Title: True Blood
Post by: ChrisPitch on October 03, 2008, 11:32:18 am
True Blood is an American television drama series created by Alan Ball, based on the Sookie Stackhouse book series by Charlaine Harris. The show is broadcast on HBO and premiered on September 7. The show has been renewed for a second season.

True Blood details the co-existence of vampires and humans in Bon Temps, a fictional small Louisiana town. The series centers on Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a telepathic waitress at a diner, who falls in love with vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer).

Well, as someone who idolizes Alan Ball\'s creative pursuits, yet absolutely loathes the vampire genre, I wasn\'t sure how to approach this series. So we\'re four episodes in and I think it\'s safe to say that although I\'m not absolutely sold on the show, I am definitely intrigued by the initial character development and find myself highly interested to find out what will happen next.

I like how within the context of the show that vampires are a minority group just like many others in the United States and are in the public eye for the first time as many, including the primary male character, Bill Compton, have decided to "come out of the coffin" and are now "mainstreaming" it by living out in the open with humans. Of course, there are many other vampires who are clinging to their roots and are not taking their approach. The conflict between Bill and many of these vampires is something else that I particularly like.

Definitely worth a viewing.

i\'ve been hooked since day one....and now that i am stuck in the land of sickness and no breakfast, it seems that true blood and one tree hill are the ONLY things i get excited about:)  True Blood = Genius in my book ....  I also think the cast chosen for this production is outstanding.  Well done Alan

I like it well enough so far.  But as its in the same slot as Dexter it\'s second on my list, thank god for DVR. :)

Anna Paquin is looking particularly hot, in her southern white trashy garb.

I, like Chris, am not totally sold on the whole thing yet, but I\'m gonna keep watching till something makes me do otherwise.    It seems like an odd complaint, but I feel like they use the word "vampire" too much.  I\'m watching and buying the whole thing, then they say "vampire" practically every other word and it removes me from the situation.  It reminds me how ridiculous the whole concept is.  I also agree with Tyzak that the plot development is a little slow, but it seems to be picking up some what int he last couple episodes.

Alan Ball has some serious obsession with death.

I saw one episode, thought it was kinda weird, but maybe it\'s because I didn\'t watch the first few. What is that True blood shit they drink? Does it repel them from vampires or something?

It\'s synthetic blood that gives vampires what they need w/o having to kill humans.

That just makes you "high" or something.

More specifically, it makes your senses somewhat vampric for a time.

Though it is not mentioned alot, Sookie, I think, has some of this ability after drinking Bill\'s blood for healing.

I just watched the first two episodes. I really like the underlying themes of racism and homophobia in America symbolized by the vampires. It\'s interesting and I feel myself getting hooked just because I have to know what happens next. I too cannot stand the whole vampire-genre in general, and I\'m not sold either that this is a great show yet. But I\'ll keep watching. Tara and Lafayette are great characters. I love the constant sexual intensity and suspense too. Some of the dialogue is really cheesy. Whatever, we\'ll see. So far it has kept me interested, that is all.

Please tell me that there is more of a twist and that they didn\'t give away the killer at the end of the last episode... I love this show, but that would be pretty anti-climatic if that was the case.

Nah - she was starting to get annoying, but then again, Jason has been annoying since day one.

A couple points:

1. If it is Rene, there he may have some other purpose other than being a serial killer.  All of the women he\'s supposedly offed have been women that have had relations or have been bitten by choice.

2. I\'m starting to get a little tired of Lafayette, I hope that he gets it for the death of the vamp that Amy killed.

3. Did anyone think that the lady that bailed Tara out looked a lot like the lady with the pig that caused her to go off the road?

1. It is Rene. Not only has every murdered woman been associated with vampires, but they were all "close" to Jason Stackhouse in some way. Jason is very close to Rene, Rene knows who he\'s banging at all times, which ones are \'fang-bangers\', and basically where they\'ll be and when. His open support of vamps, ie him acting cool with Bill on numerous occasions, and Jason\'s dumb-ass being connected to every victim is his collective alibi for not being the murderer.

2. If Lafayette is offed, I may stop watching the show. He is by far the best character on the show. If anything, I hope he becomes a vampire to induce a twist on his bad-ass character. How is he more annoying compared to other characters on this show? Just wondering your reasons. I\'m a huge Lafayette fan. His scenes are fucking great.

3. That was certainly her.

I\'m just not a fan of the character.  His personality changes like the wind.  In a matter of seconds he\'ll go from being a short order cook, to a drug dealer, to a male prostitute, to a gangbanger to a clean cut guy who looks like he should be working for the government.  He\'s got too much going on for me to get into his character.  Let\'s stick to one personality so that people can get to know what he about rather than changing it from scene to scene.

Not the same person.  Mariana Kloveno plays "Lorena", the character that made Bill.  Michelle Forbes plays Maryann, the woman that takes Tara in.

His employment changes from being taxed or untaxed, his personality however does not. His values and personality are CONSTANT in every \'physical\' form. The only reason he appeared clean cut and in "government-like" attire was to have a shot at pwning the hypocritical politician who partakes in all of the leisure activities he speaks out against, all facilitated by Lafayette\'s personal business endeavors. He is a true entrepeneur, that\'s why, in your point of view, he "changes like the wind." I\'ll still argue that he does not. You know which side of every debate Lafayette stands. He\'s the man.

One of my favorite scenes of the season involves Eric at Fangtasia when a woman asks if she can take his picture. He says yes, she does, and then Longshadow destroys the phone with which she took it. The woman looks befuddled and says, "I thought you said I could take your picture." Eric then replies, with his typical deadpan sarcastic superiority, "I said you take it; I did not say that you could keep it." Priceless.

- Jason moved up the chain
- The attack at the airport
- Lafayette/Eric (something will come of this)
- Tara\'s party
- Sam/Daphne revelations
- Sookie and the bellboy

It made not have been action packed, but a lot did happen...

I loved the old school scene w/ Eric and Guidrich, that was classy.  I hope they find him so he can fuck up some humans.

Me thinks that he is the vamp that the church has captured.

Also, me thinks there will be some serious violence coming up.

First season; slow, boring, mostly about hicks
second season; bloody...

Vikings, dude.

Probably unification wars circa 980?

Or could just be generic viking radings...

Maryann needs to go, I\'m so bored with her, I don\'t care what she is, I don\'t care what she wants and why she obviously wants to kill Sam, just go away.  They\'re wasting too much time on her that could be used on Eric. :)

This show is so fucking good.

The Eric/Godrich flashback had to be around 1000--he says he is 1000 years old all the time.

People hate on the Mary Ann story, but it makes the show that much more entertaining. Every story line is thick & spicy.

Also dug the Bill Compton roaring 20\'s scene.  still hoping Eric and Godric reunite in a fury of human killing.  BTW we had a blood orgy and full on fuckfest this episode.  I can\'t stroke to that shit though.

The Compton 20\'s scene was the shit. Alan Ball pwn3s flashbacks. Hahahaa to the lack of bloody strokes.

in the preview for next show, daphne says that MaryAnn is immortal... could lead to something very important confronting the super-powerful, though mortal/dead, vamps. MaryAnn also seems interested in Sookie.

So I was thinking about, the other day, how Arlene told Terry she had a surprise for him and they ended up at Maryann\'s shady ass sex party?
What\'s that about?
I guess maybe she had a different surprise in mind but still.

Yeah, like why is Daphne on her side if Maryann is the one who scratched up her back? Maybe Maryann has a way of doing this without people knowing, like putting them in their funky huge pupil state.

Or maybe her being a shape-shifter saved her life without needing vamp blood to cure her. If Sookie survived the attack without drinking blood, she would\'ve still had scars on her back.

I think the "funky huge pupil state" is important. Nobody talks about shit the next day, and Eggs proved she erases minds when he found the spot 2 miles off the road. Weird though, her servant and Daphne were unaffected. I wonder why she chooses some people and not others, and I want to know what the fuck is up with Eggs being her roadie.

I love Jason this season.  I just want him to get laid more like last season.

Maryann bores me, Bill\'s maker is a psycho whack job who hopefully returns sooner than later, at least her meddling is enjoyable, where maryann just sucks.

The show is definitely up & down. There was a stretch of some great episodes this season, but I got a bit worn out by the end. The last episode was better than I was expecting it to be though.

Lafayette is by far the best actor on the show. Jason is fucking hilarious, and I\'ve become a Detective Belfleur fan for sure. Sookie and Tara both get on my nerves now. Even Bill a lot of the time. Use contractions brah!

I still like the show though. It\'s pretty goddamn entertaining.

Hey dannytriscuits, I have Shotime on demand now, and have watched the first 6 episodes of Dexter. Now THAT is a fucking show. Good call brew. Never had the opportunity until now and I\'m lucky to have all three seasons at my tips. Not to mention ****s which is a bad ass show too.

Breaking Bad is on AMC, same channel as Mad Men, which although I don\'t watch I have heard nothing but amazing things about.  Plenty of time to catch up on seasons 1 & 2.  They run 12 or 13 episode seasons in early summer. So it won\'t be back till April or May, but it\'s def worth watching.
