Zappa wasnt too jazzy of a guitarist, he played a lot of pentatonic, but kinda hung out on the 9th a lot, he wrote all sorts of crazy ****, I think he was the first Rockstar, and one of the first rock guitarists who did something progressive andoutside of the norm.... To say Zappa or Tim has more "skills" than Jerry Garcia is to me a statement made in ignorance.
To say that both Zappa and Tim\'s technical styles are superior to Jerry\'s would just be a different debate that would have a lot more merit.

look guy, jerry and trey. both were sick in their heyday, no denying that. both succumbeed to grimetime drug abuse and fizzled the **** out, no denying that. both made their band mates embarrased that they couldn\'t even play the shitthat they wrote. i never said that jerrry\'s skills were lacking, but by god frank zappa is so much more "technically superior" that its silly. jerry has always been one of my fave musicians, as asong writer, soloist and **** cultural icon. as far as guitar playing goes, FZ pwned.

the issue with "greatest guitarist of all time" that comes into play is that the greatest guitar player of all time probaby/almost certainly was not in any sort of a famous band.  in fact, he probably was rarely in bands at all because no one else could follow his lines.  Have you guys ever heard shawn lane?  i recently started listening to his stuff, and i dont know if he was ever in a band, but his guitar playing is unbelievable.  check him out on youtube.  ive also always said suke serulo from schleigho is one of the greatest players...his lines are NEVER in any set key whatsoever, never following ANY previously drawn out scale, and absolutely blazing fast and all over the place.  check him out too if you havent already.

this topic should be the greatest "Rock" guitar player of all time, in that case the choices are smaller, easier to choose from.
