Hydrogen > Weekapaug] Groove - Escher\'s Etchings (1-4)
Split Open And Melt - Buquebus
Tweezer - Hard Luck Harry
Waste - Good Things
Chalkdust Torture - Surreal Radio
Wolfman\'s Brother - Great Big Fiery Ball In The Sky

I didn\'t know Sundance was supposedly that rare.. its definitely been in active rotation a few times since I\'ve known the band.

I\'m thinking along the lines of Question Mark and the Mind.

In fact in my live Breakfast mp3 collection there are like 30 Sundances and only 6 Question Mark and the Mind ;)

sundance = harpua? I don\'t think so. Phish had MANY MANY songs that were rarely played and highly hoped for and Harpua was at the very TOP of that list. Harpua was something you always hoped for at every show. It was VERY SPECIAL. Every one was a unique version. If they played harpua the show was an instant classic. And they pretty much only played it at very epic shows or very special ocassions. Sundance is a great tune and I am always glad to hear it but it\'s no where near the significance of getting a harpua.

I know a lot of people who saw well over 100 phish shows and never got a harpua. SHow me one breakfast fan who has seen over 100 shows and never saw a sundance or a garcian.

Untill the post hiatus destiny I knew people who had seen over 250+ shows and never seen a destiny.

There is nothing in breakfast land that even remotely compares to either of these songs. end of discussion.

given the question, you have to make it all relative. Sundance is probably the most rare, epic tune that the band has.

i would also say TGSOT = YEM.

you can compare NGNL to DU in that they\'re both shitty songs, but not as far as their rareness goes.

Tribal Funk Affliction for Harpua, maybe more of a Fluffhead though.

the equivalent of Fluffhead would be a song they haven\'t played for a lot of years and are too scared to bust out again because they know they would flub the **** out of it possibly even forgetting what to do all together mid song so they just play trickyways instead

I dont think anything in the breakfast caalog can compare to either of these songs. destiny was shelved for longer than the breakfast has even been around, it was only played a few dozen times in over 14 years since it\'s debut, people were insane about trying to get them to play it with banners, chants, constant requests, discussions, write ups, etc. nothing in breakfast land even comes close to this

sundance = harpua? I don\'t think so. Phish had MANY MANY songs that were rarely played and highly hoped for and Harpua was at the very TOP of that list. Also, does The Breakfast have a "Destiny Unbound," i.e. a song that they used to play way back in the day, but they havent played it in a long time and is also highly requested.
