If a baseball player hit a home run in a game and it was determined that the bat he used was corked, the home run would be taken away and the score would be affected. In hockey, if a team scored and the goalie was interferred with, the goal would not count. Why shouldn\'t the same premise hold true for a football game?

The difference with your examples is that these actions would have been caught and corrected during the game, not a few days later. I don\'t ever recall a run being taken off the board due to a corked bat being discovered either. [EDIT] I suddenly recalled the famous George Brett \'too much tar on the bat\' video clip. I\'m not sure if that resulted in a retraction of a run from the score though. [/EDIT] Unfortunately, it\'s too late for the Jets to get anything out of the NFL\'s punishment towards Belichick and the Patriots.

By the way, I believe the unauthorized employee of the Patriots was escorted out of the stadium at halftime. I could be wrong though. Even if he was, he still could have provided the Patriots with information.

I\'m curious to see how Goodell handles this situation. I feel really bad for him. In his first year he\'s had to deal with Pacman making it rain and Vick running a dog fighting ring all before Week 1! Now the Patriots are being investigated for cheating. This league really needs an enema.

This is a good story to report on in the NFL though.

Kevin Everett voluntarily moved his arms and legs on Tuesday when partially awakened, prompting a neurosurgeon to say the Buffalo Bills\' tight end would walk again -- contrary to the grim prognosis given a day before.

"Based on our experience, the fact that he\'s moving so well, so early after such a catastrophic injury means he will walk again," said Dr. Barth Green, chairman of the department of neurological surgery at the University of Miami school of medicine.

"It\'s totally spectacular, totally unexpected," Green told The Associated Press by telephone from Miami.

The NFL won\'t rule on whether it affected the play, there\'s no way that they can prove it.  The NFL has ruled that they did record the defensive hand signals and are convening to decide what the punishment should be.  All I\'m saying is that even before the tape news hit, Jets defensive players were commenting that the offense seemed to know every move they were making.  And I know that the Jets aren\'t the best team in the league, but to not get to the QB once, that\'s a little fishy in my book.

I can site an example of a run being taken back, not for being corked, but for having too much pine tar - George Brett had it happen in a game against the Yankees

Taken from ESPN.com -

"At this point, we have not been notified of the league\'s ruling," Belichick said in a statement. "Although it remains a league matter, I want to apologize to everyone who has been affected, most of all ownership, staff and players. Following the league\'s decision, I will have further comment."

If he did nothing wrong, why is he apologizing?

That is because the Patriots are slaves to watching video. They spend great amounts of time watching game footage and that is what they have always done.

It was not clear what Belichick was apologizing for, and the coach repeatedly refused to elaborate on a one-paragraph statement issued 10 minutes before a regularly scheduled news conference to discuss Sunday night\'s game against the San Diego Chargers.

"At this point, we have not been notified of the league\'s ruling," Belichick said in a statement. "Although it remains a league matter, I want to apologize to everyone who has been affected, most of all ownership, staff and players. Following the league\'s decision, I will have further comment."

The statement said Belichick spoke with Goodell this week about a "videotaping procedure" during last Sunday\'s game and "my interpretation of the rules."

His interpretation of the rule is considered cheating NOW since it has made headlines. Do you seriously think that every other team in the NFL does not do the same thing? Regardless of whether it is for the game being played or a game to be played later, they all tape and have at least 5 cameras all over the field, surely one of them is on the other team\'s coaches. Whoever used the guy on 2nd Base stealing the catcher\'s signals and tipping off the batter analogy almost hit the nail on the head. I\'d prefer to look at it as watching the 3rd Base Coach and stealing his signals since he is giving them every pitch and has a plethora of fake ones. It\'s part of the game, and that is the reason why the base coaches and catchers shoot out so many signs. Hell, we did it in Little League! Times change, we are in an age of technology, and technology has caught up to the game. What difference would it make if the Patriots had a guy on their sideline with binoculars trying to steal signals or even if they had a legit player on the field shadowing the other sideline trying to pick up signals? None. But because it was a camera that records, everyone freaks. Most NFL coaches cover their mouths with their clipboard when talking in their headset, why? Probably because they know someone is trying to read their lips and find out what they\'re gonna do.

And whoever said their Super Bowls should be asterisked needs to remember who the coach of the opposing team in this mess is. Somehow I think he knows all about the Patriots signal stealing strategies.

And, the hockey analogy is way off. I won\'t even discuss that.

Let it also be noted that I am a Miami Dolphins fan, and probably the biggest Pats hater in Greater New Haven County, so my views are not biased because of the team in question.

Your bias is in question because where there\'s a dolphin fan, there\'s a Jets hater - just kidding.

That may be true.

On a side note, I will be in Foxboro Sunday evening to watch the Pats/Chargers game. Keep an eye on the television for me, I\'ll be the one wearing the Merriman jersey getting syringes and/or beer tossed at him.

Enjoy that game. The new stadium is pretty nice.

Hope to see you get hit with a beer.

Maybe they figured since they share the same name that they could spy on other teams under the Patriot Act.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/070912

Funny column, especially the long list of past Super Bowl winners and the various ways they later admitted to or got caught cheating in their championship years.  Pretty much every NFL champion ever would have to be asterisked.  It\'s just proof that every team is doing all sorts of stuff.  If you\'re sitting there thinking that the Patriots are the only team horsing around with questionable miniscule-advantage tactics, you are naive.

Anyways, this story is kind of a joke, and every media member and fan who latches onto it for dear life to have something negative to say about the Patriots is kind of a tool.  10 years ago with no internet and no 24-hour media, this story is a lost note buried deep in a syndicated NFL notes column in a Sunday paper.  Now with everyone needing something to talk about besides the game, this gets run for a week and then it disappears for something else.

BTW love the camera logo.  Antbach, print up 10,000 of those puppies, score a VW wagon, and hit up all Patriots road game lots.  You\'ll be retired by Christmas!

I don\'t think that the Super Bowls should be asterisked, but I do think that they should be penalized for being caught.  And, yes, I\'ll say that I care more about it because it happened against the Jets.
