Last nights Sleeping Beauty came outta nowhere....
and was amazing...
"but I wont sleep my life away, I\'ll get enough when I am gone"

I voted for Doughboy.  I love the intro and outro.  I get that shiver down my spine like I get when I walk into a casino and hear those bells going off....
I would love to hear a sick live Doughboy>Casino Jam

I voted for "Gravity", though my answer will probably change every time that Real Radio is spinning in my car, depending on the last song that I\'ve listened to...

just got in a full listen of real radio on the way home from Providence this afternoon. having heard the songs live before the album my opinions are based off of the live performances, however, the album does justice for every song on it. For some reason or another Sleeping Beauty chorus has been stuck in my head. Score is unreal with the musical guests, a ser verison. And there is nothing wrong with the Scheme to end the album. Overall every song has something positive coming off this album. Very pleased!
Have the Breakfast ever played a concert with a horn section? Can possibly make them even more funkier!

Not with an entire horn section.....various guests on horns through the years...james albis, wolfy, etc...

I think there should have been horns at Toads.  I was also expecting to see that notation on the Middle East Downstairs setlist.

i\'m going to go out on a limb and say Vera Street.

it\'s not my favorite song on RR. that would be between TGSOT/NR/D5. but this isn\'t about favorite songs, it\'s about favorite tracks on the album, and for me, i really think it\'s Vera Street. here\'s why...

back when the song made its debut, many of you were raving about it. so much so that it almost made me ill.. ;) i was never into it, and always used to just brush it off as a ballad that i didn\'t wanna hear.

fast foward to 2004-2005. the song has evolved, and while i still don\'t particularly like hearing it live, i absolutely love what they did with it in the studio. i think it sounds amazing and beautiful, and really shows off their songwriting abilities. for me, the studio is exactly what this song is needed, and i can now listen to it in a whole new light.

a close runner-up for me is Sleeping Beauty. another song that i\'ve never been a big fan of, and i didn\'t particularly like the early studio version that appeared on the sampler. but the final version really does it for me, and there\'s so many added dimensions to the studio version that makes me like it much more than the live version. great work on this tune.

i do have to express some *slight* disappointment with Score. see, i think Score *should* be my favorite track on the album. i really wanted it to be, because the addition of the horns takes this song to a whole new level. and the horns are absolutely perfect.. definite ToP feel.. however, i don\'t think the playing of the band matches the playing of the horns very well on Score.. the horns on Score are super tight, and i just feel that the band played too loose. i think the end result was good, but could have been great..

now, before this turns into an album review, i\'m gonna stop. :)

I really thought it was an obscure McCartney cover....

Unfortunately, Amazon has not sent me my copy yet... I hope to get it any day now.  As far as all the SONGS are concerned, I think Gravity is by far my favorite.  All of the recent versions I\'ve heard have been top notch stuff.  As far as what song i would like to hear on the radio, I think IG would be the best choice.... I\'ve been saying that this is the song that will help them "blow up".  Vera St is another good one for what it is... not my favorite style of Breakfast, but great as far as ballads go... the lyrics are pretty good, but the one line about intoxicating our sexual side is kinda cheeseball.

i figured it out after reading one thread... there must have been 150 SER\'s that i read within 5 minutes. i havent used it yet, just not comfortable. im sure after my 7 hour trek to see the boys in Ohio ill be spittin SER on here like a golfcourse sprinkler system. it\'s so nice, as i prepare to see this band, to KNOW that im going to get an incredible show. its actually kind of crazy. theyre so good that you dont even have to worry about catching a bad show. am i right, am i right, am i right? theyre so good on an average night, that they could blow away James Brown on his worst night... yeah, eat it trey.

Ok first, Ser will become natural. I just spent the weekend hanging out w/a friend from out in PB country who now lives out here. After about an hour or so of hanging out he says to me "so what the fuck? you use ser now?" I told him yeah \'cause i can\'t help it it just comes out.

2nd due to your newbness I can understand how excited you are but be certain of this James Brown is the unquestioned Godfather of Soul. His worst night would make you pee your pants like a baby because you would not be able to pull yourself away from the stage. His best night would knock you senseless for a week. Best recognize!

Now saying that The Breakfast are the Unquestioned Harbingers Of Rock! They will blow your ass out the door if you are not ready. So ya you don\'t have to worry TheBreakfast bring it every night !!

gotchya, but hey-- you see James Brown recently?? yeah, i will definitely recognize and not disrespect, but he shouldve cut himself off when he couldnt sing more than 10% of the time. it was really just a call out to that scene in Bittersweet Motel.. indirectly i was saying that the Breakfast right now can throw down way harder than Phish in 97 or 98, whenever the Great Went was.  but hey-- im young, always keep me in line when you think you should, i take NOTHING personal and i love being humbled.

Not sur. I think seer is usually 2 syllables (seer- one who sees), so that\'s not it eithet.

Pronounced once syllable, with a long e. Like the first syllable of seriously. Sear.

2 years ago James Brown started 1 hour late and I\'ll tell you this after his 3.5 hour performance I forgot he was late starting. His voice may not always be in form but i\'ll tell you his band was TIGHT and always will be. He may be a crazy coke snortin\' fool sometimes but still brings a great show.
As for Phish yeah The Breakfast do throw down in terms of energy and bringing a tight show more consistently than where Phish were in \'98.

Also realize I post in jest alot not as harsh as Wah but hey I\'m not a prick.

Just a random thought here, but looking at the results so far, it\'s interesting to see that IG, perhaps one of the most played tunes of 2004, is in joint last place. Either we\'ve all heard it too much, or the rest of the tunes are just that good.

I found a Real radio review online at Homegrown:

One of the least favorable comments about the improvisational scene is that most bands smoke live and suck on an album. This not entirely untrue claim certainly crashed down upon Psychedelic Breakfast. I didn’t agree; but I’d always be outvoted by friends who said: “Forgettaboutit. The Who never captured their live sound in the studio until Who’s Next.” Whatever. In the interval between the 2001 studio release, Deuce, the live hodgepodge 2003 test tube of Bona Fide, and Real Radio, came a name change and a reassessment of band goals—management, record company, song craft.

There has been a lot more changes since Bona Fide…for one thing, The Breakfast can no longer take criticism that (a) they can’t write songs without five-minute guitar solos; (b) they write new age, post-hippy lyrics; and (c) they don’t have the balls to release an album during the horribly dark days of Clear Channel entitled Real Radio…and mean it.

Real Radio is one of the best examples of studio usage since moe.’s intoxicating studio/live segue fest known as Wormwood. Every attribute that makes The Breakfast an outstanding, flexible and euphoric live band is showcased here. Tim Palmieri, lead guitarist and vocalist, finally reaches the vast region of his true potential. He’s always been a guitar hero; but on Real Radio, he embraces his vocals with a conviction that equals his musical genius. Songs are flammable, sultry, and, most importantly, expertly honed spatial journeys that lift the listener into euphoric dreamscapes.

Inner Glimpse starts things off with one of Palmieri’s trademark riffs—vocals kick in, song enters garage rock land and then shoots off into an open funk groove. Tempos are explored; genres teased. Meanwhile, not a bum note; not an out of place lyric. XTC recast as a heavy metal unit and, suddenly, Tim is Trey—gear shift: a great front man. From there, the huge surprise of Vera Street. Love to hear this potent melody during a live workout—Jam>Vera Street>Jam. This is the first notice that his hammerlock on his guitar licks has found a mate in his vocals. Initial lazy response would be that this song is a latter-day power ballad. A closer listen reveals a mature introspection that Palmieri will continue to ponder as a theme throughout the album. People pick up and move. Places change. Memories shift, but the mind always remembers where it has been even when its marching through the sands of time. Another step forward for The Breakfast.

Genres are continually manipulated and shaped according to the song’s requirements and that is the great accomplishment of this album. The Breakfast won the Jammys Best New Groove of 2004 and how easy it would have been to continue jamming on into the stratosphere—becoming our generation’s Pearl Jam: heady, trippy, a lot of fun, but what did we do last night? On Real Radio, The Breakfast obviously made a conscious effort to focus upon the album experience as art form. 2005 is suddenly the New Dawn of Improvisational Music—The Dead are on hiatus, Phish…is well…dead, and everyone everywhere is jamming with everybody to showcase this wonderful music we love.

Something odd is happening in our scene. Many bands are remembering that if you can master the studio it only opens up your book of ideas for the stage. Case in point: Sleeping Beauty—slow waltz through some 3D ten acre black light basement—10,000 people grooving all at once. The hip hop percussion of Adrian Tramontano during Beauty is fantastic; not to mention Ron “Bootsy Collins” Spears laying some major groundwork on bass. If this is Palmieri’s album masterpiece, the light must also shine on keyboardist Jordan Giangreco—he’s never sounded better in the mix: wicked force and smart restraint. Doughboy raises more eyebrows as you turn the volume even louder. Haven’t heard this sound from the band either—and for the first time, the listener really feels like each song has segued from the next from some other band to some other band…subtle radio station gesture, but it works well.

Gravity is the gem of the first half of the journey. A 1995 Blur entrance leads into funk and pushes off into jazz playfulness back into Blur and out of absolutely nowhere, The Breakfast slides into a breathtaking jam that patiently unfolds over the next eight minutes. Giangreco and Spears really push the groove while Tramontano plays like Ginger Baker 2005. Palmieri anchors the band with a magnificent wah wah solo from heaven that crunches back to earth with a triumphant riff while Giangreco intersects again and again within Palmieri’s delicious control-and-release motif. The band seems aware of their victory and then moves back into jazz playfulness. Liquid Brain of Zen, indeed.

No Regret—Zeppelin II played through really great speakers—Fairy, Score and Dimension 5 offer the most diverse sequence on the album (other than the stone killer mindfuck of Gravity). Fairy features journeyman musician Jeff Pevar on slide guitar and he doesn’t disappoint—The Breakfast retooled as a bitchin’ bar band. Trey’s on hiatus from the horns in early-2005? Well…The Breakfast makes that situation irrelevant. Jennifer Hartswick from the Anastasio Band, Kris Jensen and the Addison Groove Project horns serve up an incredibly funky workout on a surprise instant Breakfast classic. Palmieri again shines with some tasty leads and colorful horn charts. Dimension 5 showcases Ron Spears on lead vocals and a wonderful Brian May-style solo from Palmieri. If you’re going to dominate your own radio station, why not throw in a riff or two in honor of Hendrix, Page and Queen?

Palmieri wrote the album closer, The Grand Scheme of Things, before The Breakfast was formed back in the late 90s. The first and last thought? What the hell was this beautiful creature doing laying around collecting dust in a Connecticut closet for this long? Remember those massive songs everyone used to enjoy when they heard them once a week on the good radio stations? Remember the good stations? Doesn’t matter. They’re back on this album. The Grand Scheme of Things is 12 minutes and 30 seconds of alternate universe Zappa, Reba on YEM Ecstasy, stellar Giangreco, world’s best drum circle, King Crimson Blitzkrieg, Guitar Overdub Happy, victorious rock thunder and something The Breakfast will always be: a band with a hell of a lot of soul.

Fess Up!

My best guess would be Mike (Helluvahat).  He loves No Regret but also loves Doughboy about as much.

I am having a hard time understanding something and I am soliciting the help of all of you.

Why is gravity the top vote getter?

I like Gravity and love hearing it on the album and live, but I don\'t think it even makes my personal top 10 for original Breakfast recordings.

Maybe if you all explain what you particularly love about the song I will have a better understanding of it and possibly a new angle to view it by.

Thanks for your input.

Gypsy Girl is actually ranked higher than Gravity.  I really think the slow jam in Gypsy Girl is better than the part where Gravity slows down.

I didn\'t vote for Gravity, but I got no issues w/ it up there.  Its a solid tune, one of the best on Real Radio, and always kicks ass live, no matter how often its played.

I think the subject material and the jam for alot of people. The jam in Gravity is for me unusual for these guys. It is so much more along the lines of GD in the jam\'s structure than most Breakfast originals and really how can you NOT like that?

its def the biggest \'jam vehicle\' on the album as far as when its played live.  granted, scheme is scheme, but that is hardly played enough or in combination.  Looking at this year alone, I\'ve seen:

1/15/05 Gravity> Merge> Dig> Gravity
2/5/05 Gravity> Rufus> Gravity> Cut Me Some Slack> Rufus> Cut Me Some Slack
2/19/05 No Regret> Gravity> Flower Punk> Gravity
3/12/05 Gravity (straight up)

I think you get the idea.  It may come often, but when it does, it never lets down.

And for the record Al, what songs on Real Radio would you rank ahead of it?

Maybe it\'s just me but this album doesn\'t come close to what they do in concert. I understand the whole idea of an album not supposed to be the same as live shows but I don\'t think I\'ll be playing Real Radio very often when I have a nice collection of shows to listen to.

TGSOT and Gravity are among my favorites (guess why hehe) and I also like the studio version of Dimension 5. I think Fairy is a great song but much better live than on the album. Sleeping Beauty is pretty good on the album but since the release they\'ve developed it a lot better live anyway.

peaches, im going to give the Stone Church Gravity a listen tonight cuz ive heard its nasty, Gencs has praised it a few times so it must be great. if you love the song that much, download 11.9.05 @ The Tonic Room, easily my favorite version to date (although Stone Church hasnt had a spin yet). this version is smoookin, and ill never forget Cornbread standing outside the window behind Adrian playing the craziest airdrums ever with a big ass toofless smile.. im also a huge fan of the 4.20.05 Escher\'s/Gravity sangwich, disgusting.

But your argument would hold no water as any version you cite is a live version and NOT a track on the studio album. This poll is specific to studio tracks on the studio album Real Radio. So yeah Dave is right.

correct me if i\'m wrong but i think the question at hand is the difference between a track and a song.  While i agree that gravity is your fav song on real radio, you might find that the \'track\' does not do the \'song\' justice and for the sake of argument, lets just say you like the job they did on score with the horns because although you like the \'song\' live, the \'track\' on real radio is much improved with the AGP horn section.  With me? But also, you could just be like me where Gravity is not only your fav song it is also your favorite track because you also like what they did with the song on the album, for example, i absolutely die when they go into the jam after the line "Showing me the gravity - heaviest in this land - lets listen to a band" and ron\'s bassline utterly slows down time and then it slowly speeds back up as they progress and when it comes back in full force tim does this wah\'d out funky rhythm and overdubbs a sick riff that just blows my mind, which live he could not possibly pull off (well i guess he could do anything with the boomerang) but he could not do when real radio was released.  So basically my point being that i think you might be mistaking the word \'song\' with \'track\'.:)

i guess my point is that people are reading too deeply into my exact sentence structuring in trying to explain my favorite track on the cd.... gravity is my favorite track on real radio
gravity was the sickest song at newmarket
these are now two seperate declarative sentences
over and out
10-4
