Judging by his recent column, one might think so......

"6 p.m. (PT): We\'re coming to you live from the New and Improved Sports Guy Mansion! I\'m joined by my dogs Rufus and Dooze, a 20-ounce Diet Coke and a bag of sour cream Baked Lays. Five highlights from ABC\'s 30-minute pregame show:"

Bill is a classmate of mine from college.  He was a great writer for the school paper, and a great guy all around.
Just looking for peace.  Seriously.

I\'ve stopped reading Simmons\'s column. If I want to hear about how great the Red Sox/Patriots/Celtics are, I\'ll just read the appropriate thread on dotINFO.

He\'s actually been in a catatonic stupor since the super bowl and hasn\'t extolled the virtues of any boston team since.  In fact, in the 10 months since then he has written one Boston piece (Celtics championship) and everything else has been nationally focused.  You should get back on the train Drew, it won\'t hurt.

I know he\'s mentioned Phish, but I get the impression that his wife dabbled in a show or two but was never a "huge fan".

Whenever Bill mentions music, it\'s usually not-quite-mainstream rock like The Shins, Silversun Pickups, My Morning Jacket.  The official wolf line is 10:1 against that he\'s even heard of The Breakfast.

A lot of downtime at work has put Simmons back in the rotation for me. He makes me laugh but, like most of Page 2, his columns are maybe 60% sports-related at best.

My newest Simmons pet peeve is his mission to convince everybody that Bernard Pollard is the new Bin Laden, because his hit ended Tom Brady\'s season.

It was really an accident, I can\'t change what happened. I can\'t do anything but pray for him and hope he has a speedy recovery.
Sounds like a real menace to society.

the pop culture references have been a staple of his articles/mailbags for several years. you\'re just noticing this now? it\'s certainly not my favorite part of his writing (unless there is a clear sports connection (sports movies/books/analogies)), but i usually skip the survivor/90210/the hills stuff for his sports insight.

have you listened to his podcasts? he\'s had a couple really good ones with david stern and chris collinsworth. i suggest giving them a shot

i would put this a little closer to 100:1. he\'s in his late 30s, so i doubt he was big into the jamband scene over the last 10 years. plus he\'s been in LA for the last 5 years

Did I say 10:1?  You\'re right, I left a zero out.  The only reason it\'s even this low is the remote chance that Paul Ryan has access to him and got him to listen to The Breakfast.

And yeah, Drew\'s quote makes no sense "bill got lame this year when pop culture consumed his mail bags and articles".  Uh dude, he\'s been 66% sports 33% pop culture this year like every other year that he\'s been writing.  That\'s like saying The Breakfast got lame this year because they started going off on jams too much and didn\'t stick to just playing the songs.  Huh?
