Just wondering if this residency \'super-group\' will get any jambands/jambase.com press (either before or after the 1st show would be awesome!)

So seeing as Kung Fu consists of half of TB, does this mean that the thrust of effort/new material will move to this endeavor or can we assume that TB is still the priority?

Fine... But when was the last time there was a push from fans to get TB a residency by getting heads in the door?  My point is, use these efforts that you\'re spending on a side project for the actual band...

Galenas...it could be that I\'m blind, but I just went through the Chase post/ calendar and I don\'t see a time.

And a lot of company\'s block facebook... so maybe make the time more visible in the calendar so block heads like me can easily see it.

You misuderstand my comments... This site is a fans site for TB... It seems that fans are more excited to support the side projects as opposed to the actual band... Without the band, this site does not exist... And I may not get to many or any shows this year, but is that the "only" way a fan can support the band?  I support the band before individuals... If these guys move towards a side project that\'s not essentially a one-man bar jam or a cover band, I might not bitch as much about the band to side project ratio...
Title: Kung Fu!
Post by: jking on November 18, 2009, 11:40:11 am
you\'re right. no one ever talks about how hot the recent shows are, nor about how excited they are for upcoming shows that they can actually make. and turn out for a monday night side project is almost certain to be exponentially better than a weekend breakfast show, so we need to quell that right away! and we fans should certainly not get excited, especially if its a side project of some of our favorite musicians playing songs/genres that some of us really like. just remember, if they ever have a bruce diesel experiement, you\'re not allowed to show any enthusiasm for it. this is the breakfast fan site, after all. what members of the breakfast do in their spare time has no place here.

You are absolutely correct Yoda in asking why this fanbase gets so excited for side project stuff and does not push for Breakfast residencies.

I have seen maybe 3-4 posts even relating to a Breakfast residency anywhere.

I believe it\'s due to the fact that we KNOW that this is the only way these guys get any Publicity is by playing with people that actually tour the country and can maybe tell others they play with about these awesome cats in podunk New Haven that kick so much ass.

It\'s sad.

Yes Leith,

But also I imagine the guys in the band actually enjoy branching out to try different things. As musicians, you know?

Side projects rarely excite me much, partially because they\'ve historically been on weekday nights and taken place out of my weekday driving range in lower CT, and partially because The Breakfast is such a seriously incredible band I also wish they could devote all their time and efforts to this.

However, there\'s really nothing that can be lost even to a hardcore Breakfast fan by side projects. The way I see it, as long as it\'s not cutting into the Breakfast show schedule, playing with other musicians in diverse styles can only help add to the FUSION that takes place within The Breakfast

Plus I can only imagine the guys get an itch to do something different and probably get paid for it too. If they can do that without splitting up the band or minimizing "The Breakfast" .. more power to these fine musicians and best of luck in all their ventures!

Especially considering that this Kung Fu! thing seems aimed towards something jazzy? I really like when The Breakfast busts into jazzy feeling jams and if this has any influence on The Breakfast I think it might be a good thing.... probably especially for fans like you and me who shit bricks at the idea of The Breakfast becoming another "livetronica" act and firmly believe FUSION IS BEST ;)

No I get WHY they do it and yeah they probably do get paid better. No actually I know they get paid better for side project gigs. It\'s one of the things that pisses me off so much is that The Breakfast gets the short shrift EVERY fucking time.

My agreement w/ Yoda was over the fact that people do get pumped more for say Timmy Tour than shows it seems and have never really pushed for a Breakfast residency at all.

They should have been at Daniel Street every week for the past 2 years or since they stopped touring.

Really.

A number of familiar faces will share the stage as part of the new group Kung Fu. The band will bring together guitarist Tim Palmieri (The Breakfast), keyboardist Todd Stoops (RAQ), saxophonist Kris Jensen, bassist David Livolsi (bass) and drummer Adrian Tramontano (The Breakfast) for an evening of covers, improvisation and, eventually, original material.
“It’s lethal funk,” explains Palmieri. “It’s music smart and strong enough to defend one’s self, or art’s self. I love this music.” “
The group will kick off a residency at New Haven, CT’s Stella Blues”:http://stellabluesbar.com/ this Monday. The residency will run indefinitely.

That\'s exactly my frustration...

The last mention that TB gets on the site is the fact that Tim and Jordan sat in with TLG back in April...  No mention of the FF or the fact that Live As Is was released...  I really hope that the guys aren\'t paying their promotions person too much, because they\'re not doing anything to earn those greenbacks...

I don\'t know if people really get more pumped for Timmy Tour. I\'ve never seen a TT show though, due to it\'s weekday New Haven-ish-ness, but I imagine it\'s regular weekly schedule and hanging out at a pizza joint with Bfam and hearing some pretty diverse and fun setlists by Mr Tim Palmieri himself would be something to get excited about. However I doubt there are really many people at all who wouldn\'t be even more excited for a full-force electric Breakfast show. Just the impression I get, anyway.

Sounds good to me! Lethal, hell yea! Funk overdose!

Actually sorta sucks that I doubt I can make it to any of these shows unless it\'s a holiday or something.. I know I\'d have to probably apologize to Mr. Stoops for bashing his one performance with The Breakfast.. I got nothing against him though and I\'m sure it was just a rough night with a lot of new complex material to try to hang with. And I really wanted Jordan back in The Breakfast at the time. Oooh , looks like I win!

Their promo person is shit.

The only way this band gets any promo on Jambands.com is due to the diligence of Josh Kroop who should just bite the bullet and take the management reins again imo.

why bother with a breakfast residency? any and everyone in ct that is gonna see them already knows about them. a residency in nyc, boston, maybe. but daniel street? at least with side projects, people who may dismiss the breakfast as a band they saw ten years ago that is still playing the same sized venues today could see something new and perhaps be convinced to check out the breakfast once again.

i mean, there\'s only so many time you can play the same hundred mile radius and get new fans after this long, ya know?! may as well switch it up some and try to grab n00bs that way...

Yeah I guess you\'re right no one would come to a residency at Daniel Street because it\'s in CT.

Where is Stella Blue\'s?

No way momentum gets built after the first few weeks at Daniel Street and calls go out to other local CT. musicians like the ones in Kung Fu, Blah Blah, and folks that have sat in with those Willie Waldman projects in the area.

No you\'re right it wouldn\'t be that great.

As for a residency in Boston or NYC well that would be harder due to having to work around job schedules like Jordan\'s that may not be there w/ a CT. residency.

And I still meet people from CT. that have never heard of The Breakfast.

so you mean like the side projects we\'re not supposed to get exited about?

and people in ct who haven\'t heard of the breakfast are going to start hearing about them playing at a little club that doesn\'t even have this gig on its website?

you know as well as i do that a ct residency isn\'t what the band needs to increase its fanbase. you\'ve argued it a million times. think of people here who are already fans and still can\'t/don\'t go see them each time they play. if the band played every week, on a weeknight, how much do you really think the crowd will grow week to week? or, they can play with new and different people that may attract new faces to bfast shows. the band can\'t play toads on halloween or nye because the crowd size has dropped too much. do you really think playing every week at the same location will increase the crowds? or, as i think, that it would get rather disheartening once the die hards run out of funds in a couple weeks and the crowd at daniel street diminishes? if the breakfast as a band wants to gain new fans, they need to do it outside of the well worn circuit they\'ve been on. since they can\'t for various reasnos, at least expand the potential audience by playing with new people as often as possible.

NO I agree with you now a residency would probably not work out great that\'s why I posted they should have been doing it for the past 2 years or when they pretty much gave up on touring.

I mean really the local Dead cover band Electric Waste Band plays every Monday night at Winston\'s. Now each Monday is not packed but they always make cash and many folk I know make it the START of the week.
This has been going on for 18 years.

These guys all play in other bands and/or have day jobs like being Doctors and lawyers.
Every week for the past how many years has Tim been playing a solo show?
You\'re telling me that a Breakfast show EVERY week at the same place would have never taken off?

Fairfield.  When Raq split he moved south to the Carolinas.  Did his time down there and decided he missed the north east.  Tried to move to NYC but the schools blow and it\'s too pricey.  Found a place in Fairfield County and is happy where he is.  Good schools, centrally located...  He\'s from North Haven I think so this is not a stretch from the norm.

Fairfield.  When Raq split he moved south to the Carolinas.  Did his time down there and decided he missed the north east.  Tried to move to NYC but the schools blow and it\'s too pricey.  Found a place in Fairfield County and is happy where he is.  Good schools, centrally located...  He\'s from North Haven I think so this is not a stretch from the norm.

ohhhh, that makes so much more sense now!

Kung Fu: "It\'s Lethal Funk"

Tim Palmieri
Some of today\'s most innovative musical minds – who have played with the likes of John Scofield, Warren Haynes, Dave Matthews Band, The Breakfast and RAQ – will be pushing the boundaries of improvisation each week at Stella Blues in New Haven, CT.

Calling themselves Kung Fu, this new super group consists of Tim Palmieri (The Breakfast/guitar), Todd Stoops (RAQ/keys), Kris Jensen (sax), David Livolsi (bass) and Adrian Tramontano (The Breakfast/drums).

"Everyone is a monster," says Palmieri, who is a regular in the New Haven music scene. "This music is going to be funky, mature and powerful."

Consider it the martial arts of the music world, if you will.

"It\'s lethal funk," continues Palmieri. "It\'s music smart and strong enough to defend one\'s self, or art\'s self. I love this music."

Kung Fu will be playing a mix of covers, improvisations and eventually will be writing original material as well.

I don\'t hate the idea of the new project... My continued stance is that if TB is the band that we all love and want to see succeed, then new songs and all this effort should be there trying to make this thing work... If it\'s no longer the thrust of effort then let the fan know that is what\'s going on rather than keep saying that TB is the band and these are side projects...  I\'ll give the new thing a listen and if I don\'t like it then I\'ll part ways with these guys as musicians, but will enjoy TB through the 10+ years of studio and live recordings... I\'m here for TB, not Tim, Adrian, Jordan or Chris\' individual musical endeavors...

Dude, I feel you on the "The Breakfast rules and I hope it remains the main focus" aspect.

But don\'t you think that\'s a little harsh? So far there\'s no indication that Kung Fu! will take anything away from The Breakfast.

Adrian is obviously as prolific as he wants to be when it comes to writing new songs. Dangle and Jordan aren\'t in Kung Fu! so they can devote their songwriting to The Breakfast, right? As for Tim I don\'t really know how much music he\'s writing at the moment but the guy can obviously learn an almost unlimited catalog of material, so I don\'t think anyone has to worry about Breakfast being forgotten.

Look at the upcoming Breakfast schedule.. it doesn\'t look like a band that\'s being put on the side burner to me. Listen to their most recent shows. Doesn\'t sound like a band that\'s winding down their efforts to me either.

I think Tim and Adrian probably have plenty of energy and music to spread around. And new material written for Kung Fu! will have to be written in the context of that band\'s arrangement. That\'s not to say that The Breakfast might never play any of them?

I mean my little motto is "Long Live The Breakfast!" but I just don\'t see this as a threat to what we know and love I guess. I think if anything it\'s just gonna make Tim and Adrian explore different styles which can only benefit their creativity in the context of The Breakfast.

to be added to the according to yoduh thread~

apparently info about the members of the breakfast should not be discussed on thebreakfast.info

you\'re just close minded and living in the past dude. if you only want to discuss the breakfast, go to that band\'s website. this is a fan site that includes forums for discussion about other bands as well as Side Projects of the band. sorry if you don\'t like it, but until you start your own board, get used to everyone else discussing ALL THINGS breakfast and not just the myopic shit what you want discussed.

I for one love The Breakfast, and would put them before anyone when it comes to seeing a show, but I also support any decision that these guys make musically. If Kung Fu is to be the main focus for the next couple years, so be it. Maybe they\'ll actually be able to break through to a "normal" music fan\'s ears through Kung Fu and make way for the sometimes too complex stylings of The Breakfast. Whatever happens happens, but I know I\'ll be seeing these guys as long as they are playing and whoever they\'re playing with. P.S. Maybe they\'ll even be able to make it to the west coast on a more consistent basis...
Title: Kung Fu!
Post by: Yoda on November 19, 2009, 02:01:17 pm
Sorry, but here\'s the breakdown of song writing:

Tim - writes a majority of the tunes
Adrian - writes some of the tunes
Chris - as far as I know wrote 2 tunes
Jordan - I don\'t remember him writing any tunes

It\'s fair to say that I live in the past when it comes to The Breakfast, but it\'s not that I haven\'t seen them in years, it was last year...  If Kung Fu is in fact going to be the focus for the next few years, the fans that are here no will either stay w/ KF or have moved on...  My loyalty is to the band, not the individuals... And the fact that there\'s been 1 new song in several years and all this effort plus hinting of new material for the side project should frustrate the fans...  If all you want to hear TB play is the same songs in heavy rotation, enjoy... I think they have the potention to create new music for the old and new fans...  If you don\'t care about that then so be it...

Synergy
Tunage
Existential Funk
Metropolis
Rush
The Sound
Living Daylights

So not quite "1 new song in several years". I don\'t even think that is a complete list.

And didn\'t Jordan write Doughboy and Fairy? Off the top of my head, anyway?

I\'m just not really that frustrated. Sure they haven\'t come out with a TON of new material lately but the way I see it the band just played one of their all-time best shows @ Mill Street. So I\'m not exactly frustrated.

Their old songs haven\'t really gotten old for me either. Just Overexposure, I\'ve come to not be so fond of that one :P

It\'s healthy to try new things.

These projects will keep them sharp as players in a new way.
Jordan and Chris are always out playing with other people.
That\'s what it\'s all about. Keep involved in what you do and explore!

has anyone cleared this with the band?  Not to be a sour puss, but Todd says he\'s never heard about it, Dave says he\'s never heard about it, and while it\'s ok with Tim 99% of the time, I\'m sure he\'d appreciate being asked.  The taper who assumes is the taper who gets denied.

Entirely fine, krispy.  I had initially wondered what the taping policy would be for the residency since there are others involved.  Best thing is to be prepared with gear and ask all concerned parties.  If you\'re in a position to ask Dave and Todd, then that would be great.  We should also ask if the venue us OK with it.

Are there any audio recordings available for download of the 11/30 and 12/21 shows? 12/21 was last week but just wondering if I missed it somewhere on this board.

my 11-30-09 matrix recording has no guitar in the mix, so it will not be released, but fitz has a nice sounding audience recording you can ask him for a copy.

12-21-09 -I recorded this show and it sounds good.  I just got the set list yesterday from Dave and will work on making mp3s soon.

Who should I ask permission to tape a Kung Fu show?  I have the number for Stella Blues, figured I should get prior approval from them; should I also ask one or all of the Kung Fu members?  I don\'t plan on releasing the recording; I know the a/v club pro\'s have that covered.

This would be my first taping of a show, figured it\'d be best to practice with onboard mics to learn about venue acoustics.

Great things coming from this band and great things afoot for them in 2010!
Nice to hear more originals creeping out and the versions of Breakfast/RAQ tunes are really unique.

The usual, curling up into the fetal position and crying myself to sleep until the next Breakfast gig comes........   But seriously if you want to know I have have been working on putting out an album of original songs for quite some time now. Its just a matter of having enough material to choose from to put together a cohesive record. Those of you who heard me at the Space in hamden got a preview of some tunes. I take my work very seriously so I hope you guys can support my musical endeavors. I\'m always playing gigs which I have posted on this site and will keep posting so dont be shy and come and check it out. Me and Dave Livolsi got some bass duet stuff in the works too. Also, I dont label my other gigs as side gigs either, they are all equal in importance to me. Music is life.  By the way I\'m playing at the Owl Shop tomorrow with Animal and Lesiw so come on out.  Oh yeah, make sure to go to Daniel St on Thursday

i saw killcullen on monday and i\'m still trying to wrap my head around it. this must have been festering in stoops\' head for a while, because there\'s no way he wrote it since the inception of kung fu. big long song. the chakrabarty overdrive 2 from 1/4 killed it. i was very impressed with that version.

I think this is a great and honorable move on the band\'s part.  I\'ll make every effort to get to this show.  Ken\'s right, the Haiti quake is an unprecedented disaster, too much details to add here.  Please check out the situation (i.e. google) and see what you can do to help...
I should be on a plane to Haiti with a shovel and band-aids, but can neither find a way to do it nor a reason why I shouldn\'t be able to.  :rip: Haitians.
This actually bothers me far more than Columbine or even 9/11 (watched that live less than 50 miles from the city).  These two tragedies had all the help and support they could handle (after the event), whereas people are still trapped in rubble and many areas haven\'t even received medical or food aid, and the scale is far larger.  Alright, I\'ll end this here for now.

We\'re talking six times the amount of people at Woodstock.
Haven\'t eaten, drank in days. No shelter, rotting bodies all around them.
Few working roads to get supplies out.
Gangs forming and attacking others for what they got.
Babies being fed dirty water. Human waste & urine all around.
Sweltering heat, most of your family lost, or dead. Hardly any medical help.
This could be a few levels below hell.

Last night was my first Kung Fu live.  I was very impressed with the band, music, and bar.  I am really enjoying the new tunes and can\'t wait to see where this band is in a year or 2 considering how well they are playing after just a few weeks.

We went over to Owl Shop at break to check out DeAngelis\' "side project".  I was impressed with the 15 minutes or so we saw over there.  Amazing how much great music there is on a Monday night in New Haven!

It was also great to see such a big crowd turn out to support Kung Fu and the Haiti relief effort.  I believe the total raised was something like $778!

Thanks again to everyone who showed up (either in person or online!) for the benefit edition of Kung Fu live at the Dojo last night! Thanks to all of you, we managed to raise over $900 towards the relief effort in Haiti! Glad to hear the sound was to everyone\'s liking last night... started doing a separate stereo aux mix for the webcast and archive last night, so keep me posted with suggestions and constructive criticism! Stella Blues, Seth Adam, and I will be continuing our efforts to help the relief effort tonight at the Tuesday Open Mic, so feel free to come by and contribute either your musical ability or moral support! The show starts at 8 with the Seth Adam Trio, open mic from 9 to 10, Brian Dolzani from 10 to 10:30, and then open mic for the rest of the evening. Hope to see you all there!
