from my experiences, the east haven school system is a very good one, until the high school. i\'ve said it in a thread here and there, and I think some of the other EHHS alum can vouch, but they didn\'t even teach us what a thesis was until senior year (if you were lucky) and even that was only a week or so to what a \'thesis statement\' was. other bad parts of the high school were teachers who were on the verge of retirement so didn\'t give a damn (Ms. Desenti, et al), which was pretty cool when you were a student, but sucked ass when you got to college (for me anwyay, then again I started going downhill freshman year). my EH school history:
POPS (Parents of Pre Schoolers; taught by my mother for quite some time, but no longer exists, though I may make her restart it since she is losing her job June 29 and she always loved it)
K-5: D.C. Moore (basically the other half of Momauguin)
6: D.C. Moore > Tuttle> St. Vincents> D.C. Moore (don\'t ask)
7-8: JMMS
9-12: EHHS
basically, Staven is fine, then send whoever to Prep, ND, or Lyman Hall
As for New Haven, I only know about what I hear from my buddy\'s wife (she\'s a kindergarten teacher there), and it\'s bad news.
Guilford\'s one room school house was awesome when I went there...I hear they\'ve progressed a little bit since then though...

Heeeeey, what about a girl? You listed two all boy schools. Honestly, I think ND seems to produce a strange mixture. You\'re either straight edge or off the deep end. I think its because the element of Waste Haven is there.

was that back in the day with the old school marm, all ages in the same classroom writing with ink and a feather........
lele believe it or not you 2 are sort of my inspiration as far as success stories and the EH school system

lets say for the record that im just discussing schools ... but my kids are both girls so those prep schools are not an option, and will be kindergarten and 6th grade. my mom teaches 4th @ ferrara, so i know ALL (like 10) teachers there and i love that school, plus ive lived in that area and it\'s nice quiet family friendly etc. i know the HS has gotten "worse" (what hasnt?) in recent years but its still miles above, say, hillhouse (although new haven has career, etc magnets). what i dont get is why everyone complains about the middle school - its old the kids suck (all of a sudden???), theres fights theres gangs theres drugs etc etc etc ... Shay will only have a year in ferrara if thats where we go and then i\'ve got to figure something else out cuz the middle school sucks that bad?
freespirit ... i am impressed - i would love to hear your story sometime you want to share (thats a lot of schools!)
i LOVE milford but i really want to be somewhere between guilford\'s 1-room schoolhouse and new haven geographically.
so if any more staven kids or teachers have insight i\'m still listening.

We were too poor for ink...had to use blood.

your a hellavuh good sport Todd, i hope i can still maintain my humor when i get as old as you

i\'m already to much of a jaded cynic
Hi Melanie!
I went to East Haven public schools my entire life:
Deer Run (in Foxon): I LOVED going to school there. I still see some of the teachers every once in a while and they remember me and my entire family.
East Haven Middle School (now Joseph Melillo Middle School)
East Haven High School
I have no idea how they rate with test scores but I think that East Haven is what you make of it. My sister and I were both very good students and both graduated at the top of our class with honors. I do have to admit that I slacked off alot and didn\'t try very hard. I wonder if I would have been as successful of a student if I attended a different school? My sister and I both felt pretty well prepared for college, where we both graduated with high honors. Plenty of staveners go on to graduate from ivy league schools as well..
I\'m a nurse and work with a couple of RN\'s that went to private high schools and expensive colleges. We both make the same amount of money and have the same college degrees. The only difference is they have a ton of loans to pay back and I don\'t.
Although the East Haven school system worked for me I do think the high school allows a lot students to fall through the cracks. If your children are not exceptionally motivated students or fantastic atheletes you have to be really involved with their schooling to ensure they are getting the most out of it and are not left behind or forgotten about. I can go into plenty of horror stories about that.....

One all boys school. I purposely left out the "of ____" in ND, since ND Fairfield is coed.

try laurelton hall or sacred heart when they get old enough if you wanna go private. definitely stay out of all new haven high schools. branford is supposed to pretty good these days, and the new north haven high school is just enormous
or fantastic atheletes
lord only knows what the hell happened to my brother then.
