Orchids

This weekend, my wife and I attended the New York International Orchid Show.
Along with the flowers on exhibit they have about 50 dealers with flowers for sale. Prices are very reasonable and the vendors are friendly and informative. They know that if people have success with their first plant then they are very likey to purchase more. There is no cost to walk through the vendor area so I highly recommend dropping by if you are around Rockefeller Ctr while the show is running (April 20-23).

We ended up buying a phalaenopsis from Kawamoto Orchids.
It looks like this but an even darker shade of red.

Now we just have to keep the cat away from it:doh:

I\'m not sure if that is a ringing endorsement for the book.;)

If we get another I want to get one of the really crazy looking ones.

I love orchids and have really good luck with them.

When the flowers drop off, cut the spike back to the elbow. Then remove the orchid to a darker, cooler area and leave it there for a couple of weeks. Continue watering obviously and it has to get enough light/warmth to stay alive.l  Then return the orchid to a brighter area and it should flower. At least, that\'s how it has worked out for me. I only have one orchid remaining that my ex didn\'t kill but it has two flowering spikes right now and a third that has 3 buds about to open up. :)

Orchids are not very strong smelling flowers. In fact, most are almost devoid of scent. There are some varieties that do smell good, but in general they\'re more for look than smell. I did have one plant with small yellow flowers, bright orange in the middle, that smelled incredible... but it was a very rare variety. I forget the name.

I\'m lucky enough to remember to water my plants, let alone "taylor" to their desires!!! :D

Joc, how long do yours usually keep their flowers?

Good luck with your buds!
