Kung Fu and Chris DeAngelis just announced to play Black Rock Mardi Gras.  I don\'t think exact set times have been announced, but I think Kung Fu goes on early (about 2:30pm) and DeAngelis a little later.

BlackRock Rocks Mardi Gras Celebration is a taste of New Orleans nestled in Bridgeport. A party with a purpose, our fifth annual fundraising event takes place on February 13, 2010. The party starts in the afternoon and goes well into the night. Featuring over a dozen bands and New Orleans inspired food, the atmosphere of Carnival is alive at three venues in the heart of Black Rock: Lady Luck, The Acoustic Café and the Black Rock Tavern.

--- This Year\'s Beneficiary ---

This year’s beneficiary of BlackRock Rocks Mardi Gras will be the Uptown Music Theater of New Orleans. Founded in 2000 by Delfeayo Marsalis, Uptown Music Theatre is a summer arts program specifically aimed at providing junior high and high school youth with musical theatre training. Its “Swinging with the Cool School” educational initiative is geared at young children, many of whom are struggling to express their feelings and cope with the losses and devastation following Hurricane Katrina. Find them online at http://www.uptownmusictheatre.org.

--- Perfomers ---

Delfeayo Marsalis, Brother Joscephus and the Love Revival Revolution Orchestra, Lisa Furman & The Blue Flies, Darian Cunning Band, Renard Boissiere, Johnny Durkin, Mike Falzone, St. Bernadette, Steve Detroy, Sketch the Cataclysm, Tom Crowley, John Torres, Brian Dolzani, Kung Fu, Larissa DeLorenzo n\' The Buttondown Mafia, 930 Moon, Chris DeAngelis & Big Moon.

--- Admission ---

$20 for adults
$5 for teens*
Free for children under age 12*

**Please note - Under 21 only permitted with the presence and supervision of parent or guardian until 8pm at Lady Luck. Under 21 will not be permitted in any other location, nor during any other times. **

That would be a great idea especially since you live back down that way.

I don\'t see myself being at the Doozer\'s set. Wish him the best.

Guessing that it\'s because BJ is more established and fits more of the Jazz/New Orleans feel of the event...  If there\'s open space then they should get more time, but KF has been around for a couple months w/ about 10 shows under their belt.  Of course they\'re not going to get a prime slot...

c.  ITS A BENEFIT

d.  there are like 20 different artists playing at 3 bars on 4 stages.

come on people.  get worldly.  think outside the box.  discover new music.  dance.  support.  have fun.  its just that easy.

and also keep in mind that more than half the artists have been on board /helping to create this event for 5 straight years.  besides.  everyone know kung fu will annihilate.....and prob headline more events in the future.  there is alot of buzz in the rock about kung fu lately....so give it a chance.

I\'m not knocking KF, there\'s some good music being played (I personally need more than 5 minutes of vocals for a 3 hour show to enjoy, but that\'s me)...

FYI...it\'s a scheduling thing, nothing more.

From the way I understand it, they actually wanted to give Kung Fu a headline spot, but it couldn\'t work with all the band members\' schedules.

a.  they flew here from new orleans

they have gigs in the area for the whole month.

Quote from: LBoogie;251891

b.  this is a benefit

exactly my point. its not a brother joscephus show, but they get to play for almost 2 hours.

Quote from: LBoogie;251891

c.  ITS A BENEFIT

i heard you the first time, but paying for musical theatre training for students 1500 miles away isnt how i would like to spend my last $20 on the weekend. if it was for a local charity it would make more sense to me.

Quote from: LBoogie;251891

d.  there are like 20 different artists playing at 3 bars on 4 stages.

i would prefer fewer artists with longer sets for  $10-15

Quote from: LBoogie;251891

you are the one that needs to think outside the box. just because something is fun for you that doesnt mean it is fun for someone else.

Title: BlackRock Loves Kung Fu & Chris DeAngelis
Post by: BlackRock Rocks on February 03, 2010, 01:54:11 pm
Hey yall! - Angel from BlackRock Rocks... I just wanted to pop in and say we are so excited to have Kung Fu and Chris DeAngelis joining the party.

Yes, our headliners are Brooklyn\'s (by way of NOLA) Brother Joscephus and New Orleans own Defeayo Marsalis.  They are each playing for nearly 2 hours.  All of the other sets are local/region bands playing 30-60 mins depending on availability.

Kung Fu, being a new band was a last minute addition given that the schedule was mostly done when they burst on the scene.   There were some scheduling conflicts with members of Kung Fu and were thrilled with everyone\'s interest in playing the show.  We were so blown away by their talent and vibe, that we thought they would be the perfect addition to blow the doors off the room right from the start.

We couldnt be more pleased that this worked out for everyone, and are pumped to kick off with Kung Fu and also pumped for this to be their Black Rock debut.  There is a ton of buzz about the band in this area, which promises to provide an excited and receptive room.  All in all, i think you can plan for some new fans really soon!

Chris\' set directly follows Delfeayo\'s second set, and promises to also be a tasty treat!  I for one cant wait to hear it.

Thanks guys for saying yes, and I hope that plenty of you and stick around for the rest of the day!

keep rockin to the live music...

~Angel~

didnt mean to start so much trouble. each set of kung fu on monday night was over an hour long, but they both felt like they went by in about 5 mins and 1am came way too fast. i just want more kung fu

if the money was going to a better charity it might get me in the door, but im not rich enough to be paying for musical theatre training for students or $20 for 45 minutes of music before going to the oakdale for trey. next year feed people who are starving to death and need food and medicine instead of paying the way for future broadway singers

I don\'t really think that\'s fair Fitzy.  There is always going to be a "more worthy cause" out there...it all depends on your perspective.  Have you ever attended a Black Rock Mardi Gras or met any of the beneficiaries? There are plenty of self-indulgent things the promoters could be doing with the money they collect.  They have chosen a charity near and dear to their hearts.  The festival has been doing this for 5 years now and I\'m sure there are some less fortunate people than us that will benefit from the generosity of Angel and crew.

Even if Kung Fu is the most talented act (completely subjective obviously), that is not the most important aspect here.  It\'s everybody coming out for a good cause.  If you don\'t feel like coming out, no one is forcing you.  No need to shit on something you don\'t know anything about.

I\'m sure its a great cause that will keep a few kids out of trouble nicknels. i was just expressing to LBoogie that i dont really care that this is a benefit show because they are providing the beneficiaries with a luxury rather than a necessity for survival. and only going for Kung Fu is not worth it to me for the price, but i would probably go anyway if the cash was going to something i cared to support. wasnt trying to be too much of an asshole over anything besides the length of their set.

Personally, I am not going because there are too many people asking for charity and handouts these days. Its getting ridiculous.

The poor will always have their lot. Thats my answer to this 2010 The Year of Charity! Everyone gets a handout. Seems like I work to take care of everyone else.

If charity doesn\'t come from the heart, then don\'t give.
I give because I\'m selfish & greedy.
I believe there is a law of the universe...
the more you give, the more you get.
If you cling & dwell on your money, something will come up & take it away anyhow.
Sickness, theft, business failures, stocks crumbling...
Giving to Haiti\'s needs shouldn\'t be a chore.
I\'m glad I\'m not there or any of my family.
If my few bucks feeds someone there for a few days, then my food tastes better.
If I don\'t give something, then my own food becomes poison.
I pick & choose my charities. Most asking for money I don\'t give to.
You do what you can, what feels proper.
If this Madi Gras event isn\'t your thing, then don\'t go.
Evidently, the people putting this event together feel it is worthwhile.

Don\'t forget about this on Saturday.  Kung Fu starts early (2:30pm)

Yup. I forgot. Damn early set times. There goes my plans for the night.

Oh well. At least if I hit up a random bar, women alone on valentines day often drastically lower their standards. So I\'ve got that going for me...

Kung Fu was great today!  nice tight little festy set.   They went on promptly at 2:30 and played straight through till 3:35.  I see big things for these guys on the festival circiut.  They announced a Stella Blues date that is not a Monday, I think it was  3/25 but I could be wrong...

No tapes.  I fail.  It just wasn\'t in the cards.  I wasn\'t even going but got finished with a client in Greenwich early and was driving through Fairfield right at two.  I had to stop!

Thanks for everyone who made it out yesterday.  It really was a great way to kick off Mardi Gras.  Not a huge crowd for Kung Fu, but not bad considering how early on in the day it was.  I ended up staying at the festival through Doozer\'s set.  Great way to start and cap my evening.

Thanks to Kung Fu and Chris for contributing their musical talents yesterday.

that\'s awesome!  Raffle tickets were pulled throughout the day and at all 3 locations.  I was only present for maybe 3 or 4 drawings and there were a ton of prizes.  Really not sure who got what.  Apparently I got nothing.

Kaz has your tickets, so if you happen to need your stub (which I doubt) I can get that to you.

P.S. if your prize happens to be the Disco Biscuits tickets, I would be happy to take them off your hands ;)

Nick Im so glad you and Kaz stuck around for my set. It took the edge off a bit. I really enjoyed the set and the guys in the band nailed all the new music. This new project is really exciting for me. Im planning on booking something, somewhere, asap. Any suggestions anyone?

We were glad to be there.  It is crazy how packed Acoustic Cafe was by that point.  At one point they were turning people away at the door.  I was surprised we were able to find a seat, which was of course 6 feet from the stage...or booth.  I wish I could have stuck around longer, but I left right after your set.  10 hours of Mardi Gras took its toll on me.

In regards to booking other gigs, I would talk to Kaz.  I\'m sure she would be happy to help.  Hit her up on Facebook.
