Of course those racist
**** snubbed him.
If it wasn\'t for the money the Super Bowl brings that God forsaken state there would still be no MLK Jr. Day in Arizona.
I never got MLK day off until I was in college... I always thought that up until recently, school districts had the choice to take the day off or not...
That being said, I now have the urge to listen to some old-school public enemy...
I never got MLK day off until I was in college...
In Connecticut? Granted you\'re a bit older than I am, but I always got the day off and I live in Wallingford, the town that made national news for not giving its town employees a paid holiday on MLK Day.
(For the record, the true story here is that sometime in the 80s, the town employees chose another paid holiday over MLK Day. Then, in late 90s/early 2000s, they decided that it was racist to not have MLK Day off, while still refusing to give up another paid holiday. The media missed that part.)

In New Jersey... And I\'m only 6 years older than you... I think that it\'s because I grew up in a town where the African American population up until 1992 was 0.0%... The town leaders basically said, no black people, no day off... That being said we had Columbus Day off every year...
RI still gives VJ day off. for those of you Wikipedia deficient that\'s Victory Over Japan Day.....

I knew that you lived in Jersey now, but I know you were a Connecticut resident at some point.

This is the ignorance.
MLK was not about black people, he was about equality.
The celebration of that day is not about black people, it is about celebrating that humans are gettin smarter (slowly) and treating people equally.

I agree with you... I\'m just stating that that was the way it was done where I grew up... I don\'t agree with it, but that\'s the way it was...
The student interviews reminded me a lot of the Borat movie and the scene with the UT students.
How did ASU land Obama as commencement speaker? Did Napolitano pull some strings? The fact that they had him speak but would not give him a diploma is a good example of the duality of that state. Some folks are very conservative, some very liberal but most all of them don\'t like being told what to do. That was the real sticking point for a lot of people about the MLK holiday dispute. They felt they were being strong-armed into compliance with someone else\'s agenda. The same-sex marriage issue in California seems to have some parallels right now.
All that being said, I left Arizona as soon as I graduated college. Good old NAU, the headiest school in AZ.
thats where Mccain had his concession speech so i imagine from all the \'boo\'s to Obama\' you heard during that, that there are tons of hard core republicans. i dont know why he is speaking there. he\'s probably got some smooth joke he\'s working on for his speech to play the whole thing cool..
