Gravity is my hands-down Real Radio favorite with a midsection that epitomizes The Breakfast. It was a great jam song in its infancy, let alone now. But Buquebus earns the nod due to the few extra years of preposterous jams. My toughest vote so far.

most of the real radio tunes are getting the shaft, scheme excluded. is this just because they\'re new and folks are just gettin used to them, or are old school tunes just superior?

Yeah I think a lot of them are, and I really wish I could hear them on an album with the quality mix on Real Radio and the more mature playing the guys have now. Imagine if they  reissued Deuce with a better recording and their playing/singing as it is now. That would be just plain silly.

amen. ive heard some speak of Real Radio as a disc that actually has "hooks" and \'catchy this and that\', but the music that was being produced/written from their early stages (incl. some of thee best tracks on RR) are simply, as jocelyn puts it, plain silly.

i actually read some dude\'s jambands.com book (published in \'03) at high sierra and Psychedelic Breakfast\'s review was interesting. they talked about the problem people have getting beyond the name, but once they do they could be floored by the incredible musicianship and songwriting. yada yada yada, mentioned palmieri as a lead guitar extraordinaire, yada yada yada. and then it ranked albums something like:

Psychedelic Breakfast (1999) 1 1/2*\'s
Deuce (2001) 2 1/2*\'s
Bona Fide (2002) 3 1/2*\'s

i went on to read a bunch of other band write-ups where Phish had an album called "Round Room" ranked at 3 1/2*\'s. oh yeah, i think Undermind also got 3 1/2 or just 3*\'s. my question is, who the **** is giving Deuce only 2 1/2*\'s???????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????icantbelievethesepeoplehave\'meaningful\'opinionssomewhereinthejambandworld???????????????????????????????????????????????damncocksuckers??????????????????? ??????????????????????????????????????????????????roundroomandunderminddeserve2starscombined????????????deuceshouldgetabout5(onascaleof5)?????????????????????????????????????????????????????ithinkimgonnatrytowritefora\'popular\'jambandmagazinenow????????????????????????????????????????????????????SHOWSOMEFUCKINGRESPECTFORTHEBESTBITCHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ????????????????????????????????????????? ?????????????

The crickets and the rust-beetles scuttled among the nettles of the sagethicket. "Vamanos amigos," he whispered, and threw the busted leather flintscraw over the loose weave of the saddlecock. And they rode on in the friscalating dusklight.  --Eli Cash

i\'ve gotta disagree with the RR haters out there.  i believe that RR has shown a marked maturity in their song writing w/ Doughboy and Gravity leading that charge

i feel like real radio has been their first venture into the world of songwriting as an art in itself.  prior to RR, i feel like the playing itself was the art, and having found a niche in this different method of expression, its easy for the crazy face melting jams to get lost, but just wait, this record is a landmark and just watch, on their next record you\'ll probably see more of a balance between the insane jams and the quality songwriting.  first people counldn\'t get past the name, now with the new name, people listen to RR and all they hear is the hooky songwriting, so they can\'t fully appreciate the musicianship.  the breakfast\'s path is like a pendulum that swinging back and forth between a target that will blow the world\'s collective mind and as time goes by it\'s getting closer and closer to stopping on that target.  ok, i\'m rambling now.  anyone know what i\'m sayin?

Yeah Jim and SlimI agree with you guys, it is certainly a more mature album... but... I like the rawness of the old tunes played with the skills they have now.

It\'s like, Wu-Tang could never touch 36 Chambers with any of their newer albums, because, man, it was just so raw...

joc i definitly agree.  i\'ve seen a lot of my friends bands mature and i end up liking the raw energy of a band being early on in their career.  prime example, my friends play in this band called coheed and cambria.  their first record ROCKED and then they got signed to columbia and had a lot of time to polish their next releases and i just find it lacks that straightfoward feel of the first record.  that really ends up being the case with any band that ends up having the capabilities to really make a polished sounding record.  ends up being hard to go back to that newborn sound so to speak.
