whats a SSH tunnel, hope that answers your question.
lol. I figured as much
It is a way to do make encrypted connections between computers etc. They can be used to get around firewalls. for example.
you said that in your dorm at school you are behind a firewall and they block you from using BT. If you were to create an SSH tunnel to a remote computer that didn\'t have Bit torrent blocked you could use the ssh tunnel to "tunnel" the connection to your machine behind the firewall.
the big issue is wether or not someone is watching the network traffic. if you rant the bit torrent semi-slow and didnt leave your widow open all the time you might be able to hide that kind of traffic. The network admins might not notice. however the ssh tunnel might rasie some eyebrows so.......
You could also try asking someone if bittorrent is blocked (like your hepldesk or tech support person). Keep asking questions and give it an educational spin. I work at a college, and many times things get locked down, and all it takes is that the question gets asked politely and to the right person. It depends on the network manager, and the network infrastructure you have at the school.
An ssh tunnel transporting gigs of data may just get ur connection yanked. Check your user agreement before you do anything.
All I know is SBC blocks...what the hell is the ftp port? 21? they blocked it...one day i was setting up an ftp server real quick so someone could pull something off my machine and i had to change the port real quick cause it was blocked...
man who do you get your DSL from ?
I have 3.0Mbps / 768Kbps which is really 3360 / 864
Cable compnay tends to limit upstream capacity much more than DSL because you have to share the bandwidth on cable unlike DSL.
But it really comes down to who your provider is. I happen to be lucky in this area because I work for an ISP, but we as a company do not block ports, we allow our customers to run servers etc and we don\'t limit bandwidth what you pay for is what you get
Somehow missed this post earlier!
Have signed up with plus.net, who run an unlimited service. I even emailed them beforehand to confirm there were no limits. According to my Connection Manager proggy, I am connected at 288 up and 2272 down but am only averaging about 30 down and 15 up on well seeded torrents. Have contacted my isp now and also the Dime message board to cast the net wider for ideas.
yeah so i just updated my azureus (i have an imac) and im usually ok with torrent stuff. the torrents im trying to download (Timmy show and a radiohead show) just wont start. i need BT to start working..please someone help, thanks
