I know it has been discussed in jocelyn\'s "Movie suggestions" thread, however after watching this (finally) there is no doubt it deserves its very own thread.

Phenomenal.

Wes Anderson, Movie Masterson.

I liked it but I would not use the word phenomenal.
Then again Wes\' movies except for Bottle Rocket and Rushmore make my head hurt.

The Royal Tenenbaums is still my favorite. I think I\'ve fully realized about 60-70% of his humor and general use of symbolism after 20 views. The fact that he does make my head hurt contributes to my love. It\'s like being in a romantic relationship.

I thought Darjeeling was actually much easier to grasp fully the first time around than all of his others. The humor especially was more straight-forward and not as dense in dialogue (ie Bottle Rocket). I\'m a firm supporter already, I thought about the movie all day in class.

indeed, i believe i need to see it a few more times before i deem it anything but well-done. i mean, i enjoyed the movie but it felt a little unilateral at some points, like i should be feeling some emotion from somewhere but i wasn\'t... ?

Agreed.

I saw it in the theaters and did not agree at all with any of the audience reactions.

My general feel was "eh, okay, i get it" but it wasn\'t the doubled-over-with-laughter that life aquidic was.

i think the tracking shot to "strangers" is amazing, and kind of tells the whole film in one shot, wes anderson is my favorite director, however i still can\'t decide if i like this film better than life aquatic, i thought it was pretty obvious that bill murray was the dad, and that the train was a symbol for life/the universe, which seems to explain the tracking shot of everyone in the characters thoughts on the train...  also the luggage symbolism is quite obvious, but man, he really is the best at setting scenes to found music, and though he had gotten alot of **** from critics for using too much slo-mo, he decided if he wanted to use it, he would in this film, unlike aquatic, and i think it really shows off how gifted wes is

"doubled-over-with-laughter" i dont think is how i would describe the reaction to life aquatic, while zissou is funny as hell, it\'s more like a fellini or tuffaut film, 8 1/2 and day for night come to mind, i also love his stock of actors, it\'s always great to see owen wilson do something real as opposed to night at the wedding crashers

Okay, you\'re right.

The first time I saw the movie I had the same feeling I have pretty much the first time i\'ve watched any wes anderson movie.

However, right now, it cracks me up.

Wes is all about dark humor, hazy laughs, Tragicomedy.

And correct me if I\'m wrong but Bill Murray is not the dad. It said in the credits, I\'m going to have to go roll them again, that someone else was the dad and Bill Murray was simply "businessman."  I think Wes purposely **** with people, made them think Bill was an important role in the main character\'s lives when in actuality he really just missed his train as a nameless independent.

I too love Life Aquatic. I\'m definitely a Wes Anderson ball licker. All of his movies fit my personality and sense of humor very well. Even when he\'s "really out there" I seem to understand his quirkiness sans doubt. This is not to say anyone else should or that I\'m able to tap in, he\'s just the one left-of-center director that caters to everything I want out of a movie. And I know there are many others who feel the same way. It\'s great to have this relationship with a director while in your 20\'s. I\'m psyched.

Ditto.

Tried finally watching this the other night but got too drunk. I couldn\'t see the screen so I gave up. Going to give it another shot tomorrow night.

Well that makes me feel pretty rotten. If it makes my case any better, using one eye was a bit helpful.

You know you\'re drunk when you have to close one eye just to see double!
