Black Sheep of the tourney (based off first games): facistic People\'s Rebuplic of Korea - Did anyone else watch how they held the explosive brazlian team in check for 60 minutes?
Otherwise, I am cheering for Germany...though I wouldn\'t be surprised if Argentina won.

I\'ve been following it pretty closely with some friends from work. Were actually gonna do brackets once they get down to the elimination rounds. I would also agree the that the Korean(North I think) did a great job of limiting the Brazilians... how about the Ivory Coast/Portugal game? That was another good one. The announcers made a comment to the fact of "Ronaldo would fall with a puff of wind to his back." They\'re such actors!... and by the way go Germany!

north korea, albeit played well against brazil ain\'t making it out of the first round with the group they pulled. surprisingly, i thought south korea is a huge underdog to make it far at the moment. i hope portugal can beat north korea and at least tie brazil so they can make it to the round of 16. and yes, i don\'t cheer for usa. portugal gets my loyalty.

I can\'t stand the Germans. Just pray they don\'t take an early lead in knockout rounds, you\'ll be in for one boring fucking football session. I also hate the Italians, regardless of my lineage, for similar reasons.
I\'m cheering for Spain first, Mexico second, Portugal third and the US fourth. Spain has a handful of my absolute favorite players (Xavi, Iniesta, Villa, Fabregas, and of course El nino). Their midfield is easily the most creative and they have by far the most attractive overall style of play imo. They have also never won the Cup. That being said, fuck the Swiss! I showed up an hour early to work just so I wouldn\'t miss any of the game and the it kind of fucked with my day. They should\'ve won, had way more opportunities but just couldn\'t connect. They\'ll move on though, I\'m still confident.
I cheer for Mexico before the states because I\'d rather see my Mexican cohorts go ape shit for every goal than my Americanos flip to baseball games after golf clap celebrations. I also don\'t really care for any US players.
And as far as Portugal goes, I would love to see Ronaldo produce a highlight reel for the ages deep into the tourney. Fuck all the haters, he\'s a footballing genius. There really isn\'t a weak characteristic to his game. So strong in the air, a free kick wizard, passes that would confuse Steve Nash, and just a general killer instinct to score. Unfortunately, Igzy, the Portu squad isn\'t as good as he needs or deserves to win it all. Of course they could go on a run, but I just don\'t think they have the depth to match a lot of teams late.
I\'d also like to see Argentina make some noise, and Chile looked fucking great today. Much quicker and smoother than I expected.
Go Spain!
I also think the ball IS making a big difference. FIFA was hoping for more goals with a "faster" ball, instead they get a "lighter" ball that\'s much more difficult to control.

yeah, it is unfortunate, but really, he should\'ve known better than to throw a kick at the opposing player, even if it didn\'t actually land. now his team had to finish that game a man short and he\'s banned for the next game which will most likely knock Nigeria out of the tournament. you gotta think about those things before you let emotions take over.

and the US has a big game ahead. the whole group is do or die which makes everything so entertaining. i loosely supported England going in because im so familiar with all of their players, but now want to see them get bounced. not sure why, but im over it.
and spain, ohh sweet spain, please show up and do what youre capable of. if they somehow finish 2nd theyll have to face brazil (if brazil finishes 1st) in the first knockout round. id like to prolong that match up until the final 4, but first they have to win to even move on. its a strange feeling caring so much about a team\'s success that i really dont have any personal connection to other than loving their players and style.

If this was the World Baseball Classic or Olympic Basketball or any other international competition, I would cheer USA first and foremost. But my mother is from Portugal, my uncles(one of whom was an all american soccer player at Keene before finishing college and going to play in Portugal), who taught me everything I know about soccer are from Portugal and anyone who\'s ever coached me or I\'ve watched soccer with as a youth were all born in Portugal(Go Benfica!), so excuse me for not being Patriotic in one international competition. I bleed red and green.

my grandfather moved here to give his children and eventually his grandchildren more opportunity. I don\'t feel like giving a family history lesson, but my family grew up on an island that was roughly 100 sq. miles. they had no indoor plumbing and all 5 kids would have to take 1 bath a week all in the same water. So he did us a favor by moving to the USA and working hard to give us a future, but I\'m not gonna forget my heritage just because USA has a soccer program that most Americans don\'t give a fuck about.
If I was talented enough(as my brother and uncle were, hell my cousin played professionally in europe for a bit) to play in the World Cup, I\'d choose to play for Portugal over USA, which I could based on the regulations.
but i\'m a bad american for not cheering for their soccer squad first and foremost. oh well, leith. deal with it. if you think i should be deported for cheering against my homeland in 1 sport then you\'re just a moron.

why dont you talk shit about dempsey, howard, anyewu and donovan (sort of) for flying overseas to play for European clubs instead of promoting soccer here in the shite MLS?
i just dont see the big deal leith. if the US gets knocked out the nation wont even remember the next day, not the case for basically every other nation involved. they live and die with their soccer teams. i like that and know that soccer is never going to break into the big 3 or 4 sports here.
funny thing is i have found myself naturally cheering for the US each game. i mean, i do want to see them win but i just dont care all that much if they dont.

i grew up a bulls fan and didnt give a shit about soccer. what sparked my interest in soccer were players like torres and ronaldo, not dempsey and donovan. that continues today. come weekends i cant wait for big premier league and la liga games, these are the players that entertain me and sustain my interest for the 47 months the world cup is not being played.
i also dont think the US quality of play depends on me painting my face red white & blue. in fact that shit may have the opposite affect. look at countries like spain and england, crazy amounts of pressure that turns into threats by fans when they dont win. and guess what, spain has never won and england has been dry since the 60\'s. aside from winners, some undying supporters of their countrymen decide its best to kill those who fuck up at the cup.
the world cup is one of the best if not thee best athletic competition of any kind, but its a sport not a war. im going to enjoy it the way i want to enjoy it.

if this game holds, spain has to win both and to be sure win big today. well, if they win by at least a couple goals today and draw with chile, i could see the swiss and honduras drawing. swiss offense is dismal.
friday is gonna be very entertaining. portugal and brazil are both through, but yeah portu wins theyll lock up top spot. no matter what, if spain ends up grabbing that 2nd spot the first round game between either spain/portugal or spain/brazil is going to be thee game to watch. of course a lot of shit still has to happen.
swiss red card was kinda bullshit. that dead ball yellow against chile inside the box couldve easily been a levelling red card. either way, chile is a much better team. much more fun to watch too.

Historical Significance? Oh yeah it was the Portuguese Armada that is remembered in History. Oh and Portuguese is the second most spoken first language in the world due to it\'s lasting significance upon the world from their conquests in the past. You\'re right though if it wasn\'t for you I would most likely be rooting for Portugal as in my own personal experience visiting both countries I found Portugal to be a lot more to my liking.

I was going to let it go but you had to edit and try some historical trash talk which you\'ve already shown you\'re not that g8 at. For your information the Brits drove them from the Channel and chased them from their shores but the storms the Armada ran into on the way home did far more damage than the Brits did themselves. The Brits didn\'t have as much damage as the Spanish because they stayed out of gun\'s range in the bigger of the 4 conflicts which make up the Defeat of the Spanish Armada. Britain may have won the battle but Spain continued to protect and expand their Ocean Claims for generations afterward.

a little let down by the game this afternoon. portugal gave a completely uninspired second half performance. definitely very happy spain won, and shit did they deserve it. villa outshot portugal alone. and i dont think portugal had a single SOG in the entire 2nd half. its a shame these two teams drew each other so early in knockouts, cuz i really like them both. but portu proved they rely on nothing but strong defense and ronaldo up front, he needs some assistance.
looking forward spain has the only sure ticket to the semis, and the winner of brazil v. netherlands is through to the finals. im definitely pulling for a spain/brazil final, but would be excited for an argentina/brazil, netherlands/spain (both teams have NEVER won a cup!), or an argentina/netherlands matchup. fuck germany.

Hot Damn stoked for the Dutch and Ghana is pushing and pushing Uruguay and got a Goal in injury time at the half! Sucks it\'s not the U.S. but to have most of the Continent rooting for Ghana is pretty neat to see/hear. I like Argentina but wouldn\'t mind seeing Germany get by and I\'d like to see Spain keep it going.
