The only way it would be possible to "rank" a list of bands is to have them all play identical songs and decide which band played which song the best. And obviously that doesn\'t mean one band is better than the others.

I beg to differ as they set the precedent for all those obnoxious new rock bands with annoying male vocals (see Creed and other related bands).

I couldn\'t have said it better myself. There is something about Van Halen that I hate. It comes on the radio, I turn it off. I usually tell everyone around me when a song comes on the Van Halen sucks. Just not for me and I tried to like it.
