Author Topic: CT crowds vs. NYC crowds (Read 4185 times)

Hi all. I haven\'t yet had the chance to attend a CT show, only NYC shows so far. I absolutely love these guys, and just can\'t figure out why they aren\'t playing bigger venues and/or attracting more people to their shows (at least in NYC).

For those of you who have seen them in both areas, how do they compare? I have to assume they draw bigger crowds in their home state. Is NYC just a bad scene for them? Or is it just bad luck and bad timing for this years NYC shows?

Timings always a factor. I\'d guess of the shows I\'ve seen in CT MA VT NH RI and upstate NY, some of the venues get 250 heads packed in, rarely twice that much but the Freakout and 1000th show and other shows that get more hype get lot of people there.

Last NYC was a Thursday and a lotta folks can\'t be arsed to go out on a Thursday night.

I haven\'t gone to an NYC show yet, don\'t really plan on it either. Huge cities are hectic.

venues have a lot to do with it, like there will be nothing like Tobacco rd in the city. if they were still playing there theyd probably have a good amount more people at other venues because theyd establish a packed house at a cool place.

Seems like 7/10 recent shows in any location have been reported as Dooze.

I think it\'s defintitely 2 factors that work for a SER turnout vs. a dooze-

1. VENUE:
Bill\'s Bar in Btown looked pretty filled & was sold out on Fri. night - but it only has a max. capacity of 250 people. That same # in Toad\'s Place makes for a dooze.

2. PROMO:
They\'ve had some doozies in CT, and NY, and I\'m sure anywhere - but, when people are talking about the band & music in the weeks before the show is scheduled, it\'s usually a good turnout. IMO, NYC is just a hard city to promote in, due to the fact that 1000\'s of other bands are also promoting for the same night.

Sure my 7/10 statistic is unprecise, though I have been reading "disappointing turnout" in most of the recent show threads.

cant hold a venue responsible for turnouts, thats just not what the business is like these days. a band must take sole responsibility for their draw at a show. if the venue promotes, that is wonderful, but these days, thats just not the norm. a good band (i\'m talking more than just musical talent here, i\'m talking about the whole business model) should be able to play just about anywhere and secure a good draw, and if not, then don\'t book shows where you dont think you\'ll be able to draw or where there is no opportunity to build a draw.

more often than none, there are a number of other shows going down within the vast area that is NYC, that may interest those who could potentially see (and want to see)the Breakfast.. but choose otherwise..I never made it to Tobacco Rd. but have seen some healthy crowds at the knit and the lion\'s den.. Very impressed with the turnout from this past summer\'s boat cruise, esp for a wed. night..
for me, right now, nyc= meh

because they schedule a show the day after in CT so non hard core folks will wait till they get closer. and like i said, if people don\'t know a show is going on they won\'t be there, period.

for the people that really want to see this band succeed you need to do what you can to get people through the door. that means have a couple fliers and a couple sampler discs in your pocket when ever you go out. if there isn\'t a show in the next couple weeks just getting music in peoples hands WILL turn them on to the band.
