You\'re only an ass if the player who\'s sweater you are wearing is still playing for another team in the leauge.

I think that a rangers jagr shirt would be fine, though if you were to get a russian one that would be pretty hardcore.

Maybe ass is the wrong word; I feel bad for people I see at bruins games wearing throton or samsonov shirts.

Maybe you\'d be more of a "haha, look at that dude, he needs to buy a new shirt"

Haha, I go to 2 or 3 B\'s games a year just on principle, but they have a long way to go for me to buy merchandise!

Let\'s be realistic here.  Sweaters are not cheap, especially the personalized ones.  So, I see no problem in wearing an older sweater.  That being said, my wife, will not be caught dead in her old Gomez sweater, but chastises me for wearing my Rockie or Scout sweater.  Go figure.

This coming from Mr. Boston fan?

I get "looks" wearing my sweaters (Bourque, Bergeron, Thomas) around. However, I dare you to find a crowd of 100 people in the greater boston area none of whom are wearing any type of merchandise from the red sox or the patriots.

Agreed, thats why I changed my remark to "haha, look at that dude."

Where do you get your scout sweater? Are there more where it came from?

I hope you could tell that I was joking.  Seriously, I actually gotta give props to anyone wearing B\'s gear...you know they\'re a good fan of the Bruins if they have any gear.  Red Sox and Patriots and now Celtics gear is sooooo trendy.  That\'s what happens when a team is really good.  Bruins gear is just like Breakfast gear: you don\'t have to have any to be a fan, but if you do have any and proudly wear it, then you are definitely a fan.

Nice, love the classic sweaters.  They seem to be more prevalent in hockey than any other sport, just another cool quirk of hockey fans.  I would have bought a Bourque sweater back in the day if I had any money, but his tenure with the team was when I was age -1 through 20!

I hate those Red Sox hats, they have been trendy for years and years and years.  Every douche in Boston has one.  You definitely see plenty of miscellaneous people out here with Red Sox hats, even those who likely do not have any Boston connection (illegal immigrant landscaping in a Red Sox hat, for example).

The Bourque Jersey was a gift from the best gal ever! (I wore 77 in HS Football tho, I can\'t skate at all)

I would like an old school Orr sweater, and then maybe a Paul Coffey as well but I would have to figure out witch team. :)

Yuppers.  It was on Wooster Street the night before...and then traveled to the QU Ice Rink and then to the Hamden High Rink.  With a stop inbetween at the Glenwood so the guy could get a hot dog.... no lie...

My guess is that someone who was on the Red Wings went to QU.

Which means that these posts should really be in the 07-08 thread.

Unless they are doing a travelling show to all towns with Division-1 hockey programs.

...I saw it in \'04 when it did a tour of all AHL towns.

2 buddies of mine from High School worked at the Hartford Civic center many moons ago. They were really friendly with the security guards who worked there. any way they had the NHL draft there 1 year and they locked the cup up in the security office over night. They have pictures of them drinking beers out of it etc. I was ALWAYS jealous as hell of that.

I have never touched the cup. They have pictures drinking beer out of it, holding up like they won it etc.

TSN shows moves made by US teams.

How far out of the loop are you ? What I mean is have you kept up with the free agency moves ?

Like Redden coming to NYR and that stuff as far back as the free agency moves or more recent stuff ?

PROVIDENCE — Rob Murray, an assistant coach with the Providence Bruins for the last five years, has been named P-Bruins’ new head coach. He replaces Scott Gordon, who last week was named head coach of the New York Islanders.

...No comment from the NY people?

I am a bit disapointed he is leaving Providence, I think he was a good enough coach. (Losing in the playoffs both years)

However...both seasons the P-Bruins were prone to sloppy (not bad) passes and alot of "bad" penatlies...things that are normally blamed on the coach.

It is unfortunate that CT is unable to sustain a professional sports team.

It is tough In CT because many if not all folks have very strong allegiances to either the Boston / New England Teams or unfortunately the Teams from NY.

It is kind of a transition state in that regard. Even when the Whale was playing in Hartford many folks were Bruins fans. It didn\'t help that the Whale wasn\'t very successful either.

Games at the Hartford Civic Center were always a good time tho. easy in and out of that place, not to big. Good place to see a concert. Atleast it used to be, haven\'t been there in years

I believe that is one of the reasons why all professional sports teams in CT fail.

I also think because we are stuck in between two major cities and really lack a large city, the population isn\'t there.

CT is also not that fanatical. We enjoy sports, have favorite teams, like sporting events but we lack a solid base of sports fanatics.

as a teenager, we amtrak\'d it up there to see the penguins play the whalers.  i thought it was a great place, mainly cause tickets were like 1/10th the price of rangers tickets and no one went there so you could just walk up front.

for those away from TVs during the season you can usually find your teams games online at justin.tv

Rangers = http://justin.tv/pkcable

Also the NHL network will be carrying Hockey Night In Canada all season. So they will be showing 1 or 2 games every Saturday night throughout the year.

nhl net is also showing the penguins games from the weekend on tuesday and thursday.  unfortunately  i already know who won by then

Went to my first hockey game of the season (minor league but whatever) and remembered how much I love it.

Fucking pyched for tonight, though the match-ups will suck and I am somewhat dreading the "live, on ice preformance" by Def Leopord"

Red Wings over Leafs (5-1)
{In a battle of best vs. worst}

Bruins over Avalance (3-2)
{In a battle of medocre}

Def Leopard sucked.

The coeverage for the Wings/Leafs game was so pro-Detriot it wasn\'t even funny.

GO LEAFS GO!

I don\'t like it when the Bruins give up any more than 2 or 3 goals. That is not a winning formula.

Great win for the Bruins last night tho. I managed to stay awake to see the game winner. I was down on them early as I thought they looked slow and were making a lot of mental errors. But they buried the puck in the net and that made me feel better.

The young guys looked pretty good as well. I was sporting my Bourque jersey last night for the game :)

Looking forward to tonights Ranger v. Chicago game.

rumor has it Gaborik wants out of Minnesota. Several teams interested etc.

Hey Yoda how did that loss taste :) ?

5-0 Baby!!!

But in all seriousness the Devils looked really good when they got the floor check going. Unfortunately Marty had a mental lapse and let that crap goal in. The Devils v. Rangers is going to be especially good hockey this season i think.

I have been very impressed with the Rangers play so far this season. Other than the philly game where they looked dead tired they actually look like a potential post season threat. Long season but 10 points is awfully nice to have.

I hate Ott more than Avery.

Both are pussies for running away from Lucic.

Also, for Boston area folks, the Bruins are having a "one free beer" (Sam Adams) night with purchase of "bad" seats for Thursday game against the Leafs.

The Rangers have also played more games than anyone in the division.  If you take those four games away, this is what the standings might look like:

Rangers - 17 Points
Devils - 14 Points
Penguins - 14 Points
Flyers - 11 Points
Islanders - 5 Points

The tops three teams in the division, looks a lot more balanced than the current 21 points that they have, but that will balance out as the season progresses.

The Rangers self destructed in the 3rd period against Toronto of all teams.

Valli looked great through 40+ minutes. He let in a few easy ones but the team stopped playing Defense.

UGH. Tough loss to watch.

5 goals in like 4 minutes is rough.

They played the video of the injury before the Rangers Game last night on Gamenight. You can see where he hurts himself but it wasn\'t a collision or anything. Really sucks for Marty as he was closing in on Roy. Weekes is pretty good so the Devils are still in the hunt. I think they will make the playoffs, they just won\'t be seated as high.

Man the Rangers just cannot score goals. It is really sad that all the issues from last season have not been addressed. Crappy power play and no real scorer except Zhredev. I cannot believe they gave up 2 short handed goals last night to the sucky injured Isles. There bubble has burst and they are definitely coming down to the reality fo the team being only so so

I really think that this is a gift to Dallas. They have suuuuucked since Avery went there and all sorts of drama. Not all of it Avery but i think they will use his departure as catalyst to get back to winning.

I can understand the league getting pissed as what he said. Should have been said on the ice and not by calling over a bunch of media people and cameras.

But what makes the League mickey mouse once again is they have guys like Simon who chops a guy in the throat he gets 20 games, Pronger steps on a guys ankle repeatedly with razor sharp skates (as did simon) and they get games. Hollweg etc etc.

Avery runs his mouth and is suspended indefinitely ??? I mean whats worse cheap shots that could kill/maim a player forever or a guy running his mouth ?

It reminds me of the FCC. Blood, guts extreme violence ?? A OK, A tittie gets shown for a millisecond during the superbowl and all hell breaks loose.

I\'m guess that the winter classic is promoting heavier in the cities that are hosting and that are participating.  I watched part of it this year, but I\'ll be honest, I had no interest in either team playing.  It\'ll be more interesting when it\'s closer to home and the Devils actually have a shot at playing one of these games.

It was heavily advertised on Versus, and on NESN (the local channel which carries hockey).

Also, it recieved press in the local paper because Worcester was hosting the AHL All-star game.

After the lock-out, tennis, areana football and soccer had, at one point or the other, better rattings than the NHL.

Point in case:
In 2007 games 1-3 of the Stanely Cup Finals were NOT broadcast nationally. Game 4, on a Saturday night, recieved the lowest rating of a potentially "clinching" title game ever.

It\'s main compitition was the network television debut of Highschool Musical.

Didn\'t watch any of the all star weekend. I knew it was on but then again I follow hockey pretty closely well sort of. Any way I find the "All Star" weekend boring. The best possible outcome is that no one on your team gets hurt. There is nothing riding on the game at all. The fan voting is sooo stupid. and the league rules about representation from every team. It is really poorly designed.

The winter classic on the other hand IMHO is quickly becoming a great showcase.. NYE day right before most of the bowl games start, out doors etc etc. It really has a nice winter / holiday charm to it and caps off a week of holiday fun. Plus the game counts so the teams have incentive as well as being center stage WAY more so then the All Star games.

Atleast Ovie made things kind of crazy from some of the clips i have seen. the league should promote him more and give Crosby a breather

And there lies the problem.  All importan games for the sport are on this rinky dink VS. station.  Luckily, I have it, but not everyone does.  The championship game or series for any professional sport should be on one of the four national networks; if not there, it should at least be on ESPN.  Until that happens, it\'ll never be taken seriously.  The lockout should really be in the past; if fans want to continue to see this sport in North America twenty years down the road, we have to get behind it now or else we\'ll be relegated to watching it at local colleges and every 4 years in the winter olympics.

The Stanely Cups Finals are on NBC.

Last year, Pittsburg vs. Detriot, they showed all 7 games.

The previous year, Ottawa vs. Annahiem, they only showed the possible cliching games.

Same with Carolia vs. Edmonton in \'06

Exactly my point.  They showed the games on network tv because it was 2 big markets.  Those games should be on regardless of who is playing.  Would they not have the SB on the networks if it had ended up being Carolina vs. Tennessee.  The same principals should apply.

i watched the allstar weekend saturday night and the game yesterday.
the skills competetion was hilarious.
kovalev did a hackeysack stylee back of the neck stall and stamkos did a frogsplash then pushed the puck from his right glove to the stick in his laft hand scoring a goal.
the highlight was alex the great(with help from malkin,of all folks)wearing a straw hat with canada flag and elvis glasses and 2 sticks to win the contest.
the hardest shot was zdeno chara, breaking an alltime record..
last nights game was pretty good but the hightlight, for me,was malkin with one of the sickest goals ive seen in awhile..
peep it.
on a sidenote, hank the tank gt ROLLED UP AND SMOKED.
strangers and b\'s this saturday at 1.

This is just monumentally stupid on the Rangers part. Before the season started Sather and Avery were only about 500grand apart. Sather obviously didn\'t think Avery was going to be a huge loss for the Rangers so they didn\'t sign him. So now they are going to bend over backwards to give him a shot when former teammates have already made it clear that Avery wasn\'t a very well liked guy in the lockerroom. Not to mention that the Rangers are basically imploding at the moment, Avery and his 20 goals a season does nothing to address their scoring problems and his 5\'10" 190 pounds does nothing to address the size problems. Add to that the Rangers have 0 cap space to make any real changes this season or in the off season. Another bad move by Sather and the Rangers.

I think this is a "gift" to keep the heat off Renney and Sather. A do nothing signing that takes the heat off management

- 6 points behind the eastern and western conference leaders
- Power ranking of #1 by ESPN for the past two weeks
- Brodeur is 2 games away from breaking Roy\'s all time win record
- Broduer is 4 shutouts away from breaking Sawchuk\'s all time shutout record

Typical ranger fan comment... Do you forget a couple years ago when we swept you out of the playoffs?  For the most part you\'ve had our number in the playoffs, but the rangers were a different team during those series.  You can call Brodeur fatso or dredge up his personal issues (which has nothing to do with his playing ability), but he still is statistically the best goaltender to play the game; and he\'ll have the shutout record by year end or early next year...  We\'ve had 3 Stanley Cups since your last in 94 and by my calculations, you\'re due for another in 2048.  Have fun watching us win until then...

A huge accomplishment for Marty.

As much as I love to root against him he deserves all the praise etc.

Hell he even had a lockout year so this should have already happened (barring injury of course)

The Devils look really good headed in to the playoffs.

Still think Roy was better but it is hard to compare eras and stats etc.

Saturday we have a chance at knocking the Sabres out of the playoffs for good and without Miller in goal we better get those two points. Rangers are averaging 40 shots on goal a night and except for the shut-out in Carolina they\'ve played decent hockey. Zherdev getting benched has sent a clear message to this team...play hard or sit. All I can say is that you better keep winning because you\'re only 4 points ahead of the 9 spot. You have even a small skid and you\'re not even in the playoffs.  As for regular season not meaning anything, you\'re a little right, but if you don\'t perform in the regular season, there is no post-season (which the rangers are accustomed to with the exception of the past to years).  As for only having 3 SC, I think that\'s pretty good seeing as we\'ve only been in the league for 27 years; that\'s one championship every 9 years and the fact that we\'ve won the three in 14 years really equates to a championship every 4-1/2 years.  Yes, the Rangers have 3 SC championships, but you been in the league for over a half century longer than us, I\'d hope you\'d have more than us by now.  Statistically, you win a championship once every 20+ years, and since you won your first in \'27, that number pretty much holds except for the 54 year drought from 1940-1994.

You\'re comments were those of a typical Ranger fan.  The only one you didn\'t make was that at least you have a parade and not a parking lot party...  See you come playoff time, if you\'re there...

a little food for thought...Ottawa hasn\'t won a Stanely Cup since 1926-27 yet they have 10 overall. The Montreal Canadiens are to hockey as the NY Yankees are to baseball....the most storied franchise in history. 24 or 25 Cups since 1915-16. Then Toronto (11), Detroit-Ottawa (10), Boston (5), Chicago (3), New York (3)...winningest expansion team are the Edmonton Oilers (5). The game that we watch today is faster yes, but not truely as physical as it used to be...for good reasons, there were too many goons running a muck and not sticking to the code. Fighting was used to self-police the game, get too close to an opposing goalie and forget it...you were getting hit HARD. Today it\'s rarely for those reasons...like defending a smaller more vulnerable player. The Islanders of the late 70\'s early 80\'s (and the 70\'s Flyers) were skilled yes, but they had a goon factor that just isn\'t seen anymore.

If I were a Devils fan (yuck) I would PRAY we don\'t meet the Capitols because OV and company have a shitload of young and old talent on their team and they can put the puck in the net and play solid D...their goalie is questionable though. And you\'re right, even the smallest skid at this point could take a (East or West) team from 4th or 5th to 9th in the standings really fast...but I believe in my team win or lose and I think we\'ll sneek in again this year. Everyone in the East can beat each other on any given day and that\'s what parody is all about.

and don\'t worry...we\'ll be there:)

Thanks for the history lesson... Don\'t assume that because my team isn\'t one of the original six, that I don\'t know about the history of the sport.  Also, my father is a 30+ year season ticket holder for the rangers in the old blue section and he doesn\'t have to say yuk when he mentions the devils. I actually don\'t hate the rangers (except for avery); I do, however have an issue with ranger fans that constantly boo their team game in and game out.  If you\'re really that disappointed with your team, stop watching.

Rangers fans HAD to boo the team in order to get any kind of action from management. And so far it has worked.

If the Devils were playing as soft as the Rangers had been all season I would hope that your fan (hehehe) would boo them as well. Only difference is Lou Lam knows hockey players like no other and hasn\'t really had to deal with under achievers.

The Devils are the team to beat coming out of the East right now. The Bruins have not been playing very well and this is the worst possible time for them to be slumping. They are still a ridiculous team but the Devils right now are looking scary.

As much as torts has done I still don\'t like the way this team is playing hockey. It is definitely more fun to watch then Renney\'s system but I still see problems. We will probably make the playoffs but won\'t get past the first round if we finish 6,7,or 8. This team just doesn\'t have what it takes to play with the other playoff teams. 7 game series and they are in trouble.

Hank has been medicore at best IMHO. that F-ing soft short side goal he gave up in Montreal was just sad, and with the F-ing game on the line. 30wins in first 4 seasons doesn\'t mean jack really. All it means is the rangers had shit goal tending and started a good rookie. And hank benefited from that. Yes he is a very good goal tender but as much as I hate to say it he cannot steal games. It sucks that for whatever reason he cannot single handily shut down other teams. He never does it. He may ride a shutout until the 3rd or whatever but he almost always gives one up. He never DOMINATES a game. And to me that is what makes a GREAT goal tender.

I watched the Devils last night before I went to see Timmy and they didn\'t bring much untill the 3rd period...sure there was the whole Brodeur side show the night before but seriously, they never look very scary.

Avery OWNS Marty and I can\'t wait to see them at it again come the 30th. I\'m glad that people are stupid enough to hate him....THAT\'S WHAT HE WANTS. He takes your best players out of the game which allows his team mates to get into open areas on the ice and get quality scoring chances. And he brings 110% every night...with his mouth and his stick.

As far as Lundy goes...he hasn\'t even played his best hockey this year and whether he brings it to another level is yet to be seen, but if we can score 3 or 4 goals a night for the rest of the year then I think we have a shot at 4th place...but Pittsburg is hot right now as well so who knows. I still think Boston is the team to beat. All it will take are a few key injuries to any of the contenders and things can change in a heartbeat. God I love this time of the year.

The boys just need to take it one game at a time...if the playoffs ended today we\'d be playing the Caps I think and i\'m not sure if that\'s the best match-up for us. I\'d like to get some revenge on Pitt for last year but they are playing their best hockey right now so......it\'s gonna be tough no matter who we play.

Avery has definately been the spark plug that this team needed and under Torts they HAVE gotten their confidence back. Nassy hasn\'t played this type of up tempo hockey in a long time so it\'s taken him a bit longer to get going but he\'s coming around. Nic Antropov has also given us SIZE (6\'6\' 220lbs) up front which we lost when Jagr left, he has soft hands for a big guy and although he doesn\'t have blazing speed he seems to put himself in the right place at the right time. Limiting mistakes is what this team needs to concentrate on.

I\'m not saying the Strangers are a Cup contender this year but I can see them making the 2nd round again. They\'re only 10 games into a new system and it takes alot more time then that to get comfortable so i\'m happy with the turn around for sure...players want to play, not over think the game and that was where I think Renny went wrong.

And again... what the hell does his alimony payments have to do with his ability to play hockey?  Again, you\'re spouting typical Ranger bullshit; you can ask anyone that knows up in CT that\'s a hockey fan, even Freddie if he remembers the conversation from 7-8 years ago, I\'ve always said that the best series of hockey that I have ever seen was the \'94 conference championship series in which the rangers beat the devils... Chew on that before you start stereotyping Devils fans...

fair enough, but we did have the conversation at some dumpy bar somewhere in CT during the Devils/Avalanche Stanley Cup Finals...

Yoda...relax, i\'m BREAKING YOUR BALLS. I never said Marty wasn\'t a GREAT goal tender, but he will always be a whiney little bitch just like Avery will always be an asshole to you, right? But like I said, I don\'t like the team...just like I don\'t like the Red Sox.

I have respect for anyone (even Marty) who brings there A game night in and night out but apparently you don\'t cause Avery played so hard in last years playoff that he almost lost his fucking spleen....so save your breath with the "typical ranger fan" bullshit.

And I posted the link about Marty cause I thought it was fucked up that right after his big accomplishment that was what his douche\' of an ex would do to him....I honestly don\'t care about his story, it has nothing to do with his ability as a player. Just as Averys comments have nothing to do with what he does on the ice...except that it\'s to intentionally get into other players heads, it\'s an act...just like Brodeur flop last year when Avery pushed him. I think it only helps the rivalry but that\'s just my opinion.

Sorry, but even Avery\'s own teammates had an issue with his antics last year.  Maybe that\'s why Brodeur didn\'t want to shake his hand after the last game last year.

I sooooo haven\'t been into this season. I\'m a slacker.   But it looks like everyone else has been to.   Rangers did win tonight.  Nice shut out by Lundqvist....

Perhaps the playoffs will get us all excited....

A long time ago I realized that this is a Ragners/Devils bashing thread.

Avery signing and Broduers records got notice but most other things have gone unmentioned.

Congrats on the win... you\'ve put yourself more than 2 games ahead of 9th place and 1 behind 6th place... I can\'t say that I\'ve been happy with the way my team is playing, but we\'re only one win away from the #2 spot, so I really can\'t complaign...

Rangers better come to play in the remaining 3 games or they could be shut out of the playoffs.  Florida and Rangers are tied in points with 3 games each remaining.  In my opinion, the rangers have to win all three to guarantee themselves the 8 seed.  The Rangers are 1 and 2 against Montreal (1 game) and 2 and 2 against Phili (2 games).  Florida is 2 and 1 against Phili (1 game), 3 and 2 against Atlanta (1 game) and 2 and 2 against Washington (1 game).  Rangers need to either be up in points or wins because Florida owns the series 3 games to 1.

They are essentially dead to me at this point. I do not think they will make the playoffs and even if they do so what. they cannot beat any of the top 8 teams in the east in a 7 game series. NO WAY Not gonna happen. It isn\'t like the powerplay is all of a sudden going to wake up and start scoring on a consistent basis. They will be golfing soon enough.

My hope is that they miss the playoffs and Sather is fired. But the problems for the rangers runs DEEP. Gomez @ 7.5 Drury @ 7, Redden @ 6.5, Rosival at 5 and all for multi-year contracts some with no trade and or no movement clauses. Even if they sign NO FA\'s in the off season and only sign the RFA\'s they will once again be right against the cap. they are screwed for a long time to come.

See, I don\'t get it... You guys loves Gomez and Drury when you got them and they both produced.  Having seen Gomez on my team for so many years, I wouldn\'t mind him still being on the team (except for one tiny detail... he\'s a traitor).  You have to hope that they keep the 8 seed; once you\'re in the playoffs, you never know what will happen...

The issue is their salaries not really the players. They are decent enough but they are not the kind of players u build a team around. They are role players. Drury is a 20 goal scorer, Gomez is the same. The Rangers are a team of role players. There is no gifted goal scorer on this team, add to that they have terrible over priced D and we are screwed. They did nothing to replace the scoring that Jagr brought to the team. Except to add a few 20 goal scorers.

Avery is a bust IMHO. he gave the team a quick boost in the heart dept. but has fizzled completely. He went from being a surge > to barley noticeable > to taking bad penalties.
When Torts first took over they were a go go go team. Then the trade deadline came, they got rid of 2 hussle guys and the team now plays a slow boring Renney type game again with all the same trouble.

Perfect example. Corey Potter scores a goal and an assist in his 2 call up games. So what did the rangers do ? they sent him down WTF!!!! so precious terrible slows-ival can get his spot back. Redden, Rosival, Drury, Gomez, hank can all play without any repercussions for bad play and they know it and it shows on the ice.

I do know that if the Rangers make the playoffs they do not get out of the 1st round. Name 1 team in the East that you honestly think the Rangers match up well with in a game ? let alone a 7 game series.

I\'m not one for matching teams/players/lines and comparing them, but if you look at the head to head games against the other 7 current playoff teams in the east, you pretty much have a 50/50 shot with most of them.

Current East Playoff Seeds
1 - Boston (2/2)
2 - Washington (1/3) Not a good matchup
3 - NJ (3/3)
4 - Phili (2/2) With two more games against
5 - Carolina (2/2)
6 - Pitt (3/3)
7 - Montreal - (1/2) One more game against

I\'m not sticking up for the rangers, but as a devils fan, I sure as hell don\'t want to draw them in the first round...

The only reason I would be worried as a Devil fan is that the rangers usually show up to play against the Devils (emotionally) you give us that extra incentive but it works both ways. Those series as with any game against the islanders are pick\'ems. Way too many strange things have happened in games against those teams so I see why you would be concerned. but the Devils have legit goal scorers. if they can find their game again and get out of their little slump they will be good to go.

Fenway Park has been confirmed as 2010 Winter Classic setting

By: Joe Haggerty
0 Comments PrintA hockey source familair with the proceedings has confirmed to WEEI.com that the 2010 NHL Winter Classic will take place at Fenway Park on Jan. 1 with the Boston Bruins taking on an as-yet-undetermined opponent. The two most speculated opponents for the Fenway game have been the New York Rangers and the rival Montreal Canadiens, with the Habs the more likely of the two natural rivals. The Boston Herald first reported the story.

After the last two NHL Winter Classics have gone without a Canadian hockey team, it\'s expected there will be pressure exerted by the powers that be North of the Border to get the Canadiens involved in the Boston game. Bet on B\'s and Habs Jan. 1 at Fenway, and a banged out ballpark with mittens, hot cocoa and earmuffs as far as the eye can see. Should be a once-in-a-lifetime type event.

Why ?

If they were going to do it, they should have done it this year. The new building means nothing at all. No history no nothing. just a new stadium

At least fenway is one of the last great old ball parks.

And I guess I have to eat a little crow over my Ranger bashing. They looked pretty good against Montreal but of course no one knows which team will show up each night

Sorry, I just hate Fenway.  It\'s not a Yankee/Red Sox or I hate boston thing.  I actually like the city of boston, but that stadium basically has one road in/out and the bathrooms are disgusting...  Last time I was there, they still had troughs in the mens room... I might consider going back when they join the 20th century (forget the 21st century) and replace them with urinals...

I\'m very comfortable with my penis, Freddie, thank you... What I have a problem with is other people\'s urin splashing in my direction.  I didn\'t invite them to piss on me, so why should I unvoluntarily have to accept their splashback?  If you\'re okay with getting someone else\'s piss on you, then you\'re a better person than me...

Well if the Rangers keep getting these ridiculous calls maybe

I root for the Rangers and even I was calling BS on that first goal.

I cannot believe the refs let Naslund hack away at the goalies glove for that long without a whistle. He clearly had the puck under his glove. The refs injected themselves way too much in to the game and they are pretty much responsible for how it got out of hand a bit.

But I think we match up better with Boston than AO and the caps. That isn\'t saying a whole lot but if I had to choose I think I would pick Boston.

So Game one has been played.

WHAT A GOAL BY DUBI!!!!!!!!!

We were going nuts last night. They were really lucky surviving to get the win. Hopefully Drury can play in Game 2 because they really could have used him in the faceoff circle last night. Not to mention his penalty killing skills

Really looking forward to the bruins game tonight. I think that series is going to be awesome

I got this link sent to me and thought it was funny as hell

Also, I was surely disapointed by the performance of the Flyers. Three goals on odd-man rushes?

That\'s just not playing very hard.

I watched most of the st. louis vancouver game, and it easily could have been 5-1. I didn\'t know van had such good offense.

I have to say, I am always torn when the Rangers play the Caps.  So this series will have me going back and forth.   The Caps to me are a young team building to become something great.  But the Rangers, they\'ve been the team i\'ve cheered for with my Pops since i was a kid....

glad to see them pull off game 1.

Did you think that they were going to stay the same price as regular season?  The prices always go up the deeper in the post season you get.  If I were you and you could drop $66 for a ticket, I would grab seats in sections 303, 302, 301, 330, 329, 314, 315, 316, 317, 318.  That way you\'re at the game and you can see the whole ice for a reasonable price...

I\'m not sure what to tell you... I\'m not going to flame you for not wanting to spend a wad of cash to see a game when it\'s going to be televised, but I merely suggested some reasonable price tickets as shown on the site you linked above...  I can\'t honestly say that I have gone to a WS or NHL playoff/SC game that I didn\'t get the tickets free from someone...  With the Devils, I was lucky in the past; one of my wife\'s vendors used to get us John McClean\'s seats and we were lucky enough to be there for both numbers to be retired... I didn\'t want to pay $55 for bleacher seats to YS for Old Timers Game, but I sucked it up and I\'ll be there... But I\'m not one to talk about money because I\'m probably not going to see TB tomorrow because I don\'t have anyone to go with me and I don\'t feel like paying $36 for travel/cover charge...

???

Not flaming, just pointing out that I\'m looking at my 2007 ALCS Game 7 stub right now.  Section 17.  Face value: $125.  Regular season price for that seat that year: $50.  I also recall entering the World Series ticket lottery that year; bleachers started at $60, normal price on upper bleachers was $18 that year.  I have also just purchased two tickets for the Celtics round 2 game 7 from a season ticket holder friend.  Section 19, regular season $49.50, second round $85.

But I mean, this is the ALCS and World Series and NHL playoffs, I have no problem with any of this.  The events are more important, the prices should be higher.  Yeah, it\'s depressing when all but the lowest price tier are out of your price range, and the few tickets you can afford don\'t even go on sale to the public.  But hey, like I\'ve said in the Phish thread, these tickets are the playthings of the privileged.  The ownership of these teams should not leave millions of dollars on the table and sell these tickets for regular season prices out of the goodness of their heart.  That would be dumb.  If your owner is that dumb, your team would never be in the playoffs in the first place.  Furthermore, if your owner graciously turns down millions of dollars, then he never would have had enough money to buy the team in the first place.

As a Ranger Fan to another Ranger Fan, WHY ?

I knew as soon as it was 3-1 we weren\'t coming back. When was the last time / anytime this season that the Rangers have scored 4 or even 5 goals. Yes Game 1 but before that it was a while and never when trailing by that many goals

It is really simple. If the rangers don\'t score first  they are basically done. They play pretty well with a lead and lean on Hank to carry them to victory. When they get behind they have to take chances and the leave Hank out to dry.

I wouldn\'t be surprised if Hank was exhausted and just doesn\'t have it in the tank in games 5 and 6. He basically stole the 3 games they won. Now having said all of this he COULD win game 7 but he needs some help and the team seems to be imploding around him at the worst possible time.

WHY DID THEY SCRATCH ORR $%^!$@%^!!!! If there was 1 game we needed him that was DEF it.

So the rangers and devils are out and the thread dies.

First off, Vancouver needs to figure out that games last 60 minutes, not 20. I think all Chicago has to do to win the series is not completely blow the first period, and then win the second two because the canuks are dead.

The Ducks are ser challengers. That was a sick (if not long) game Sunday, and at the end, as I think it always is in long overtimes, the team that wanted it the most won. And the ducks won.

Meanwhile, Friday was TD night at the TD Banknorth Garden where TD = Total Domination.

I am not quiet sure what happened last night, but I think that the bruins decided not to play for the first 50 minutes.

A couple thoughts...

1. It\'s nice to see Carolina go up 2-1 on Boston.  When a team that beats the Devils (except the rangers) goes on to continue to win, I like it (escpecially when they\'re playing boston).

2. I hope that the caps don\'t lost any confidence after last night\'s game.  I have nothing against Crosby, but I have an issue with the NHL, particularly when they get behind a certain player/team and the refs give certain calls.

3. The refs blew the no goal call in the ducks/wings game the other night.

Predictions:

Semis:
- Carolina in 6
- Washington in 7
- Anaheim in 6
- Vancouver in 6

Finals
- Washington in 6
- Anaheim in 6

Stanley Cup
- Washington in 6

Since not making the playoffs since the 2001-2002 season, the Chicago Blackhawks have certainly been the surprise of the 2008-2009 season.  Although they can skate with anyone, their physical play has confounded both Calgary and Vancouver.  I was hoping for a Chicago/Boston final, but the Bruins need to step it up big time.  At this point, Carolina, Anaheim and Chicago have definitely been the dark horses of the playoffs.  P.S.  Yoda, don\'t count us out.

P-Bruins win, can end it in Worcester

I hate that team.

-- David Cunniff, SHARKS ASSISTANT COACH ON THE BRUINS

PROVIDENCE —  One of the beautiful things about playoff hockey is that there’s no political correctness anywhere. Take hatred, for instance. Not only is it not discouraged, it’s recommended, and there’s plenty of it to go around in this Calder Cup series between the Sharks and the Providence Bruins.

The Bruins won last night’s game here, 4-3, and now lead the series, 3-2. Worcester is one loss away from elimination, with the next game tomorrow night at 7:05 at the DCU Center.

“It’s going to go seven games,” Sharks coach Roy Sommer said, and who’s to doubt him? Each of the first five games has gone down to the final minute, and each has kept every fan in his or her seat until the final buzzer.

The hatred last night was spread all around the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. In the first period, Sharks assistant coaches David Cunniff and Bryan Marchment, and Bruins assistant Bruce Cassidy, were hollering at each other.

Throughout the game, Providence forward Brad Marchand was instigating and taunting. And in the third period, Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask went after Sharks winger Frazer McLaren and belted him a couple of times with his blocker.

“I hate that team,” Cunniff said after it was over.

Marchand, Martin St. Pierre, Jeremy Reich and Levi Nelson had the Providence goals. Patrick Traverse, Jamie McGinn and Riley Armstrong scored for the Sharks.

Worcester had its chances to win this one. The Sharks even scored first, which — until last night — had resulted in victory every time. This time, though, Worcester sagged in the second period and let Providence build a 3-1 lead.

The Sharks came back to make it 3-2 on McGinn’s goal at 10:26 of the third period, but then they committed the mortal hockey sin of giving it right back. Nelson made it 4-2 at 10:42.

“That was it,” Sommer said. “You can’t give it up that fast. And that goal was my fault, too. Every time we give up a goal, or score one, I put out Desi’s line (Andrew Desjardins, Frazer McLaren and Dan DaSilva) and this time I didn’t. I figured we had some momentum going and we’d try to keep it going, but that other line didn’t get it done.”

Tom Cavanagh, Riley Armstrong and Logan Couture were on for the Nelson goal.

A minute after that, McLaren went to the net as Worcester swarmed around Rask and wound up pushing the goalie into the net. Rask got up and started swinging, and he and McLaren wound up battling on the ice. When it ended, referee Francois St. Laurent gave McLaren a double minor for roughing and Rask just two minutes.

Which McLaren couldn’t figure out at all.

“He hit me twice with his blocker,” McLaren said, “and that’s an automatic five (minutes), I think. But that ref had it in for me all night. I’ve had two misconducts the whole playoffs, and he’s called both of them.”

One misconduct was at the end of the first period last night, the other in Hartford on April 18.

Actually, hitting an opposing player with a blocker is not an automatic five for a goaltender. According to Rule 51.3, it’s a match penalty.

Even after Nelson’s goal and the penalties on McLaren, the Sharks didn’t wilt. Sommer pulled goalie Thomas Greiss with about 2-1/2 minutes left, and Armstrong made it 4-3 almost immediately. But the Bruins did a good job protecting their lead the rest of the way.

Through five games, it has been such splendid hockey that a best-of-25 seems like a great idea. The only problem with that is that none of the players would still be alive by the time it was over.

Hatred can take you only so far.

No one is getting past Boston.

However, in terms of ratings I think that Boston/Chicago would rate better than Boston/Detriot, though both would be very good...not supper bowl level good, but definetly better than high school musical.

P.S.  Yoda, don\'t count us out.

Damn right!! :)   I think they may go all the way.

You gotta get out of the West first...

No one is getting past Boston.

However, in terms of ratings I think that Boston/Chicago would rate better than Boston/Detriot, though both would be very good...not supper bowl level good, but definetly better than high school musical.

Boston has to get past Carolina first... This shouldn\'t have gotten to a game 7, but it did and that should make you think...  Boston lost 3 of 4 to washington and split the series 2-2 against Pitt in the regular season...  When you get to the cup finals, we\'ll talk about no one getting past boston...

Hawks are young and hungry. So much talent on this team. Although I would rather see the Hawks beat the Wings for supreme glory and bragging rights, the Ducks would give us 4 home games--good for Chicago. Either way, waiting impatiently. GO HAWKS!

Oh, and I LOVE Ovechkin. Crosby can lick my balls. Great player, but a douche comparatively. Ovechkin is so fucking good and has way more charisma/star-power. Such pansy-ass comments from Crosby concerning Ovy all the time, he looks like his bitch imo. I like entertainers in professional sports, I consider their value included in ticket costs. That is, of course, if they back it up; Ovechkin clearly does. Go CAPS!

ARE YOU SERIOUS?

ovechkin is a douche.  he\'s slimy, he taunts and charges (see gonchar, see hit when he missed and nailed into his own guy during the third period)

glad he lost.

he\'s a good player, but he\'s a RAGING douchebag.

ovechkin certainly backed it up tonight though. ;)

LETS GO BRUINS!!!!!!

I don\'t want anyone coming out of the East that isn\'t original 6.

Such a huge let down last night. If only AO put that breakaway in the back of the net the game could have been fun.

RE: AO.
I like his offensive ability. But my gripe on him is he is a cherry picker. He is just like mario in that regard. He hangs back by the opposing teams blue line waiting for a pass. At the moment he is really a 1 dimensional player. He is def exciting. And you really can only contain him not stop him. He does RUN guys tho and the league better step in and have a chat with him. He F-ing runs guys from across the ice, someone is really going to get hurt if the let him continue to get away with that BS at least he doesn\'t always leave his feet like commodor on the red wings.

RE: Crosby
I\'m a hater. I can\'t stand sid. I think he is a whiny punk. BUT having said that. He was a stud in this series. He basically carried that team in the early games. He is an all around player.

I am just hopeful the Bruins take out Carolina and then Pitts. I really cannot stomach another Pitts v. whoever final.

Detriot vs. Chicago is a fun series to watch so far, but I don\'t think Chicago will win. They might not even make it to game 6.

After one game, and it was only one game, the penquins seem to be beating carolina.

If Carolina wins, detriot will steam-roll them. Their (D) detriot will not suck balls as much as boston all of a sudden did, so Carolinas best weapon - their aggressive forcheck - will be nutraulize and they will be dominated by a superior club.

If it is Detriot vs Pittsburg again, I don\'t know who I think would have the better cause; going for back 2 back, or beating the team that beat you last year.

It should be noted that all of my playoff perdictions have been 100% wrong.

All of my predictions have been wrong as well

Of all the teams left I would liek to see chicago win it all but I don\'t see that happening. they almost stole a game last night and that would have been huge but it is soo hard to play 100% mistake free hockey. Detroit is just too damn good at making you pay for mistakes.

I hate the Penguins. I cannot stand that team at all. I am just hoping that the canes knock them off. I really don\'t want a rematch in the cup finals. Pitt doesn\'t have close to the team they had last year so I think Detroit walks all over them.

Well, that has more to do with how the Eastern teams got there:

Pitt vs. Philly - Great series, no complaints.
Carolina vs. NJ - Still not sure how NJ lost, but i wasn\'t paying close attention.

Pitt vs Was - Washington all year has been a one-trick pony (offense), Pitt showed that balanced > unbalanced and won.

Carolina vs. Bos - Carolina won because they were able to apply enough forechecking presure to make the bruins consistantly make mistakes in their break-out attempts. This was due to Boston not having 3 of their top 6 defencemen playing

Therefore Pitt vs Carolina - I say bit because I am not convinced of Carolina.

They still will have to go through Detroit.

I think Detroit comes out on top again.

The Pens haven\'t really been tested in this series. and when the Canes did get a forecheck going they gave the pends a lot of trouble. Detroit forechecks consistently, and they have the best transistion game i have ever seen.

I think detroit is going to expose the pens. they are just as talented if not more then the pens, they have great D and a hot goal tender. the thing that the pens will have trouble doing against the wings is double shifting malkin and crosby on the 4th line. Detroit has the depth and speed to roll 4 lines and it will make life tough for those 2.

all things equal the wings have a better team then they did last year. I think last years pitts team was better than this years. so I would say wings in 6 if they beat Chicago (which they will)

Strangers first round pick in this years draft is 18 year old Chris Kreider...he\'s a 6\'2" 201lb. C/LW from Andover Academy in Mass.

I hate Pierre McGuire but this is what he said about him..."He has dynamite speed. A lot of scouts say he might be the best prospect out of New England since Brian Leetch and that\'s pretty big praise." - Pierre McGuire

And from SI.com..."Kreider is the big, two-way center that every team covets. He\'s blessed with great acceleration, elite playmaking skills and a willingness to engage in the battle down low. He could be a more competitive version of Jason Spezza." - Allan Muir

I wish it was hockey season.  Lots of interesting moves today.  I think the price tag for Hossa was a bargain.  Rumor has it that the Kings have offered Havlat $64 million over 8 years.

Lou is a cheap mother fucking bastard....

In one day, we lose 4 key players to free agency:

1. Brian Gionta - key player for years (Canadians)
2. John Madden - I really thought this guy wanted to be a Devil for life (Blackhawks)
3. Mike Rupp (Penguins)
4. Clemmenson - This guy really stepped up for us when Marty went down.  Marty\'s not going to be around forever and we really need a quality back-up. (Panthers)

I\'m sure that we\'ll sign the over the hill traitor to another one-year contract.  I\'m really disapointed in our front office.  You can\'t build a new arena and not keep your stars...

So fucking pissed...
