Title: Join Team Breakfast, and help find a cure for cancer!
Post by: davepeck on July 23, 2004, 11:21:13 am
folks, i strongly urge everyone to sign up for this. if you have an extra computer that is idle, if you leave your own computer on and idle AT ALL, or if you have a work computer that you don\'t use 24 hours a day, please help out!

Download and install the application here:
http://www.grid.org/download/gold/download.htm

Then login and join Team Breakfast here:
http://www.grid.org/services/teams/team.htm?id=9E993C7C-30BF-4294-A15E-290CB3BF30C5

so far i\'ve got the software running on one of my \'spare\' computers, and i\'m going to be installing it on my 2 extra work computers on monday.

note - unlike the other projects introduced here lately, this one has no benefit to this site. i\'m introducing this program here because i\'ve lost and know people who have lost loved ones to cancer, and i believe it this is a great cause. the \'Team Breakfast\' portion of this is just a way for us to see how many of us are uniting to help the cause. please read below for more info.

More Info:

Grid.org is a single destination site for large-scale research projects powered by the United Devices grid computing solution, Grid MP Global. From the Cancer Research Project sponsored by Intel and the University of Oxford to the Anthrax Research Project sponsored by Intel and Microsoft, the Grid MP Global @ grid.org has been put to use for research and analysis projects of groundbreaking scope. With the participation of over 2 million devices worldwide, grid.org projects driven by the Grid MP Global have achieved record levels of speed and success in processing data.

How it works
The Grid MP Global @ grid.org is a virtual supercomputer that can be harnessed to power computational research and analysis projects on a massive scale. By combining millions of online CPUs worldwide to work on extremely large computational projects, problems can be solved more quickly and less expensively than by conventional methods. Now any networked computer can help fuel research and projects that previously may have required a bank of supercomputers or a hundred years to complete.

Join grid.org and make a difference.
To become a member of grid.org and participate in these important grid computing projects, simply download a free, non-invasive software program that works as a screensaver. It runs when your computer has idle processing time. Your computer never leaves your desk and the project never interrupts your normal PC use.

Grid.org lets you make a real difference without donating money or time, with the system that you are using to view this site right now-your home or office PC.

it\'s a pretty small program; < 15MB installed.. it runs in the background, and uses your idle processing time... from above:

It runs when your computer has idle processing time. Your computer never leaves your desk and the project never interrupts your normal PC use.

give it a shot. you can always uninstall..

so basically, my computer now is part of a network that they can use for research?

don\'t really understand it but I will look into it. is it just because they can use my computer for searching data, ie, my computer is now open for research or what? i am very s...l...o..w

so does the computer have to technically be "idle" or does the program run whenever it is on. My computer at work stays on 24/7, so it only idles from 4:30ish PM to 8ish AM. But I just read the last post about no MAC, so thats out.

If my work terminal needs to receive updates over night, would having this system running disrupt that?
-Sorry to have pessimistic ?\'s, but to us computer novices out here this sort of thing is scary.  (Karma couldn\'t let me get fucked on this, could it?)

ACCESS DENIED!

Category- Resource Sharing

I don\'t know what I was thinking in the first place.  I have access to alot of confedential information here.  No way they want to risk compromising that.

I\'ll see if I can sell the wife on doing it @ home.
