Walsh reminded me with his memories of Phish fests about how wonderful it used to be to be able to camp for a weekend w/ the Dead.
Camping @ The Frost in Palo Alto, Laguna Seca and Long Beach were the best.
The Frost had the forests and crisp air, Laguna Seca had the rolling hills, LB had the big sunken dirt lot right across from the Arena.
Nothing like puffing bowls right in front of a cop but he did not care as long as you were in the lot.
This was in the latter 80\'s mind you, a time when Pot was a really evil drug :lol:
Oh man touring w/ the Dead and not having to worry about a place to stay was the friggin\' best.

My only memeory of camping for the Grateful Dead was Highgate VT both years. spent several days camping in VT prior to and after the shows.
First year there was like the best week of my life. Santana -> GD ->VT Reggae festival.
They let us campout on a Wednesday for the VT reggae fest which started the following Staurday. There was like 5 or 6 tents in the whole place for the first few days. We had a huge party on the top of the hill where our tent was. everyone who was there came and hung out, brought something to the party so it was a nice mellow free for all.
Ill never forget having to get off the highway and take the back roads becasue driving at 55mph was way too much of a challenge after the several nights of having fun. ending up just getting off the highway and somehow was on the exact road the fest was on. really great week. think about it all the time.
The GD show was OK but the adventure was what it was all about
ok, so I never got the chance to camp/tour with the Dead or Phish, but I\'m definitely looking forward to some campouts with the Breakfast this summer!!!!

One of my favorites was Merriweather Post Pavillion. They let us camp in the parking lots and surrounding woods. They were smart then and would rather have us camp than have 4,000+ cars with tripped out captains on the roads

Oh yeah Red Rocks used to be awesome also. Had to camp kind of off site but they always had ez access for the campers to make it up the hill.
Yeah its amazing that they stopped camping and let loose deadly drivers on acid and such. Real smart idea there GUYS!!!!!!!!
My best GD camping experience was at Watkins Glen, NY in Summer \'73. We got there about 3 days before the show and at that point there was maybe 200-300 people there already. Over the next few days we were at the center of a crowd that grew to supposedly 300,000. It was a tent city that stretched to the horizon in all directions.
Was that the famous Watkins Glen show?
I believe it was the Dead, ABB and the Band or something? During soundcheck each band tried to out do the other and the soundchecks were shows within themself.
Yup! That was the one. I didn\'t get to see the soundcheck. We didn\'t know it was happening that day and went swimming at Horseshoe (I think that was the name) Falls and went into town to get supplies. Due to the size of the crowd this turned into at least a 12 hour ordeal since they wouldn\'t let us drive back in and we had to leave the truck and walk several miles back in.
