Archive is going down the tubes IMO. Read this thread to find out why.

Hey Mr. QuickToJumpToConclusions,
Did you read all of that thread? This is something that has been talked about for a LONG while. Two facts you have to keep in mind:
1. EVERY show will be available in shn format, only shows allowed by the bands will be available in mp3 also.
2. This allows people to sample a greater range of bands. You could d\'l a show in a few minutes, check it out, and if you liked it, d\'l the shn version. This way you have not spent a day or more to d\'l a show you may wipe off your hd in 10 minutes.

Personally, I hate mp3, but to check out a band to see if you like them is a great idea. When you go to a bands website and sample their songs, guess what??....mp3

Yes I did read the whole thread over. I f I was a taper, I would want my tapes removed. They don\'t give you a choice, this is a joke IMO. It polutes the trading community like nothing. Tapers will boycott this and add " DO NOT ENCODE TO MP3 AND UPLOAD TO THE ARCHIVE" to their source info. They seem to have to respect let alone give a shit. Oh and Hamilton, I dunno... Don\'t get started.

I agree with being able to download the .mp3\'s to check out bands you haven\'t heard, etc... but I find it more fulfilling to spend however long it takes your connection to download the .shnf and then to convert to .wav and then burn. I cherish the shows I have converted much more than just some cheesy .mp3 files that any 10 year old kid can navigate through. Plus you also have to recognize that the music that we, as downloaders, are downloading are unique live shows that are different everytime, even if the track names are the same show to show. Dig? Any of us who have drifted from the everyday Top 40 bullshit world can respect this.

As for LMA posting .mp3 as well as .shn/.flac, I think it\'s great. Not only because, like everyone else is saying, you can quickly listen to something you wouldn\'t wait for otherwise, but also because there is something to be said about the "modern music industry" views of bands that "allow" live recordings and trading of shows. They have made it possible for the people, like us, to get pretty much all of the \'newer\' music we\'d want for free without having to resort to using certain p2p file-sharing software such as Napster or Kazaa. Which like everyone knows by now, that even the thought of using such software could land you with hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines... or so they say...

Don\'t get me wrong though... certain bands that I have been turned on to by seeing them play live, deserve way more money than any of the GLAM-bands that swamp all major media. These bands are the same ones who are pissed off about people using the illegal software to trade studio versions of their songs that you hear everyday just by turning on the radio, or the tv, or a video game, etc rant etc etc...

Thus sparks a kind of a side-topic... I was watching a documentary on the history of Mosh Pitting, and when they got to the part about Woodstock 00, or whenever it was, and the riots ensued, a brief interview with the leader of the Top 40 Rap/Metal genre (Fred Durst) was given, and all he had to say was, "It\'s not our fault." Oh that\'s great. Play a song called "Break Something" at an after midnight concert and see what happens. I guess society has forgiven them for that one, obviously because they got rave reviews on some bullshit album they put out in the newest issue of Rolling Stone. Boy I wish I would\'ve thought about playing a cover of a George Michael song and got rich and famous for it. Haha Hehe!!

Sorry about that....

Take the meat heads out of Bonnaroo and make a truly jam-based festival. I don\'t give a shit if punk bands start playing, as long as they play live jams of their punk rock songs... that type of shit will never happen.

now i\'m just getting grizzelled... god damn teenie boppers... argh...

That\'s it for now.

well, THAT was a tangent! :D

anyways, i posted this on STG:

waaahhhh... waaahhh...

christ people, who cares?? they\'re giving people a choice. good for them. why do you care how people prefer to listen to their music?? because one of those inferior mp3 recordings may slither its way to you in a trade, and you\'d unknowingly listen to it, thus scarring your hearing for life?! heavens, no!!

is there really any active "trading" that goes on anymore? i\'ve amassed thousands of cds, and i don\'t think i\'ve been involved in a trade since 1999.

personally, i\'m pro choice. i\'m also a taper. i think this is a good thing. but hey, if you wanna boycott archive.org for offering people a choice, well, don\'t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

.....

people are acting like the LMA is going to be an all-mp3 site, and they\'re ditching lossless formats. that\'s obviously not the case. they\'re expanding their audience by offering up an alternate product. this will allow people on dial-up to, if they wish, download and listen to something they never would have been able to if they were on dialup. it\'s like they\'re making available to you a Focus, because you can\'t afford a Mustang. sure, the \'stang blows the Focus out of the water, but the Focus will get you from point A to point B.

this is also a great way to give young bands more exposure. a lot of people are reluctant to download a 500mb+ show of a band they\'ve never heard before.. this is a good way for people to give a band a quick listen, before deciding to take the plunge on a bigger, lossless show.

i\'m just really not seeing how there\'s anything wrong with this.

Being a taper w/ a handful of shows I have taped on the archive, I just ask that MY shows are not encoded to MP3. Someone else can encode everything they tape, just dont do it to my shows, cool? Thats all I ask. I spend alot of time making these recordings quality. The only thing this will do, is make tapers sit on their masters, or do it the old fashion way. BNP!!!

I dont hate MP3\'s, I just think it degrades recordings that folks spent alot of time and $ trying to make the best they can. an A+ on anyones list. Seeing a show you have taped on someones list posted as an A+ is a hell of a good feeling for a taper.

take care all.

just my 2 cents
