Thanks for taping this, sounds great!  Any chance of getting the .flac on archive.org?
I\'ve already listened to this mayfly half a dozen times, can\'t get enough of it.  Some great stuff around 15 & 23.  What a rush Rush was!

I\'ve been bumping this show this morning and it is great.

A question for any and all out there: in order to upload to the archive, one needs the lossless files, not just mp3s. Unfortunately, that is all that is available for this show. Not that I am complaining at all. I so appreciate any and every source that we have. I just want to save this one(and others) for everyone to enjoy.

I suppose that some conversions can be done, like mp3 > wav > flac, but would everyone frown on this? The lineage would be given so one could see where this came from and they could decide for themselves. Just like to get this up on the LMA. And the Iron Horse from january, and the shindig in NH, etc.

Would this be a waste of time?

I wouldn\'t frown on it. Not every recording can have crystal clear origins. Would be good to have them on archive anyway. I agree :)

Looking forward to giving this a listen!

While the gesture is a noble one, this lineage is inappropriate for the archive.  This show was recorded onto a Tascam HDP2.  I have a hard time believing that a full res copy does not exist.  MP3 to FLAC conversion should never take place as it corrupts the gene pool so to speak.  Has anyone contacted the taper?

I am sure that you can upload mp3 audio to archive.  It would be best if the original wave/flac files could be obtained before uploading mp3 \'s to archive, but if it can\'t be found mp3 is better than nothing. The important thing is to document everything in the notes as to what it is.
also, many of the new handheld recorders record directly to mp3 format. so in this case there is no lossless copy available.

I know what your saying matt, my point is that the hd p2 is a high end 24 bit recorder.  I really can\'t grasp why someone would record direct to mp3 on it.  That is a seriously nice box, and anyone who owns it knows what they are doing.  There has to be a full res copy out there.

I just looked it up.  this box does not record to MP3.

true, this unit does not record directly to mp3s and a lossless copy probably exists, but many recorders record to mp3, just want to point that out.  so what should we do?   I say upload the lossy copy and if the lossless copy surfaces, it can be uploaded later.

The reality is very few people are archiving flacs. since they are large files compared to mp3, they are not compatible most mp3 player, most people are not bothered by the difference between mp3 and flac and its a hassle to convert the flacs to mp3. I also think that if we become flac Nazi, it scare novices away from taping because they don\'t want to be criticized for not doing something wrong.  Its hard enough to get shows taped and uploaded these days .  I\'m sure we would take a mp3 copy of the Albany show right now from a cheap mp3 recorder vs nothing, which is what we have.

Your right, I concede.  I just hate the idea of taking this beautiful tech and still adding unnecessary generations to our recordings.  Lossless is lossless and we could preserve these recordings for ever theoretically, but converting mp3 to wav ruins that.  do that a half dozen times and your left with recordings that sound like your 12th gen dead analogs!

I have no problem with archiving mp3\'s it\'s the conversion to flac that rubs me the wrong way.

Thanks for the responses folks. I just thought that the LMA had to have lossless files in order to upload and I\'m glad that I\'m wrong. I guess I\'ll up the mp3s until something better comes along. At least the masses will be able to hear it.
