apparently you need to drink to have fun? thats pretty weak if you ask me.
:that:
There are many factors that go into a draw so to say it is all the band I don\'t agree with. For me, I can only do shows on a saturday or sunday night because of my job. On occasion I can take a vacation day. Sometimes I skip sleep and catch a show, but even then it has to be a close show for me to make it to work on time. Otherwise it has to be a saturday or sunday. Add to that I just don\'t like some of the venues they play so I don\'t go to those anymore when they play. In that sence I agree with Dereck. If I miss a show, I\'ll catch the next one. That\'s just me, but I\'m sure many people have factors like this that they use in choosing shows. Some of us have kids. Some of us are unemployed. Some of us don\'t have cars or are under 21 (you\'re next Ali!). All of these can be factors directly from the fan base that effect draw at a show.
Well I thought the turnout for Mercury Lounge would have been bigger......However it wasn\'t but the people that were there, I would say 60 or so at the peak, were owned per usual. Not to mention that 90% of the number were completely unfamiliar faces. This is a good thing. The fact that they are playing Mercury is a good thing. Hopefully they will be asked back, because it is an AMAZING sounding venue that is well run. The location is SER.
There is a bar called The Essex Ale House which is literally around the corner and would be considered HEAVEN for all you beer afficianados. All kinds of ser beer on tap and in bottles. And REASONABLY PRICED..... One of the greatest moments in my experience with people happened here. I was in a ser beerdrinkers tavern drinking bottles of budweiser all night long, and NOT ONCE did someone, anyone make any kind of snide or snarky remark about my preference in beer....Oh and I got to meet and chat a bit with a local who (though in his past was an investment banker) acts as a professional heckler in the local comedy clubs....Nice chattin with ya Bobby.....
This past NY show was great from my perspective. And to me that is cool because I was very down on Breakfast shows in NYC (Lions Den, CODA). Though the show was a bit lite attendance-wise, I believe a lot of good things came out of this past trip.
Hopefully we will be back there again and some more hometowners will come out and support Breakfast music in the Big Apple. For this venue, neighboorhood, scene, is quite
**** ser....

What are you the head of DARE or something. Golly Gee mister I sure am sorry that I like to drink a beer now and then
I cant enjoy a show unless there are piles of drugs everywhere......does that make me a bad person?

Why is it that I am being called out simply because when I choose to go to shows I either get a hotel room, get someone else to drive or don\'t drink.
When I go out to shows I LIKE to drink. I also like to hear good music, I don\'t like chatty
**** crowds, shitty sound systems etc etc etc. It is all part of a night out. When that is limited my enthusiasm for attending a show is less. Thats all i stated in an opinion about NYC.
But somehow you guys feel the need to say I cannot have fun w/o drinking.
**** YOU

Zappa doesn\'t even drink so i don\'t think he was bashing you about going and not drinking
Are there any good clubs for soul-jazz/funk projects (not the straight-ahead, plain vanilla jazz that most people enjoy)
That\'s funny... when I think of plain vanilla jazz, I think of your average boring as
****/sounds like everything else/ repetitive/has been done a million times jazz/funk blend. That\'s about as straight ahead as you can get.
I am serisouly so tired of everyone who listens to jazz only liking it if it is funky.... *sigh*
Whatever, I guess people like what they like, and if it makes you happy, it\'s all good. So pay no attention to my bitching.
But I could seriously do without ever listening to Karl Denson ever again....

I think you need to spend a weekend out here, there are always great projects (usually on the funky side of things) that will get your feet tapping.
I think you need to spend a weekend listening to someone good playing standards or hard bop.
Sorry... thread derailed...
Anyhow... as you were.
