Lynyrd Skynyrd or ABB "Classic line-ups"
« on: November 18, 2003, 08:35:54 pm »
I think Skynyrd is ignored when it comes to Southern Rock.
It seems to always be about ABB. As far as I am concerned the classic line-up of Skynryd(read pre plane crash \'77) put out way better music than ABB w/ Duane (read up to \'72). Skynryd saw ABB and said to hell w/ it let\'s have 3 guitars. That third guitar adds so much to their "swamp music " that I feel it defines Southern Rock more that ABB. When it comes to jukeboxes around the country, I bet Skynryd is in more of them than ABB,yet everyone always raves about ABB.
There is also the thought that "Classic" Marshall Tucker Band kicks ABB butt also, so I would think it goes like this:

Top 3 Southern Rock Bands

1. Lynryd Skynyrd
2. Marshall Tucker Band
3. ABB

I am so glad you mentioned the Marshall Tucker Band! They came right to my mind after reading your first sentence. Definately one of my favorites!!

Well not sure if I agree w/ Skynryd over ABB w/ Duane but if we are mentioning Southern Rock bands that don\'t get enough kudo\'s then bring on the:

***** Hatchet does rock and are definetly underrated but I think this is due more to the fact that their catalog is not as prolific as the others.

Speaking in general as to which "southern rock" band is a better band overall:

1. Allman Brothers
2. Black Crowes
3. Steve Miller Band
4. Lynyrd Skynyrd
5. Marshall Tucker Band
6. Georgia Satellites

But as far as personifying southern rock:

1. Lynyrd Skynyrd
2. Allman Brothers
3. Marshall Tucker Band
4. Steve Miller Band
5. Georgia Satellites
6. Black Crowes

And "Freebird" never becomes "not a great song".  It just gets overplayed and overhyped, and it doesn\'t stand up to the jams that we\'re used to hearing.

I guess you\'re right Drew. Freebird is still a great song. The jam does stand up if it\'s a live version though maybe not too exciting as we have grown up w/ it.
I do have to say Freddie is right. Us cats don\'t know dick. We\'ll leave the dick to him. Keep going down that road to oblivion. Remember the ABB in the eighties before Warren saved them ?

Steve Miller Band was a good band before he decided to take the money and run. Hits mean nothing really remember Abracadabra was a hit. Now Steve is just fat and crushing those laurels he\'s been sitting on since then.
