This may work in other states also, but it definitely works for CT residence:

Saw a commercial yesterday with Senator Dodd saying that we get a free credit report from all 3 credit companies as CT residence every year.
I did it this morning and it took a between 30 minutes and an hour. Transunion and equifax you can do right online and print out. The 3rd, experian, you have to mail away for, but go through the process and it gives you the forms, mailing address, etc. You can also get your fico score from either or both companies for an additional 6$ or so. However, just the report is completely free and can be done every year.

These are the addresses in the commercial. Go to the first one, select your state and start filling out forms. You\'ll need to know some basics about yourself like previous addresses, driver?s license #, social security number, etc, etc.

I don\'t know about credit reports for a residence, but residents can get them! ;) And I got all three online for free.

Every state has a law that one gets a free credit report every year.
The thing is and this is very important thus the caps.
EVERYTIME YOU APPLY FOR CREDIT OR RECIEVE A FREE CREDIT REPORT YOUR CREDIT SCORE GOES DOWN.
No matter the reason.
Worrying is like praying for something you don't want.

Not so in the case of getting your free report once a year. That is part of the new law.

I know for a fact that running your credit can make an impact but it also depends on what kind of hit it is. A soft hit will not damage your credit. All those promotional pieces of mail you get for a "pre-approved" credit card, they run your credit before they send you mail, most of the time. We run credit reports in work to get an insurance risk score and that is a "soft" hit but has no adverse impact of your actually score.
Love many, trust few and don\'t be late.

Hmmm So the law changed? I would be wary.

Well it depends on the service you use and the deal your Co. has made w/ the credit bureau. All those promotional pieces you speak of actually use a database from the bureaus that have everyone in groups 350-425 425-500 etc. So they mail according to group so your credit report is not actually being checked each time.

Either way it is very important to be aware of how your score can be changed.
