Title: College Football
Post by: Spacey on September 03, 2005, 02:01:17 pm
Anyone a college football fan?

Season just started this week.  Some interesting matchups happening today.

I have been watching parts of the Wisconsin/Bowling Green game which is a shootout.

I really want to see USC beat the snot out of Hawaii.

I would like to see TCU defeat Oklahoma, Rutgers over Illinois today? Rutgers is leading the game right now.

I think the game to watch tonight is going to be the former NFL coach game, Notre Dame (Charlie Weis) vs. Pittsburgh (Dave Weinstadt), this should be an interesting matchup.

UConn opens with a beating over Buffalo, 38-0. I am also planning a trip to go up to UConn this season to see them play West Virginia at the end of the season, as long as it doesn\'t coincide with a Breakfast show. Charter a bus most likely.

Anyone have a team they follow?

havn\'t followed college ball in a few years but I used to be a huge Colorado Buffaloes fan. I used to go out to Boulder 2-3 times a year.....and absolutely loved them. Since then i\'ve kinda fallen out so I have no idea where they sit now, though i\'m pretty sure they suck. But oh well GO BUFFS!!!!

follow ncaa football, but dont really have a fav. team, execpt for maybe Texas, I like them for bball so.  i think they have a god team this yr, with vincent young at qb they will probably have a decent season and hopefully play usc for the national championship.  either way i am looking forward to seeing notre dame vs pitt tonite

what u guys think of Spurrier and the Gamecocks? they were on tv hte other nite, llooked good but no running game

Definitely watch for Spurrier to transform that Gamecock team. He is a better college oriented coach then he would ever be at the pro level. The running game comes in time. Spurrier has never been a running offense type of guy. He was always an advocate for the run \'n\' gun style offense, more often then not opting for the throw. If the Gamecocks have a halfway decent receiving core and a good quarterback expect them to win some big games.

Bowling Green blew their chances to win the game with numerous missed opportunites to capitalize on the other teams mistakes.

Watching USC and Hawaii right now. Hawaii outside of the interception they threw that went for a USC touchdown, has controlled the clock all of the 1st quarter. Should get interesting once the USC offense gets on the field.

Notre Dame and Pittsburgh is about to get underway. Should be a classic game. I\'d like to see both coaches be successful at the collegiate level. Although I am routing for Notre Dam and Patriot alma-mater Charlie Weis.

We\'ll see, CFB is so exciting...

there were some hard hits in college football tonight. the CSU vs. CU straight body-slam and i cant remember the other that was nasty (both top 10).

the only team i make sure to follow is N.D. Their defensive captain -- #9 Tom Zbikowski -- was the quarterback at my high school. i was his back up. he was an all american and US Today\'s best player in the Midwest in 2003. hes got wheels for a white kid.

i like watching college football a lot more than the NFL. i think it has something to do with not being on Sunday. Sunday\'s depress me, always have. that ND game was a surprising blow out, i enjoy watching Wannstedt get bent over. he always looked like a whiney bitch on the Bears sideline, i dont like him.

Expecxt big things from ND this compared to last season. Watching them reminded me of the Patriots offense. Hard nose pound away football. Weis and the ND team seem to have a solid idea and outlook on what they are trying to accomplish.

College FB IMO is better then the NFL because the kids are playing for the love of the game and not for money. They spend saturday trying to get to play on a Sunday. There are more games because there are more schools. More upsets because there is more pride and honor on thew field.

There is just something about watching a non-ranked team drop a top 10.

Virginia Tech vs. N.C. State tonight will be a good game. It will give us a chance to see Marcus Vick, brother of Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, in action. I don\'t think Marcus is anywhere near as talented as his brother. Marcus is also back from a really shitty season last year where he had some problems off the field.

definitely got a point about money vs. love of the game, although both leagues have exceptions at the same time. but overall, yeah i agree.

First game is against Akron, so basically we\'re going to kick their asses. What I\'m most looking forward to is October 1st vs. Notre Dame. We beat them last year on their home turf. The game doesn\'t start until 7 PM, so that means the entire university population is going to be tanked by noon and won\'t stop drinking until kickoff.

I think Maimi is not the same team it use to be. Something down there isn\'t clicking and I believe it is Larry Coker.

As for Purdue vs. Notre Dame, this should be good but watch out for ND, they are going to have a real solid year.

i believe its there offensive line. they got raped all night long. i think miami had a lot more talent amongst playmakers last night. their defense was sick too, but miami\'s front 5 should feel ashamed.. they lost the game.

agreed, i think michigan might beat em up.. if they go downfield often ND\'s secondary wont be able to keep up. we\'ll see, one thing i love about college football is most opinions are jack shit until the game is over. espn has some really good analysts (sp?) that surprise me all the time though.

Post by: Spacey on September 06, 2005, 09:02:43 pm
Gordo, righton about the o-line. If the o-line isn\'t clicking then you have no offense, no matter how good a running back you have, receivers or quarterback.

The one thing about college football and teams that are rivals or evenly matched is that you never reall know what can happen.
Title: College Football
Post by: Gordo on September 06, 2005, 09:08:19 pm
for sure, and i thought Wright looked really good.. tons of perfect balls dropped in the first half, and the TE Olsen made a hell of a tag team with him in the 2nd half. if he didnt get sacked 9 times, i think 6 or 7 in the 2nd half, they woulda put 2 TDs on the board and won by 10 points. but hey, they didnt and thats why theyre 0-1.

btw, FL St. needs some serious work as far as who is taking snaps. i guess xavier lee is supposed to be a stud, though.

I have always been a Miami fan, know just about every player to come out of Miami and where they are in the NFL. Something about that team hypnotizes me. This is the first time since I can remember that I have no idea who is who. Granted I will know most of these guys by mid season, they produce to many pros not to recognize them.

i dont even watch THAT much football or sports or tv for that matter, but when i have time (or strep throat) and can sit down and watch start to finish, i could talk for awhile and i remember names quite well. ask me who the starting running backs are for seeds 1-10 this year, i might be able to name 2, maybe.

When I lived in Massachusetts Sportscenter was on constantly. When I tell you we watched Sportscenter 10-15 daily, we did. We knew everything about sports according to ESPN.

I played football in HS and in college. It is the only time of year I really care about sports. I guess its in my blood.

Title: College Football
Post by: Spacey on September 06, 2005, 10:07:32 pm
Michigan is a 7 point favorite.

Marcus Vicks QB rating after last week is 79.1, he threw for 108 yards on 10 completions in 21 attempts (47.6%). Had only thrown 1 touchdown and no interceptions. Rushed for 31 yards on 13 attempts.

Kid has potential and the skill. Not sure if VT has what it takes. Keep an eye on him. He will definitely pull out a few surprises this season. He has a lot to make up for after last season. He did start at 3rd string this preseason before earning the starting spot.

Just look at Purdue last year. We won our first five games. We were ranked #1? #2? in the Big Ten, and Kyle Orton was going to get the Heisman on a platter. Hell, we beat Notre Dame 41-16 for the first time in a hojillion years on their turf. Then the Wisconsin disaster happened, and we lost the next 3 huge games (Michigan, Northwestern, Iowa). We lost by a *TOTAL* of 14 or 15 points in all 4 of those games. All of a sudden, we\'re on everyone\'s shit list, including the Boilermaker student section. We beat Ohio State and Indiana to finish the season, but it was hopeless by that point. This all goes to show how everything in the NCAA can do a complete 180 and bite you in the ass.
Title: College Football
Post by: Gordo on September 06, 2005, 11:29:29 pm
definitely. thats another reason i think Orton could be a hell of a sleeper for rookies this year. im not saying hes going to have a huge season, but from what ive seen in pre-season (and college) he\'ll hold his own. if Purdue didnt lose those close games his stock wouldve gone way up and i think the Bears made a great pickup. we\'ll see.

Post by: antbach on September 07, 2005, 08:25:15 am
Orton will be a very good QB in the NFL. Purdue tends to breed some good ones. Its gonna take him a few years to get adjusted though as it did for some guy named Drew in San Diego, who I have to say was one of the better college QBs I\'ve had the pleasure of watching on television (always said he was gonna be a star, and even threw stuff at the TV during the draft when Miami passed on him near the end of the 1st round).

As for this years college season, its hard to pick against USC, but I just don\'t think they\'ll get it done in the end. I don\'t have any other suggestions for a national champion though seeing as Texas will blunder against Oklahoma like usual. I do like Louisville as an outside shot for the title game though, they have a pretty soft schedule.

USC can probably beat a few NFL teams on a great day. They are destructive. All of those players are mature and beyond most of the other college kids skill level. They look professional most of the time. Leinhart staying in college another year is very honorable. Not many players would risk that. He has a chance for another Heisman, National Championship and a better chance and bigger salary in the NFL.

Exactly.

Besides, coming into the NFL as a quarterback is a difficult position to handle. Turnaround on QB\'s is very little. Best shot is a back-up for a retiring quarterback, unless the team wants to take a risk and put a rookie at the helm. I think that in the long run this move by Leinhart will pay off. Even if he doesn\'t get a starting spot on some teams roster next year, he will at least prove himself capable of being dedicated.

Ya.

I told ya, ND is the real deal. They are serious and have a mind set. The thing with college football is that an offensive is essential while defense can be alright. As long as ND can score, they will find a way to win. When USC comes to South Bend later this year, it should be a SER game. Texas finding a way to win.

UConn in another rout. Can\'t wait to see them play Louisville at the end of the year.

Great round of games yesterday, lots of upsets!
-ND creaming Michigan made my day. Those bitches are going DOWN this season.
-The Texas/OSU game was just plain fun to watch. That last-minute safety...wow. These two teams should be allowed to play each other more often.
-Iowa/ISU...great game. You\'re right, Gordo, they fucked up and they know it.
-I passed out from heatstroke at Ross-Ade Stadium yesterday during the 2nd quarter of Purdue/Akron (it was 91 degrees outside and I have bronchitis), but after my neighbor found me lying on the ground outside the men\'s bathroom, he dragged me to the first aid room. I had 2 bottles of water in the air conditioning and was ready for more :) We won 49-17. NOTHING can tear me away from Boilermaker football. Nothing.

Texas for being a #2 seed needs to play better football then that if they want a shot at the National Championship. In college football, a win is not a win unless it is a blowout. You can go undefeated in a season and still be no where near the BCS. Especially for a program like Texas, it is important to go out and win convincingly. Yesterday they lacked that evidence. Texas has to beat Oklahoma this year, something they have not been able to do over the last few seasons.

i disagree. they were playing #4 OSU on the road. if they won 23-22 that\'s as convincing as it needs to be. they were also the 1.5 dog b/c they were on the road. i thought OSU\'s defense was extremely impressive, so the fact that they put 25 points on the board is even more impressive and made Vince Young\'s stock for Heisman jump early in the season. hell of a game, definitely no need for a blowout in a #4/#2 matchup.

so they CFB season is almost over, only bowl games left, I believe.

Reggie Bush takes the Heismen, which was no surprise.

The only real thing left to be decided is who is going to be #1 at the end of the season. Does USC take Texas in the Rose or Does Texas upset USC. I for one, truely enjoy bowl season. This years title game looks like one for the books. Is it fair that USC gets the national championship game in their home stadium?

Did anyone happen to watch last evenings Nebreska/Michigan game? Did anyone catch the highlights this morning?

The ending to that game was nuts, absolutely incredible. It would have been really been something if Michigan was able to score after all those laterals. Haven\'t seen something like that since the Stanford band came onto the field years ago. Wow.

I watched the final 5 miinutes or so. That play unfolding live was crazy, it got me out of my seat when the Nebraska players just stood there. They could of scored if the guy who had the ball at the end latteraled to that #15 kid who runs a 4.3 40. Also, there should have been a penalty on Nebraska for coming onto the field, and the game cant end on a penalty (though I think someone said the Michigan players came out too, but I didn\'t notice, and if so they would offset anyway).

UPDATE 2007 COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Virigina Tech just scored, now up 10. Although I didn\'t catch the opening ceremonies. It is definitely a special game and a special season for the Hokies, given the tragedies that happened there last year.

In the meantime, number 5 Michigan is losing to unranked, yet Division 1A champions Applacian St (sp). mid-way thru the third quarter. Michigan just fumbled. Man would this be an upset.

Hope Michigan goes down.

I love college football upsets.

Michigan\'s seasons over. Sucks that you still have to play the rest of the year and you won\'t be able to hit your goal as a national champion. They\'ll probably be ranked 18th next week, if at all.

This season is the reason I really enjoy college football. Every week it seems so underdog is beating a favorite in a long shot game. This season is completely open. LSU learns why you never excessively celebrate on an opponents field, eventually it will come back to hurt you. Although LSU should have won.

Another week, another upset, can\'t wait to see the BCS and rankings today/tomorrow.

This game may have got lost in the shuffle with all the other sports this weekend, but if you saw the conclusion of last night\'s Boise State-Nevada game, you saw an absolutely amazing finish.

Heavily-favored Boise State wins 69-67 in four overtimes in a crazy back-and-forth contest that came down to Nevada missing a two-point conversion in the fourth OT.

This tied the all-time college record for the most points ever scored in a game, matching some Division II game from the 60s in which the final was 104-32. Yikes.

Wow.

Ohio State University is #1, Boston College ranked #2 or #3 depending which polls you look at and South Florida is ranked amazingly high.

I would like to see the BCS with new teams in it. Tired of the USC, OSU, FU, etc being at the top. Lots of good football out there and lots of programs coming into their own.

I\'d support a playoff system only if it was played in decemeber and set up so that the "gold, silver, and bronze" games are all played in traditional bowls - rose, sugar, cotton - on new years day.

The thing i dislike the most about the BCS is that it is still going!

Dude some good football everywhere but the Big 10. Seriously the Big 10 is a joke imo. This is where the BCS is garbage. Quality has been deteriorated but history allows for tons of ranked teams out of the Big 10 going into the season, then they all play each other and have bullshit calculations based on their schedules which appear strong but are really rubbish.

UConn has a realistic chance of being 6-0. Winning the Big East outright. I\'ll be seeing them play Pittsburgh the last game of the season which might be the best game of the season.

I am interested in seeing how the Notre Dame transfer does starting at QB.

Some good college football on this weekend.

Auburn vs. Vanderbilt this afternoon. I\'d take Vandy and the 4 points. Auburn beat Mississippi State earlier this year 3-2. No offense versus a very disciplined team capable of sustaining drives.

UConn plus 7 looks good versus North Carolina. UConn might win games close but they hang in every game and make it close. With a powerful running game comes a passing game that opens itself up. ND transfer leads them to a victory.

Finally, Wisconsin (+1.5) takes Ohio State down tonight. Ohio State hopefully gets physically worn down ad beat up. I plain old hate OSU.

Title: BCS boss likes Obama\'s passion for playoff, but ...
Post by: ChrisPitch on November 17, 2008, 01:46:58 pm
President-elect Barack Obama would like a college football playoff. The BCS\' response? We\'ll listen, but ...

BCS coordinator John Swofford responded to a stepped-up playoff push by Obama that was broadcast on CBS\' "60 Minutes" Sunday.

"For now, our constituencies -- and I know he understands constituencies -- have settled on the current BCS system, which the majority believe is the best system yet to determine a national champion while also maintaining the college football regular season as the best and most meaningful in sports. We certainly respect the opinions of president-elect Obama and welcome dialogue on what\'s best for college football," Swofford said.

Obama said he will use his influence to create such a system.

"If you\'ve got a bunch of teams who play throughout the season, and many of them have one loss or two losses, there\'s no clear decisive winner. We should be creating a playoff system," Obama said.

According to Obama\'s proposed system, eight teams would play over three rounds to settle the national champion.

"It would add three extra weeks to the season," he said. "You could trim back on the regular season. I don\'t know any serious fan of college football who has disagreed with me on this. So, I\'m going to throw my weight around a little bit. I think it\'s the right thing to do."

Is anyone else surprised that there are not marque games no longer played on New Years day?

Specifically, of the 5 games slated, only 3 are between ranked teams.

I would think that Boise State vs. TCU or OSU (Oklahoma) vs. Oregon would be better games....just because both teams are ranked.

Well, I am kick starting this thread again. Been a great year thus far in college football.

So todays news is this:

Quote from: Brian Bennett covers the Big East for ESPN.com
Get ready for a college football bowl game in New York City -- in a baseball stadium.

The creation of the new Yankee Bowl will be announced at a press conference Wednesday morning at Yankee Stadium. The new game is expected to pit the No. 4 team from the Big East against the No. 7 team from the Big 12 beginning in 2010.

Notre Dame could also be involved in the game. If the Big 12 does not have enough eligible teams to fill its slot, the Irish could face the Big East in the Yankee Bowl.

Organizers are targeting Dec. 29, 2010, as the date for the first game. The NCAA will have to certify the bowl, but that is expected to be a formality. There are already 34 postseason games in college football.

The first-ever football game in the new stadium will come next year in a regular-season contest between Army and Notre Dame. Army has a deal to play four games at the ballpark in the next five years, including one against Rutgers.
