unfortunately, i dont have a ticket till 1/1, but i couch toured last nights show and in comparison to the worcester setlists... it destroyed both nights of w00kster... it sucks, but it happens. but here\'s looking to the future!

When Phish feels like turning up the heat and jamming some intense trippy shit again, I will resume buying tickets.

Or when it\'s warm out and I got nothing better to do.

i must say i laughed out loud very much so after reading this.

1/1/11 was the best phish concert ive ever been to.  i was 6 rows behind the stage, and after being within 8 rows from the front center of the stage, side of the stage, and now behind the stage, I can say i prefer begin close to the stage but BEHIND better than the other two.  The view is absolutely amazing and you really feel the energy.  ive also never been to MSG before so it was such a treat.  you can see me in Dave Pecks videos from the show!  Im famous!

I\'ve been a pretty hard fan to win back and up until just a few months ago pretty much wrote them off as a band I\'ll go out of my way to see. They have had moments of brilliance that caught my interest since they\'ve come back.

Watching the MSG run I saw a band on it\'s way to being better than ever. The entire second set of the 31st was brilliant and full of that old Phish magic mixed with some newer tricks. The Ghost is a must hear in that it has the most uplifting jam I can recall in a long time from them. It really has a physical effect on me listening to it on disc I can only imagine what it was like in person.

Phish is not good at playing music and the people at shows are sketchy as hell and the tickets are overpriced.  For your own safety and happiness, find something else to do.

OK I admit, I\'m just trying to drive down ticket demand.  If you like going to Phish shows, the smartest thing you can do is go on all the message boards and talk about how much shows suck.  If you can convince even 5 people not to go, that\'s 5 more tickets that you could end up getting!  And if everyone who wants to go to shows can convince 5 other people NOT to go, then ticket demand will be driven down by 80% and everyone will get choice seats for face value to any show they want.  So yeah, Phish sucks!

has ticket demand been an issue at all last year outside of halloween and new years eve?  they didn\'t even sell out their smallest venues on regular tours, i don\'t see anything to worry about.  and i doubt 5,000 people will come out of the woodwork on the basis of one three day run alone.

which ones?

whether i\'ve gotten preorder, tm or day of show, i don\'t think one show i\'ve wanted to go to has been in the least bit tough(fenway and all hartfords and great woods).  I\'ve yet to really hear any stories of people getting locked out of shows they\'ve wanted to be at, and more often than not i\'ve heard more less than face stories than anything.

Watkins Glen track president denies report of Phish festival

A website called bandsthatjam.com is reporting that the group Phish has signed a deal for a four-day music festival over the 4th of July holiday at Watkins Glen International.

However, racetrack President Michael Printup said that information is incorrect.

Printup said track officials have heard a lot of rumors about a Phish festival, but that it\'s all speculation.

Watkins Glen International is looking at some kind of summer concert, but it\'s too early to even start talking about bands, Printup said.

"We don\'t know who is putting that out. There are a bunch of erroneous sites out there," he said. "We\'ve been working with a concert promoter. But we don\'t even have a contract. It\'s all wishful thinking. We haven\'t even signed a contract with a promoter. You do that first. Then it\'s up to him to see what band he gets."

It looks like the Phish dates are going to drop today.  They are slowly showing up on livenation.

One thing that looks interesting is that they are going to have two teir pricing for the lawn and the pavillion.  $45 + fees and $60 + fees respectively.  I think this is a great idea!

im guessing watkins glen will still happen, but its more likely that they will announce a "late summer" tour like they did in 2009, which will include west coast, watkins glen, and a block island tour.

i agree...last year at spac there was a "ticket tree" in which someone wrapped a giant rubber band a round a tree newar the gate, and people were just putting extras in there and others could take them as they pleased.

yea I guess its a good strategy if you want to worry about it the day of the show and hang out on the lawn with the wooks a mile away from the band

Those extras would all be lawns, which at SPAC means you\'ll be seeing and hearing less of the show than the people at home on couch tour.  SPAC pavs were VERY tough to come by.

I agree you would be foolish to buy ANY lawns at face, but if you get through on TM for seats you like when they go on sale then that seems like a good buy to me.  Phish prices are still as low and reasonable as they come for any band that draws the numbers that they do.

I am definitely torn on whether to do PTBM or not.  PTBM has certainly hooked up some good tickets over the years...but getting lawn\'d at $50 a pop is worse than getting nothing.

Just about everyone I know who put in for tickets has a hold.  except me.   though, all other times i used my credit card, and this time my debit...maybe i still have hope.  I wanted at least one bethel woods....

oh wait correction. they already withdrew the money.  i forgot to scroll down.  $110.80.  Which means I got lawned for either one bethel or great woods.  (put in for 2 bethel and great woods)  Last few times lottery has screwed me over with lawn.

I got seats for PNC in Holmdel.  But none for Bethel.

Bethel was literally impossible.  First time, I got an error (after I had tix in my cart).  Second time, there was none.  So i tried a different day, and nothing.  (This all occurred over a ten min. span)

So, in any case, I wrote it in the ticket thread. I am selling my 2 Bethel Lawns for Sunday May 29th for face.

presale yesterday took all the PAV\'s for bethel, $100 makes you a member, but there were no fees so if you bought 10+ tickets it came out to cheaper than ticketmaster prices

$45 is exorbitant? even $60 pavillions, when viewed next to every other band that plays sheds, is still cheap. neil young is charging $150 for mid-level tix. THAT\'S exorbitant, to me. (although neil\'s always been at the vanguard of high ticket prices)

What is y\'alls opinion on GA tents/Glenn Close tents/Rented tents?

(vs) RV rental?
Title: Phish in 2011
Post by: jking on April 04, 2011, 12:07:44 pm
the downside to RV rental is the overwhelming cost. we looked into them, and its gonna end up being about $2000 out of pocket. now, you may get some of that back (the security deposit), but with gas already at $4 a gallon, it will probably even out in the end.

the rented tents seem weird, to me... but i guess its no different than a rented rv....

ga tents are probably where its at, though the access to bathrooms makes glenn close attractive.

that setlist doesn\'t impress me that much.  but i will have to give it a listen when it comes my way.  Though, I always enjoy a good My Friend, My Friend.

Otherwise, any setlist with bouncing around the room gets a B- in my book without even listening to it.

also what is that... 6 covers in one show?

I doubt I would have been very impressed unless that was one nasty mother of a Stash.

thanks Yoda!

Possum does pwn as a ser bustout.. but in 2010 it seemed like Phish thought this should be their most popular song or something.

Possums are best when you least expect them.

To be honest though, any show with a nice Stash or Melt that isn\'t a trainwreck otherwise, is a good show to me.

....

Then again, that was one of the lamest Stash(es) I\'ve ever heard.... after just listening to it. I think they need a coach to hype them up or something, like..

"okay guys, 2009 was a fair reintroduction, you\'re not all strung out now and you can actually play your songs again now, that was a good start. 2010, you tried jamming again here and there, and a few times it actually worked! So, 2011, we\'re gonna bust it out. You can play your songs, you know you can jam, you just have to do two things at once!"

idk dude

AM I SURE that I actually like Phish?  Is that what you ask me?
Well, let\'s begin with a tale of what fan, or excuse me, "phan" I am not.

I am not a fan that gets my panties wet EVERY time I see a set list.  I can give an opinionated statement that the setlist was fair, mediocre, great good, or absolutely fucking fantastic.

I am not a fan that goes to EVERY single show and proclaims it is the best show I have ever seen.  Nor do I download EVERY single show and proclaim its the best show I have heard and how I wish I was there.   Shows are good, or even great, but I probably saw the best show by Phish in my life in like 2000.

I am not a fan that feels the need to over enthusiastically shove them down everyone\'s throats, because I do understand there are other bands and music out there to be heard. Some bands even put on better concerts than phish on certain nights. *gasp* did I just say that?

I am a fan that appreciates the music and the band.

I am a fan that in my years following the band, I have grown in my understanding and likes of their music.

I am a fan that realizes the best years of Phish are most likely behind us and this resurgence in the last few years, even though a great time, sometimes musically is just great.  Not the fucking fantastic.   Yes, there are some nights that i hear a recording, and I go, "Holy shit".  But they are sometimes far apart.  Maybe I was influenced by a shit load of drugs back in the day, but to me almost every night or every other night was put forth with such enthusiasm and incredible musical prowess.

As for first night Bethel, MEH.  that\'s what kind of fan I am.
I mean, I wasn\'t there in person to "take it all in".  So, who knows, maybe some magical mysteriness was in air and it really was "the best show ever".    But I didn\'t drink the kool-aid, sorry.

What songs would I have preferred you ask??

I don\'t know.  Nothing crazy.  It was already pointed out many covers were played. And yes, we all like Roses are Free.  But I feel like that has become almost a staple.  There are so many songs in the catalogue of their own they could reach out to.  Why do the same old covers, over and over again? Especially the first night of a big weekend.

So what songs would I like in a setlist??

Harry Hood, Cavern, Split Open and Melt, Esther (my fav song off of Junta I never get to hear live and in person), Basically anything off of Junta - I\'ll take a Fee, Golgi Apparatus, Contact, Maze, Axila, Weigh, Scent of a Mule, The Curtain, Camel Walk, Weekapaug Groove....... I really could go on and on.

When I made all those comments,  I hadn\'t even realized they also played my least favorite Phish song, Wading in the Velvet Sea.   To give a side story, to show how much I have grown as a fan, this was like my favorite song when I first got into them in 1999.  Now, that I am older and wiser, it really honestly makes me go blah.   If I want to hear a lovey ballad, I would prefer a Fast Enough for You or Waste or If I could.

tuna, i completely agree. *high five*

Second Night Setlist:

Set One: Theme From the Bottom, NICU, Cities, Halley\'s Comet > Runaway Jim, Gumbo > The Mighty Quinn (Quinn The Eskimo) > Limb by Limb, Horn, Bathtub Gin^

Set Two: Down with Disease > Free, Backwards Down The Number Line > Makisupa Policeman^^ -> Harry Hood > Cavern > David Bowie

^contained Mateca teases and quotes
^^With lyrics referencing several band members\' houses (and Trey\'s favorite show, House).

IMO- Waaaaay Better than First Night.  But have to give it an actual listen....

how can you judge an almost 3 hr show, by a 4 minute song? your telling  that those 4 minutes of meh completely devalues the other 176 minutes of music they played.  seems a bit irrational if you ask me.

Also, who complains about how many covers they play?? They\'ve done that their entire career. Seems to me that there\'s a bunch of jaded "phans" that will find any excuse to bitch.  Get over it.

I completely agree here... bouncing around the room is old school and Im sure they love it. Also, it provides a good moment of happiness for people who may be a liitle too fucked up and not gettin into the music that much. Multiple times I\'ve witnessed that song bring smiles to people\'s faces, so if you hate it that much go take a piss brah.

TO even try and judge a show from looking at a setlist is proposterous. A show with huge classics and intense bust-outs could suck ten times more than one with 10 covers and no bust-outs. To me, its all about the energy inside the show, the quality and execution of the jams, and the overall experience you obtain. Sitting on a computer looking at the setlist and saying it automatically gets a b- for containing bouncing is retarted.

I think tweezer> my friend looks balling. Im gonna download this and listen to this now while my brain recovers from camp keewanee. Save the judgements for the shows youve been too

I don\'t just pass judgement just on bouncing.  the entire setlist.  People i know who were there said it was a mellow night and saturday night was a thousand times better.  Which is what I gathered from looking at the setlists and downloading the shows.

Its an opinion.  Stop getting your panties in a bind.

Okay.  So, when I attend wednesday\'s show, I will give my opinion and I don\'t want any input from you whatsoever.

Just kidding.

I really don\'t care.

Yeah that is an absurd statement. I am just a fan of bouncing due to certain experiences I\'ve had with that song. The whole reason they update their setlists is for us phans to talk about it as we are doing. Its all in good fun. At first glance I thought the friday night looked better than saturday night, but i am not a fan of numberline at all really so thats prolly where that came from.

All in all sunday looked to be the rage and Im ready for mansfield to come so I can get all phishy again

Saturday\'s first set was amazing!  Easily the best first set i\'ve personally witnessed live since they came back in \'09...maybe the best first set i\'ve seen live ever!  I just relistened in the car up to my parents house and back which confirmed it.

Second was also good.  The DWD, numberline, makisupa, hood and bowie all smoked.  You could tell how much they were enjoying themselves during the makisupa.

If this is how they are going to continue to play it is going to be tough to pass up the festival at the end of this first leg.

I think most of you bitching are idiots and really have no clue about Phish or are living in yesterday. The band is older and more mature, the music is going to change. If you go to a show expecting 1994, you deserve to get the w0ok beaten out of you.

In my opinion, all you bitching should go back to listening to that oh so fucking great struggling bar band from New Haven who plays a few times a year.

went to nights 2 and 3...night 2 was absolutely fantastic all around.  Night 3 was a pretty average 1st set minus timber, smoking 2nd set.

2nd row for night two...i must say, after being within 5 rows center for 3 shows now, I almost prefer being a little further back.  OK, the first time was AMAZING because its a whole new ballgame and incredible to see the band up close.  But honestly, I have a big problem with a lot of the people who are in the first few rows.  Its a mix of some lucky fans who got good tickets in the lottery, who i dont mind at all. but there are also a lot of "veterans" for lack of a better term who have obviously been up front for dozens if not more shows and are very snobby, self-entitled, and some just plain mean.  Yeah, we all know antelope greg and his crackhead buddy (they were there as usual), but theres a lot of others and just this general bad vibe I get at times in the front.  Plus, there are a lot of people (usually women), who try to use their friends and connections to force their way into the front and give people who paid for the seats much less room to move.  Kinda irked me, especially at this show.

I can\'t believe you are all in a tizzy about "an opinion" on friday\'s night show.
Glad my babbling means so much.  (not really)
But last time I checked, you all spew opinions left and right all the time.  But me, guess I am not allowed to. Oh well.

if I go to a show, and someone who wasn\'t there (but who has heard a recording) says they thought the show was sub par, I would not jump down their throats.  personally, saturday night seemed the better of three.   But I wasn\'t there.  So what do I know.  I do know people who were there, who felt the same way.  So... who knows.  At the end of the day, it doesn\'t matter.

I will let you know what I think of tomorrow\'s night show, cause I am going to be there.
And if you all feel different, well that\'s lovely.

I swear, some of you just like arguing for the sake of arguing.  Life has to be exhausting for you.

And btw- I am not bitching because "i was not there".  Because I could have gone, was offered, but it just wasn\'t in the cards for me this weekend.
I even had sunday tickets I sold to a friend of a friend.  So I am not complaining cause I missed out. I am not 3 years old.

Based on first listen, I prefer night one as a whole to night 2...

Night 1 - Set 1 completely flowed and I didn\'t really have any moments of "okay, get on with it already..."  Set 2 was pretty much that way until the beginning of Crosseyed & Painless (the jam was sweet, but the vocal portion of it just bores me / don\'t really like TH)...

Night 2 - Set 1 was pretty good... Set 2 didn\'t really do it for me until Hood and on...

I haven\'t listened to Night 3, but based on setlist alone, it looks pretty sweet...

Me and my buddies have 4 lawns for Darien, but it doesn\'t look like we are going to be able to make it. We are definietly going to hit up Mansfield but don;t have tickets yet. I figured I\'d see if anyone here had extras, was looking to trade for Darien, or if anyone wants to buy the darien lawns for a discounted price.

Im afraid those tix are going to go unused and I would rather buy a mansfield ticket off of one of you guys rather than some scalper on stubhub. I would go get them up there but I have work til 430 so I wont be getting up there til later....

Any ideas?

go to mansfield, trade dariens for great woods.  sell the extras.  not too difficult.

If you go to a show expecting 1994, you deserve to get the w0ok beaten out of you.

\'94 is for tourists. Give me some August \'93.

The setlists from the last few years just seem too random to me. The one thing I really enjoyed from the early to mid 90\'s shows was the effort they placed on writing setlists. The way they play a show now is basically \'what haven\'t we played lately?\' and Possum. I feel like that really kills the flow of sets when they\'re just playing whatever pops into their head. Overall, their sound has been peaking the last couple tours which is great. I\'m just over paying $70 for them. Canandaigua sucked a bag a D\'s last Summer and as much as I\'d like to go I don\'t think I can afford Watkins Glen with the wedding in a few months.

How much are fees?  Don\'t they usually inflate ticket prices by another 25-50% for a typical seat?  Face value means nothing when there is so much loaded onto a ticket.

First off, i will begin by saying:  There were *A LOT* of open seats.  every where. My row.  Half full.  People moved up into it.  Looked back at lawn.  it was packed.  Maybe has something to do with the "tier pricing" or something to do with the scalpers.  Or people didn\'t feel like driving to jersey in a storm.  you decide.

As for the music, first set, happy to hear first tube played and then my excitement started to dwindle. I actually took a pee break in the middle of heavy things cause i loathe heavy things and basically the farmhouse album is my *least* favorite.   Came back in the middle of Gotta Jibboo and then loved every minute of the rest of the first set.  Danced my little heart out.  Extremely happy to hear Axila-Split Open and Melt - Suzy Greenberg.

Second set opened with Tweezer during a lightning-thunderstorm.  Poured so hard that the water sprayed us in the seats.  My back was soaked. Actually felt good.  So i can\'t complain.  Led Zeppelin cover of No Quarter (even though I complained about covers before), I really enjoyed.  Overall, Second set was very good.  I won\'t say excellent.  But it was good.  Maybe *just maybe* one of the better sets so far of the tour.  Probably a close second to what I heard of Saturday night Bethel.

As for the entire show, great show.  greatest show? no.  All in all, fantastic time.  Love meeting "new" friends.  Dancing around.  I definitely felt 19 again at one point.    Very disappointed this was my one and only show of the summer.

look who turns into a fluffer when they see a show as opposed to just the setlist?  obviously it wasn\'t the best ever, its 2011.

Heavy Things in the 1st set = B- setlist at best.

I am telling you, when I heard that song I was like Ooooh great. Blah.  If you honestly feel that way (and are not just mocking me), I would be like that\'s a fair opinion.

Second Set made up for the first set completely.

as long as you know the confirmation number on the ticket order, you can always have them reprinted at the venue.  Thats how we used to scam ticketmaster back in the 1.0 days before they could scan the tickets.

First Set - 1 hour 16 minutes 31 seconds
Second Set - 1 hour 15 minutes 54 seconds
Encore - 7 minutes 25 seconds

Total - 2 hours 39 minutes 50 seconds

So far this tour, they have yet to break the 3 hour barrier...

Red stars it is. I have to fahkin work til 4 so I prolly wont be able to get into the lot and settled til like 6. That gives me about 90 minutes to look to trade my dariens/ buy some tix and then look for the above mentioned. Should I just say fuck it buy some tix on stubhub and look for the goodies then worry about selling the dariens after... or just quit my job?

if i were you, i\'d focus on selling or trading the dariens first, its good to get over w/ preshow, and if you don\'t there\'s always after, but its the biggest concern to worry about.  then if through your travels you find any unmentionables, then so be it.  that should give you ample time to finish pregaming and grabbing tix whenever possible.

Holy Shit - Instant Karma!

Instant Karma was probably the low point of the show...Trey just kinda muddled through.

Mansfield 6-7-11: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7WYLU2GW

The rest of the show was very very good, especially that second set.  The Rock & Roll got really far out there in type II territory before coming back together to segue into Mango song.  It sounded like something out of the 2.0 days.  Dark and very trippy.

I like that they are keeping it fresh this tour and changing up the setlists a little bit.  Not only with songs they don\'t always play, but regular staples getting played out of their standard spots.  Mid first set Bowie, late 2nd set Halley\'s and Meatstick, Antelope closer!

Other than Rock & Roll I thought that Trey really crushed the end of Divided Sky.  Bowie was great.  Pebbles and Marbles and Bug sounded polished even though they don\'t get played very often.

By the end of the show you could see how much fun they were having.  Some might say the Halley\'s jam was "aborted", but it was really fun to see them go into Meatstick there.  Antelope had some Meatstick teases (and a quick Bug Tease).  Suzy also had some Meatstick teases and Trey was cheering Page on during the Suzy jam...great little segment and interplay there between Mike and Page.

Overall this was a very strong show and can easily be argued to be the best show of the tour (or at least set of the tour with Set II).  It seems they are capable of just about anything right now...SuperBall is going to be hard to miss if they keep this pace up.

I think Mansfield is probably the worst venue to see a Phish show at... I\'ve seem them over 20 times and each time at mansfield has been less than  desirable.

They played a hell of a show with a lot of highpoints. Possum was sick, divided sky was a hell of a moment, and the 2nd set was awesome except for when bug started, kinda sucked the energy out of the place.

I hate leaving a phish show at 11:03 pm, I was so wound up the last thing I wanted to do was go sit around a bunch of traffic for a couple hours. The lot before hand was dryer than Ive ever seen, given that I didnt get there til around 6. No extra tix either luckily we bought ours before the show online and printed them out.

Unfortunately I witnessed quite a bit of hostilility from people inside and outside of the show, most of them being drunk massholes that like to pick fights for some reason.

I really hope they do hartford by some miracle, complete free for all and i dont have to walk around worried about drinking. If anything last night was a reason to go to Superball.... cant fuckin wait

The only thing I like about Mansfield is the pavillion because it is so small...everything else sucks.  The lot, the security, the traffic, massholes, etc...The magic is gone.

i\'m on the fence for superball

LOL.  I had no problems, and I was there at 4 pm.  Besides the heat, the lot was easy as cake where I was, and the cops were cool as shit.  There was a tank running nonstop by my car for like an hour and a half after the show and not once did the police even come by until the parking lot was empty and it was time for the last few stragglers to leave.  Plus I left the show w/ more money than I had before I bought my tickets there, so that\'s always a plus.  Most MA venues suck security and beer wise(esp in boston and at great woods), so it doesn\'t really bother me.  best GW Phish show since 2000.

a lot of songs.  so i assume not much jamming, although most of those songs are relatively short to begin w/.  buffalo bill and it\'s ice must\'ve been good to hear.

So when you say everything worked out for you in the lot... does that mean you found any goodies before the show? nitrous was everywhere afterward, but before the show no one i was with or met up with even heard someone offering anything. Bought some decent buds but that was it... never saw a phish lot that dry

This was one of those shows that rewards you for being on tour.  It was far from my ideal phish show, but it was great to hear a lot of rarities and bustouts to change things up a bit.  I thought that everything was really well executed and it is awesome to have that excitement/anxiety feeling for what song is coming next.  Mellow Mood! Buffalo Bill!  Dog Faced Boy!  You had the feeling they could pull anything out of the catalog. This show didn\'t really have any monster jams, but almost all the jammy songs in the second set extended a little beyond their standard structure...you could tell the band was feeling it.

After these last couple shows and with Camden next, I expect something special in NJ.  Phish always seems to bring something extra when they play there.

I\'ve really enjoyed listening to the last few shows. Setlists are fun, chemistry seems tight but a bit care-free (which is great), and nothing makes me feel like summer has struck more than the Phish.

Anyone have 6.7 Mansfield dload.. having trouble finding it and I really want to give it a listen as I get stoned, drink some mah-tay, and clean my apartment before Heat-Mavs tips off.

Nevermind! Thanks NickNels, caught it on pg. 16. Good stuff.

Pretty tame first set, but I really enjoyed the second set.  This show is getting a lot of hate for being a "standard runthrough" or having "no experimentation".  To each their own, but what I took away from this show was that Trey is back!  That Hood and Character Zero is the most dialed in i\'ve heard Trey since they\'ve come back.  No fumbling with notes or hitting awkward chords.  He absolutely ripped apart both of those.  His hands were moving so fast it was incredible.  I haven\'t seen him capable of moving his hands that fast since the early 2.0 days.  While I have been impressed with the overall band dynamic in 2011, it wasn\'t until last night that I felt that Trey was truly back.  I think at this point every member of the band is truly capable of playing just as good as they ever have.  We will see if that will translate into anything truly epic before the end of this tour, but I am more interested in this band than I have been in many years.

Don\'t sleep on Watkins

Thx for the feedback, I fixed it.  I originally had only one b in "Jibboo" and someone pointed that out too.  I managed to get all the data entered with no real spelling errors, but that was a lot of data to go through and I did mess up at least two fake words ("Pa" and "Jibboo") and of course spelling is key on something like this.  I worked really hard to program it to accept as many appropriate alternate spellings as I could think of:

YEM, SOAM, SOAMule, ASIHTOS, BDTNL, Antelope (as opposed to "Run Like An Antelope") and the ultimate one: Colonel Forbin\'s Ascent/Forbin\'s Ascent/Col. Forbin\'s Ascent/Col Forbin\'s Ascent/Colonial Forbin\'s Ascent/Forbins Ascent/Col Forbins Ascent/Col. Forbins Ascent/Colonel Forbins Ascent/Colonial Forbins Ascent

to name just a few.  It took a long time but that\'s what makes a great quiz.  Thx for the feedback!

Nice review Nick.

Agreed that Character Zero was pretty hot, and Harry Hood jam featured some fast Trey fingerwork.

Wish I could be as enthused about the band currently but it\'s going to take more than a few tight jams every half dozen shows.

I do agree it\'s at least encouraging to see Trey playing with some intensity, here and there.

I still think Alpine night 1 last summer is the best and most complete show they\'ve played since their return. I\'ve listened to literally almost every show, kind of sad in a way, but nothing tops 8.14.10 for me still. Sweet setlist, tight jam after tight jam, beautiful segues, just thick all around.

A few people have mentioned needing more time.  I\'m considering upping it to 10 minutes.  I feel that 8 minutes is a fair cushion though.  If you\'re really rock-solid on the lyrics then it only takes 3-4 minutes to type everything out.

That\'s a great suggestion.  Sporcle has a 300-answer max and Esther has about 800 words.  I could make a quiz that provides most of the words and player does fill-in-the-blank.  Designing that could take forever though.  I\'ll put it on the list, thanks!

I really like that idea.

I was thinking, it may be very hard to but, to name all the songs phish has covered.  Might be more than 300 though...don\'t know...

I upped the Reba quiz to 10 minutes per popular demand.  You\'re welcome!

All Phish covers is well over 300, but Top 50 or Top 100 Most Played covers...now THERE\'S a great quiz!  Do you know where I could find that info?  I could go to ihoz and get the master times-played list but I\'d have to sort out the covers from the originals and I fear that could lead to errors.

Oooooohhh...a landmine quiz would be FILTHY!  (A landmine quiz is where you get an automatic game over if you type in a wrong answer.)  Would work for covers or originals.   Tricky part is that you can only input 300 total answers, and Phish have way more than 300 covers and originals played.  But you can always have unlimited answers that don\'t do anything, good or bad.  I\'ll have to think that one through but I like it.

OK I think I got it.  What do you think about this:

Name the top 100 most-played Phish originals - Landmine Quiz
- Name a song in the top 100, get a point.
- Name any song from 101-300 in the most-played list...BOOM! GAME OVER SAN.
- Name any song ranked 301 or lower nothing happens. No point, no mine.

Choose WISELY phan!

Oh this is filthy.  It\'s on the to-do list.  Great idea bro, thanks.

Thanks. Quizzes like that where the editor can choose all the questions and answers definitely take some finesse. That quiz took me by far the longest to make out of all of them because I mulled over which lyrics and songs to choose so much.  The key is to find the right balance in difficulty.  I try to spread it evenly between easy, moderate, medium, challenging, and very hard questions.  Quizzes like that can be made too easy or unfairly difficult and neither of those is fun IMO.  Balance is the key.

Nice callout Fitzy.  You\'re right...although it\'s kind of endearing when people with a common interest look to each other for info rather than everyone fending for themselves with no personal interaction.

Overall, an amazing experience.  Phish still throws a great party, and thank god for that.  We are so lucky that we\'re at this point with Phish.  The fact that they are still playing, playing well, playing all their best songs, and still doing festies is a minor miracle.  I had an awesome time at SBIX and I am eternally grateful to this band for continuing to do things the way that they do.  How many bands can you be a fan of and get this kind of experience with your band?  So few.

Quote from: phish4breakfast;270690

I thought the exact same thing.  Certainly there\'s always been an element of this around Phish; they ARE a drug band after all ;)  But I agree that there seemed to be way more douchey lowlife drug addicts around than usual.  The part that I struggle with is that I haven\'t done a Phish fest since Big Cypress.  I\'m not sure if maybe my memories are naturally skewing towards remembering the positive of old shows, or maybe my 30-year-old self experiences the scene differently than my 19-year-old self did at Cypress.  But I think my memories are pretty well in tact and I am sticking to my opinion that this particular fest definitely had more douche-baggery than the old fests did.  I believe that this represents a change not so much in Phish\'s scene, but a larger societal change in which people tend to regard others as obstructions and adversaries rather than as potential assets and delighting in each other.

Here are some examples of what I mean:

-At Big Cypress and Oswego (and the Berkfests, GOTV\'s etc. of the time), I would always bring my saxophone and walk around at night finding jam sessions.  People always brought instruments and played music at fests, and the jam sessions were very communal and made up of different people who brought different instruments.  At Cypress I got into 2 or 3 jam sessions every night and I didn\'t have to look long at all.  I could always expect to find people playing music with strangers at fests.  At SBIX this never happened and never would.  Now everyone sticks to their own space with their own friends and generally regards their neighbors as nuisances or worse...which is exactly what I would expect.  Drum circles are another example of this societal change.  All jamband fests used to be drum circle crazy; random people just taking delight in each other.  At SBIX, not one drum circle.  Not even close.  I\'m not sure that the concept of a drum circle even exists anymore.  A drum circle involves interacting with the strangers around you for the satisfaction of the interaction itself, and I don\'t think people are wired that way anymore.  I could see communal music happening at something like Break-fest where half the people already know each other.  But at your average fest where everyone is surrounded by lots of strangers?  No way.

- Another example of this was simply in my interactions with the people camped around me.  I initiated friendly introductions but the responses and overall interactions all ended up as halfhearted, token gestures that even bordered on adversarial.  At previous fests these interactions tended to turn into long conversations and positive relationships for the rest of the fest.  But that\'s just not what people want these days.  Although my mannerisms were nice, I actually was being kind of rude simply by virtue of ignoring the social standard that you should just leave people alone without even saying hello because being left alone is usually what people want.

I could go on about some specific douchey actions that I witnessed, but I feel that isolated incidents like them could happen at any fest in any era.  I\'m more interested in things that highlight the larger changes in society and fest-going in general.

Anyhow, I still had a great time and even though I just wrote twice as much about the negative than the positive, SBIX was awesome and I\'d do it again in a second.

I completely agree with you on this.

And btw, douche-baggery is one of my fav words to use when describing a certain percentage of the population\'s actions.

I personally encountered very little/none of this, but i\'m not surprised to see that some of this was out there.  While I had a lot of randoms conversations with other concert goers, I didn\'t really get into any in depth conversation of the music or what people thought other than the occasional "what did you think of last night?"  And the overwhelming consensus was very high praise.

I once used to love to discuss Phish\'s music in depth, but in general I try to avoid it.  I never mind letting people know how much I enjoyed a show when asked, but I prefer not to pick people\'s brains too much these days.  There are just so many different ways to interpret their music and often times opinions are heavily influened by circumstantial factors that are effecting that person that day.  After over a decade of listening to their music, it has become so personal that often times it is particular hard to convey the feelings and emotions a particular show/song/set meant to you.  And sometimes when two fans are discussing the music,  you take for granted the subjective nature of the music and what it means to the other person.  What someone might feel different about a piece of music than you, because it has that personal connection, the other person can come off as douchey.  So rather open myself up to that, often times I just avoid it.

My Superball experience was probably very unique.  We had a tent in the Great Tent Rental, which i\'m convinced was the best spot at Watkins.  Low traffic and very close to the concert field.  Large amount of space between tents compared with OK/ND/SD/AR/etc...camp grounds.

I will try to give a more expanded review later, but I thought this was the best 3 consecutive days of phish i\'ve seen live.

I go to small fests too and I enjoy them as well.  They do tend to be friendlier.  On this level they are better than a Phish fest.  But there are many, many ways that a Phish fest cannot be topped.  I would be careful to haphazardly characterize other fests as "better".  Phish throws an awesome party.  Different fests have their good points and bad points.

Ha!  That is a good analogy.  I only decided to do SBIX a little over a week ago and found out last minute that my buddy had gotten a Great Tent Rental.  At first I was not too excited about laying out some extra cash just to have my tent set up for me, but it turned into so much more than that.

Almost everywhere throughout the GA camp grounds (even VIP i heard) people were camped on top of eachother.  I think this is partially due to them shutting down parts of the camp ground when they expected a low turnout?  Great Tent Rental and the surrounding "tent only camping" had a ton of space and easy access to flushing toilets (which no more than 30-40 or so people were consistently using throughout the weekend) and showers 50 yards from out tent.  Plus unlike the general tent only camping, we had our own personal parking lot right next to our camp site.  I\'m sure we missed some of the randomness and ridiculousness that came from the car camping area, but it was totally worth it to have the amenities we had and the ability to have a quiet nights sleep.  We spent a good amount of time exploring the other camp grounds, but home base was awesome.  If phish ever does another festival again, I will absolutely be doing the tent rent again.

I can but hope! Last two tours they did, for the first I\'d only just discovered them the day after they played London and in those early (for me) internet days, missed out on the next tour as it was sold out. Then came the hiatus...

Show was sick nashty! If you\'re wondering why the \'encore\' is so long, Trey came out and said normally they have a curfew but UIC didn\'t give them one.

btw, I am UIC alum. Shit really tickled a special nerve.

I watched the VT flood benefit show in a nice couch tour party situation and I must say I haven\'t seen Phish play that well since 3.0 or maybe Albany 2009

not that I\'ve followed them that closely this year since the last show I saw in Mansfield was played piss-poorly

but it was great to see the band play so well again. I read some reviews and was surprised to see some people hating on this performance! Anyone got a soundboard link?

I can\'t believe how great the last Denver set was. Easily my favorite Phish listen as far back as I can remember.

bdfreetuna, have you given this set a spin yet? I have NOT listened to any of the VT benefit yet, but will when I get the chance in the next few days and expect great things based on what happened in Denver.

Seriously this 9.4.11 2nd set is really something special imo. It just keeps rolling over and over in my day to dayze and just makes everything seem better.

the vermont show was the tightest ive ever seen them play.  pretty much a flawless performance.  didnt really like the song choice but there were some highlights  (caini > dwd > slave).  would have been nice to hear a yem or curtain with that tightness but they played a pretty generic setlist which was the only dew about the night.

Can\'t believe thread went 5 pages.  I stopped halfway down page 1 when the OP self\'d himself by making LDZ the first song he cited.  Ugh.  Way to pull out something from the bottom 3rd of PB\'s catalog that Tim didn\'t even write.
