Title: The 2009-2010 NBA Thread
Post by: skalnbyc on July 08, 2009, 06:56:30 pm
I was hanging with some old school Lakers fans in Southern California this past weekend and heard Ron Artest is headed to LA.

Also heard today that Boston has Rasheed Wallace.  Did the Celtics make a trade for him?  I don\'t feel like doing ESPN research when you guys have the answers readily available. Did Rondo end up staying or leaving? TIA

Artest signed for three years. Wallace was a free agent pick up. Not sure about Artest as a Laker, great player (esp. defensively), but his \'tude doesn\'t fit the purple and gold imo. I think Wallace to the Celtics is a great fit though. If everyone stays healthy they\'re going to be so tough to beat in a 7-game series.

i\'m still bitter about artest in, ariza out.

i know artest is a great player, better/more proven than ariza, yadda yadda, but what a fuckin\' tough guy to root for.

and the lakers don\'t win a championship without ariza this year. no way. so that irks me. he saved their ass a LOT in the playoffs.

but unfortunately, we don\'t have control over these things, so i\'ll just hope that artest becomes a fantastic laker, and hope for the best for ariza, except when he plays against the lakers.

Any other teams beefing up via trades?

Gordo, did I hear that Gordon is out of Chicago?

I forgot about the Ariza part of the equation.  I know Artest has a history of shuffling around the league & bouncing off every year or so whereas Ariza could have been an anchored Laker.  Either way, can\'t wait to see how this turns out.  Artest would probably be serving a life sentence somewhere if not for the NBA.

I\'d love to get to cheer for Artest.  dude is solid gold.  luckily we\'ll have SHEED which in itself makes the Celtics the most gangsta team in the history of professional sports.

If they had lost Ariza w/o getting Artest I would be right there with you.

However w/ Artest and Bryant The Lakers now have the best defensive backcourt in the league.
Finally The Lakers have a player that will not be lazy on Defense and will not allow his teammates to do so either.

Artest is a beast on defense and no slouch in the scoring deptarment.

Ariza was a major cog in the the recent Championship yes but L.O. is way more important to sign and Artest is a proven player.

As for his wild ways, that is no problem for Phil and his staff.

The Lakers Front Office did what they needed to do to give the team the best chance to repeat as NBA Champions.

Gordon went to Detroit. I\'m okay with that. Although he was our only stone-cold scorer, you can only watch so many 30+ point games w/ZERO assists and a counterpart also dumping in 30+.  I\'m really gearing up for the free agency summer of 2010. There\'s gonna\' be some crazy shit going down with the list of superstars open for business. My hope is that the Bulls pool up their money they freed up with Gordon, get rid of a couple players after next season (esp LUOL DENG\'s overrated bitch ass) to pocket more spending dough, and lock up Dwyane Wade. The Chicago bred backcourt of Wade and Rose would be unstoppable, and the frontcourt would have to start falling into place within a couple of years. Look out for Noah to improve drastically too. He\'s serious about basketball now, and his last 2-3 months of this season were very strong. And I like the fact that he\'s hated by opponent cities.

Totally forgot about the Shaq-Lebron deal till someone mentioned it at a dinner last night.

Sheed is a GREAT pick up. Grant Hill is on the way too.

As for the Lakers fans I think you\'ll like Artest.  He\'s the Rodman to Kobe\'s MJ. He\'ll be on best behavior.  The Celtics proved this with Marbury. (though his game was lacking he was a boy scout in Boston) There\'s nothing like an established core of stars with shiny new championship rings on their fingers to keep a knucklehead in line.

4 teams stand out as contenders.

Celtics- With Rondo\'s improvement and Rasheed Wallace on board the Big 3 is now the Big 5.

Cavs- Shaq only needs to play 20 minutes a game. He\'s still dangerous as 2nd or 3rd option. Not to mention they still have Ilgauskas who could really dominate another team\'s back ups

Lakers- Odom is a moron if he doesn\'t re-sign

Spurs- Jefferson is everything Michael Finley used to be when SA was dominating.

I think Denver caught lightening in a bottle last year, and will be hard pressed to get the same quality of play out of everyone.

Orlando was better with Hedo than they are with Vince.  Not to mention Howard beat the C\'s last year w/o Garnett. Now he may have to deal with KG AND Rasheed.

The power houses all got better. It\'s going to be a fun season in the NBA.

Rondo is not a free agent.  There were trade rumors, but none that made any sense from the C\'s pov.

The Celtic\'s FA\'s are Mikki Moore and Marbury (who cares?) Leon Powe (Wallace has his old minutes and then some) and Glen Davis (restricted free agent) who I hope they can resign.

Great post man. Very hard to disagree with anything here. I\'ve been swayed with Artest\'s signing in the past 24 hours, and I think you might prove to be on point with said reason.

Lakers start off with a bunch of home games which should give them a nice cushion in what will be a tough Conference this year.
Boston still sucks and their fans will be disappointed 2 years in a row. It\'s gonna be awesome.

Starting early this year? It took you until February (http://www.thebreakfast.info/forum/showpost.php?p=219054&postcount=68) to chime in in the 2008-09 thread.

I\'m not a big NBA fan, but all of the work I have been doing for Yale women\'s hoops lately has me in the mood to watch basketball again. It\'s also great for watching on the treadmill. Since hockey is nowhere to be found on TV, basketball is the only sport with a guaranteed four straight minutes without a commercial.

Let\'s go Knicks?

What can I say, I\'m on top of things this year... I don\'t hate basketball in general, just the NBA... See, I\'ve got baseball for another week, pro and college football through the end of the year and the devils several nights a week... What bothers me the most about basketball is that once this time of year rolls around, it seems like Mon-Fri that\'s all that matters in the sports world...  My daily shit with the corn in it is more interesting than the most dazzling dunks of the day...

For what it\'s worth after just five games, the Celtics are unbeaten with wins by 33, 31 and 28 points. Their only win by less than double-figures was a seven-point win at Cleveland.

Also, the Knicks still blow.

Lakers w/o Gasol are 5-1 and Artest is fitting in nicely.

Complete and utter domination of the suns tonite and without Gasol.
78 points in the paint w/o Gasol.
NO Kobe needed in the 4th w/o Gasol.
Just another Laker Victory
W/O Gasol
Oh and the Lakers only carry 13 players which means pieces can still be added to assure the Title defense.
This season is going to be very special for Laker fans.

I will admit your Lakers are having a strong season thus far.  Though, its very early in the season.  (So far 13-3)    Celtics are 13-4, which on paper makes it seem like they are having the same season as the Lakers.  However, I feel like the Celtics need a huge energy burst.  Some of their wins and losses have been painful to watch.

Be prepared for more pain watching them as your team is awful compared to the past few years. They got lucky the fat went to Cleveland and will blow that team up and they will only need to worry abt Orlando and the Hawks() in the playoffs.

Wow tonight\'s 3rd quarter was some of the most entertaining basketball I have seen from this team. Everything they wanted to do they did with ease and they got to having some fun.

Best record in the league at 14-3.

Also the first time I actually noticed a team play against the Taco promotion(Lakers score at least 100 and hold the opponent to under 100 everyone gets 2 free tacos from Jack in the Box).

Everyone got Tacos.

Your prediction is far from lofty and very unclear. They COULD get very CLOSE to the END? Not a miracle to win it all... MAYBE even the EASTERN CONF FINALS?

Soooo are they winning next round or not? Clearly you don\'t think they will win the Eastern Conference Finals, and you seem doubtful (or a coin-flip at best) about their advancement to them. My point is that you don\'t have a gut feeling, or you need tums to clarify what it is exactly.

On a sidenote, Bulls relationship with Vinny Del Negro ends tonight. And jesus how about Milwaukee. They have turned it on late. At this point I\'m rooting for Phoenix, Ok City, and Utah (Denver was my top pick going in, buut..) in the West, and want to see Lebron come out of the East. I\'m sooo fucking tired of the Spurs, can\'t stand the Mavs, and the Lakers officially bore me.

All in all, hockey/bball playoff season has been great so far.

well, the celtics handed that win last night to the cavs. they might as well have gift wrapped it.  celtics dominating the entire first half...somewhere in the 3rd quarter, they lost it. i can almost pin point it to when Rondo got a foul and was put on the bench.  When Rondo is on the floor, making plays, driving to the basket, Celts are unstoppable. They need to learn to keep it together when he\'s not on the floor.  Plain and simple.  And didn\'t  help that Ray Allen and Paul Pierce had off shooting games.

Freaking Lebron James.  Grrrr.

Going to game four in boston tonight.  bringing my broom.  :)

Can\'t wait to see Rondo right before my eyes.  He simply is on fire right now.   That dive for the ball the other night just showed how much more he wants this than anyone on the Magic.

I can\'t even begin to describe the agony of last night\'s game witnessing it at the garden. I am sure watching it on tv was just as painful for fans.  We were there to watch a sweep. The electricity was in the air before the game even started.  We basically screamed, cheered, stood on our feet, and clapped our hands until the last final seconds of that horrific OT ended.

The fact the celtics could have almost won that game still astounds me because they played so piss poor. Personally, magic should have been up by more. Just proves,  Celtics are a better team even when they aren\'t trying.  And they weren\'t last night.  They had the last possession of the game with like 12 sec left.   They honestly should have won.  But like the whole game, they couldn\'t get it together. Rondo was off all night. His passing, his plays, his driving to the basket, everything was just out of order.  It was like an impostor was playing.  Pierce was trying to be the hero, and for part of the game he was, but in OT, he seriously needed to step back. Ray Allen was on fire, and Ray Allen should have been the go to guy. Not Paul Pierce throwing up two hopeless prayers, two jumpshots where he couldn\'t even get any height or his legs up.

But...so far in the playoffs for the Celtics, with an embarrassing loss, they usually come back with an astounding win.  So tomorrow night, hopefully will be that.

And a side note to you Lakers fans:   Who wears a Kobe shirt to a celtic vs magic game?? REALLY.  REALLY.    And then when you get heckled by an entire section, you get upset.  Seriously.

WTF?!  That link is hilarious!

Anyhow, it is now official that the Celtics did indeed destroy the Cavaliers entire Franchise in the playoffs.  But hey, it\'s just payback for the Browns beating the Patriots in the wild card round of the 1994 playoffs!

lebron is a moron and realizes he will never be able to be the main man, im glad celts helped him realize that though. Those millionaires made a girl scout pact in China that they would play together and dominate, fucking idiots...he doesnt have all that "pressure" now b/c he has guys that can do it for him.  i cant believe how much a reality tv event this all was (thank god i dont have cable) he\'s no better than any of the idiots on any of those other reality tv shows (i dont know the names to any of them).  He\'s a joker and his legacy is now tarnished and forever, dare i say it, tainted

lebron sucks. i used to like him but this was a bad decision. very selfish. even if he wins titles he can\'t say he is the greatest player ever because he will be getting so much help from dwade and bosh. if he were true to the game and his friggin\' home state for crying out loud, he would\'ve stayed and cleveland and won it there. it could\'ve been done, but he\'s taking the easy way out.

paul pierce has been a celtic his whole career, it took him a long fucking time, but he got his championship. lebron has no patience and i have the feeling the heat are only going to be disappointed when the celtics demolish them. fuck you lebron. you are not the best player in basketball, past, present, or future.

while it would have been cool to see him stay in cle, i understand wanting to move on. he spent seven years in cleveland and they didn\'t give him shit to work with. a trade for jamison? washed up shaq? mo williams? these are the best players they could surround him with? clearly the organization doesn\'t know how to complement him. he moved on. he was impatient sure, but how long should he wait? as long as karl malone? as long as charles barkley? patrick ewing was pretty loyal to the knicks...

Unless you\'re a Cav fan, why do you give a shit?  Who says he has to stay true to his home town?  Pierce is from CA, so that analogy is out the window...  Do I think he\'s the best player, no, but he was a free agent and had the choice to go where he wanted...  You could make the argument that Boston had the cards stacked in 08 with Allen, Garnett, Pierce and Rondo, but who cares, they won...  Just because you\'re signed by a team doesn\'t necessarily mean you have to spend your whole career there...

Interesting analysis from the WSJ:

LeBron\'s Tax Holiday

We come not to praise or bury LeBron James, but only to note that by moving to Miami he\'s going to save a bundle on taxes. We\'ll take the King of ESPN\'s word that he\'s jumping to the Miami Heat from the Cleveland Cavaliers mainly for basketball reasons, but it is also true that Florida has no income tax. The rate in Akron, Ohio is a little over 7%.

Mr. James figures to earn close to $100 million in salary over five seasons in Miami. According to an analysis by Richard Vedder, an economist at Ohio University, Mr. James\'s net present value tax savings on his salary are between $6 million and $8 million by living in Miami versus his home town of Akron. Professional athletes do have to pay other state taxes for the dates they play in visiting team arenas, but most of Mr. James\'s considerable endorsement income would be taxed at Florida rates.

The tax comparisons looked even worse for two other teams in the LeBron bidding, the New York Knicks and New Jersey Nets. The New York Post estimated that New York City and state taxes of 12.85% on high income earners would have taken more than $12 million from Mr. James. New Jersey\'s rate is nearly 9%. Both of those teams are lousy, but it can\'t help their free-agent sales pitch to start out $9 billion to $12 billion in the after-tax hole.

While LeBron\'s departure got extraordinary media attention, it is hardly unique. In the early 1990s, Ohio was the home of 43 Fortune 500 companies. Twenty years later the number is 24. Census Bureau data show that from 2004-2008 Ohio saw a net outmigration of $6 billion of income and some 97,000 taxpayers. Even Ohio\'s famously liberal Senator, the late Howard Metzenbaum, moved to Florida late in his life to reduce his estate taxes.

We feel for Cleveland fans, but maybe they should allocate some of their wrath to the state politicians who keep driving high-income individuals and their businesses to financially sunnier climes.

i\'ll take him.  he\'s not gonna get much playing time playing behind Jermaine O\'Neil til Perkins is fully recuperated.  We have the same squad as last year minus Rasheed but adding the 2 O\'Neals.  All age arguments aside, they\'re gonna be a major force and I doubt any other team will look forward to seeing the Celtics on their schedule.

Oh, so you mean he\'s just like perkins??  ;)  He fits rigggggggggght in.

I thought about it. Not fully yet.  I think he\'s a good back up to have.  During the series vs your lakers, it was clear we needed more big men.  I have never really liked Shaq, even when i was younger, I still see no cons.  He\'s better than what we have right now. I just really hope the media doesn\'t coin him with an annoying name like "St. Shaqtrick" or "Shaqrock"  or anything similar.  I may vomit.

exactly.  he\'s gonna be nothing more than a 20 minute a game player to rest up our starters.  he\'ll get rebounds and dish it to rondo who can take care of the rest.  plus he can probably help out big baby with his inside game in practice.  smug ass leith still acts like the super lakers weren\'t 12 minutes away from losing the championship.  oh yeah, they picked up matt barnes so they have nothing to worry about now.  the only thing the lakers have going for them is that the other 4 best teams in the league are in the east.

That is yet to be determined and when the East consists of shitty teams and the West is obviously better seeing as every single team in the playoffs last year had 50+ wins while only 4 of the 8 teams in the East had 50+ wins. Nothing is going to change this year other than Miami now being one that will get 50+ so 5 teams will have that in the East.
The Lakers are just fine and with the healthy team they will have it shall be no problem to complete the 3peat.
I\'m just glad Shaq made his Lakers Jersey retirement no longer a subject of discussion. His number will not be retired and will not go up at least not while the Buss family owns the team.
