Title: (Grateful) Deadheads for Breakfast(.info)
Post by: bdfreetuna on November 20, 2009, 09:58:39 am
We all know some strange, soul-less, a-tonal music is well represented on thebreakfast.info .

I think it\'s safe for us Deadheads to simply refer to this stuff as "techno". You know, that stuff partially inspired by Jerry\'s midi experiments but bastardized by the likes of Kraftwerk. Computerwelt and all that.

This thread is a social haven from this repetitive hipster crap! Suggested topics of discussion include:

- Hooking up links to your favorite Dead shows.
- Discussing the after effects of that auto-grade nitrous balloon you huffed on Dead lot.
- Bitching about the cost and availability of Further and other GD-based projects.
- Talking about how The Breakfast totally kills it at covering Dead tunes, and your favorite examples.
- Bitching about Disco Biscuits for whatever reason (THIS is the place to do it! ) *
- Telling stories about the w00k\'d out adventures you\'ve had as a Deadhead.
- Discussing price/availability/quality of various heady psychedelic drugs in your area.
- Ticket trades for Dead-related shows.

Or whatever the hell you want! Deadheads represent!

* When bitching about other music, please do so light-heartedly and with sensitivity to others tastes in music, which are equally legitimate as our own. We may not understand it, and they might not understand the Grateful Dead. This is okay. Deadheads should set an example of kindness, tolerance, and understanding!

bdfreetuna, you are my hero.

i, for one, am looking forward to the bitter ramblings of all the aging hipsters who are too old to understand new things, and, in turn, vehemently hate anything they don\'t understand.

People who don\'t like GD are welcome in this thread and should feel free to express their opinions. Deadheads do not get butt-hurt over dissenting opinions. Our music of choice transcends generations and continues to be as meaningful and timeless as ever; thus we don\'t feel the need to try to recruit people into agreement with our musical tastes.

Also, I totally agree with your assessment of one of the primary points of the internet :D

So... in my opinion nobody plays Dead like The Breakfast. Thank God that Jordan\'s back in the lineup to do this proper. Here\'s some of my all-time favorite examples of Breakfast dead interpretations:

Help on the Way > Slipknot! (Daniel Street 2008-11-29)

Eyes of the World (Sully\'s 2009-08-01)

Puppetry > The Other One > Puppetry (UVM 2005-12-07)

Shakedown Street (Mill Street Brews 2008-12-28)

I grew up listening to GD, but they really don\'t do it for me anymore. Everything is just too damn slow and doesn\'t go anywhere.

And who\'s idea was it to slow down friend of the devil to a turtle crawl? I don\'t know years or examples but i have heard some versions that are painfully slow.

The thing about FOTD and a lot of the GD music is you DO NOT NEED any drugs to enjoy much of their canon.

No wonder the kidz and their fancy designed drugs can\'t deal with the GD.

/tuna makes a totally hypothetical note of this ;)

Story time:

So I was at Gathering of the Vibes one year and this flaming tag-along let the words slip from his lips "Bobby sucks". We laughed at him and made fun of this quote all weekend. During the beautiful heady moments of Ratdog my friend and I would look at each other, crack up, and say "Bobby sucks".

Anyway this kid came by later with some of the dudes from P-Funk. They were looking for some doses and for whatever reason assumed we could help them out. Even though our little camp happened to have a jug of rather extremely highly mic\'d "prankster punch" which had kids totally melted and mind-blown all around us, and we were rather spun ourselves from some extracted mescaline we had been gifted by some good family at the start of the festival, we had to tell this kid and whatever dudes from P-Funk... "huh? what are you talking about? I\'ve heard of some doses going around you might want to check out the main drag and see what pops up"... stupid Bobby-hater ended up making his P-Funk buddies walk like 2 miles for nothing!

For the record I do not participate in these kinds of activities anymore, this was a long time ago :P

The Mickey and the Heartbits albums aren\'t too hard to handle, but the AT Reels that are mostly Kesey rapping can get a little old really quickly...  I go through cycles with these guys, but I always find myself going back to 2 From The Vault, 5-22-77, 10-31-80 and 9-18-87...

Yeah...that\'s not really fair comparison there.  The Grateful Dead were also around first, toured for 30+ years, and were pioneers of the jam scene that all these bands are grouped into now-a-days.  Without the Dead there would be no Phish, Disco Biscuits, Breakfast, etc...Besides I\'m willing to bet there have been times in the past where you\'ve heard someone who has no clue about the Dead make some comment about hippy, stoner music, that you have to be high to listen to that made you cringe a little bit.  That\'s how I feel when I hear people like Yoda talk about the Biscuits

I like GD and the Biscuits.  I think the Biscuits are clearly influenced by GD in their jamming style.  The genre is certainly different, but the means of improvisation, establishing themes, is quite similar.  They are two of the only bands I know of that have the ability to bore me to death or rock me off my seat.

Yakity yak... this isn\'t a thread to compare Biscuits to GD or whatever. I created this thread as a companion thread to the Biscuits thread, not as some kind of competition.

I don\'t enjoy the majority of Disco Biscuits I\'ve heard but I know nobody really gives a fuck, so I\'m not going to bash them except perhaps jokingly in a good-natured sort of way. (okay, maybe I have, but I\'m over it... after listening to some extremely heady Grateful Dead I decided I don\'t have time and space of mind for such negative energy ;) )

Actually I can\'t really think of anything less relevant to this thread than Biscuits discussion and links. Pretty sure there\'s a thread already just for that.

nick - i am listening to 1-4-07 right now.

more conversation appropriate though, moe. did a very fun version of Eyes on Halloween.  Personally, with moe.  I would rather see them play PF than dead or phish.  The Breakfast I really enjoy the dead covers more than phish. i don\'t think i have seen them do too many PF covers.

I have listened to this and the other links to the song you\'ve posted.  When they cover the song with out segueing into 3-4 other songs, it\'s not bad, but when I have to listen to an hour of music between Part 1 and Part 2, I can\'t stand it... DBs are good musicians, I don\'t like their music because when they jam, I feel like I\'m in a guido new jersey club in hoboken on a Friday night...  DB bashing was okayed in this thread last time I checked...

And by the way, I don\'t bash TB music... I may bitch about where they\'re playing or the frequency or who they play side projects with, but I don\'t bitch about their music...

Yes we can bash Biscuits in this thread, if we feel it is relevant... but we should do so sparingly and light-heartedly, with sensitivity to others tastes in music which are just as legitimate as our own, and not make a point of it to do so without being provoked. Us Deadheads should set a good example of kindness and tolerance!

edit: Peep the asterisk in the first post. The "rules" as they apply to bashing other music have been modified to reflect the above statement.

And by the way, I don\'t bash TB music... I may bitch about where they\'re playing or the frequency or who they play side projects with, but I don\'t bitch about their music...

I didn\'t say you did.  I was drawing the comparison to the Breakfast.  When someone blindly hates on a band in a public forum it sometimes has the effect of detering potential fans from giving said band a try.  The Breakfast have most certainly been victims of this.

All I\'m saying is that I would prefer people say, "It\'s not my style" or "I\'m not into them" vs. "They are horrible" or "They suck".  Clearly they don\'t suck because plenty of people enjoy their music.

I\'m not going to go back through this thread to pick out all the ignorant things you said about the Biscuits, but you know what I\'m talking about.  You are someone who was never going to like the Biscuits or give them a try, so I would rather you stay silent than bash a band you have no interest in anyway.

After the 11/1 moe. show, a few of us were joking with Al about a bluegrass project he is working on.  It got tied to the Miley Cyrus cover moe. did, anyway look out for Pickin\' on Miley a miley cyrus bluegrass project coming soon!

bisco bashing from the phish bio...

Quote
thought some of you might enjoy this...p. 186-7

"Tom Baggot, the first-generation Phish fan who\'d helped spread the word since the beginning, saw what was happening in the parking lots. By 1998 he noticed a disconnect between the drug-crazed younger kids\' musical wants and Phish\'s less crescendo-filled jams. Baggott was working as a development agent, helping bands hone their act and find a grassroots following. One of his bands was a group out of Philadelphia whose music, he realized, would appeal to those who weren\'t getting spun to the extreme at Phish shows like they wanted.

[in regards to younger fans] \'...They wanted to hear intensity the whole way through the show, and they wanted their drugs served sunny-side up...and when I heard the Disco Biscuits, I was like, \'Wow, this is a band that would appeal to that part of the Phish base.\'

\'...That scene was all about drugs,\' Baggott continued. \'That\'s what that \'Bisco\' scene is all about. I didn\'t really appreciate their music until the first Camp Bisco, when I had the opportunity to take Ecstasy and see the band for four hours, late night...they were awesome that night.\'

Baggott laughed. \'Not to take anything away from the Biscuits, but my grandmother would\'ve been awesome that night on a ukulele probably.\'"

Not for nothin... but unfortunately this thread is serving the same purpose as the other one... might as well merge them and rename it "DB vs. GD & others or GD & others vs. DB" (depending on which you prefer to put first).  I mean if its the same shit thats gonna be said... I\'d prefer to not have to jump back and forth between 2 threads to watch the same debate!

This is not an "other music" bashing thread! This is about our love for the Dead!

On that note, anyone else going to see Dark Star in Northampton tonight?

britney stuff = joke

on 10/31 moe. covered miley cyrus.  they asked everyone who had been to 100+ shows to request a song.  they then turned to jam-nation at large to vote on all of the requests to cull down to a Halloween all request setlist.  one of the members of their crew requested miley as a joke.  a miley cyrus fan website found out and miley cyrus was the most requested song.  surprisingly enough the song turned out pretty well.  i continued on to see them on 11/1 and while hanging out with the band post show, Pickin\' on Miley was created.  it is not real.  although with a bluegrass name that good it should be.  but this is now the subject for another thread.

But I guess it wouldn\'t hurt. I happen to really enjoy the 1972-08-27 show. I have it for whatever reason under the title "The Field Trip".

I: Promised Land, Sugaree, Me and My Uncle, Deal, Black-Throated Wind, China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider, Mexicali Blues, Bertha

II: Playin\' in the Band, He\'s Gone, Jack Straw, Bird Song, Greatest Story Ever Told, Dark Star, El Paso, Sing Me Back Home, Sugar Magnolia, Casey Jones

my favorite live GD related moment was 7/13/02 Phil and Friends at Great Woods.  I went w/ my good friend Aimee and this girl I work w/ Lynsey and it was both their first GD related show.  Right before the show started I snorted a 10th of mahldog and took 3 tabs, so I was rolling my face off for set 1, but as setbreak settled in it wore off and began tripping my face off.

I remember during the Darkstar second set opener, I looked at my friend Aimee w/ the biggest cheese grin and she asked me whats up, all I could get out of my mouth was Terrapin and was in absolute joy knowing that they would eventually play Terrapin Station this set.  I felt as though Jerry had came down from heaven and spoke to me for a second and told me that I had a Terrapin coming my way, a couple songs after they finished Dark Star and dropped it right into Lady With a Fan and I loved every second of it.

7/13/02
I- jam> Crazy Fingers*> UJB*> China Cat*> IKYR*, Patchwork Quilt> The Wheel> The Real Thing

II- jam> Dark Star> Again & Again> THE ELEVEN> Dark Star> Lady w/ a Fan> Morning Dew> Terrapin Station> She Said She Said

Hah! Nice.

Last time I saw Terrapin was @ Up North when Bobby played it, not counting Breakfast NYE 08.

And you would have had to be counting by the strip, not tabs, on that particular occasion :disco: ... as for the mahldawg.... didn\'t even make a damn difference

2002 was big for it

Phil & friends 2 nights at GOTV in Mariaville. One of the better if not best Terrapin Sta. I have ever heard. the place was magical that weekend.

The Grateful Dead were an adventure. It was a driving force to get out and see whats up in a time where you had to network / communicate with real people, person to person. People were more friendly and polite in those days it seemed. It really did have a community vibe to it. It was an "inside" joke so to speak that all the heads were in on.

Finding out about the previous shows or how the boys were playing meant you had a conversation with someone who had actually been to the show. Sure things are certainly viewed through rose colored glasses looking back on it but I wouldn\'t trade it for the world

Their music changed my life forever. It is part of who I am today. I cannot say that about more than about a handful of musicians / composers.

One mans trash is another mans treasure.  I find treasure even in the slow songs that are dripping with feeling and emotion... something you don\'t find often in todays music scene (with a few exceptions).  Alot can be taken from Hunters lyrics if you take the time to listen and the covers they chose were often done better, in my humble opinion, than the originals.  Songs like Sing Me Back Home, Used to Love Her, It Hurts Me Too, JGB\'s version of The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, and so many others gain so much from the boys\' arrangements.  Bob and Jerrys\' guitar playing was soulful and brilliant and Jerrys solos... I\'ve yet to hear someone match them, or his tone for that matter which comes from Jerry, Phil  and Ron Wickershams efforts to get the best sound possible out of the guitar electronics.  Yep, they had a part in that as well.  Just look inside Phils Bass at 3:10 in this video, that\'s what they were coming up with not to mention The Wall of Sound that\'s being set up all around them.

Yeah that would be Jeff Mattson.
I got in a small debate abt how he would fit in DSO this weekend. I was of the opinion that guitar-wise he would be a great if not better fit than John was.

Not surprisingly, been a deadhead since I was 16, so well past my quarter of a century as a jerryfan.

Will be leaving work in a sec to go home, listening to David Freiberg & Co belting out \'Loser\' from last Thursday\'s Jefferson Starship show. It was apparently mooted that it would go on the PERRO album, sessions for which have booted in numerous forms. IMHO, DF absolutely nails it - what it would have been like on an album is anyone\'s guess. The JS guys, with Slick Aguilar on vocals also do a  fine bust-out of Deal, which they\'ve done elsewhere on the tour - and last night it was augmented by Tom Constanten on keys. (Missed the show, but I will be getting a recording, with luck.) Now, that TC, there\'s a character...

Covering the dead as a supplement to your music is one thing, but few bands can actual play only dead music and not come off as a cheesy cover band, like that one that always plays Toad\'s and the singer tries to look like Garcia...

JGB is still a great time, regardless of the fact that only Melvin Seals played with Garcia in a long-running side project.  I got to see a great free show just a couple months ago on Jerry Day.

There are lots of good Dead bands (plenty of crappy ones too), who cares if that is how they wish to spend their time, paying tribute to a great band.

You have a pretty narrow view of the world; imagine how fun your city would be if you were elected mayor.
Title: (Grateful) Deadheads for Breakfast(.info)
Post by: Yoda on November 24, 2009, 02:06:04 pm
It\'s not that I have a narrow view, I\'m just very opinionated and I like what I like...

You\'re missing my point, if it\'s Melvin Seals\' band then call it the Melvin Seals Band, not the Jerry Garcia Band...

I have no problem with people paying tribute, but trying to look like Garcia like the guy from Shakedown does or the way the guy from Riders on the Storm does or even the Elvis impersonators, is a little too over the top in fanaticism for my taste...

And if I was elected mayor, it might not be fun, but it sure has hell would be run respectably...

There is nothing wrong with trying to emulate or follow in the footsteps of a great person.

This is what Jesus, Buddha, Krishna, Jerry Garcia, etc intended. To inspire others to EVOLVE is the ultimate act of LOVE.
Title: (Grateful) Deadheads for Breakfast(.info)
Post by: Yoda on November 24, 2009, 02:15:04 pm
Que sera sera...
IMHO - to inspire is one thing, to grow a pot belly and a beard so that you look like Garcia when you play is a little over the top...

Back to the fact that the Dead made some great music and made a career out of being able to harness that inspiration by having 40% of their catalogue be covers...

I\'m ragin\' your Oakland Coliseum shows here at work today.

Once again, people here at work are calling it weird music.  I told them it is weird because it is over their heads, per usual.

Not a crazy serious fan but have seen them more than i have Phish (that really isnt saying a lot :0 )

good times. I really enjoy the panic fans. They seem to be a cross between phish/dead & ABB folks.

i\'ve seen panic more, too, but mostly because i was ni the southeast during the 90\'s and it was hard to avoid them! hell, it was my 8th show before jb\'s voice stopped annoying me! but, if i wanted to see a bunch of friends all at one place, panic shows were usually the place!

check out the legal download thread. these dead shows and those panic shows are all sbds...

While it is true anyone can be a fan of widespread panic, only the truly unoriginal and most sheep-like of men and women can elevate themselves to the status of super fan or true fan, as it will be referred to through the rest of this little diatribe. There are a number of things that make one a true fan of wsp, none is more important than the rest, the true fan learns to balance all attributes, and exhibit each and everyone when they enter into a discussion about or relating to wsp. The following is a detailed list of things to remember when talking about wsp, if you manage to follow this list then you will surely be considered by all you meet to be a true wsp fan.

1. The terminology:
*acceptable terms for widespread panic: these of course vary by region and time, but any of these is acceptable, The spread, Panic, or the boys . Unacceptable terms: Spread , The panic , WP or WSP the use of letters is restricted solely to writing, writing wsp is okay but saying it is a dead give away that you are either a newbie or a tool
*acceptable terms for wsp concerts, here there is only one option, concerts are shows, any other word is not cool
*band members names: john bell= jb
dave schools = schools
Todd nance = todd
Domingo Ortiz = sunny
John Herman = jojo
George McConnell= Gmac
Michael Houser= Mikey

2. The scene: While panic attracts a hippy scene as a true panic fan it is your duty to hate hippies, try coming up with demeaning terms for them like Wookie, but never take credit for inventing them, because if the term sucks hell you didn’t make it up. Also speak derogatorily of the scene at any and all opportunities, because you aren’t there for the scene, which by the way is getting worse every tour because of all the lot/tour rats and wookies.

3. Drugs: true panic fans do drugs but don’t buy drugs in the lot, because drugs in the lot are bad, you have your own dealer, and you bring your own drugs to the lot, it is important to remember that true fans do drugs, but not so many that they start acting like a hippy and most importantly they don’t do so many drugs that they cant remember what sucked about a show.

4. Beer: it has to be expensive and micro brewed if possible, when talking to other true panic fans remember your favorite beer is fat tire, this is the only great beer out there, it is okay on occasion to say Siera Nevada or sweetwater are your favorites, but if someone else mentions fat tire always nod in agreement that fat tire is in fact superior.

5. Hating Other bands: True panic fans only like panic, but they have to be well versed in other bands so as not to see uninformed, so here is list of bands that suck, and more importantly why they suck, simply use this chart when talking about other bands and people will think wow this guy is pretty smart and definitely a true panic fan
*String Cheese Incident- they are gay, noodle around, and are soft
*Dave Matthews Band- used to be cool, but have since sold out and are now horrible musicians
*moe.- these guys had potential, back when they were on further, now all they do is noodle, always mention that they play a mere 6 songs a set
*Phish- first and foremost mock their lyrics, but then mock ther fans, too many wookies.

6. Liking Other bands; as a true panic fan you must admit to likeing other bands, but only certain bands and they most either be closely related to panic or the dead, or a new band that no one but you has heard of
*Government Mule: schools plays with them
*Phil and Friends- warren plays with them who is in govt mule whom schools plays with, also lesh was in the dead, this makes phil and friends a solid choice for a second favorite band, but if you claim to have second favorite band make sure to clarify that they are no where near as cool as panic
*Grateful Dead- this is an easy one because everyone who likes panic and wants to be a true fan HAS to like the dead
Karl Denson/Dirty Dozen Brass Band/Robert Randolph/Blodkin/Vic Chesnutt/Jerry Joseph- these bands play with panic a lot so you should like them, you must like the first three, and the last to it is okay to dislike, but the dislike cant be as adiment as your dislike for the bands true panic fans hate

7.Gmac- true panic fans can either hate or love Gmac, but they cant be apathetic on this issue, if you hate gmac you have to constantly say that gmac is a b rate player and it should have been Jimmy Hearing or Sam Holt, gmac lovers have to talk about how gmac fits in with the band, and needs time, in either situation you have to honestly believe your opinion towards the band actually matters.

8. Randall Bramblet- true fans are glad he is no longer playing with the band, but always take the time to say how cool it was of him to step up and help the boys out

9. Sources - true fans always have a source close to the band so that they can be the first to start a rumor, even if you don’t have a source pretend like you do and just confirm the rumors other people have said their source told them. Not having a source is as uncool as liking the string cheese incident.

10. What Sucked about a show - this is a tricky topic not to be ventured into by the new true fan, saying a song sucked or a show sucked before anyone else is dangerous, because other true panic fans may disagree, and a show only sucks when a lot of true fans say it does. Saying certain songs sucked is a much easier route, to determine if a song sucks use this simple formula, the first 3 times a song is played it can’t suck because seeing a song played for the first, second, or third time is cool, after that the song sucks until it has been in the rotation for at least 2 years, only exception to this rule is cover songs, that is unless the cover song is on the most recent album. An example ‘Sometimes’, this song sucks, even though it is a cover it sucks because it hasn’t been in the rotation long enough and most importantly it was on the new album. This brings us to the second rule, songs on the newest album suck, and will continue to suck until the next album is put out at which point those songs suck, occasionally a song on the new album wont suck, but it is okay to say it does, such as Big Woolly Mammoth. Third, some songs will always suck due to overplay, such as All Time Low, and One Arm Steve. Songs that were played before 1996 can not suck, because they are old school. If a show contains many songs that suck you may consider the show to suck, but be careful because even one rare original or cover can make a show a classic, also consider the venue, shows at traditional panic venues like oak mountain or UNO Lakefront Arena can not suck.

11. Shows that are Incredible. Saying any show was incredible is also dangerous because it may appear as though you are neither discerning nor cynical . That show was the greatest show I have ever seen should never under any circumstances be said, because great shows are determined by the masses, not by individuals. Again it is safer to stick with songs, so here are some basic rules, all covers are good, Steve Winwood and Warren Zevin covers are AWESOME, and the rarer the cover the better, here it is important to remember that true fans memorize every stat on the everyday companion, and if you don’t know what that is you will never be a true fan, any cover in medium to heavy rotation is good but never great, example ride me high. Original songs can rarely be great unless they have been played over 500 times, example: space wrangler. Overall the true panic knows that only one or two songs per show can be great, so don’t say that more than 2 songs were great.

12. Number of Shows you have seen; Never reveal how many shows you have actually seen unless it is over 100, and if forced to always frame you number in a small time period, for instance, “I have caught 29 panic shows in the last 9 months” while you have only seen 29 shows you saw them in a small window and the person you are talking to may be lead to believe you have seen more than 29 shows.

13. Why you go to shows; for the music, no other reason, if you are there for any other reason you may come off as less than a true fan

14. Show trading/show collection; in order to be a true fan you must posses a huge collection of panic shows, and you must listen to nothing but panic shows, then when talking about panic try to reference as many shows you have on disc as humanly possible

15. Talking to other fans; always assume your panic shlong is bigger until the other person/people prove to you they are also true panic fans, and know that while there can be smaller panic fans than you there can be no bigger fans, just equals because you reside at the top of the plateau of panic fans as a true fans

Follow these steps and you will soon be the envy of every panic fan you know.

And all this time I thought GMAC was the finance company that held the note to my mortgage...

*Phish- first and foremost mock their lyrics, but then mock ther fans, too many wookies.

i had a buddy with tix/plane tix/hotels for both of those tours, too. he ended up having to eat the majoirty of it the first time, and just said what the hell and went the second time. he did the tour, just without the band/shows. his wife was so mad about the first loss that i don\'t think he told her til he got back that it had gotten cancelled again...

I\'m still living in hope panic will tour the UK again.

Doing a tour with a band is always a risky thing, especially when it involves the element of "crossing the pond" and a tour maybe not going ahead. Jefferson Starship\'s short early Summer tour got cancelled last year, but I was able to cancel hotels OK. Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams are over in January - right at a time when bad weather might make travel a problem. Similarly, the way things are economically, there is always a chance the tour might get pulled. However, this time, they are playing some really out of the way places, so booking accommodation , which is possibly non-refundable, is a risk. However, I don\'t want to miss the shows - already had to cancel going to my usual 4-5 on the JS tour just gone, due to redundancy (now resolved), so am well up for a tour. Umph are doing jitd again, so that will probably mean a few UK dates, and as for Phish, if they come...

Guess I am going to have to be VERY nice to \'she who must be obeyed\' in order to get my furlough signed! :)

They generally play for $20 - $30 out here but I get to see \'em play free on each August\'s Jerry Day (officially recognized the city of SF).  This past year was pretty awesome.
