mets/padres game last night came down to the wire. padres take the lead in the top of the 7th, lose it in the bottom of the 8th, regain it in the top of the 9th then hoffman blows it in the bottom half. hopefully peavy can step it up and take game 2.

the game last night was nuts. anderson racked up 10 rbi for an \'rbi cycle\'...in the first 6 innings. just goes to show when the yanks play teams that actually have good pitching theyre 5-7 runs a game won\'t cut it. would have finished at 18-5 if the angels actually cared about their pitching in the 9th.

NEW YORK -- Pedro Martinez is making progress -- even as the platform remains the same.
Martinez will remain with Class A St. Lucie for a fourth Minor League rehab start -- a third with St. Lucie -- on Monday, after which the team will evaluate whether he\'s ready to join the Mets or needs one additional start.
"At the point where we are right now, it\'s going to be start to start," general manager Omar Minaya said. "We\'ll evaluate it after the start on Monday."
Martinez will throw 80 to 90 pitches in that outing, and he\'ll likely then advance either to Double-A Binghamton for a final rehab start or join the Mets on a road trip that takes them to Philadelphia, Atlanta and Cincinnati. If Martinez does first make another Minor League start, he\'d be lined up to join the club at the start of a nine-game homestand on Sept. 7, which begins with three games against the Astros.
Martinez could have joined Double-A for his next start, but he opted instead to remain in a situation where he can worry less about the opposition and more about himself. Minaya said that his injured pitcher\'s greatest concern right now is location not velocity.
"Pedro needs to do what he wants to do in the at-bat," Minaya said. "The goal here is for him to pitch to the zone that he wants to pitch to. That doesn\'t matter whether it\'s done in \'A\' ball or it\'s done in another area."
the padres/mets series had a playoff feel to it. each team was capable of putting up a ton of runs in any inning. besides peavy, this series was all about offense. the lead was traded back and forth each game and it was only fitting that game three went to extra innings. beltran was a hero in game one and played strong throughout. khalil greene finished off the series 8-15 with 5 rbi. 2 errors each at 3B for wright and kouzmanoff (4 of the 5 total errors in the series) which really fueled comebacks for the mets. i hope they meet in the playoffs.

Both teams hit in that series but in reality the mets have a much better offense than the padres. The padres could easily beat the mets in the first round of the playoffs, but only because its a 5 game series and the padres have excellent front end of the rotation with Peavy, Young and Maddux. All of three of them CAN be lights out but it\'s certainly no guarantee. The mets have a much deeper and more balanced team overall and would definitely be the favorite if the teams were to meet in the second round. But if the Padres get the wild card I think they will be playing the Mets which sucks.
