New Haven (WTNH) - A man who allegedly had an elaborate marijuana grow operation at a New Haven apartment, including on the roof, appeared before a judge today.

34-year-old Michael Desbiens was busted with approximately $500,000 worth of pot, police say.

Tenants in the recently renovated Dwight Sweet apartment building knew there was always something different about the neighbor who drove the green Volkswagon. He seemed very attached to the roof.

"He said he\'s trying to do something for the air conditioning, get the fans, put the fan there, try to do stuff," said tenant Ravi Ramenami.

Police were informed marijuana looked like it was rooted in the shingles of the house. So narcotics detectives arrived quickly and soon found the oddly-placed discovery was the illegal drug.

"This is abnormal. It\'s been going on for awhile. There are 16 of them [on the roof], good two feet in length. Street value of that would be $48-$80,000," said Sgt. Ray Johannes of the New Haven Police Department.

But the "Miracle Grow" in the car, the white buckets that housed the plants, the reflectors that provided added sunlight, was just the beginning.

Upstairs in Desbiens\' apartment was more room dedicated to the growth of pot than there was living space. A hidden room with a bitter-sweet aroma, lit by heat lamps, had a complex irrigation system.

Prosecutors say they don\'t believe Desbiens actually lived in the apartment, rather he used it solely for the grow operation.

"It is half-a-million dollars less marijuana that is going to hit the streets of New Haven," said Officer Joe Avery of the New Haven Police Department.

Desbiens did not enter a plea today in court. Bail was set at $350,000 because of Desbiens\' prior drug convictions, as well as an outstanding drug-related warrant in California.

Seriously... Isn\'t it legal yet?!?! WHAT THE HELL\'S WRONG WITH A LITTLE GREEN PLANT?!?! Growing marijuana doesn\'t feel illegal, in fact it teaches responsibility, patience, how to care for living things you care about. Damn closed-minded people... now I\'m upset!

Damn I\'d like to know what strain yields an $80,000 crop per plant! Musta been growing Big Bud x F1 Imaginationland x Shanti\'s Super Cop Math Skunk. I\'ve yet to smoke this strain because it doesn\'t exist

Anyway the guy was just doing his part to convert CO2 > Oxygen for the health of the planet... I don\'t really see the problem here.

I got a guess. Personally I don\'t find ruining people\'s lives for growing cannabis a laughing matter at all. Granted this guy was practically asking for it... I mean has he ever heard of airplanes, helicopters, thermal imaging, energy meter monitoring, and cultural profiling?

Growing cannabis requires some serious planning and brains that apparently this dude lacked. As much as I\'d love to nurture a nice greenhouse full of Black Widow, Neville\'s Haze, Cinderalla 99, Orange Kush, Chem-Dawg, and Maui Wowie Skunk ... I\'m simply way the **** too lazy and would rather not go to jail. Nice dream anyway.

No way should this be illegal though. Or even legalized and regulated. It\'s a **** plant, let it grow freely, and breed it better.

on a side note.....todays weather can reak possible havoc on the OD\'ers. mold and powdery mildow can ruin months worth of work in very little time so keep a close eye on things, especially if the rain continues. constructing some kind of cover, like a camo tarp tied off to nearby trees pitched on a 30-45 degree angle has worked for afoaf. this is by far the weirdest season i\'ve seen in 15 years.

oh and apartment/house gardeners of CT (and elsewhere).....please use this incident as a "what not to do" when growing the cheeb.

you know whats been bugging me lately - kids drinking coffee and energy drinks like its going out of style. don\'t kids have enough energy as is? also lets continue feeding obesity in this
country through legal crappy fast food that not only harms us at our expense with our health, but financially through insurance costs, medical bills, suppression of local businesses, abuse of animals, blatant marketing brainwashing, and national rates of illness breaking new limits. yea america. we are really on track here.

also i would like to imprison every person that gets peaceful from weed for we need killers and the competitive edge that makes capitalism thrive and not complacency to rules, values, and the way of freedom that needs to lead this world into the promise land (heaven). more coffee, energy drinks, and alcohol. and pharmaceuticals. that should keep us (society) on track.

hahahahahahahahaha. that was fun to vent.

seriously - legalize marijuana. its worth it in the long run.
if it doesn\'t work we\'ll make it illegal again.
