I just got an e-mail today from my buddy up in NH. He was the one that had his house flooded last year. Thankfully his house was lifted 8 feet over the summer. He\'s not even done rebuilding yet and they had 4 feet of water come through again.

congrats jocelyn, for making back to your abode.:thumbsup:

the wind sucked the most for me. apparently i have a rotted tree behind my cottage and the wind decided to rip a branch off the tree and ram it, vertically, into my roof! then the water proceeded to pour through the attic, through an electrical socket in the ceiling of my bedroom and onto the majority of the carpet in there. had the firemen out here and everything and they couldn\'t do diddley for me. said i needed a lumberman. not to mention the power outage and having to worry about keeping my poor iguana warm enough throughout the night. at least i didn\'t have school the next day cause i only had maybe 2 hours of sleep. but whatever, it was fixed (for the most part) the next day. still have a hole in my attic and no tiles for the drop ceiling in my bedroom, but at least the limb is gone and some shingles were put on the roof. just wish i took a picture of it before they removed the branch cause it did kinda look cool sticking straight up and all. :shrug:

ugh, what a mess.

Whenever I lose power here (pretty often, it\'s a cottage in NH, kind of to be expected) it is really stressful... I\'m always worried about keepinbg the reptiles warm. So I know what a miserable night you must have had...

I always take extreme weather as a reminder to choose my future homesite wisely:

Places to avoid include:

-low-lying areas that are prone to floods

-sites located right alongside a river or ocean with no elevation to buffer from floods and hurricanes/tsunamis

-steep hillsides that are prone to landslides during extremely soggy ground conditions

-rural or hilly places in CA that are prone to brush fires during the dry season.

No doubt!! That\'s one of the reasons I chose my house. It sits on top of nothing but gravel. Never get any water in the basement, except for the little that seeps in through the old as hell bilco door.

Though it isn\'t considered weather, I must admit that I currently live directly on the Hayward fault, frequently cited by geophysicists as long overdue for a major quake. The cute little term someone coined for it is "locked and loaded", as it is due for some slippage.

no offense, but you\'re insane for moving there!! granted their predictions of earthquakes isn\'t really great, but still...i would be a nervous wreck living in a fault zone. i\'m taking a geology course right now and we talked about the California earthquake that caused all the fires, and how the fires were caused by broken gas lines, but they couldn\'t do anything about it because the water lines were also broken...so many deaths...so sad. although nature is wonderful to observe. still wouldn\'t want to live there..just visit

thanks to all for your thoughts. i did a pretty good job keeping sebastiane warm. i wrapped her in a fleece blanket, put her on her bed and shoved her in front of the oven (which was jacked up to 500 degrees). then i boiled some water put it in my nalgene bottle and laid it next to her on top of the blanket...she had no idea what was going on anyways..i swear she could sleep through anything! haha...my funny little lizard.

Meh, New York city sits on top of a major fault line as well. Predictions are that in 10-30 years there will be a devastating earthquake that will level most of the city. My personal prediction, just to note it, is 12 years. **** happens everywhere. You can\'t live your life worrying about the "what ifs"!!

A major earthquake occurring here is a risk that I have assumed and I will not be surprised the day it occurs (let\'s hope one doesn\'t happen soon). Same can be said about South Floridians living in the path of hurricanes....and so on.

However, in any region, you can often mitigate the risks by wisely choosing your homesite.

Another thunderstorm. It\'s beautiful all day while I\'m working, and everyday when I\'m about to get out...

So we got really slammed by this ice storm. Giant old trees down everywhere, no power obviously. I talked to a policeman yesterday who said we would be without power for 3 days minimum, probably more like a week. I guess all of the main power lines coming from Milford, NH, are completely destroyed, and the little ones aren\'t in much better shape.

I don\'t mind this at home really. It\'s kind of fun. I have a wood stove, so I can keep warm and cook food. But this really sucks at the barn. We have 25 horses who go through a LOT of water, and now that the power\'s out the well doesn\'t work. We have gone through all of the water on the farm now. So now we have to lug water by bucket from a brook that\'s through the woods and down a hill. I cannot tell you how much this sucks.
