easily the best time i\'ve had at a b-fast show last night. i brought my entire glastonbury crew. even some people i havent seen in a few years. i was able to convert a bunch of fans too. most of them were pleasently surprised. should see a bunch of new people on this board soon enough. :)

Kind of a strange show though...

The blues jam in Eppy 3 was real nice. I don\'t think I\'d mind if I never heard the song Hot for Teacher ever again though.

PJ, nice meetin ya. definitely one of the best gladys I\'ve witnessed to date. everything else was excellent as always, but the gladys is my personal highlight, along with honeybutter. I don\'t know about Zeppelin, I would have loved to hear Peace Frog again.

It seems that their \'cross genre\' covers aren\'t their best. I didn\'t mind hot for teacher, it was about the same quality as their sweet leaf (black sabbath) cover from 1/16/05 at Crossroads.

All in all, it was a good show. Not a great show, imo, but a good one. I really dug rufus second set, along with the eps frist and Attraction to Shade Ditty.

Also, something I knoticed and would like y\'all opinion on:

Is it just me or did they drastically shorten bugs?el

Good to hear the balcony was open, the last couple Breakfast shows I saw at The Iron Horse were played to a closed-off balcony.  Sounds like the Noho/Amherst fanbase is replenishing itself after losing a bunch of the original PB fans (2001 era) that have since graduated and moved from the area.

Episode 3 > GBFBITS > Episode 3 > Drunk Monk Bar > Episode 3

Guess I will finish posting what I started last night.

When we arrived the venue was not open. We went across the way to Packards to enjoy a beer before the show. While at Packards, I met bdfreetuna and his friend. Thanks again for the prizes. When I left Packards after my beer, I went to the venue and waited and one of the longer lines to see The Breakfast. I knew then that this show was going to be something.

I told a few people that this was going to be the show that propelled them into the right direction. Then the show began, almost on time and to a very packed house.

The Episode 3 sandwich was definitely the highlight of the evening. It was an excellant way to breakdown the "emoitions/feelings of Buquebus". Tim was working the crowd like no other last night with a lot of tension and release work from the get go. I said a few times, especially during GBFBITS that TPalms was shredding his axe. The night started out near perfect. The jam into No Regret was good, but the Gladys Pimp and Kangaroos with Me was awesome. Great playing by the entire band. From the beginning you could see Adrain pounding the skins with authority. The highlight of the 1st set is the Gladys Pimp and Kangaroos With Me > The Chase. It is what I refer to a whiplash jam. The high power and energy eminating from the Gladys came almost to a complete stop on a dime before they slowly brought themselves into The Chase. I had just purchased a beer and thought I heard Tim say something about a Set Break?

Set break is perfect. I enjoy set break, it gives everyone a minute to catch a breathe, a smoke or talk to there friends. Either way, IMO, the band made great use of their time. Set break was short and sweet and then it was back to the show.

By this point in the night, I had basically seen the show from every spot in the venue. I thought the balcony was the best spot but my beer was down on the stage so I decided to hang out on the Save/Animal side a little longer. I\'m glad I did. I had given up all hope for Honey Butter after hearing it at the Webster on NYE. Glad I didn\'t shut the door on  it. Honey Butter was intense and has a lot more potential then I ever could imagine. There were a few parts that sounded as if they had more time they could expanded but then again a 30-minute Honey Butter during a short show wouldn\'t have been wise. I hate the VT Song but I must say in the last year they really did rework and the music to the song is better. Still a song I can do with out. So I went back up stairs to chat with some peeps before finding myself back down stairs with a beer behind the soundboard. Where I was standing next to Weekapaug19. Phaddy Boom Baddy went over really well. It has a perfect crowd interaction part, everyone knew the lyrics and sang. As Weekapaug19 turned to me after PBB and said they need to bust into Rufus, Mooboos, Scheme or something. And I agreed, they needed something big to wrap up this show. As I finished the boys hit the opening to Rufus and the place was nuts. As Oldnewbie said after this show, the Iron Horse is the house that Rufus built. They love to place Rufus in that place. The Drum Solo was great. Animal beat the skins like a drunken step father beats his new wifes kids when she is not around. How is arms didn\'t fall off after the show is beyond me. As Animal was ending the drum solo he brought the beat way way down before bringin it back up for Hot For Teacher. The way Animal kicked into Hot For Teacher was awesome. I hate Van Halen and don\'t really care for this song at all but it was nice for DerickW to finally get it after missing it in Syracuse. A cool tune for a mostly college crowd.

Ron\'s bass solo in the encore was strong and deep. He was simply on fire all night and it gave all the peeps in the crowd a nice farewell gift. Attraction is a different tune and I don\'t know how I feel about the lyrics but the music has a cool cartoonish feel to and I think it crossed into Bugs beautifully. Bugs is a comical tune and was a decent way to end the show.

The recap is this. The band took great advantage of the opportunity. After the Mills Street show was missed and this crowd built up to near sell-out there was only one thing to do and that was set fire to the building. The two set show, although short was just the boost needed. The entire band from the beginning was wild. Great work by Dobson and Ellis-D.

Not the best Breakfast show I have seen but it was definitely for some people there as I overheard a kid near the bathroom line say it was "the best Breakfast show he has ever seen". So, hopefully they made a few new friends that\'ll stick around for a little while.

All and all, this was a rocking show for your no so typical jamband.

Well, it won\'t be easy to follow a review like spacey\'s, i will do my best.  I ended up pregaming at a freind of a freind\'s house who lives in the amherst area and that was just the best way to start the night. These kids that i had never met were totally down with the Bfast but said (although members of .info) they never visited the board.  So we had a lil jam session of our own while enjoying some BBC growlers and watching "Tim Leary is Dead".  We got a lil caught up doing a rocky raccoon sing along before heading out, so we got there and were buying our tickets right as the band got up on stage.  I started out watching right by the stage for Space city>ep 3 but when i saw that the balcony was open i went up there for the view and let me tell ya, it was ser.  Watched most of GBFBITS from there and could really see the whole crowd getting down for the jam which was a def highlight of the night (my roomates fav part at least).  went back down stairs and spent some time behind the soundboard, immersed myself in the crowd a bit, then went back to stage side.  As freddy put it:
Quote from: ellis-d
adrian/save side last night=the place to be
The DMB into blues installment of Ep. 3 was another  highlight of the night, just perfect.  I have to admit that i was a bit weary on the whole blues thing and always thought it should be a funky ending, but seeing it live for the first time last night i totally got it.  The Jam>No Regret was cool as always, that sorta RATM type jam.  Then when No Regret came to a close i remember Tim playing a couple dissonant notes and some one next to me (can\'t remember who it was) yelled, "Gladys!".  Low and behold, the sickest gladys i\'ve heard since Rev Hall followed.  Straight funk to end the set, just how i like it.
Then comes an announcement by Tim that, "We are taking a short set break!"....no fuckin way! i had a feeling all week after missing Mill Street that they would have to do two sets! And now i found myself in a lil headie lot with a bunch of kids too cold to do anything but sit in there cars and partake.
The first honey butter played to the students of Umass and dedicated to Butterfield was an amazing way to start the second set.  I liked this song a lot when i first heard it at NYE, but this one just shows how much of a monster it will become.  Another reason why this show was so great, was the amazing sound in there.  Dobz had the levels absolutely perfect, one of the best sounding shows (in terms of the mix) i\'ve ever seen from the bfast and def the best at Iron Horse, and the sound in there is always kickin\'.  Which brings me to Ellis\' lights which i thought were tremendous basically all night, and i will defend his "vision" to the death, cause i really don\'t mind the "dark times" and actually i like them a lot. i totally saw what Ellis meant when he said that he uses the lights to unify the band and not just put a spotlight on whoever was soloing at the moment during the rufus jam....there was like this big build up by the band and then Tim sorta took a lil solo to bring it up just one more step but instead of throwing a bunch of light on Tim, ellis kept it dark until the very last moment when they broke into the crescendo of the jam and Ellis threw on all the lights on the stage and the whole place just went from dark to light, from silent to deafening.  And that was probably my highlight of the show.  Hot for teacher was a fun way to end the show and sorta kept with the light hearted feel of the second set.  I was a bit dissapointed with the encore, although both of the songs are fav midset songs of mine, i just didn\'t really feel them as encores.  Especially after the SER bass solo i was a little let down that it wasn\'t somthing a lil more funky and upbeat, but i can\'t complain too much cause i had already gotten way more than i had expected coming in.  A two set show, ten less from a sell out, and my first ep. 3 made this a night to remember.  Hopefully we will get to see the boys playing at Pearl Street next time around!

no time for much, but that gladys was the HEAT!! tranced out funk in the first set that had me going like a 14 year old candy ass raver on four hits of Russian e-bombs. eppy 3 madness was executed as smooth as it gets.  as for the VH- you kidzzz need to know your history :) this show was killer.. honeybutter was ill- and the Rufus was up there with the Sterling Stage Rufus of yesteryear.. adrian and Ron killed it on thier solos.. encore was surprising- two songs I could hear at each and every show I attend paired together.. estahwhaddup thanks for the ride, and nice pic.. i\'m not sure why people referred to this as a "weird show"- I thought it was rather huge to be honest.

it had been too long....due to lack of money and job.  kick ass show. first set was very adventurous cuz ive never heard eppy 3 live. second set was killer...funky ass vermont song and the rest that followed was all sick.  the scene was pretty sweet.....ran into a couple sweaty trippers that are apparently some .info regulars.  all in all, a fun ass time.

oh by the way, jordan had a great show last night. im sayin MVP of the evening.

good to hear man! ya, the show was sick last night....archive will take a day or so to get cleared by the archive curator, but personally i\'m gonna d/l both just cause they prob sound different since they are from two diff taper rigs.

If you need any shows i would suggest going to archive.org and downloading the latest ones, (esp. Nectars from dec. cuz its a soundboard) but also you can check out thetradersden.org cuz there are some DVDs for download up there.  If you need a B&P i would also be willing to hook you up.  So don\'t be shy! Welcome guy!

I have always heard about the mystique surrounding the Iron Horse especially the legendary breakfast shows that have gone down there.....  Before last night I was at the two previous Iron Horse shows and though the shows were a great time, I failed to see what the big deal was.....  Well last night it was easy to see what the deal is with this band at this venue from the moment I walked towards the door....

We arrived at 10 and there was a line about 25-30 people deep awaiting enterance....  All I could hear as we stood freezing and waiting from the gathering line was, "have you ever seen these guys before?", "this is my first show", and stuff like "yeah i have seen them once or twice and they rocked"....  There was something in the air last night....

Once in the Horse and saw that the balcony was open because it needed to be in order to handle the size crowd, i knew that the night would not be quite like the past 2 shows I have been to....

I hit the bathroom downstairs right as the band was coming on and when I recognized the opening chords to Eppy 3 I strapped myself in for the ride, and thank god i did, because what was to follow was a perfect blend of setlist writing and first set throw down.....

The Ep. 3 sandwich was a tasty treat with the band precisely disecting their most anticipated tune with a surgeons touch, transplanting solid versions of Great Big and Drunk Monk into the mix creating a monster of a jam.

This is also not the first time that I have felt the jam in the jam>No Regret has more to it than just a "jam".

Not to be outdone by the Awakening, Gladys Pimp popped up and she came hard and funky as the best Gladys that I have heard.  The haunted organ intro into The Chase was sheer beauty exercised by the hands of Jordan.

Setbreak found me running outside for a quick breath and a quick breath.  A perfect set up for the amazing Honey Butter set 2 opener.  I have loved this song from the first time I have heard the barest of bones of the tune.  This song will grow and grow and probably consume entire sets of music before its all said and done....

I dont hate the VT Song, as it consistantly can get any crowd of any size up and dancing like nobody is watching.  And it kept the Iron Horse crowd thirsting for more.

Phaddy Boom came and went as a solid version, but this song is no fun unless you can spark up a jib or a bowl and pollute the band with a haze of heady pot smoke....after losing 2 pieces to this tune over the years, i have learned that there are places for such puffing and places not.....the Iron Horse was not that place.....

When Rufus started I left the front of the stage to step out for a sweaty cigarette hoping to catch pneumonia.  I didnt get sick, but by the time my smoke was done I was full out spinning in the doorway chomping on my cheek to get back to the stage and finish the tune dancing my ass off with the crowd and the band....Animal was on fire out of Rufus and into a mindbending drum solo....

Hot For Teacher was the best version of the new cover I have heard and think its a great cover for this band to keep in their repetoir.  It was also an amazing 2nd set closer amidst second set that could barely hold a candle to what happened earlier in the night......

The minute I saw the band depart the stage after the VH classic, I knew they had to return and give us one more chance to loose our minds along with them.  When I heard the bass solo begin, I wasnt sure what was going to happen, but it wasn\'t to long after the band joined in with Save, that I knew we were getting an Attraction encore.  I am pretty sure I have never seen one of those and was drooling and jumping out of control.....

Out of breath but not energy, I was hoping for the band to walk off after leaving everything on the stage with the Attraction.....However it appeared that they were going to do one more....Could it be Puppetry?  nah...way to long.... I was hoping for a Son of Simpleton, Wake Up In A Coma, Funky Bill\'s, or even an Uncle Freddy....what we ended up getting was a great way to ruin an amazing and maybe unprecidented Attraction encore.  The Bugs, a seeming fan favorite, sucked the air out of the encore balloon for me....  But even the deflating last song of the night couldnt ruin the amazing energy that was shared by all at the Iron Horse last night....

The band was tight and on all night.  There were many moments throughout the night where I was tickled, blown away, and even downright owned by each member of the band (including Dobs and Ellis)......

Jordan was throwing in tasty morsels of spacey funk all night...
Tim proved yet again that he is a god amongst mortal guitarists
Adrian was on all night, per usual, and had one particular fill or "riff" that caught me and caused me to almost mess myself (I will hopefully pinpoint it upon relistening to the show)
Ronnie was my MVP last night, throwing it down hard and funky.  You could hear him and his influence all night.  I especially loved when he went down down to rip the bass riffs in Hot For Teacher
Dobson owned my brain with the sound engineering...from the mix to his selective use of echo effects and whathaveyou had me spinning in circles all night....
and last but not least...Johnny Upstate painted the ceiling and bandmembers with a tapestry of color and coordination.....

Thanks to everyone at the Iron Horse for providing the necessary energy for the band to chew up and spit out all over us for a few hours.....

It was great to meet some new people, and hope to meet those that I missed........

Till the next time....
"See you on the other side"

not much more I can say that hasnt been touched upon. But I will say one thing. I may never return to the Iron Horse after Saturday. Nothing to do with the sound, bar, etc. But I just don\'t feel safe in there with only one exit in and out of the place. Maybe I\'m just being a little skirt, but after witnessing the Station fire live on the news 3 years ago, I\'m just very skeptical about smaller places these days.

Oh, and also, two huge thumbs up to Ellis on the lights. A good light show, especially considering he had to do it in what looked to me like a very uncomfortable standing position.

The bathroom situation kills me everytime.

Ellis looked really uncomfortable standing towards the bar but twisting to see the stage. He light up the Iron Horse in the second set whish was really nice.

Where is DerickW\'s pics? Todd\'s pics? Anyone\'s pics?

great show on sat., above average but nothing outstanding.  The lights during the second set were on.  Highlight of the night was that honeybutter, Glady\'s, or Rufus (not best ever rufus but was dam good).  Probably the best VT song i\'ve seen them play.  Hot for Teacher=worst cover ever....just play it instrumental and it would be much much better.  as for the encore, attraction was sick, but you can\'t play bugs for a last song, totally drained all the energy out of the place and left me leaving on kind of a sour note.

place was packed on sat night and sounded incredible.  great work agian with the sound and lights.  spacey, good hanging with ya during a good portion of the second set.  I found the best place to stand was right next to dobz on the corner of the little stair under the balcony so you could hear it clean and see above the crowd on the floor.  And can somebody explain what space city affair is to me?  every time I see them play it I just think it\'s a jam....please help!!!

Pretty kick-ass show, a lot of segues!  I love the way they used Eppy III to tie the other songs together.  It\'s like Eppy III is the base layer for the set but then they keep building additions on top of it.  Really good job with that.  They\'ve been getting more and more into using a song as the basis of a set and bouncing off of it over and over for other songs.  I don\'t think any other band is doing this to such an extent.  Solid selections coming down the stretch of set I with No Regret, Gladys, and The Chase.  One of the better first sets I can remember.

Second set opened up fantastically with the best Honey Butter yet.  Honey Butter was SWEET!  (Loved the Butterfield shout out too!)  I like how everyone\'s comparing versions already, that\'s great.  But know this: The Breakfast really come around with their new originals around play #15-20.  If you think Honey Butter sounds good now, wait until June when they\'ve got 20 plays under their belt, then you\'re really in for heavy thunder.  This is one of the most exciting aspects of following The Breakfast.  When they come out with new tunes, and they sound awesome, the truth is that the tune ain\'t even half of what it\'s going to be.

After the obligatory Amherst/Northampton Phaddy Boom Baddy and a very good Rufus > short drum solo, they closed with Hot For Teacher.  I\'ve got problems with this call.  First of all, second set closer is the showcase spot of the night.  You need to highlight one of your own tunes in this spot.  Van Halen doesn\'t need the props.  You need people to walk out saying "Holy smokes!  How about that [Taboo or Not Taboot] closer!"  Read all the reviews in this thread, nobody\'s getting finished off by Hot For Teacher.  Rather, they\'re talking about everything else in the show.  Secondly, Hot For Teacher can get tossed on the Born To Be Wild/Jumpin Jack Flash/Touch Me pile of cute rock songs that people smile at during the show and forget about 10 minutes later.  They have some purpose because a lot of people like hearing them, but they should only be used in the middle of the show to cuten up the set a bit.  If you have to close with a cover, it needs to be from the Echidna\'s Arf/No Quarter/Karn Evil 9 "holy shit!" pile and definitely not a 5-minute radio version of a song that any old bar band could play.  I also think Bugs is a very soft encore but Bugs has been my least favorite original for 5 years so if everyone else liked it then I\'m fine with it.

Overall a well structured and very well executed show.  The crowd was phenomenal as well.  Nothing like being back in Amherst/Northampton for a Breakfast show.  See you all soon!

*  *  *
P.S.  An incredible Breakfast show took place at the Iron Horse on 9/14/01.  It was 3 days after 9/11 and 2 days after the band got their van and ALL their gear stolen.  It was also the first western Mass show after the UMass Baker Quad show (the band\'s biggest show ever at the time) and it was so completely and utterly packed that a lot of people never got in.  A night to remember for sure.  Read the review here  http://www.thebreakfast.info/modules.php?name=Reviews&file=viewarticle&id=69 (http://www.thebreakfast.info/modules.php?name=Reviews&file=viewarticle&id=69)

BTW, I have no problem with them playing "Hot for Teacher" (although I may be slightly biased!) It\'s a fun song & from what I saw, the crowd & band seemed to enjoy it...

Well I finally got around to listening to the rest of this show and it smoked but I gotta say Hot for Teacher has got to be the worst cover I have ever heard by any band.
