Title: Radio 104 (CT, 104.1 WMRQ) is gone!!?!?
Post by: davepeck on September 17, 2003, 11:15:17 am
new rock radio 104, WMRQ in hartford, ct seems to be gone.. more importantly, this is the station that hosted \'JamNation\' every week, a show which PB has appeared live on twice.. anyone know what happened??

from their website:

Quote
Thank you for all the years of support! WMRQ did our best to remain on the "cutting edge" with new music… on-air personalities, new music and concerts like the annual Radio 104-fest and the monthly "5 Bands for 5 Bucks".

Radio 104 will remain alive on-line at http://www.radio104.com. As Radio 104 goes "underground", we will now feature commercial-free new rock. 24 hours a day… 7 days a week… 365 days a year.

aside from JamNation, i never really listened to 104.. but this is just a sign of CT radio going from bad to worse.. with the best classic rock station (105.9 WHCN) becoming \'The River\' (soft rock hits) not too long ago, this is just showing us how bad \'popular\' music has become... not good news at all.. :(

One more successful effort for Clearcrap Communications to kill yet another quarter way decent radio station. What\'s next....WPLR doing 20\'s show tunes?

1/4 way decent? the only thing good they had that was worth listening to was jamnation. does this mean they wont even have jamnation on xfm? probably not unless they move to another station to broadcast from.

Radio station goes from grunge to hip-hop

(Hartford-WTNH, Sept. 17, 2003 6:15 PM) _ Fans of modern rock music may find fewer choices on the radio these days. Radio 104 in Hartford has gone away from grunge and opted for hip-hop.

Watch the story by News Channel 8\'s Chris Velardi
Some people are furious. They\'ve lost their favorite radio station. Others are thrilled. They\'ve got a new favorite station. This week, after changing its format, WMRQ-FM is banking on more people being in that second group.

"The all-new Power 104.1."

New rock is old news at WMRQ-FM. What was Radio 104 is now Power 104.1.
This week the station\'s owner - Clear Channel Communications - dumped the alternative rock format in favor of hip-hop and R&B.

"You should anticipate change in radio," says Rick Vaughn. "I learned that very early on."

Rick Vaughn is the program director of Clear Channel-owned Kiss 95.7. He\'s also the spokesman for Power 104.1.

"I think it\'ll be clear this is a different radio station, serving people who really only had one choice before."

That one choice - Hot 93.7 - is the fastest growing radio station in the state. Management there told me it welcomes the competition.

Meantime at The Rock, 106.9 WCCC, they\'re a little giddy. Radio 104 was WCCC\'s main competition.

"We shared quite a bit of listeners, so with them gone this is the natural place to go," Mike Karolyi said.

Industry veteran Ross Brittain, the former morning host at Kiss 95.7, says on the surface the format change may seem like a response to changing tastes in music, but the bottom line is the bottom line.

"It\'s all about the Benjamins," meaning money, he said. Brittain says these days hip-hop radio sells more ads.

What\'s it mean for you the listener? It depends on what you like.

"For somebody that\'s not into rap and hip-hop that\'s not so good," Brittain said.

But there will always be someplace for true alternative rock fans to turn.
College radio like the University of New Haven\'s WNHU, a non-commercial station where the money doesn\'t matter.

"It allows the music to stand on its own," says Matthew Field, WNHU.

If you still want to hear "Radio 104" music you can by logging on to the station\'s website, which is still streaming commercial-free music online.

chris - while i\'m not a fan of \'new rock\' and the stuff they played on 104 myself, you have to look at the bigger picture here.. another rock station is now dead and replaced with hip-pop.. this is a blow to rock and roll.. it\'s dying.. slowly.. much in thanks to clear channel..

The think the real "big picture" is that 104.1 and 95.7 (two of the three biggest CT stations along with KC101) are both owned by Clear Channel.  Does that sound at all like an attempted monopoly to anybody else?

Its Clear Channel forcing you to listen to what sells and then you want to go to these shows and see these people scream into lics with no voice and no talent. Talent doesn\'t sell anymore. It all comes down to greed!! CC needs to be broken up. I never liked 104.1, so to me it doesn\'t matter. I really need to find a CC Sucks shirt so I can wear it with pride.

I never liked 104 or jam nation for that matter..But, the point being is that we are having this hip hop culture shoved more and more down our throats and each every day without any choice anymore....Those poor emo and angry skater kids that listen to 104 have no outlet now for their aggression!!!

Screw radio104 and screw clear channel. Clear channel has ruined radio, but in a few years anyone who listens to the radio will have xm satellite radio. Its becoming more affordable for the equipment and its only $10 a month for the service to get 100 channels, or $7 for the basic service, which is a great deal.

Many new car stereos are xm ready, and since the service is so cheap i think most people who buy a new car that has the equipment will pay for the service. The cheapest way to go is to pay $50 for the reciever that hooks up to your computer. It doesnt use your internet connection, it just plays using your pc hardware and soundcard and the interface is on your computer screen.  It also has a lot of cool features like being able to notify you if a certain band or song is on not matter which station its on, even if you are listening to another station at the time. You can even open up a window and have it show you a list of what songs all the other stations are playing.

Many people are using their computer to listen to music and find out about new bands because for the last few years its been impossible to do that on the radio, so this is a great legal alternative to mp3 for people who like to go online and download everything because they have no hope of hearing the type of music they like on mtv or on the radio.

And speaking of xm radio, does anyone know if jamnation will still be on whatever channel aired it on xm? I dont have it yet, but i would at least like to get the reciever that hooks up to the computer, and if jamnation was still on that would encourage me to buy it sooner.

To put it bluntly, I am someone who enjoys ALL genres of music (note my vast CDR list).  I dislike large blocks of commercials on many radio stations and is a reason I would rather listen to CD\'s in my car instead of bad pop and Casey Casem\'s Top 40.  However, the main point is that Jamnation is an awesome show and this is one good thing that Radio 104 featured.  Hopefully this show will be picked up somewhere else soon.  Until then,

Truly,

matt2000

I am still really lost without 104 and refuse to turn on my radio anymore.  I hate 106.9 because they play too much darn Metallica.  I hate metallica.  So, i basically have begun making mix cds.....so i dont have to constantly rummage through while i am driving. I think I may invest in XFM radio in my new car I am getting...... Does anyone have that?  is it anygood?  I just feel lost not having my 90s at noon.
