just wondering if any of you computer folks could help me out.  This weekend my cd-rom/burner just stopped reading any cd I put into it, and now it opens and closes by its self once and a while.  I\'m assuming it\'s shot and I need a new one, but is their any other explanation for this?

Sounds like a run of the mill demonic possession. Contact a Catholic priest at your first opportunity and don\'t listen to anything the cd-rom/burner orders you to do. Then trek over to newegg.com and buy yourself a new burner.

It might be a long shot but the burner might just need cleaned. If you have a cleaning cd give that a shot.

ok, so I was looking on that website and this stuff is cheaper than I thought so I\'m thinking about updating to a dvd burner and updating my ram.  I have 196? now.  how much more should I put in.  also, do they give directions on how to install this equipment?

if I wanted to format my hard drive and start fresh, could I install this equipment to put certain info on disc before I erase everything?

I would install all the above before reformating... DVD/RAM and all. This way you can back everything up on DVD\'s and it wont poke along (I\'m guessing you have 186 RAM not 196, but you may be right  )

Once everything is backed up give it a freshy and you should be good to go.

As far as RAM goes... Shove as much in as possible.

sounds good...thanks.

is their a way to tell if my computer can handle the upgrades?  also, for installing the ram, do I keep my old ram chip in my computer and also put the new one in or do i take the old one out first?

that\'s going to depend on your motherboard, age of your machine and what type of RAM it takes. I recommend surfing the net and reseaching your computer a little. You should be able to find everything you need (as long as it\'s not a homebuilt machine... then you\'ll need to tear it apart or speak to who put it together for you)

ok, here is a webpage I found with info about my computer.  The only thing I did to is was have an upgrade to 196mb ram and windows XP installed.

now this is a different language to me.  If I\'m reading this right, does this say I can upgrade to 512mb SDRAM and it will run faster.

Alright, just dump all the RAM you currenly have and buy two sticks of 256. This will max you out at 512. From there you\'ll be able to install you\'re DVD drive as well... and that\'s how the story\'s told. If you have any other questions I can try to help, but my mind is limited when it comes to hardware and stuff like that.

ok......so I ran into a few problems.  The parts I ordered came in, and when I put the ram into my computer, it won\'t boot up.  Anybody ever have this problem before?  The cd rom drive reads cds, but I tried to burn a cd and it gives me a error on the disc (i\'m assuming that since I can\'t install the new ram, my old ram is too slow for the new burner).

Also, I tried putting in my HP support recovery cd, and when I boot up my computer with disc 1 in it tells me I have an error and brings me to "fdisk" screen, which I\'ve never heard of before.  When I put in disc 3 while the computer is on and click on the "restore" file, it tells me that it can only be used with a HP computer, which I have.  So I guess it\'s telling me that I don\'t have a HP computer, but I do have one.  Anybody ever heard of something like this before?

Just thought I\'d ask before I pack up my new parts and send them back.  thanks
