No one agrees with me on this but I\'m going to say it again anyhow.

I kind of think that the Red Sox should retire # 25. Granted, that is Mike Lowell\'s number so it pains me to make such an assertion.

Well.... maybe they shouldn\'t officially retire the number, but just stop issuing it to players. Tony Conigliaro certainly didn\'t reach the requirements for having his number retired (10 seasons with the Red Sox, induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame,) but he was an extremely promising player who was the youngest in the AL to reach 100 career home runs. At 22 he was beaned in the face by a pitch and his career was effectively ended.

What do you think?

I cant believe that his number isnt retired......
the fact that he was the top prospect in the game at the time and taken out by a wild pitch bodes him deserving enough.  However I assume it\'s up to Lowell to give it up.  I dont know if its been proposed to him and he turned it down or just that nobody has mentioned it to him, but that is an interesting question......

Interestingly enough, Mike Lowell was actually the recipient of the Tony Conigliaro award in 99 for returning to the game after testicular cancer.

Hmmmm....
Is this a current issue on sports talk radio in beantown?
If this is a newer petition, I wouldnt be suprised to see his number retired by the end of the season...and hes having a pretty good season disregarding the fielding errors....my fantasy 3rd baseman

Nah this is a sentiment that has been bouncing around for a long time. Though I haven\'t heard any discussion of it for a while.

It has just been on my mind recently for some reason or another.

The official reason is that he hasn\'t met the official requirements for having his number officially retired....

Gregg.... yeah..... bored. Rain. Bleh. Lost my book. Hate the tv.

So sweet blogging was next on the list of things to do. Soon I am going to clean my house though. Eventually.

There are many, many books on your shelf I would love to dive into. If you lost the current one, go pick another off the shelf. Can\'t go wrong with Dumas.

either that or we can go see a play. :D

Not only should numbers not be retired for any reason, but all the previously retired numbers should be brought back as fair game.

Its just a number. All it does is make it easy to tell who the player is from a distance.

What are the official requirements?  I didnt realize there were statistical requirements for having a jersey retired, in any sport.....obviously any player with a retired number has done something worthy of having his jersey retired, but i would think that, especially if he still holds the record for yongest player to hit 100 HR\'s, that baseball, or the sox would make an exception......

"I don\'t get it; why is your number 7/8ths?"
"Oh, they went to fractions after all the whole numbers had been retired."

Well... it\'s not LOST, it\'s at James\' apartment.

I am also reading a book of Russian fairy tales but it is getting tiresome (there are only about 4 stories which get slightly altered dozens of times over.) I also am reading The Bhagavad Gita but I don\'t feel like it right now. And I don\'t feel like starting a fourth book.

Come pick me up. You could be here by midnight.

Hmmmmm....well I guess I can understand and if Tony Conigliaro has an award named after him that is an honor in itself.....
