am i the only dickhead that doesnt understand what any of this means??
sorry

Yes.

hahahaha

It means the company Dave currently works for was purchased by Oracle. When 1 company buys another company there is uncertainty to what will become of the employees. That is a huge stressor. The thought being that layoffs will follow and people will be out looking for jobs. It could also mean opportunity if they keep folks around etc or opportunity to look for a new job.  Either way it is stress that I do not wish on anyone. Especially when wife / kids / animals are involved

that sucks dave..
i really think that everything will be okay for you considering your experience/ability. you know more about computers or any kind of technology than anyone else i know. you are a very personable and intelligent guy who would be an asset to any company. i am sure that you will be fine and who knows, maybe you will find a position with less of a commute!

That\'s awful, Dave.  But keep your chin up.  You have experience in an industry that is always growing.  I am sure you will move on to bigger and better things.  Still--not a great way to begin a new month.  You\'re in my prayers.....

oh and a p.s. - i think Robyn mentioned teaching...thats always a great avenue.  I don\'t know if you have your masters yet, but if you do.....local community colleges are always looking for professors...in every field....and all you need is a masters.  mark has a PT job teaching CJ at Post in Waterbury.   Just a thought.

thanks paul, and everyone.. right now i just need to ride this thing out and see what happens. in the meantime, i\'ll be working on the resume, studying, and getting some certs. then hopefully a decent severance package to tie me over until the next stop (assuming, of course, that i will indeed be out of a job)...

still a big :?: at this point..

Settle down people!!  You\'re acting like they\'ll be locking the hyperion doors tomorrow.  I\'ve witnessed 3 mergers:
Merger 1:  Telecomm Infrastructure giant ADC gobbles up a little software company called NewNet.  Took them 3 years to start consolidating.  Luckily, I jumped ship after 2.
Merger 2:  Mariner Healthcare is purchased by a puppet company called SavaSeniorCare.  No layoffs.
Merger 3:  UnitedHealthGroup eats Oxford Healthcare alive.  Now in this case there have been layoffs, but only in the HR & Marketing depts, and it took them a full year to get there.

Dave, you\'re a technerd... always the last to go.

I only skimmed that article... but didn\'t it say there\'s very little overlap between the two companies?

ps - you may want to burn everything on your hard drive to disc... while you still have a chance.

to think, all these years I thought Dave worked for a N.U.R.V. clone. . .

I work in the commissions department of UnitedHealthCare.  Kind of funny how confusing things get after mergers. Oxford still has its commissions department and its so confusing as to where brokers are to send their commissions issues.  The bigger these companies get the more cloudy everything gets.

Despite the majority\'s panic and concern posted in here, I\'m sticking with my optimistic gut instinct on this one.

However, I\'m glad to see you\'re hedging the risk of a lengthy period of unemployment with an updated resume and additional skills.

update --

still don\'t know what\'s going on, but i will within a week or 2 (finally!).

what i know:

offer letters are going out via email sometime in the next 2 weeks. most likely next friday or the friday after.

people will either get an offer for a permanent position, an offer for a \'transitional job\', or a \'sorry chip\'.

the \'sorry chips\' will most likely be on until 6/29, and receive a severance package after that.

supposedly, they\'re giving jobs to 92% of us, with only about 7% of those being transitional jobs.

while 92% is great odds, i\'ve played enough poker to NOT allow it to get my hopes up. i\'ve come to a point right now where i\'m ready to accept whatever happens, and make the most of it. i\'m a lot more positive than i was when this was first announced, and i\'ve really been looking at this from every angle. if i\'m jobless on july 1st, it\'s not the end of the world, and ****, i\'ll probably end up having one of the best summers i\'ve had in a long time. :)
