Only my second Kung Fu show since the first one.....Holy fucking shit that was a crapload of fun.......The jamming going on is super premium shit all around. The Dark Star was ser but the last half of Scarlet Begonias had me feeling like I was on a slew of psychedelic drugs peaking all at once....pffffffft.............
-
hmmm... gonna have to make it up there one of these weeks...

Oh and here\'s my $0.02 regarding the AV Club webcasting these shows.....FUCKING STOP IT. Or at least set it up in a way where if you are within 100 miles of the venue, the webcast is blacked out.......

Here\'s my $0.02: The more exposure the better. There were about 40 people on the webcast at its peak, which is 40 more people that it wouldn\'t have reached without a webcast. I can\'t imagine more than 1 or 2 of those people (at the most) decided not to go because they could watch the webcast instead. As great as the webcasts are, it is no subsitute for seeing live music...and the people that would go out to see live music ON A MONDAY aren\'t going to pass simply b/c its on the internet. Plus its not just for the people streaming it live, it\'s great to have access to an archived copy in case a curious party wants to check it out sometime other than a Monday Night (which isn\'t convenient for a lot of us...this guy included).
From what I understand the room is pretty much at capacity every night as it is, i\'m not sure we could even fit 40 more people in there. I say as long as Matt is willing to stream the show it is doing way more good than harm.

Flounder, I see you point but still think you are full of shit.......its that good that they shouldnt be giving it away for free, let alone broadcasting it to people who are within a respectable driving distance........the internets has spoiled you kids and is helping crush an already destroyed music scene in Connecticut......and pretty much at capacity is bullshit too, because capacity is wooks arms and legs sticking out of windows........and we were nowhere near that level.......stella blue is a tiny venue. capacity is walls bowing because its stuffed with actual people......and i am not against archiving the show. record it and get it up on the internets, but dont just give it away every fucking week.........luster will be lost evenutaully...

Gencs...the only one "giving it away for free" is your mom. What Kung-Fu is doing right now with free shows and internet broadcasts is a marketing strategy, and a good one I think. This band is still brand new and needs to be distributed to as many people as possible. The $5 admission you could charge at the door is peanuts compared to potential they could produce if their sound reaches the right person or promoter (who might not be in attendance on a Monday night in New Haven). Besides $5/head split between the venue and 5 musicians isn\'t THAT much anyway. Plus, at some point cramming people into a tiny venue becomes uncomfortable and counterproductive. As great as the music is, nobody wants to be crammed against a wall with no room to move (although you might be the exception Gencs).
Let them continue to grow for another month or two and continue to get the word out. If they start to get a line out the door, then maybe a $5 cover might be appropriate. Remember with something this special, its a marathon, not a sprint. It\'s not about making the most amount of money in the shortest amount of time, its about reaching the fullest potential.

HAHAHAHAH nice.
so glad i finally got to check out kung fu last night!!
i was very impressed with how many people were there/how many people have caught onto this project. judging by how packed the place was, i think these guys might get too big for stella blues pretty quickly if the crowd is like that every monday. i\'m psyched to see what will happen with all of this.
it was great to see so many faces i haven\'t seen in a while and hear something new and different. i will definitely try to make it to another kung fu show sometime in the near future (especially after having running into an old school crush at the bar who is still a cutie).
-
Flounder, I understand their "marketing strategy", i am not saying dont webcast the show or dont allow free admission. Maybe if I rephrase my point, it will come across clearer. If you are within a 30 minute drive of downtown new haven and dont have a child or nagging wife or husband, watching the webcast is cheating and you should be ashamed of yourself. And the argument about "nobody wants to be crammed up against a wall" is bullshit, go to the fucking ballet or a symphony if you want that.

Steve...I\'m sure at this point you realize that you are more hardcore than most.
Anyway...I think I live 40 mins away, so I should be in the clear.

Im hardcore for my boys because I believe in them and their music........
and for the record Flounder 40 min on a work night at your aging rate does put you in the clear, WITH THE EXCEPTION of when Holly is there because she lives further away than you.......

Anywho this was a sick killer sick killer sick killershow that blew the place up! :burntban:
-
Tonight was really really great.
Gets better by leaps and bounds each week.
100% agree.
Leaps and bounds was my description last week. They really have begun to find their sound.
-
bottom line is it\'s the bands product to give. Right now they are happy giving it away. Who the fuck cares.

I wish I lived in New Haven

Agreed.
IMHO, this is the best thing for them. Adrian told me that people where watching in Thailand a couple weekends ago. Not sure if he was explaining how he liked the webcasts or if there were actually people watching in Thailand. Either way this creates such an exposure that it would take years to without the webcast.
It doesn\'t seem to be affecting anything either.
If it wasn\'t for the webcast the people from Bonnaroo might have never seen the show. Didn\'t make it up last week because of the snow.
-
I support the webcast. i work most mondays and am too far to get there, but sometimes i can get to my house in time to catch the 2nd set!!!
bout to start watchin last nights show- pumped!!
-
I know for a fact the webcast link posted on other boards has gotten people in the door the following week who would never have heard of this project.
It is also awesome for people like myself to connect with this new band from so far away each week.
Big thanks to Matt Vallo for making it happen!
-
I wish Pschedelic Breakfast had live webcasts during their beginning residency at The Brick House. Keep the webcasts going. Kung Fu is barely a month old and they are getting good exposure. Stella Blues has a good crowd on pretty much every monday and it almost feels like a weekend the second the band plays the first note. If anything, change the residency from monday to thursday. The place would practically be packed if it was a free show on a thursday night. Webcast, facebook announcements, show reviews (outside of .info) are just a few ways to get them exposed. There are plenty more ways. That\'s just my two cents, which I was saving up to pay your mom, but she said it was her pleasure.
-
Sorry Steve - keep the webcast going! (You were a big star last night, BTW!)
Don\'t believe that there is the technology out there to regulate any type of online radius blackout. I personally have caught 3 shows live, and the others online. Despite how great the online access is, there is NOTHING like being there live. Once you have experienced Stella Blue Fu, you (and your friends/friends/friends) will always choose live as a 1st option.
Last night, a pretty good amount of people watching online, but never more than 15-20 at one time (and from what I could tell, most were from out of state). During the show, someone posted that they promoted the ustream link on many of the other jamband pages (Phish, moe, Biscuits, etc). That\'s where this project really needs to be promoted.

I have not even gotten past this post. You may have come around.
Steve you are wrong. Really You have no CLUE what this exposure is doing for them OUTSIDE of podunk CT. The reason there is no scene in CT. is because it\'s CT..
No other reason than that.
Get over it.
If there was no webcast going on there would not be the interest being cultivated every monday of people THOUSANDS of MILES away for this project.
Some people not even that into The Breakfast now dig the KUNG-FU and are re investigating The Breakfast.
So in that matter it is a help 2 fold.
As for the people within driving distance well that is a sad thing but I know getting rid of the webcasts would do more harm than good as far as publicity.
The one week there was no webcast people were ser bummed and not just me.
Believe It
-
Honestly i just felt like having some fun with my buddy Flounder.......all i know is that its a great little thing. who knows where the fuck its going but i am glad its got some legs......heres to 2010....go git em boys.....and for the record i was only requesting blackout for local area folks who should come out to the show....really was a bad argument because i didnt believe it myself.......

all i know is....i sure enjoyed working overtime at the firehouse a lot better with some kung fu webcast to listen to....couldn\'t see shit though with that big whistling wook in the way all night!
-
I missed most of the first set, but what I saw was some very fine music. Ventriloquist had some insane energy; the second set took off during Scarlet Begonias and never came back down! Chakrabarty Overdrive 2 is a great song, and sounded fantastic (coulda used some more volume, but whateva). The drum solo came out of nowhere and melted faces. I think manimal eats metronomes for breakfast and shits time signatures I\'ve never imagined let alone heard.
The drive home was treacherous, good thing I was all hopped up on caffeine. Going up 89 in vt was surreal; blizzard whiteout so bad I couldn\'t see my hood at times. I had to navigate by driving three feet from the guardrail cause the outline of the road was nowhere to be found.
Lots of fun chillin with yall, b\'fam sure are some cool folks ;).
I\'ll be catching any/every Kung Fu show that I can from now on. But next up is NYE!!!
-
the webcast is the reason i\'m probably going to make it out to a show soon.
maybe we should ban taping in general. i mean if i can hear mp3s from a couple room mics the next week, why even go to the show? ;)
-

NYE: Timmy circles the stage backwards on a unicycle while playing guitar behind his head and juggling between notes.
